In this paper, we first use the distribution of the number of records to demonstrate that the right tail probabilities of counts of rare events are generally better approximated by the right tail probabilities of Poisson distribution than {those} of normal distribution. We then show the moderate deviations in Poisson approximation generally require an adjustment and, with suitable adjustment, we establish better error estimates of the moderate deviations in Poisson approximation than those in \cite{CFS}. Our estimates contain no unspecified constants and are easy to apply. We illustrate the use of the theorems in six applications: Poisson-binomial distribution, matching problem, occupancy problem, birthday problem, random graphs and 2-runs. The notion of quantized characters was introduced in our previous paper as a natural quantization of characters in the context of asymptotic representation theory forquantum groups. As in the case of ordinary groups, the representation associated with any extreme quantized character generates a von Neumann factor. From the viewpoint of operator algebras (and measurable dynamical systems), it is natural to ask what is the Murray–von Neumann–Connes type of the resulting factor. In this paper, we give a complete solution to this question when the inductive system is of quantum unitary groups $U_{q}(N)$.

We study a Markovian agent-based model (MABM) in this paper. Each agent is endowed with a local state that changes over time as the agent interacts with its neighbours. The neighbourhood structure is given by a graph. In a recent paper [Simon et al. 2011], the authors used the automorphisms of the underlying graph to generate a lumpable partition of the joint state space ensuring Markovianness of the lumped process for binary dynamics. However, many large random graphs tend to become asymmetric rendering the automorphism-based lumping approach ineffective as a tool of model reduction. In order to mitigate this problem, we propose a lumping method based on a notion of local symmetry, which compares only local neighbourhoods of vertices. Since local symmetry only ensures approximate lumpability, we quantify the approximation error by means of Kullback-Leibler divergence rate between the original Markov chain and a lifted Markov chain. In this paper we first investigate the boundedness of $\mathfrak{T}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},m}$ on products of weighted Lebesgue spaces. Then, the weighted endpoint $L\log L$ type estimate and strong estimate for the commutators of $\mathfrak{T}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},m}$ will be demonstrated.

In this paper a non-convex vector optimization problem among infinite-dimensional spaces is presented. In particular, a generalized Lagrange multiplier rule is formulated as a necessary and sufficient optimality condition for weakly minimal solutions of a constrained vector optimization problem, without requiring that the ordering cone that defines the inequality constraints has non-empty interior. This paper extends the result of Donato (J. Funct. Analysis261 (2011), 2083–2093) to the general setting of vector optimization by introducing a constraint qualification assumption that involves the Fréchet differentiability of the maps and the tangent cone to the image set. Moreover, the constraint qualification is a necessary and sufficient condition for the Lagrange multiplier rule to hold.

In this paper we consider the set of all extremal Volterra quadratic stochastic operators defined on a unit simplex $S^{4}$ and show that such operators can be reinterpreted in terms of zero-sum games. We show that an extremal Volterra operator is non-ergodic and an appropriate zero-sum game is a rock-paper-scissors game if either the Volterra operator is a uniform operator or for a non-uniform Volterra operator $V$ there exists a subset $I\subset \{1,2,3,4,5\}$ with $|I|\leq 2$ such that $\sum _{i\in I}(V^{n}\mathbf{x})_{i}\rightarrow 0,$ and the restriction of $V$ on an invariant face ${\rm\Gamma}_{I}=\{\mathbf{x}\in S^{m-1}:x_{i}=0,i\in I\}$ is a uniform Volterra operator.

This paper contains results on the geometric and ergodic properties of a class of strange attractors introduced by Wang and Young [Towards a theory of rank one attractors. Ann. of Math. (2) 167 (2008), 349–480]. These attractors can live in phase spaces of any dimension, and have been shown to arise naturally in differential equations that model several commonly occurring phenomena. Dynamically, such systems are chaotic; they have controlled non-uniform hyperbolicity with exactly one unstable direction, hence the name rank-one. In this paper we prove theorems on their Lyapunov exponents, Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen (SRB) measures, basins of attraction, and statistics of time series, including central limit theorems, exponential correlation decay and large deviations. We also present results on their global geometric and combinatorial structures, symbolic coding and periodic points. In short, we build a dynamical profile for this class of dynamical systems, proving that these systems exhibit many of the characteristics normally associated with ‘strange attractors’.

