This paper arose from interest in assessing the quality of random number generators. The problem of testing randomness of a string of binary bits produced by such a generator gained importance with the wide use of public key cryptography and the need for secure encryption algorithms. All such algorithms are based on a generator of (pseudo) random numbers; the testing of such generators for randomness became crucial for the communications industry where digital signatures and key management are vital for information processing. The concept of approximate entropy has been introduced in a series of papers by S. Pincus and co-authors. The corresponding statistic is designed to measure the degree of randomness of observed sequences. It is based on incremental contrasts of empirical entropies based on the frequencies of different patterns in the sequence. Sequences with large approximate entropy must have substantial fluctuation or irregularity. Alternatively, small values of this characteristic imply strong regularity, or lack of randomness, in a sequence. Pincus and Kalman (1997) evaluated approximate entropies for binary and decimal expansions of e, π, √2 and √3 with the surprising conclusion that the expansion of √3 demonstrated much less irregularity than that of π. Tractable small sample distributions are hardly available, and testing randomness is based, as a rule, on fairly long strings. Therefore, to have rigorous statistical tests of randomness based on this approximate entropy statistic, one needs the limiting distribution of this characteristic under the randomness assumption. Until now this distribution remained unknown and was thought to be difficult to obtain. To derive the limiting distribution of approximate entropy we modify its definition. It is shown that the approximate entropy as well as its modified version converges in distribution to a χ2-random variable. The P-values of approximate entropy test statistics for binary expansions of e, π and √3 are plotted. Although some of these values for √3 digits are small, they do not provide enough statistical significance against the randomness hypothesis.

In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions to ensure the validity of confidence intervals, based on the central limit theorem, in simulations of highly reliable Markovian systems. We resort to simulations because of the frequently huge state space in practical systems. So far the literature has focused on the property of bounded relative error. In this paper we focus on ‘bounded normal approximation’ which asserts that the approximation of the normal law, suggested by the central limit theorem, does not deteriorate as the reliability of the system increases. Here we see that the set of systems with bounded normal approximation is (strictly) included in the set of systems with bounded relative error.

On the basis of the Karlin and McGregor result, which states that the transition probability functions of a birth and death process can be expressed via the introduction of an orthogonal polynomial system and a spectral measure, we investigate in this paper how the Laplace transforms and the distributions of different transient characteristics related to excursions of a birth and death process can be expressed by means of the basic orthogonal polynomial system and the spectral measure. This allows us in particular to give a probabilistic interpretation of the series introduced by Stieltjes to study the convergence of the fundamental continued fraction associated with the system. Throughout the paper, we pay special attention to the case when the birth and death process is ergodic. Under the assumption that the spectrum of the spectral measure is discrete, we show how the distributions of different random variables associated with excursions depend on the fundamental continued fraction, the orthogonal polynomial system and the spectral measure.

A gap mapping is a discontinuous interval mapping with two strictly increasing branches that have a gap between their ranges. They are one-dimensional dynamical systems, which arise in the study of certain higher dimensional flows, for example the Lorenz flow and the Cherry flow. In this paper, we prove hyperbolicity of renormalization acting on $C^3$ dissipative gap mappings, and show that the topological conjugacy classes of infinitely renormalizable gap mappings are $C^1$ manifolds.

In this paper we prove a local exponential synchronization for Markovian random iterations of homeomorphisms of the circle $S^{1}$ , providing a new result on stochastic circle dynamics even for $C^1$ -diffeomorphisms. This result is obtained by combining an invariance principle for stationary random iterations of homeomorphisms of the circle with a Krylov–Bogolyubov-type result for homogeneous Markov chains.

