Current quantum devices impose strict connectivity constraints on quantum circuits, making circuit transformation necessary before running logical circuits on real quantum devices. Many quantum circuit transformation (QCT) algorithms have been proposed in the past several years. This paper proposes a novel method for constructing benchmark circuits and uses these benchmark circuits to evaluate state-of-the-art QCT algorithms, including TKET from Cambridge Quantum Computing, Qiskit from IBM, and three academic algorithms SABRE, SAHS, and MCTS. These benchmarks have known near-optimal transformation costs and thus are called QUEKNO (for quantum examples with known near-optimality). Compared with QUEKO benchmarks designed by Tan and Cong (2021), which all have zero optimal transformation costs, QUEKNO benchmarks are more general and can provide a more faithful evaluation for QCT algorithms (like TKET) which use subgraph isomorphism to find the initial mapping. Ongoing advances in superconductors continue to revolutionize technology thanks to the increasingly versatile and robust availability of lossless supercurrent. In particular high supercurrent density can lead to more efficient and compact power transmission lines, high-field magnets, as well as high-performance nanoscale radiation detectors and superconducting spintronics. Here, we report the discovery of an unprecedentedly high superconducting critical current density (17 MA/cm2 at 0 T and 7 MA/cm2 at 8 T) in 1T'-WS2, exceeding those of all reported two-dimensional superconductors to date. 1T'-WS2 features a strongly anisotropic (both in- and out-of-plane) superconducting state that violates the Pauli paramagnetic limit signaling the presence of unconventional superconductivity. Spectroscopic imaging of the vortices further substantiates the anisotropic nature of the superconducting state. More intriguingly, the normal state of 1T'-WS2 carries topological properties. The band structure obtained via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations points to a Z2 topological invariant. The concomitance of topology and superconductivity in 1T'-WS2 establishes it as a topological superconductor candidate, which is promising for the development of quantum computing technology.

Oxide heterostructures have shown rich physics phenomena, particularly in the conjunction of exotic insulator-metal transition (IMT) at the interface between polar insulator LaAlO3 and non-polar insulator SrTiO3 (LaAlO3/SrTiO3). Polarization catastrophe model has suggested an electronic reconstruction yielding to metallicity at both the interface and surface. Another scenario is the occurrence of surface oxygen vacancy at LaAlO3 (surface-Ov), which has predicted surface-to-interface charge transfer yielding metallic interface but insulating surface. To clarify the origin of IMT, one should probe surface-Ov and the associated electronic structures at both the surface and the buried interface simultaneously. Here, using low-angle resonant soft X-ray scattering (LA-RSXS) supported with first-principles calculations, we reveal the co-existence of the surface-Ov state and the interface conducting state only in conducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (001) films. Interestingly, both the surface-Ov state and the interface conducting state are absent for the insulating film. As a function of Ov density, while the surface-Ov state is responsible for the IMT, the spatial charge distribution is found responsible for a transition from two-dimensional-like to three-dimensional-like conducting accompanied by spectral weight transfer, revealing the importance of electronic correlation. Our results show the importance of surface-Ov in determining interface properties and provides a new strategy in utilizing LA-RSXS to directly probe the surface and buried interface electronic properties in complex oxide heterostructures.

AC-coupled LGAD(AC-LGAD) Strip is a new design of LGAD that allows high-precision detection of particle spatiotemporal information whereas reducing the density of readout electronics. For AC-LGAD Strips, there is limited research on the impact of different strip pitches on the spatiotemporal detection performance at the small amount of injected charge. The Institute of High Energy Physics has designed an AC-LGAD Strip prototype with pitches of 150 $\mu m$, 200 $\mu m$, and 250 $\mu m$. The spatial and timing resolutions of the prototype are studied through the laser Transient Current Technique (TCT) scan with different amounts of injected charge. The results show that both the spatial and timing resolution improves as the strip pitch decreases. Increases in both temporal and spatial resolutions as the amount of charge injected increases are observed. The spatial and timing resolution is better than 60 ps and 40 $\mu m$ at 1 Minimum Ionizing Particle (MIP), and better than 10 ps and 5 $\mu m$ at 40 MIPs. Increasing Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) is the key to improving spatial and temporal resolution, whereas increasing the signal attenuation rate by reducing the gap between adjacent electrodes also helps to improve spatial resolution. The enhancements of spatial and timing resolutions by both SNR and signal attenuation rate decrease with increasing amount of MIP. This study can help design and optimize the AC-LGAD Strip detectors and readout electronics.