In this paper, we introduce and study theα-Farey map and its associated jump transformation, theα-Lüroth map, for an arbitrary countable partitionαof the unit interval with atoms which accumulate only at the origin. These maps represent linearized generalizations of the Farey map and the Gauss map from elementary number theory. First, a thorough analysis of some of their topological and ergodic theoretical properties is given, including establishing exactness for both types of these maps. The first main result then is to establish weak and strong renewal laws for what we have calledα-sum-level sets for theα-Lüroth map. Similar results have previously been obtained for the Farey map and the Gauss map by using infinite ergodic theory. In this respect, a side product of the paper is to allow for greater transparency of some of the core ideas of infinite ergodic theory. The second remaining result is to obtain a complete description of the Lyapunov spectra of theα-Farey map and theα-Lüroth map in terms of the thermodynamical formalism. We show how to derive these spectra and then give various examples which demonstrate the diversity of their behaviours in dependence on the chosen partitionα.

This paper is concerned with statistical inference for both continuous and discrete phase-type distributions. We consider maximum likelihood estimation, where traditionally the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm has been employed. Certain numerical aspects of this method are revised and we provide an alternative method for dealing with the E-step. We also compare the EM algorithm to a direct Newton–Raphson optimization of the likelihood function. As one of the main contributions of the paper, we provide formulae for calculating the Fisher information matrix both for the EM algorithm and Newton–Raphson approach. The inverse of the Fisher information matrix provides the variances and covariances of the estimated parameters.

The derivation of Ruelle’s derivative formula of the SRB measure depends largely on the calculation of the derivative of the unstable Jacobian. Although Ruelle’s derivative formula is correct, the proofs in the original paper and its corrigendum are not complete. In this paper, we re-visit the differentiation process of the unstable Jacobian and provide a complete derivation of its derivative formula. Our approach is to extend the volume form provided by the SRB measure on local unstable manifolds to a system of Hölder continuous local Riemannian metrics on the manifold so that under this system of local metrics, the unstable Jacobian becomes differentiable with respect to the base point and its derivative with respect to the map can be obtained by the chain rule.

This paper is concerned with the analysis of Markov decision processes in which a natural form of termination ensures that the expected future costs are bounded, at least under some policies. Whereas most previous analyses have restricted attention to the case where the set of states is finite, this paper analyses the case where the set of states is not necessarily finite or even countable. It is shown that all the existence, uniqueness, and convergence results of the finite-state case hold when the set of states is a general Borel space, provided we make the additional assumption that the optimal value function is bounded below. We give a sufficient condition for the optimal value function to be bounded below which holds, in particular, if the set of states is countable.

In this paper we find conditions which guarantee that a given flow $\Phi$ on a compact metric space $X$ admits a Lyapunov one-form $\omega$ lying in a prescribed \v{C}ech cohomology class $\xi\in \check H^1(X;\R)$. These conditions are formulated in terms of the restriction of $\xi$ to the chain recurrent set of $\Phi$. The result of the paper may be viewed as a generalization of a well-known theorem of C. Consider a renewal process. The renewal events partition the process into i.i.d. renewal cycles. Assume that on each cycle, a rare event called 'success’ can occur. Such successes lend themselves naturally to approximation by Poisson point processes. If each success occurs after a random delay, however, Poisson convergence may be relatively slow, because each success corresponds to a time interval, not a point. In 1996, Altschul and Gish proposed a finite-size correction to a particular approximation by a Poisson point process. Their correction is now used routinely (about once a second) when computers compare biological sequences, although it lacks a mathematical foundation. This paper generalizes their correction. For a single renewal process or several renewal processes operating in parallel, this paper gives an asymptotic expansion that contains in successive terms a Poisson point approximation, a generalization of the Altschul-Gish correction, and a correction term beyond that.