It is proved that every holomorphically convex complex space endowed with an action of a compact Lie group K can be realized as an open K-stable subspace of a holomorphically convex space endowed with a holomorphic action of the complexified group K . Similar results are obtained for holomorphic if-bundles over such spaces. Let G be a real Lie group which acts by holomorphic transformations on a (reduced) complex space X. Suppose that the Lie algebra of the complexification G c of G (see [Ho, p. 204]) is the complexification of the Lie algebra of G. This holds for example in the case where G is simply connected. Then, by integrating the holomorphic vector fields given by the G-action, the complexification G c acts locally and holomorphically on X (see [K]). Adapting the terminology of Palais (see [P]), we say that a complex space X* which contains X as an open subset is a globalization of the complex G-space X whenever the local G-action on X extends to a global holomorphic action on X* and G c X = X*. In this paper we analyze a single server two-queue model with Bernoulli schedules. This discipline is very flexible and contains the exhaustive and 1-limited disciplines as special cases. We formulate the queueing system as a Riemann boundary value problem with shift. The boundary value problem is solved by exploring a Fredholm integral equation around the unit circle. Some numerical examples are presented at the end of the paper.

A number of recent papers have exhibited classes of queueing networks, with batches of customers served and routed through the network, which have generalised product-form equilibrium distributions. In this paper we look at these from a new viewpoint. In particular we show that, under standard assumptions, for a network to possess an equilibrium distribution that factorises into a product form over the nodes of the network for all possible transition rates, it is necessary and sufficient that it be equivalent to a suitably-defined single-movement network. We consider also the form of the state space for such networks.

The Brocard points P and P' of the triangle ABC, illustrated in Figure 1, are such that ∠PAB = ∠PBC = ∠PCA = ω and ∠P'BA = ∠P'CB = ∠P'AC = ω. Problem 78.A in the March 1994 edition of the Mathematical Gazette required a proof that the maximum length of PP' is R/2, where R is the circumradius of triangle ABC. The solution given by various solvers in the November 1994 edition of the Gazette is essentially the same as appeared in a paper by H. E. Piggott in the Gazette in 1924. In the present paper various properties of the triangle and its Brocard points are established in terms of the lengths of the sides of the triangle. Some of the results may be new, but the methods used encompass ‘Mathematics Ancient and Modern’ in the guises of homogeneous areal coordinates and computer algebra!

In a famous paper, Dwass (1967) proposed a method to deal with rank order statistics, which constitutes a unifying framework to derive various distributional results. In the present paper an alternative method is presented, which allows us to extend Dwass's results in several ways, namely arbitrary endpoints, horizontal steps and arbitrary probabilities for the three step types. Regarding these extensions the pertaining rank order statistics are extended as well to simple random walk statistics. This method has proved appropriate to generalize all results given by Dwass. Moreover, these discrete time results can be taken as a starting point to derive the corresponding results for randomized random walks by means of a limiting process.

We consider the exact distribution of the number of peaks in a random permutation of the integers 1, 2, ···, n. This arises from a test of whether n successive observations from a continuous distribution are i.i.d. The Eulerian numbers, which figure in the p.g.f., are then shown to provide a link between the simpler problem of ascents (which has been thoroughly analysed) and both our problem of peaks and similar problems on the circle. This link then permits easy deduction of certain general properties, such as linearity in n of the cumulants, in the more complex settings. Since the focus of the paper is on exact distributional results, a uniform bound on the deviation from the limiting normal is included. A secondary purpose of the paper is synthesis, beginning with the more familiar setting of peaks and troughs.

In this paper we obtain some improved $L^p$ -Hardy and $L^p$ -Rellich inequalities on bounded domains of Riemannian manifolds. For Cartan–Hadamard manifolds we prove the inequalities with sharp constants and with weights being hyperbolic functions of the Riemannian distance.

A subgroup H of a group G is said to be contranormal in G if the normal closure of H in G is equal to G. In this paper, we consider groups whose nonmodular subgroups (of infinite rank) are contranormal.