We perform high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations using the framework of {\it MACER} to investigate supermassive black hole (SMBH) feeding and feedback in a massive compact galaxy, which has a small effective radius but a large stellar mass, with a simulation duration of 10 Gyr. We compare the results with a reference galaxy with a similar stellar mass but a less concentrated stellar density distribution, as typically found in local elliptical galaxies. We find that about 10% of the time, the compact galaxy develops multi-phase gas within a few kpc, but the accretion flow through the inner boundary below the Bondi radius is always a single phase. The inflow rate in the compact galaxy is several times larger than in the reference galaxy, mainly due to the higher gas density caused by the more compact stellar distribution. Such a higher inflow rate results in stronger SMBH feeding and feedback and a larger fountain-like inflow-outflow structure. Compared to the reference galaxy, the star formation rate in the compact galaxy is roughly two orders of magnitude higher but is still low enough to be considered quiescent. Over the whole evolution period, the black hole mass grows by $\sim$50% in the compact galaxy, much larger than the value of $\sim$ 3% in the reference galaxy., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Interlayer electronic coupling in two-dimensional (2D) materials enables tunable and emergent properties by stacking engineering. However, it also brings significant evolution of electronic structures and attenuation of excitonic effects in 2D semiconductors as exemplified by quickly degrading excitonic photoluminescence and optical nonlinearities in transition metal dichalcogenides when monolayers are stacked into van der Waals structures. Here we report a novel van der Waals crystal, niobium oxide dichloride, featuring a vanishing interlayer electronic coupling and scalable second harmonic generation intensity of up to three orders higher than that of exciton-resonant monolayer WS2. Importantly, the strong second-order nonlinearity enables correlated parametric photon pair generation, via a spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) process, in flakes as thin as ~46 nm. To our knowledge, this is the first SPDC source unambiguously demonstrated in 2D layered materials, and the thinnest SPDC source ever reported. Our work opens an avenue towards developing van der Waals material-based ultracompact on-chip SPDC sources, and high-performance photon modulators in both classical and quantum optical technologies.

We report measurements of the gravitationally lensed secondary image—the first in an infinite series of so-called “photon rings”—around the supermassive black hole M87* via simultaneous modeling and imaging of the 2017 Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations. The inferred ring size remains constant across the seven days of the 2017 EHT observing campaign and is consistent with theoretical expectations, providing clear evidence that such measurements probe spacetime and a striking confirmation of the models underlying the first set of EHT results. The residual diffuse emission evolves on timescales comparable to one week. We are able to detect with high significance a southwestern extension consistent with that expected from the base of a jet that is rapidly rotating in the clockwise direction. This result adds further support to the identification of the jet in M87* with a black hole spin-driven outflow, launched via the Blandford–Znajek process. We present three revised estimates for the mass of M87* based on identifying the modeled thin ring component with the bright ringlike features seen in simulated images, one of which is only weakly sensitive to the astrophysics of the emission region. All three estimates agree with each other and previously reported values. Our strongest mass constraint combines information from both the ring and the diffuse emission region, which together imply a mass-to-distance ratio of 4.20 − 0.06 + 0.12 μ as and a corresponding black hole mass of (7.13 ± 0.39) × 109 M ⊙, where the error on the latter is now dominated by the systematic uncertainty arising from the uncertain distance to M87*.

The non-centrosymmetric topological material has attracted intense attention due to its superior characters as compared to the centrosymmetric one. On one side, the topological phase coming from global geometric properties of the quantum wave function remains unchanged, on the other side, abundant exotic phenomena are predicted to be merely emerged in non-centrosymmetric ones, due to the redistribution of local quantum geometry. Whereas, probing the local quantum geometry in non-centrosymmetric topological material remains challenging. Here, we report a non-centrosymmetric topological phase in ZrTe$_5$, probed by the nonlinear Hall (NLH) effect. The angle-resolved and temperature-dependent NLH measurement reveals the inversion and ab-plane mirror symmetries breaking under 30 K, consistent with our theoretical calculation. Our findings identify a new non-centrosymmetric phase of ZrTe$_5$ and provide a platform to probe and control local quantum geometry via crystal symmetries., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Inspired by a recent study of Iancu, Mueller and Triantafyllopoulos [1] and earlier papers by Golec-Biernat and Wusthoff [2,3], we propose semi-inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering (SIDDIS) to investigate the gluon tomography in the nucleon and nuclei at small-$x$. The relevant diffractive quark and gluon parton distribution functions (DPDF) can be computed in terms of the color dipole S-matrices in the fundamental and adjoint representations, respectively. Novel correlations from the gluon tomography in the dipole S-matrix can be experimentally studied through the DPDFs in these processes at the future electron-ion collider (EIC)., Comment: Added appendices, 10 pages, 5 figures