The purpose of this work is to establish a priori $C^{2,\alpha}$ estimates for mesh function solutions of nonlinear difference equations of positive type in fully nonlinear form on a uniform mesh, where the fully nonlinear finite difference operator $\F$ is concave in the second-order variables. The estimate is an analogue of the corresponding estimate for solutions of concave fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. We use the results for the special case that the operator does not depend explicitly upon the independent variables (the so-called frozen case) established in part I to approach the general case of explicit dependence upon the independent variables. We make our approach for the diagonal case via a discretization of the approach of Safonov for fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations using the discrete linear theory of Kuo and Trudinger and an especially agreeable mesh function interpolant provided by Kunkle. We generalize to non-diagonal operators using an idea which, to the author’s knowledge, is novel. In this paper we establish the desired Hölder estimate in the large, that is, on the entire mesh $n$-plane. Our goal in this paper is to describe the structure of the Julia set of complex exponential functions that possess an attracting cycle. When the cycle is a fixed point, it is known that the Julia set is a ‘Cantor bouquet’, a union of uncountably many distinct curves or ‘hairs’. When the period of the cycle is greater than one, infinitely many of the hairs in the bouquet become pinched or attached together. In this paper, we develop an algorithm to determine which of these hairs are attached. Of crucial importance in this construction is the kneading invariant, a sequence that is derived from the topology of the basins of attraction of the attracting cycle.

In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions to ensure the validity of confidence intervals, based on the central limit theorem, in simulations of highly reliable Markovian systems. We resort to simulations because of the frequently huge state space in practical systems. So far the literature has focused on the property of bounded relative error. In this paper we focus on ‘bounded normal approximation’ which asserts that the approximation of the normal law, suggested by the central limit theorem, does not deteriorate as the reliability of the system increases. Here we see that the set of systems with bounded normal approximation is (strictly) included in the set of systems with bounded relative error.

In this paper we prove a local exponential synchronization for Markovian random iterations of homeomorphisms of the circle $S^{1}$ , providing a new result on stochastic circle dynamics even for $C^1$ -diffeomorphisms. This result is obtained by combining an invariance principle for stationary random iterations of homeomorphisms of the circle with a Krylov–Bogolyubov-type result for homogeneous Markov chains.

In this paper we continue to explore the applications of the connections between singular Riemannian geometry and billiard systems that were first used in [6] to prove estimates on the number of collisions in non-degenerate semi-dispersing billiards.In this paper we show that the topological entropy of a compact non-degenerate semi-dispersing billiard on any manifold of non-positive sectional curvature is finite. Also, we prove exponential estimates on the number of periodic points (for the first return map to the boundary of a simple-connected billiard table) and the number of periodic trajectories (for the billiard flow). In \S5 we prove some estimates for the topological entropy of Lorentz gas.

In this paper we analyze a single server two-queue model with Bernoulli schedules. This discipline is very flexible and contains the exhaustive and 1-limited disciplines as special cases. We formulate the queueing system as a Riemann boundary value problem with shift. The boundary value problem is solved by exploring a Fredholm integral equation around the unit circle. Some numerical examples are presented at the end of the paper.

We consider products of an independent and identically distributed sequence in a set $\{f_1,\ldots ,f_m\}$ of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle. We can naturally associate a Lyapunov exponent $\lambda $ . Under few assumptions, it is known that $\lambda \leq 0$ and that the equality holds if and only if $f_1,\ldots ,f_m$ are simultaneously conjugated to rotations. In this paper, we state a quantitative version of this fact in the case where $f_1,\ldots ,f_m$ are $C^k$ perturbations of rotations with rotation numbers $\rho (f_1),\ldots ,\rho (f_m)$ satisfying a simultaneous diophantine condition in the sense of Moser [On commuting circle mappings and simultaneous diophantine approximations. Math. Z.205(1) (1990), 105–121]: we give a precise estimate of $\lambda $ (Taylor expansion) and we prove that there exist a diffeomorphism g and rotations $r_i$ such that $\mbox {dist}(gf_ig^{-1},r_i)\ll |\lambda |^{{1}/{2}}$ for $i=1,\ldots , m$ . We also state analogous results for random products of $2\times 2$ matrices, without any diophantine condition.