In the first part of the paper, we use states on $C^{*}$-algebras in order to establish some equivalent statements to equality in the triangle inequality, as well as to the parallelogram identity for elements of a pre-Hilbert $C^{*}$-module. We also characterize the equality case in the triangle inequality for adjointable operators on a Hilbert $C^{*}$-module. Then we give certain necessary and sufficient conditions to the Pythagoras identity for two vectors in a pre-Hilbert $C^{*}$-module under the assumption that their inner product has a negative real part. We introduce the concept of Pythagoras orthogonality and discuss its properties. We describe this notion for Hilbert space operators in terms of the parallelogram law and some limit conditions. We present several examples in order to illustrate the relationship between the Birkhoff–James, Roberts, and Pythagoras orthogonalities, and the usual orthogonality in the framework of Hilbert $C^{*}$-modules.

We study the behavior of representation varieties of quivers with relations under the operation of node splitting. We show how splitting a node gives a correspondence between certain closed subvarieties of representation varieties for different algebras, which preserves properties like normality or having rational singularities. Furthermore, we describe how the defining equations of such closed subvarieties change under the correspondence. By working in the "relative setting" (splitting one node at a time), we demonstrate that there are many non-hereditary algebras whose irreducible components of representation varieties are all normal with rational singularities. We also obtain explicit generators of the prime defining ideals of these irreducible components. This class contains all radical square zero algebras, but also many others, as illustrated by examples throughout the paper. We also show the above is true when replacing irreducible components by orbit closures, for a more restrictive class of algebras. This paper focuses on recollements and silting theory in triangulated categories. It consists of two main parts. In the first part a criterion for a recollement of triangulated subcategories to lift to a torsion torsion-free triple (TTF triple) of ambient triangulated categories with coproducts is proved. As a consequence, lifting of TTF triples is possible for recollements of stable categories of repetitive algebras or self-injective finite length algebras and recollements of bounded derived categories of separated Noetherian schemes. When, in addition, the outer subcategories in the recollement are derived categories of small linear categories the conditions from the criterion are sufficient to lift the recollement to a recollement of ambient triangulated categories up to equivalence. In the second part we use these results to study the problem of constructing silting sets in the central category of a recollement generating the t-structure glued from the silting t-structures in the outer categories. In the case of a recollement of bounded derived categories of Artin algebras we provide an explicit construction for gluing classical silting objects.

Gireesh and Mahadeva Naika [‘On 3-regular partitions in 3-colors’, Indian J. Pure Appl. Math.50 (2019), 137–148] proved an infinite family of congruences modulo powers of 3 for the function $p_{\{3,3\}}(n)$ , the number of 3-regular partitions in three colours. In this paper, using elementary generating function manipulations and classical techniques, we significantly extend the list of proven arithmetic properties satisfied by $p_{\{3,3\}}(n).$

In this paper, we establish a Kantorovich duality for unbalanced optimal total variation transport problems. As consequences, we recover a version of duality formula for partial optimal transports established by Caffarelli and McCann; and we also get another proof of Kantorovich–Rubinstein theorem for generalized Wasserstein distance$\widetilde {W}_1^{a,b}$proved before by Piccoli and Rossi. Then we apply our duality formula to study generalized Wasserstein barycenters. We show the existence of these barycenters for measures with compact supports. Finally, we prove the consistency of our barycenters.

This paper considers risk-sensitive average optimization for denumerable continuous-time Markov decision processes (CTMDPs), in which the transition and cost rates are allowed to be unbounded, and the policies can be randomized history dependent. We first derive the multiplicative dynamic programming principle and some new facts for risk-sensitive finite-horizon CTMDPs. Then, we establish the existence and uniqueness of a solution to the risk-sensitive average optimality equation (RS-AOE) through the results for risk-sensitive finite-horizon CTMDPs developed here, and also prove the existence of an optimal stationary policy via the RS-AOE. Furthermore, for the case of finite actions available at each state, we construct a sequence of models of finite-state CTMDPs with optimal stationary policies which can be obtained by a policy iteration algorithm in a finite number of iterations, and prove that an average optimal policy for the case of infinitely countable states can be approximated by those of the finite-state models. Finally, we illustrate the conditions and the iteration algorithm with an example.