The eROSITA bubbles are detected via the instrument with the same name. The northern bubble shows noticeable asymmetric features, including distortion to the west and enhancement in the eastern edge, while the southern counterpart is significantly dimmer. Their origins are debated. Here, we performed hydrodynamic simulations showing that asymmetric eROSITA bubbles favor a dynamic, circumgalactic medium wind model, but disfavor other mechanisms such as a non-axisymmetric halo gas or a tilted nuclear outflow. The wind from the east by north direction in Galactic coordinates blows across the northern halo with a velocity of about 200 km s$^{-1}$, and part of it enters the southern halo. This creates a dynamic halo medium and redistributes both density and metallicity within. This naturally explains the asymmetric bubbles in both the morphology and surface brightness. Our results suggest that our Galaxy is accreting low-abundance circumgalactic medium from one side while providing outflow feedback., Comment: Published in Nature Communications, file size 10MB

Winds play a significant role in active galactic nuclei feedback process. Previous simulations studying winds only focus on a small dynamical range. Therefore, it is unknown how far the winds can go and what the properties of the winds will be if they can move to large radii. We perform simulations to study the large scale dynamics of winds driven by line force. We find that the properties of the winds depend on both black hole mass ($M_{BH}$) and accretion disk luminosity. When the accretion disk luminosity is $0.6L_{edd}$ ($L_{edd}$ being Eddington luminosity), independent of $M_{BH}$, the winds have kinetic energy flux exceeding $1\% L_{edd}$ and can escape from the black hole potential. For the case with the accretion disk luminosity equaling 0.3$L_{edd}$, the strength of the winds decreases with the decrease of $M_{BH}$. If $M_{BH}$ decreases from $10^9$ to $10^6$ solar mass ($M_\odot$), the winds kinetic energy flux decreases from $\sim 0.01 L_{edd}$ to $ \sim 10^{-6} L_{edd}$. In case of $M_{BH}\geq 10^7 M_\odot$, winds can escape from black hole potential. In the case of $M_{BH}=10^6 M_\odot$, the winds can not escape. We find that for the ultra-fast winds observed in hard X-ray bands (\citealt{Gofford et al. 2015}), the observed dependence of the mass flux and the kinetic energy flux on accretion disk luminosity can be well produced by line force driven winds model. Misalignment between rotation and magnetic field has been suggested to be one type of physical mechanisms which can easen the effects of magnetic braking during collapse of cloud cores leading to formation of protostellar disks. However, its essential factors are poorly understood. Therefore, we perform a more detailed analysis of the physics involved. We analyze existing simulation data to measure the system torques, mass accretion rates and Toomre Q parameters. We also examine the presence of shocks in the system. While advective torques are generally the strongest, we find that magnetic and gravitational torques can play substantial roles in how angular momentum is transferred during the disk formation process. Magnetic torques can shape the accretion flows, creating two-armed magnetized inflow spirals aligned with the magnetic field. We find evidence of an accretion shock that is aligned according to the spiral structure of the system. Inclusion of ambipolar diffusion as explored in this work has shown a slight influence in the small scale structures but not in the main morphology. We investigate superconformal quantum mechanics (SCQM) on a quantum computer. We study the ground state of the mass deformed SCQM on a quantum computed using the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) using a one boson and one boson - one fermion Hilbert space with and without noise and compare the accuracy of the results. We study the Feynman path integral for SCQM using the Evolution of Hamiltonian (EOH) algorithm on the quantum computer using the Trotter-Suzuki approximation and compare with the exact result. We consider an N boson and N fermion version of SCQM given be the Supersymmetric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland (SCMS) model. We compare the ground state of SCMS theory obtained using the VQE computation with the exact solution. Finally we discuss the implications of the the numerical simulation of SCQM on a quantum computer for the simulation of quantum gravity in light of the Anti-de Sitter/Superconformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence.