Comparison results for Markov processes with respect to function-class-induced (integral) stochastic orders have a long history. The most general results so far for this problem have been obtained based on the theory of evolution systems on Banach spaces. In this paper we transfer the martingale comparison method, known for the comparison of semimartingales to Markovian semimartingales, to general Markov processes. The basic step of this martingale approach is the derivation of the supermartingale property of the linking process, giving a link between the processes to be compared. This property is achieved using the characterization of Markov processes by the associated martingale problem in an essential way. As a result, the martingale comparison method gives a comparison result for Markov processes under a general alternative but related set of regularity conditions compared to the evolution system approach.

This paper investigates a financial market where stock returns depend on an unobservable Gaussian mean reverting drift process. Information on the drift is obtained from returns and randomly arriving discrete-time expert opinions. Drift estimates are based on Kalman filter techniques. We study the asymptotic behavior of the filter for high-frequency experts with variances that grow linearly with the arrival intensity. The derived limit theorems state that the information provided by discrete-time expert opinions is asymptotically the same as that from observing a certain diffusion process. These diffusion approximations are extremely helpful for deriving simplified approximate solutions of utility maximization problems.

In this paper, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the persistence probability in the positive real line of a random polynomial arising from evolutionary game theory. It corresponds to the probability that a multi-player two-strategy random evolutionary game has no internal equilibria. There are lots of results to study dynamical complexity on irregular sets and level sets of ergodic average from the perspective of density in base space, Hausdorff dimension, Lebesgue positive measure, positive or full topological entropy (and topological pressure) etc.. However, it is unknown from the viewpoint of chaos. There are lots of results on the relationship of positive topological entropy and various chaos but it is known that positive topological entropy does not imply a strong version of chaos called DC1 so that it is non-trivial to study DC1 on irregular sets and level sets. In this paper we will show that for dynamical system with specification property, there exist uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets in irregular sets and level sets. On the other hand, we also prove that several recurrent levels of points with different recurrent frequency all have uncountable DC1-scrambled subsets. The main technique established to prove above results is that there exists uncountable DC1-scrambled subset in saturated sets., 23 pages

The De Vylder and Goovaerts conjecture is an open problem in risk theory, stating that the finite-time ruin probability in a standard risk model is greater than or equal to the corresponding ruin probability evaluated in an associated model with equalized claim amounts. Equalized means here that the jump sizes of the associated model are equal to the average jump in the initial model between 0 and a terminal time T.In this paper, we consider the diffusion approximations of both the standard risk model and its associated risk model. We prove that the associated model, when conveniently renormalized, converges in distribution to a Gaussian process satisfying a simple SDE. We then compute the probability that this diffusion hits the level 0 before time T and compare it with the same probability for the diffusion approximation for the standard risk model. We conclude that the De Vylder and Goovaerts conjecture holds for the diffusion limits.

We prove a conditional theorem on the positivity of the Lyapunov exponent for a Schrödinger cocycle over a skew-shift base with a cosine potential and the golden ratio as frequency. For coupling below 1, which is the threshold for Herman’s subharmonicity trick, we formulate three conditions on the Lyapunov exponent in a finite but large volume and on the associated large-deviation estimates at that scale. Our main results demonstrate that these finite-size conditions imply the positivity of the infinite-volume Lyapunov exponent. This paper shows that it is possible to make the techniques developed for the study of Schrödinger operators with deterministic potentials, based on large-deviation estimates and the avalanche principle, effective.

In this paper, we study the fractional Dirichlet problem with the homogeneous exterior data posed on a bounded domain with Lipschitz continuous boundary. Under an extra assumption on the domain, slightly weaker than the exterior ball condition, we are able to prove existence and uniqueness of solutions which are Hölder continuous on the boundary. In proving this result, we use appropriate barrier functions obtained by an approximation procedure based on a suitable family of zero-th order problems. This procedure, in turn, allows us to obtain an approximation scheme for the Dirichlet problem through an equicontinuous family of solutions of the approximating zero-th order problems on ${\bar \Omega}$. Both results are extended to an ample class of fully non-linear operators.