In this paper, we study a large system of $N$ servers each with capacity to process at most $C$ simultaneous jobs and an incoming job is routed to a server if it has the lowest occupancy amongst $d$ (out of N) randomly selected servers. A job that is routed to a server with no vacancy is assumed to be blocked and lost. Such randomized policies are referred to JSQ(d) (Join the Shortest Queue out of $d$) policies. Under the assumption that jobs arrive according to a Poisson process with rate $N\lambda^{(N)}$ where $\lambda^{(N)}=\sigma-\frac{\beta}{\sqrt{N}}$, $\sigma\in\mb{R}_+$ and $\beta\in\mb{R}$, we establish functional central limit theorems (FCLTs) for the fluctuation process in both the transient and stationary regimes when service time distributions are exponential. In particular, we show that the limit is an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process whose mean and variance depend on the mean-field of the considered model. Using this, we obtain approximations to the blocking probabilities for large $N$, where we can precisely estimate the accuracy of first-order approximations., Comment: 29 pages

In this paper, we define a family of functionals generalizing the Yang–Mills–Higgs functionals on a closed Riemannian manifold. Then we prove the short-time existence of the corresponding gradient flow by a gauge-fixing technique. The lack of a maximum principle for the higher order operator brings us a lot of inconvenience during the estimates for the Higgs field. We observe that the$L^2$-bound of the Higgs field is enough for energy estimates in four dimensions and we show that, provided the order of derivatives appearing in the higher order Yang–Mills–Higgs functionals is strictly greater than one, solutions to the gradient flow do not hit any finite-time singularities. As for the Yang–Mills–Higgsk-functional with Higgs self-interaction, we show that, provided$\dim (M), for every smooth initial data the associated gradient flow admits long-time existence. The proof depends on local$L^2$-derivative estimates, energy estimates and blow-up analysis.

A Birkhoff billiard is a system describing the inertial motion of a point mass inside a strictly convex planar domain, with elastic reflections at the boundary. The study of the associated dynamics is profoundly intertwined with the geometric properties of the domain: while it is evident how the shape determines the dynamics, a more subtle and difficult question is the extent to which the knowledge of the dynamics allows one to reconstruct the shape of the domain. This translates into many intriguing inverse problems and unanswered rigidity questions, which have been the focus of very active research in recent decades. In this paper we describe some of these questions, along with their connection to other problems in analysis and geometry, with particular emphasis on recent results obtained by the authors and their collaborators.

We consider products of an independent and identically distributed sequence in a set $\{f_1,\ldots ,f_m\}$ of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle. We can naturally associate a Lyapunov exponent $\lambda $ . Under few assumptions, it is known that $\lambda \leq 0$ and that the equality holds if and only if $f_1,\ldots ,f_m$ are simultaneously conjugated to rotations. In this paper, we state a quantitative version of this fact in the case where $f_1,\ldots ,f_m$ are $C^k$ perturbations of rotations with rotation numbers $\rho (f_1),\ldots ,\rho (f_m)$ satisfying a simultaneous diophantine condition in the sense of Moser [On commuting circle mappings and simultaneous diophantine approximations. Math. Z.205(1) (1990), 105–121]: we give a precise estimate of $\lambda $ (Taylor expansion) and we prove that there exist a diffeomorphism g and rotations $r_i$ such that $\mbox {dist}(gf_ig^{-1},r_i)\ll |\lambda |^{{1}/{2}}$ for $i=1,\ldots , m$ . We also state analogous results for random products of $2\times 2$ matrices, without any diophantine condition.

This paper explores the existence and distribution of primitive elements in finite field extensions with prescribed traces in several intermediate field extensions. Our main result provides an inequality-like condition to ensure the existence of such elements. In this paper, we study the center Z of the finite W-algebra $${\mathcal{T}}({\mathfrak{g}},e)$$ associated with a semi-simple Lie algebra $$\mathfrak{g}$$ over an algebraically closed field $$\mathbb{k}$$ of characteristic p≫0, and an arbitrarily given nilpotent element $$e \in{\mathfrak{g}} $$ We obtain an analogue of Veldkamp’s theorem on the center. For the maximal spectrum Specm(Z), we show that its Azumaya locus coincides with its smooth locus of smooth points. The former locus reflects irreducible representations of maximal dimension for $${\mathcal{T}}({\mathfrak{g}},e)$$ .