Interventional magnetic resonance imaging (i-MRI) for surgical guidance could help visualize the interventional process such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), improving the surgery performance and patient outcome. Different from retrospective reconstruction in conventional dynamic imaging, i-MRI for DBS has to acquire and reconstruct the interventional images sequentially online. Here we proposed a convolutional long short-term memory (Conv-LSTM) based recurrent neural network (RNN), or ConvLR, to reconstruct interventional images with golden-angle radial sampling. By using an initializer and Conv-LSTM blocks, the priors from the pre-operative reference image and intra-operative frames were exploited for reconstructing the current frame. Data consistency for radial sampling was implemented by a soft-projection method. To improve the reconstruction accuracy, an adversarial learning strategy was adopted. A set of interventional images based on the pre-operative and post-operative MR images were simulated for algorithm validation. Results showed with only 10 radial spokes, ConvLR provided the best performance compared with state-of-the-art methods, giving an acceleration up to 40 folds. The proposed algorithm has the potential to achieve real-time i-MRI for DBS and can be used for general purpose MR-guided intervention.

This work studies the joint rain and haze removal problem. In real-life scenarios, rain and haze, two often co-occurring common weather phenomena, can greatly degrade the clarity and quality of the scene images, leading to a performance drop in the visual applications, such as autonomous driving. However, jointly removing the rain and haze in scene images is ill-posed and challenging, where the existence of haze and rain and the change of atmosphere light, can both degrade the scene information. Current methods focus on the contamination removal part, thus ignoring the restoration of the scene information affected by the change of atmospheric light. We propose a novel deep neural network, named Asymmetric Dual-decoder U-Net (ADU-Net), to address the aforementioned challenge. The ADU-Net produces both the contamination residual and the scene residual to efficiently remove the rain and haze while preserving the fidelity of the scene information. Extensive experiments show our work outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods by a considerable margin in both synthetic data and real-world data benchmarks, including RainCityscapes, BID Rain, and SPA-Data. For instance, we improve the state-of-the-art PSNR value by 2.26/4.57 on the RainCityscapes/SPA-Data, respectively. With the growing burden of training deep learning models with large data sets, transfer-learning has been widely adopted in many emerging deep learning algorithms. Transformer models such as BERT are the main player in natural language processing and use transfer-learning as a de facto standard training method. A few big data companies release pre-trained models that are trained with a few popular datasets with which end users and researchers fine-tune the model with their own datasets. Transfer-learning significantly reduces the time and effort of training models. However, it comes at the cost of security concerns. In this paper, we show a new observation that pre-trained models and fine-tuned models have significantly high similarities in weight values. Also, we demonstrate that there exist vendor-specific computing patterns even for the same models. With these new findings, we propose a new model extraction attack that reveals the model architecture and the pre-trained model used by the black-box victim model with vendor-specific computing patterns and then estimates the entire model weights based on the weight value similarities between the fine-tuned model and pre-trained model. We also show that the weight similarity can be leveraged for increasing the model extraction feasibility through a novel weight extraction pruning.

Objective: Interventional MRI (i-MRI) is crucial for MR image-guided therapy. Current image reconstruction methods for dynamic MR imaging are mostly retrospective that may not be suitable for i-MRI in real-time. Therefore, an algorithm to reconstruct images without a temporal pattern as in dynamic imaging is needed for i-MRI. Methods: We proposed a low-rank and sparsity (LS) decomposition algorithm with framelet transform to reconstruct the interventional feature with a high temporal resolution. Different from the existing LS based algorithm, we utilized the spatial sparsity of both the low-rank and sparsity components. We also used a primal dual fixed point (PDFP) method for optimization of the objective function to avoid solving sub-problems. Intervention experiments with gelatin and brain phantoms were carried out for validation. Results: The LS decomposition with framelet transform and PDFP could provide the best reconstruction performance compared with those without. Satisfying reconstruction results were obtained with only 10 radial spokes for a temporal resolution of 60 ms. Conclusion and Significance: The proposed method has the potential for i-MRI in many different application scenarios.