In this paper, we study an interesting curve, so-called the Manhattan curve, associated with a pair of boundary-preserving Fuchsian representations of a (non-compact) surface, especially representations corresponding to Riemann surfaces with cusps. Using Thermodynamic Formalism (for countable Markov shifts), we prove the analyticity of the Manhattan curve. Moreover, we derive several dynamical and geometric rigidity results, which generalize results of Marc Burger and Richard Sharp for convex-cocompact Fuchsian representations., 34 pages and 2 figures. For a class of competitive maps there is an invariant one-codimensional manifold (the carrying simplex) attracting all non-trivial orbits. In this paper it is shown that its convexity implies that it is a$C^{1}$submanifold-with-corners, neatly embedded in the non-negative orthant. The proof uses the characterization of neat embedding in terms of inequalities between Lyapunov exponents for ergodic invariant measures supported on the boundary of the carrying simplex.

It was recently shown in Gaidashev and Yampolsky [Golden mean Siegel disk universality and renormalization. Preprint, 2016, arXiv:1604.00717] that appropriately defined renormalizations of a sufficiently dissipative golden-mean semi-Siegel Hénon map converge super-exponentially fast to a one-dimensional renormalization fixed point. In this paper, we show that the asymptotic two-dimensional form of these renormalizations is universal and is parameterized by the average Jacobian. This is similar to the limit behavior of period-doubling renormalizations in the Hénon family considered in de Carvalho et al [Renormalization in the Hénon family, I: universality but non-rigidity. J. Stat. Phys.121 (5/6) (2006), 611–669]. As an application of our result, we prove that the boundary of the golden-mean Siegel disk of a dissipative Hénon map is non-smoothly rigid.

In this paper, we consider the spectrum of discrete quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators on $\ell ^{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ with the potentials $v\in C^{k}(\mathbb{T})$. For sufficiently large $k$, we show that the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum at irrational frequencies is the limit of the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum of its periodic approximants. This gives a partial answer to the problem proposed in Jitomirskaya and Mavi [Continuity of the measure of the spectrum for quasiperiodic schrödinger operator with rough potentials. Comm. Math. Phys.325 (2014), 585–601]. Our results are based on a generalization of the rigidity theorem in Avila and Krikorian [Reducibility or non-uniform hyperbolicity for quasiperiodic Schrödinger cocycles. Ann. of Math. (2)164 (2006), 911–940]; more precisely, we prove that in the $C^{k}$ case, for almost every frequency $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in \mathbb{R}\backslash \mathbb{Q}$ and for almost every $E$, the corresponding quasi-periodic Schrödinger cocycles are either reducible or non-uniformly hyperbolic.

[GIKN] and [BBD1] propose two very different ways for building non hyperbolic measures, [GIKN] building such a measure as the limit of periodic measures and [BBD1] as the $\omega$-limit set of a single orbit, with a uniformly vanishing Lyapunov exponent. The technique in [GIKN] was essentially used in a generic setting, as the periodic orbits were built by small perturbations. It is not known if the measures obtained by the technique in [BBD1] are accumulated by periodic measures. In this paper we use a shadowing lemma from [G]: $\bullet$for getting the periodic orbits in [GIKN] without perturbing the dynamics, $\bullet$for recovering the compact set in [BBD1] with a uniformly vanishing Lyapunov exponent by considering the limit of periodic orbits. As a consequence, we prove that there exists an open and dense subset $\mathcal{U}$ of the set of robustly transitive non-hyperbolic diffeomorphisms far from homoclinic tangencies, such that for any $f\in\mathcal{U}$, there exists a non-hyperbolic ergodic measure with full support and approximated by hyperbolic periodic measures. We also prove that there exists an open and dense subset $\mathcal{V}$ of the set of diffeomorphisms exhibiting a robust cycle, such that for any $f\in\mathcal{V}$, there exists a non-hyperbolic ergodic measure approximated by hyperbolic periodic measures., Comment: 37 pages