Let G be a locally compact group and let ${\mathcal {SUB}(G)}$ be the hyperspace of closed subgroups of G endowed with the Chabauty topology. The main purpose of this paper is to characterise the connectedness of the Chabauty space ${\mathcal {SUB}(G)}$ . More precisely, we show that if G is a connected pronilpotent group, then ${\mathcal {SUB}(G)}$ is connected if and only if G contains a closed subgroup topologically isomorphic to ${{\mathbb R}}$ .

The aim of this paper is to study complete (noncompact) m-quasi-Einstein manifolds with λ=0 satisfying a fourth-order vanishing condition on the Weyl tensor and zero radial Weyl curvature. In this case, we are able to prove that an m-quasi-Einstein manifold (m>1) with λ=0 on a simply connected n-dimensional manifold(Mn, g), (n ≥ 4), of nonnegative Ricci curvature and zero radial Weyl curvature must be a warped product with (n–1)–dimensional Einstein fiber, provided that M has fourth-order divergence-free Weyl tensor (i.e. div4W =0).

In this paper, we study the structure of the rational cohomology groups of the IA-automorphism group$\mathrm {IA}_3$of the free group of rank three by using combinatorial group theory and representation theory. In particular, we detect a nontrivial irreducible component in the second cohomology group of$\mathrm {IA}_3$, which is not contained in the image of the cup product map of the first cohomology groups. We also show that the triple cup product of the first cohomology groups is trivial. As a corollary, we obtain that the fourth term of the lower central series of$\mathrm {IA}_3$has finite index in that of the Andreadakis–Johnson filtration of$\mathrm {IA}_3$.

We present a sufficient condition for the $kG$-Scott module with vertex $P$ to remain indecomposable under the Brauer construction for any subgroup $Q$ of $P$ as $k[Q\,C_G(Q)]$-module, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $2$, and $P$ is a semidihedral $2$-subgroup of a finite group $G$. This generalizes results for the cases where $P$ is abelian or dihedral. The Brauer indecomposability is defined \linebreak by R.~Kessar, N.~Kunugi and N.~Mitsuhashi. The motivation of \linebreak this paper is a fact that the Brauer indecomposability of a $p$-permutation bimodule ($p$ is a prime) is one of the key steps in order to obtain a splendid stable equivalence of Morita type by making use of the gluing method due to Brou\'e, Rickard, Linckelmann and Rouquier, that then can possibly be lifted to a splendid derived (splendid Morita) equivalence., Comment: 10 pages

In this paper we investigate the Margulis–Ruelle inequality for general Riemannian manifolds (possibly non-compact and with a boundary) and show that it always holds under an integrable condition.

This paper is concerned with the distibutions and the moments of the area and the local time of a random walk, called the Bernoulli meander. The limit behavior of the distributions and the moments is determined in the case where the number of steps in the random walk tends to infinity. The results of this paper yield explicit formulas for the distributions and the moments of the area and the local time for the Brownian meander.

This paper considers the asymptotic distribution of the maximum number of infectives in an epidemic model by showing that, as the initial number of susceptibles converges to infinity, the process of infectives converges almost surely to a birth and death process. The model studied here is more general than usual (see e.g. Bailey (1975), Bharucha-Reid (1960), Keilson (1979)) in that it incorporates immigration and the limiting birth and death process is non-linear. The main novelty of the present paper is the martingale approach used to prove the above-mentioned convergence. In this paper we propose a new category Qcl of complex numbers which contains π, e and the set of algebraic numbers. In fact this category contains most of the numbers studied so far in number theory. An element of the category is here called a classical number. The category of the classical numbers forms an algebraically closed field and consists of countably many numbers. The definition depends on algebraic differential equations related with algebraic groups. Throughout the paper unless otherwise stated, we deal with functions of one variable and a differential equation is an ordinary differential equation. We are inspired of the Leçons de Stockholm of Painlevé [P].