Super-massive black holes (SMBHs) spend most of their lifetime accreting at a rate well below the Eddington limit, manifesting themselves as low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs). The prevalence of a hot wind from LLAGNs is a generic prediction by theories and numerical simulations of black hole accretion and is recently becoming a crucial ingredient of AGN kinetic feedback in cosmological simulations of galaxy evolution. However, direct observational evidence for this hot wind is still scarce. In this work, we identify significant Fe XXVI Ly$\alpha$ and Fe XXV K$\alpha$ emission lines from high-resolution Chandra grating spectra of the LLAGN in NGC\,7213, a nearby Sa galaxy hosting a $\sim10^8\rm~M_\odot$ SMBH, confirming previous work. We find that these lines exhibit a blueshifted line-of-sight velocity of $\sim1100\rm~km s^{-1}$ and a high XXVI Ly$\alpha$ to XXV K$\alpha$ flux ratio implying for a $\sim16$ keV hot plasma. By confronting these spectral features with synthetic X-ray spectra based on our custom magnetohydrodynamical simulations, we find that the high-velocity, hot plasma is naturally explained by the putative hot wind driven by the hot accretion flow powering this LLAGN. Alternative plausible origins of this hot plasma, including stellar activities, AGN photoionization and the hot accretion flow itself, are quantitatively disfavored. The inferred kinetic energy and momentum carried by the wind can serve as strong feedback to the environment. Inspired by the capability of structured illumination microscopy (SIM) in subwavelength imaging, many researchers devoted themselves to investigating this methodology. However, due to the free-propagating feature of the traditional structured illumination fields, the resolution can be only improved up to two-fold of the diffraction-limited microscopy. Besides, most of the previous studies, relying on incoherent illumination sources, are restricted to fluorescent samples. In this work, a subwavelength non-fluorescent imaging method is proposed based on the illumination of terahertz traveling waves and plasmonics. Excited along with a metal grating, the spoof surface plasmons (SSPs) are employed as one of the illuminating sources. When the scattering waves with the SSPs illumination are captured, the sample’s high-order spatial frequencies (SF) components are already encoded into the obtainable low-order ones. Then, a modified post-processing algorithm is exploited to shift the modulated SF components to their actual positions in the SF domain. In this manner, the fine information of samples is introduced to reconstruct the desired imaging, leading to an enhancement of the resolution up to 0.12λ0. Encouragingly, the resolution can be further enhanced by attaching extra illumination of SSPs with an elaborately selected frequency. This method holds promise for some important applications in terahertz non-fluorescent microscopy and sample detection with weak scattering.

As Moore's law is gradually losing its effectiveness, developing alternative high-speed and low-energy-consuming information technology with post-silicon advanced materials is urgently needed. The successful application of tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) has given rise to a tremendous economic impact on magnetic informatics, including MRAM, radio-frequency sensors, microwave generators and neuromorphic computing networks. The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) materials brings opportunities for MTJs based on 2D materials which have many attractive characters and advantages. Especially, the recently discovered intrinsic 2D ferromagnetic materials with high spin-polarization hold the promise for next-generation nanoscale MTJs. With the development of advanced 2D materials, many efforts on MTJs with 2D materials have been made both theoretically and experimentally. Various 2D materials, such as semi-metallic graphene, insulating h-BN, semiconducting MoS2, magnetic semiconducting CrI3, magnetic metallic Fe3GeTe2 and some other recently emerged 2D materials are discussed as the electrodes and/or central scattering materials of MTJs in this review. We discuss the fundamental and main issues facing MTJs, and review the current progress made with 2D MTJs, briefly comment on work with some specific 2D materials, and highlight how they address the current challenges in MTJs, and finally offer an outlook and perspective of 2D MTJs.