Drawdown (resp. drawup) of a stochastic process, also referred as the reflected process at its supremum (resp. infimum), has wide applications in many areas including financial risk management, actuarial mathematics and statistics. In this paper, for general time-homogeneous Markov processes, we study the joint law of the first passage time of the drawdown (resp. drawup) process, its overshoot, and the maximum of the underlying process at this first passage time. By using short-time pathwise analysis, under some mild regularity conditions, the joint law of the three drawdown quantities is shown to be the unique solution to an integral equation which is expressed in terms of fundamental two-sided exit quantities of the underlying process. Explicit forms for this joint law are found when the Markov process has only one-sided jumps or is a L\'{e}vy process (possibly with two-sided jumps). The contribution of the theory of scan statistics to the study of many real-life applications has been rapidly expanding during the last decades. The multiple scan statistic, defined on a sequence of n Bernoulli trials, enumerates the number of occurrences of k consecutive trials which contain at least r successes among them (r≤k≤n). In this paper we establish some asymptotic results for the distribution of the multiple scan statistic, as n,k,r→∞ and illustrate their accuracy through a simulation study. Our approach is based on an appropriate combination of compound Poisson approximation and random walk theory.

Acta Arith. 168 (2015), 269–287], the author conjectured that for Lebesgue almost every $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}\in (1,2)$, the condition $\sum _{n=1}^{\infty }2^{n}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9}(n)=\infty$ implies that $W_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9})$ is of full Lebesgue measure within $[0,1/(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}-1)]$. In this paper we make a significant step towards proving this conjecture. We prove that given a sequence of positive real numbers $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{n})_{n=1}^{\infty }$ satisfying $\lim _{n\rightarrow \infty }\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{n}=\infty$, for Lebesgue almost every $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}\in (1.497,\ldots ,2)$, the set $W_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{n}\cdot 2^{-n})$ is of full Lebesgue measure within $[0,1/(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}-1)]$. We also study the case where $\sum _{n=1}^{\infty }2^{n}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9}(n) in which the set $W_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9})$ has Lebesgue measure zero. Applying the mass transference principle developed by Beresnevich and Velani in [A mass transference principle and the Duffin–Schaeffer conjecture for Hausdorff measures. Ann. of Math. (2) 164(3) (2006), 971–992], we obtain some results on the Hausdorff dimension and the Hausdorff measure of $W_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F9})$.

In this paper we develop a notion of Gibbs measure for the geodesic flow tangent to a foliated bundle over a compact and negatively curved basis. We also develop a notion of $F$-harmonic measure and prove that there exists a natural bijective correspondence between the two. For projective foliated bundles with $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^1$-fibers without transverse invariant measure, we show the uniqueness of these measures for any H\"older potential on the basis. In that case we also prove that $F$-harmonic measures are realized as weighted limits of large balls tangent to the leaves and that their conditional measures on the fibers are limits of weighted averages on the orbits of the holonomy group., Comment: 49 pages, final version, to appear in Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems

The purpose of this paper is to consider the$N$-center problem with collinear centers, to identify its syzygy sequences that can be realized by minimizers of the Lagrangian action functional and to count the number of such syzygy sequences. In particular, we show that the number of such realizable syzygy sequences of length$\ell$greater than or equal to two for the 3-center problem is at least$F_{\ell +2}-2$, where$\{F_{n}\}$is the Fibonacci sequence. Moreover, with fixed length$\ell$, the density of such realizable syzygy sequences of length$\ell$for the$N$-center problem approaches one as$N$increases to infinity. Using reflection symmetry, the minimizers that we found can be extended to periodic solutions.

This paper proposes improvements to the modified Fletcher–Reeves conjugate gradient method (FR-CGM) for computing $Z$-eigenpairs of symmetric tensors. The FR-CGM does not need to compute the exact gradient and Jacobian. The global convergence of this method is established. We also test other conjugate gradient methods such as the modified Polak–Ribière–Polyak conjugate gradient method (PRP-CGM) and shifted power method (SS-HOPM). Numerical experiments of FR-CGM, PRP-CGM and SS-HOPM show the efficiency of the proposed method for finding $Z$-eigenpairs of symmetric tensors.