The hazard rate ordering is an ordering for random variables which compares lifetimes with respect to their hazard rate functions. It is stronger than the usual stochastic order for random variables, yet is weaker than the likelihood ratio ordering. The hazard rate ordering is particularly useful in reliability theory and survival analysis, owing to the importance of the hazard rate function in these areas. In this paper earlier work on the hazard rate ordering is reviewed, and extensive new results related to coherent systems are derived. Initially we fix the form of a coherent structure and investigate the effect on the hazard rate function of the system when we switch the lifetimes of its components from the vector (T 1, · ··, Tn ) to the vector (T′ 1, · ··, T′n ), where the hazard rate functions of the two vectors are assumed to be comparable in some sense. Although the hazard rate ordering is closed under the formation of series systems, we see that this is not the case for parallel systems even when the system is a two-component parallel system with exponentially distributed lifetimes. A positive result shows that for two-component parallel systems with proportional hazards (λ 1 r(t), λ 2 r(t))), the more diverse (λ 1, λ2 ) is in the sense of majorization the stronger is the system in the hazard rate ordering. Unfortunately even this result does not extend to parallel systems with more than two components, demonstrating again the delicate nature of the hazard rate ordering. The principal result of the paper concerns the hazard rate ordering for the lifetime of a k-out-of-n system. It is shown that if τ k|n is the lifetime of a k-out-of-n system, then τ k|n is greater than τ k+ 1|n in the hazard rate ordering for any k. This has an interesting interpretation in the language of order statistics. For independent (not necessarily identically distributed) lifetimes T 1, · ··, Tn , we let Tk:n represent the kth order statistic (in increasing order). Then it is shown that Tk + 1:n is greater than Tk:n in the hazard rate ordering for all k = 1, ···, n − 1. The result does not, however, extend to the stronger likelihood ratio order.

A number of papers have recently appeared in the literature in which customers, in moving from node to node in the network arrive as either a positive customer or as a batch of negative customers. A positive customer joining its queue increases the number of customers at the queue by 1 and each negative customer decreases the queue length by 1, if possible. It has been shown that the equilibrium distribution for these networks assumes a geometric product form, that certain partial balance equations prevail and that the parameters of the geometric distributions are, as in Jackson networks, the service facility throughputs of customers. In this paper the previous work is generalised by allowing state dependence into both the service and routing intensities and by allowing the possibility, although not the necessity, for negative customers to build up at the nodes.

Two recent papers by Petruccelli and Woolford (1984) and Chan et al. (1985) showed that the key element governing ergodicity of a threshold AR(1) model is the joint behavior of the two linear AR(1) pieces falling in the two boundary threshold regimes. They used essentially the necessary and sufficient conditions for ergodicity of a general Markov chain of Tweedie (1974), (1975) in a rather clever manner. However, it is difficult to extend the results to the more general threshold ARMA models. Besides, irreducibility is also required to apply Tweedie's results. In this paper, instead of pursuing the ideas in Tweedie's results, we shall develop a criterion similar in spirit to the technique used by Beneš (1967) in the context of continuous-time Markov chains. Consequently, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a strictly stationary solution of a general non-linear ARMA model to be introduced in Section 2 of this paper. This condition is then applied to the threshold ARMA(1, q) model to yield a sufficient condition for strict stationarity which is identical to the condition given by Petruccelli and Woolford (1984) for the threshold AR(1). Hence, the conjecture that the moving average component does not affect stationarity is partially verified. Furthermore, under an additional irreducibility assumption, ergodicity of a non-linear ARMA model is established. The paper then concludes with a necessary condition for stationarity of the threshold ARMA(1, q) model.