The phenomenological study of evolving galaxy populations has shown that star forming galaxies can be quenched by two distinct processes: mass quenching and environment quenching (Peng et al. 2010). To explore the mass quenching process in local galaxies, we study the massive central disk galaxies with stellar mass above the Schechter characteristic mass. In Zhang et al. (2019), we showed that during the quenching of the massive central disk galaxies as their star formation rate (SFR) decreases, their molecular gas mass and star formation efficiency drop rapidly, but their HI gas mass remains surprisingly constant. To identify the underlying physical mechanisms, in this work we analyze the change during quenching of various structure parameters, bar frequency, and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity. We find three closely related facts. On average, as SFR decreases in these galaxies: (1) they become progressively more compact, indicated by their significantly increasing concentration index, bulge-to-total mass ratio, and central velocity dispersion, which are mainly driven by the growth and compaction of their bulge component; (2) the frequency of barred galaxies increases dramatically, and at a given concentration index the barred galaxies have a significantly higher quiescent fraction than unbarred galaxies, implying that the galactic bar may play an important role in mass quenching; and (3) the "AGN" frequency increases dramatically from 10% on the main sequence to almost 100% for the most quiescent galaxies, which is mainly driven by the sharp increase of LINERs. The high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers is the bottleneck of photocatalysis, severely limiting the photocatalytic efficiency. Here, we develop a dipole-scheme (D-scheme for short) photocatalytic model and materials realization. The D-scheme heterojunction not only can effectively separate electrons and holes by a large polarization field, but also boosts photocatalytic redox reactions with large driving photovoltages and without any carrier loss. By means of first-principles and GW calculations, we propose a D-scheme heterojunction prototype with two real polar materials, PtSeTe/LiGaS2. This D-scheme photocatalyst exhibits a high capability of the photogenerated carrier separation and near-infrared light absorption. Moreover, our calculations of the Gibbs free energy imply a high ability of the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction by a large driving force. Novel technologies and new materials are in high demand for future energy-efficient electronic devices to overcome the fundamental limitations of miniaturization of current silicon-based devices. Two-dimensional (2D) materials show promising applications in the next generation devices because they can be tailored on the specific property that a technology is based on, and be compatible with other technologies, such as the silicon-based (opto)electronics. Although the number of experimentally discovered 2D materials is growing, the speed is very slow and only a few dozen 2D materials have been synthesized or exfoliated since the discovery of graphene. Recently, a novel computational technique, dubbed "high-throughput computational materials design", becomes a burgeoning area of materials science, which is the combination of the quantum-mechanical theory, materials genome, and database construction with intelligent data mining. Topological data analysis is a rapidly developing area of data science where one tries to discover topological patterns in data sets to generate insight and knowledge discovery. In this project we use quantum walk algorithms to discover features of a data graph on which the walk takes place. This can be done faster on quantum computers where all paths can be explored using superposition. We begin with simple walks on a polygon and move up to graphs described by higher dimensional meshes. We use insight from the physics description of quantum walks defined in terms of probability amplitudes to go from one site on a graph to another distant site and show how this relates to the Feynman propagator or Kernel in the physics terminology. Our results from quantum computation using IBM's Qiskit quantum computing software were in good agreement with those obtained using classical computing methods.

We study the effective matrix model for for gauge fields and fermions on a quantum computer. We use the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) using IBM QISKit for the effective matrix model for SU(2) and SU(3) including fermions in the fundamental representation. For SU(2) we study the effects of finite temperature and nonzero chemical potential. In all cases we find excellent agreement with the classical computation.

The realization of long-range magnetic ordering in two-dimensional (2D) systems can potentially revolutionize next-generation information technology. Here, we report the successful fabrication of crystalline Cr3Te4 monolayers with room temperature ferromagnetism. Using molecular beam epitaxy, the growth of 2D Cr3Te4 films with monolayer thickness is demonstrated at low substrate temperatures (~100C), compatible with Si CMOS technology. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal a Curie temperature (Tc) of ~344 K for the Cr3Te4 monolayer with an out-of-plane magnetic easy axis, which decreases to ~240 K for the thicker film (~ 7 nm) with an in-plane easy axis. The enhancement of ferromagnetic coupling and the magnetic anisotropy transition is ascribed to interfacial effects, in particular the orbital overlap at the monolayer Cr3Te4/graphite interface, supported by density-functional theory calculations. This work sheds light on the low-temperature scalable growth of 2D nonlayered materials with room temperature ferromagnetism for new magnetic and spintronic devices.

In this paper we present a simple color-magnitude selection and obtain a large sample of 33,893 massive quiescent galaxies at intermediate redshifts (110.5, with a median of log(M*/M_sun)=11.0. A small fraction of our galaxies is also covered by the HST CANDELS. Morphological analysis in the observed H band shows that the majority of this subsample are early-type galaxies. As massive early-type galaxies trace the high density regions in the large scale structure in the universe, our study provides a quick and simple way to obtain a statistical significant sample of massive galaxies in a relative narrow redshift range. Our sample is 7-20 times larger at the massive end (log(M*/M_sun)>10.5) than any existing samples obtained in previous surveys. Electrical control of magnetism of a ferromagnetic semiconductor offers exciting prospects for future spintronic devices for processing and storing information. Here, we report observation of electrically modulated magnetic phase transition and magnetic anisotropy in thin crystal of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (CGT), a layered ferromagnetic semiconductor. We show that heavily electron-doped ($\sim$ $10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$) CGT in an electric double-layer transistor device is found to exhibit hysteresis in magnetoresistance (MR), a clear signature of ferromagnetism, at temperatures up to above 200 K, which is significantly higher than the known Curie temperature of 61 K for an undoped material. Additionally, angle-dependent MR measurements reveal that the magnetic easy axis of this new ground state lies within the layer plane in stark contrast to the case of undoped CGT, whose easy axis points in the out-of-plane direction. We propose that significant doping promotes double-exchange mechanism mediated by free carriers, prevailing over the superexchange mechanism in the insulating state. Our findings highlight that electrostatic gating of this class of materials allows not only charge flow switching but also magnetic phase switching, evidencing their potential for spintronics applications.