De Bruijn's identity relates two important concepts in information theory: Fisher information and differential entropy. Unlike the common practice in the literature, in this paper we consider general additive non-Gaussian noise channels where more realistically, the input signal and additive noise are not independently distributed. It is shown that, for general dependent signal and noise, the first derivative of the differential entropy is directly related to the conditional mean estimate of the input. Then, by using Gaussian and Farlie–Gumbel–Morgenstern copulas, special versions of the result are given in the respective case of additive normally distributed noise. The previous result on independent Gaussian noise channels is included as a special case. Illustrative examples are also provided.

In this paper we connect Archimedean survival processes (ASPs) with the theory of Markov copulas. ASPs were introduced by Hoyle and Mengütürk (2013) to model the realized variance of two assets. We present some new properties of ASPs related to their dependency structure. We study weak and strong Markovian consistency properties of ASPs. An ASP is weak Markovian consistent, but generally not strong Markovian consistent. Our results contain necessary and sufficient conditions for an ASP to be strong Markovian consistent. These properties are closely related to the concept of Markov copulas, which is very useful in modelling different dependence phenomena. At the end we present possible applications.

In this paper we obtain exponential large-deviation bounds in the Shannon–McMillan–Breiman convergence formula for entropy in the case of weak Gibbs measures and topologically mixing subshifts of finite type. We also prove almost sure estimates for the error term in the convergence to entropy given by the Shannon–McMillan–Breiman formula for both uniformly and non-uniformly expanding shifts. Finally, we establish a topological characterization of large-deviation bounds for Gibbs measures and deduce some of their topological and geometrical aspects: the local entropy is zero and the topological pressure of positive measure sets is total. Some applications include large-deviation estimates for Lyapunov exponents, pointwise dimension and slow return times.

The main result of the paper is classification of free multidimensional Borel flows up to Lebesgue orbit equivalence, by which we mean an orbit equivalence that preserves the Lebesgue measure on each orbit. Two non-smooth $\mathbb{R}^{d}$-flows are shown to be Lebesgue orbit equivalent if and only if they admit the same number of invariant ergodic probability measures.

This paper extends and applies algebraic invariants and constructions for mixing finite group extensions of shifts of finite type. For a finite abelian group G, Parry showed how to define a G-extension S_A from a square matrix A over Z_+G, and classified the extensions up to topological conjugacy by the strong shift equivalence class of A over Z_+G. Parry asked in this case if the det(I-tA) (which captures the "periodic data" of the extension) would classify up to finitely many topological conjugacy classes the extensions by G of a fixed mixing shift of finite type. When the algebraic K-theory group NK_1(ZG) is nontrivial (e.g., for G=Z/4), we show the dynamical zeta function for any such extension is consistent with infinitely many topological conjugacy classes. Independent of NK_1(ZG): for every nontrivial abelian G we show there exists a shift of finite type with an infinite family of mixing nonconjugate G extensions with the same dynamical zeta function. We define computable complete invariants for the periodic data of the extension for G not necessarily abelian, and extend all the above results to the nonabelian case. In this paper we study a quasi-linear elliptic problem coupled with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We propose a new set of assumptions ensuring the existence of infinitely many solutions.

In a recent paper, Porter [9] devised two generalized Volterra operators which convert integral equations with the Hankel function kernel into Cauchy singular equations. The transformations were exploited in [9], and in a subsequent paper (Porter and Chu [10]), in relation to certain wave diffraction problems.

This paper concerns a problem which arose from a paper of Sullivan. Let Γ be a discrete group of isometries of hyperbolic space Hd+1. We study the question of when the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle UT (Hd+1/Γ) of Hd+1/Γ is ergodic with respect to certain natural measures. As a consequence, we study the question of when Γ is of divergence type. Ergodicity when the non-wandering set of UT (Hd+1/Γ) is compact is already known from the theory of symbolic dynamics, due to Bowen, or from Sullivan's work. For such a Γ, we consider a subgroup Γ1 of Γ with Γ/Γ1 ≅ℤυ and prove the geodesic flow on UT (Hd+1/Γ1) is ergodic (with respect to one of these natural measures) if and only if υ ≤ 2.