In this article we continue the investigations on invariant metrics on a certain class of weakly pseudoconvex domains which we began in [H 1]. While in that paper the differential metrics of Caratheodory and Kobayashi were estimated precisely, the present paper contains a sharp estimate of the singularity of the Bergman kernel and metric on domains belonging to that class.

The lower central series of the absolute Galois group of a field is obtained by iterating the process of forming the maximal central extension of the maximal nilpotent extension of a given class, starting with the maximal abelian extension. The purpose of this paper is to give a cohomological description of this central series in case of an algebraic number field. This description is based on a result of Tate which states that the Schur multiplier of the absolute Galois group of a number field is trivial. We are in a profinite situation throughout which requires some functorial background especially for treating the dual of the Schur multiplier of a profinite group. In a future paper we plan to apply our results to construct a nilpotent reciprocity map.

In this paper, we study some spectral properties of the discrete Schrödinger operator = Δ + q defined on a locally finite connected graph with an automorphism group whose orbit space is a finite graph.The discrete Laplacian and its generalization have been explored from many different viewpoints (for instance, see [2] [4]). Our paper discusses the discrete analogue of the results on the bottom of the spectrum established by T. Kobayashi, K. Ono and T. Sunada [3] in the Riemannian-manifold-setting.

The paper gives a simple proof of Graev’s theorem (asserting that the free product of Hausdorff topological groups is Hausdorff) for a particular case which includes the countable case of $k_\omega $ -groups and the countable case of Lindelöf P-groups. For this it is shown that in these particular cases the topology of the free product of Hausdorff topological groups coincides with the $X_0$ -topology in the Mal’cev sense, where X is the disjoint union of the topological groups identifying their units.

In this paper, we study the principal spectral theory of age-structured models with random diffusion. First, we provide an equivalent characteristic for the principal eigenvalue, the strong maximum principle and a positive strict super-solution. Then, we use the result to investigate the effects of diffusion rate on the principal eigenvalue. Finally, we study how the principal eigenvalue affects the global dynamics of the KPP model and verify that the principal eigenvalue being zero is a critical value.

There are well known identities that involve the Ext bifunctor, coproducts, and products in Ab4 and Ab4* abelian categories with enough projectives and enough injectives. Namely, for every such category $\mathcal{A}$, the isomorphisms $\operatorname{Ext}^n (\bigoplus_{i\in I}A_{i},X) \cong \prod_{i\in I} \operatorname{Ext}^n(A_{i},X)$ and $\operatorname{Ext}^n (X,\prod_{i\in I}A_{i}) \cong \prod_{i\in I}\operatorname{Ext}^n (X,A_{i})$ always exist. The goal of this paper is to show similar isomorphisms for the Yoneda Ext in Ab4 and Ab4* abelian categories with not necessarily enough projectives nor injectives. Let k be a finite field of characteristic p, and G a compact p-adic analytic group. Write kG for the completed group ring of G over k. In this paper, we describe the structure of the ring kG/P, where P is a minimal prime ideal of kG. We give an explicit isomorphism between kG/P and a matrix ring with coefficients in the ring ${(k'G')_\alpha }$ , where $k'/k$ is a finite field extension, $G'$ is a large subquotient of G with no finite normal subgroups, and (–)α is a “twisting” operation that preserves many desirable properties of the ring structure. We demonstrate the usefulness of this isomorphism by studying the correspondence induced between certain ideals of kG and those of ${(k'G')_\alpha }$ , and showing that this preserves many useful “group-theoretic” properties of ideals, in particular almost-faithfulness and control by a closed normal subgroup.