Over a finite interval, a Gaussian stationary process can be approximated by a finite trigonometric sum, and the error introduced by the approximation can be exactly bounded, as far as the distribution of the upper tail of the maximum is concerned. A simple case is exhibited, where a narrow band process is well approximated by means of a two-term trigonometric representation. GAUSSIAN PROCESS; DISTRIBUTION OF MAXIMUM; NARROW-BAND PROCESSES; FOURIER SERIES Introduction The motivation for the work described in this paper arose from dissatisfaction with the state of the theory of the distribution of the maximum of a Gaussian stationary process with smooth sample functions over a finite interval. It is well known that an explicit solution to this problem can be obtained only in very few cases. In a recent paper, Shepp and Slepian (1976) state that to the best of their knowledge it is known for four non-trivial covariance functions only. The literature abounds with asymptotic theorems for the distribution of the maximum above high levels. For a survey of results and bibliography, see Blake and Lindsey (1973) and Vanmarcke (1975). Very little is known, however, about the precision of the asymptotic approximations when they are used for finite levels. These asymptotic approximations turn out in fact to be numerically unsatisfactory at these finite levels when compared with simulation results. In this paper, it is shown that, over a finite interval (T, + T), a Gaussian stationary process can be approximated by a finite trigonometric sum, and that the error introduced by the approximation can be exactly bounded, as far as the distribution of the upper tail of the maximum is concerned. This paper is concerned with the problem of obtaining explicit expressions of solutions of a system of coupled Lyapunov matrix differential equations of the typewhere Fi, Ai(t), Bi(t), Ci(t) and Dij(t) are m×m complex matrices (members of ℂm×m), for 1≦i, j≦N, and t in the interval [a,b]. When the coefficient matrices of (1.1) are timeinvariant, Dij are scalar multiples of the identity matrix of the type Dij=dijI, where dij are real positive numbers, for 1≦i, j≦N Ci, is the transposed matrix of Bi and Fi = 0, for 1≦i≦N, the Cauchy problem (1.1) arises in control theory of continuous-time jump linear quadratic systems [9–11]. Algorithms for solving the above particular case can be found in [12]]. These methods yield approximations to the solution. Without knowing the explicit expression of the solutions and in order to avoid the error accumulation it is interesting to know an explicit expression for the exact solution. In Section 2, we obtain an explicit expression of the solution of the Cauchy problem (1.1) and of two-point boundary value problems related to the system arising in (1.1). Stability conditions for the solutions of the system of (1.1) are given. Because of developed techniques this paper can be regarded as a continuation of the sequence [3, 4, 5, 6].

Summary The present paper generalizes the results of the author's paper [2] on “Discontinuous Markov processes” to processes that are incompletely specified. These results are then used to develop a step-by-step method of solution for processes involving several kinds of “jumps”, where at the first step one solves for the transition probabilities involving jumps of the first kind, but not of the second, third, etc., at the second step for transition probabilities involving jumps of the first and second, but not the third, fourth, etc. kinds, and so on. Some examples are given.

This paper applies the theory of semi-Markov processes to the construction of a stochastic model for interpreting data obtained from clinical trials. The model characterizes the patient as being in one of a finite number of states at any given time with an arbitrary probability distribution to describe the length of stay in a state. Transitions between states are assumed to be chosen according to a stationary finite Markov chain.Other attempts have been made to develop stochastic models of clinical trials. However, these have all been essentially Markovian with constant transition probabilities which implies that the distribution of time spent during a visit to a state is exponential (or geometric for discrete Markov chains). Markov models need also to assume that the transitions in the state of a patient depend only on absolute time whereas the semi-Markov model assumes that transitions depend on time relative to a patient. Thus the models are applicable to degenerative diseases (cancer, acute leukemia), while Markov models with time dependent transition probabilities are applicable to colds and epidemic diseases. In this paper the Laplace transforms are obtained for (i) probability of being in a state at timet, (ii) probability distribution to reach absorption state and (iii) the probability distribution of the first passage times to go from initial states to transient or absorbing states, transient to transient, and transient to absorbing. The model is applied to a clinical study of acute leukemia in which patients have been treated with methotrexate and 6-mercaptopurine. The agreement between the data and the model is very good.