Many authors have studied the dynamics of hyperbolic transcendental entire functions; these are those for which the postsingular set is a compact subset of the Fatou set. Equivalenty, they are characterized as being expanding. Mihaljevi\'c-Brandt studied a more general class of maps for which finitely many of their postsingular points can be in their Julia set, and showed that these maps are also expanding with respect to a certain orbifold metric. In this paper we generalise these ideas further, and consider a class of maps for which the postsingular set is not even bounded. We are able to prove that these maps are also expanding with respect to a suitable orbifold metric, and use this expansion to draw conclusions on the topology and dynamics of the maps. In particular, we generalize existing results for hyperbolic functions, giving criteria for the boundedness of Fatou components and local connectivity of Julia sets. As part of this study, we develop some novel results on hyperbolic orbifold metrics. Comparison results for Markov processes with respect to function-class-induced (integral) stochastic orders have a long history. The most general results so far for this problem have been obtained based on the theory of evolution systems on Banach spaces. In this paper we transfer the martingale comparison method, known for the comparison of semimartingales to Markovian semimartingales, to general Markov processes. The basic step of this martingale approach is the derivation of the supermartingale property of the linking process, giving a link between the processes to be compared. This property is achieved using the characterization of Markov processes by the associated martingale problem in an essential way. As a result, the martingale comparison method gives a comparison result for Markov processes under a general alternative but related set of regularity conditions compared to the evolution system approach.

This paper investigates a financial market where stock returns depend on an unobservable Gaussian mean reverting drift process. Information on the drift is obtained from returns and randomly arriving discrete-time expert opinions. Drift estimates are based on Kalman filter techniques. We study the asymptotic behavior of the filter for high-frequency experts with variances that grow linearly with the arrival intensity. The derived limit theorems state that the information provided by discrete-time expert opinions is asymptotically the same as that from observing a certain diffusion process. These diffusion approximations are extremely helpful for deriving simplified approximate solutions of utility maximization problems.

Let S be the sum-of-digits function in base 2, which returns the number of 1s in the base-2 expansion of a nonnegative integer. For a nonnegative integer t, define the asymptotic density $${c_t} = \mathop {\lim }\limits_{N \to \infty } {1 \over N}|\{ 0 \le n < N:s(n + t) \ge s(n)\} |.$$ T. W. Cusick conjectured that ct > 1/2. We have the elementary bound 0 < ct < 1; however, no bound of the form 0 < α ≤ ct or ct ≤ β < 1, valid for all t, is known. In this paper, we prove that ct > 1/2 – ε as soon as t contains sufficiently many blocks of 1s in its binary expansion. In the proof, we provide estimates for the moments of an associated probability distribution; this extends the study initiated by Emme and Prikhod’ko (2017) and pursued by Emme and Hubert (2018).

Some favourite topics of both mathematics teachers and mathematics students are the golden ratio, Fibonacci numbers, groups, and Pythagorean triples. The material of this paper involves the first three, and there are some analogies with the fourth.

This paper is concerned with the existence of solutions for a class of elliptic equations on the unit ball with zero Dirichlet boundary condition. The nonlinearity is supercritical in the sense of Trudinger–Moser. Using a suitable approximating scheme we obtain the existence of at least one positive solution.

By means of a counter-example, we show that the Reilly theorem for the upper bound of the first non-trivial eigenvalue of the Laplace operator of a compact submanifold of Euclidean space (Reilly, 1977, Comment. Mat. Helvetici, 52, 525–533) does not work for a (codimension ⩾2) compact spacelike submanifold of Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime. In the search of an alternative result, it should be noted that the original technique in (Reilly, 1977, Comment. Mat. Helvetici, 52, 525–533) is not applicable for a compact spacelike submanifold of Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime. In this paper, a new technique, based on an integral formula on a compact spacelike section of the light cone in Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime is developed. The technique is genuine in our setting, that is, it cannot be extended to another semi-Euclidean spaces of higher index. As a consequence, a family of upper bounds for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator of a compact spacelike submanifold of Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime is obtained. The equality for one of these inequalities is geometrically characterized. Indeed, the eigenvalue achieves one of these upper bounds if and only if the compact spacelike submanifold lies minimally in a hypersphere of certain spacelike hyperplane. On the way, the Reilly original result is reproved if a compact submanifold of a Euclidean space is naturally seen as a compact spacelike submanifold of Lorentz–Minkowski spacetime through a spacelike hyperplane.