Understanding how galaxies maintain the inefficiency of star formation with physically self-consistent models is a central problem for galaxy evolution. Although numerous theoretical models have been proposed in recent decades, the debate still exists. By means of high-resolution two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations, we study the three feedback effects (the stellar wind heating, SNe feedback, and AGN feedback) in suppressing star formation activities on the evolution of early-type galaxies with different stellar masses. AGN feedback models are updated based on \citet{Yuan2018}. The gas sources comes exclusively from the mass losses of dying low-mass stars for most of our models. We find that SNe feedback can keep star formation at a significantly low level for low mass elliptical galaxies for a cosmological evolution time. For the high mass galaxies, AGN feedback can efficiently offset the radiative cooling and thus regulate the star formation activities. Such a suppression of star formation is extremely efficient in the inner region of the galaxies. AGB heating cannot account for this suppression for low and high mass galaxies. The X-ray temperature $T_{\rm X}$ and luminosity $L_{\rm X}$ of hot plasma can be in agreement with the observed data with the inclusion of effective feedback processes. These results thus suggest that we can use $T_{\rm X}$ and $L_{\rm X}$ to probe the role of different feedback processes. The inclusion of additional gas sources can make the mass scale between SNe and AGN feedback dominating in suppressing star formation decrease to an observationally inferred value of a few $10^{10}~M_{\odot}$., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the gluonic probe to the nucleon-nucleon short range correlation (SRC) in nucleus through heavy flavor production in deep inelastic scattering (DIS). The relevant EMC effects of $F_2^{c\bar c}$ structure function will provide a universality test of the SRCs which have been extensively studied in the quark-channel. These SRCs can also be studied through the sub-threshold production of heavy flavor in $eA$ collisions at the intermediate energy electron-ion collider, including open Charm and $J/\psi$ ($\Upsilon$) production., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Dijet azimuthal angle correlation is arguably one of the most direct probes of the medium-induced broadening effects. The evidence for such broadening, however, is not yet clearly observed within the precision of current mid-rapidity measurements at RHIC and the LHC. We show that the dijet correlation in forward rapidity from the future LHC RUN3, aided by forward detector upgrades, can reveal this broadening thanks to the steeper jet spectra, suppressed vacuum radiations and lower underlying event background, with a sensitivity comparable to that of the future high-luminosity Au+Au run at RHIC. We present measurements of the properties of the central radio source in M87 using Event Horizon Telescope data obtained during the 2017 campaign. We develop and fit geometric crescent models (asymmetric rings with interior brightness depressions) using two independent sampling algorithms that consider distinct representations of the visibility data. We show that the crescent family of models is statistically preferred over other comparably complex geometric models that we explore. We calibrate the geometric model parameters using general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) models of the emission region and estimate physical properties of the source. We further fit images generated from GRMHD models directly to the data. We compare the derived emission region and black hole parameters from these analyses with those recovered from reconstructed images. There is a remarkable consistency among all methods and data sets. We find that >50% of the total flux at arcsecond scales comes from near the horizon, and that the emission is dramatically suppressed interior to this region by a factor >10, providing direct evidence of the predicted shadow of a black hole. We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of monolayer VTe2 grown on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite by molecular-beam epitaxy. Using various in-situ microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, including scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray and angle-resolved photoemission, and X-ray absorption, together with theoretical analysis by density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate direct evidence of the metallic 1T phase and 3d1 electronic configuration in monolayer VTe2 that also features a (4 x 4) charge density wave order at low temperatures. In contrast to previous theoretical predictions, our element-specific characterization by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism rules out a ferromagnetic order intrinsic to the monolayer. Our findings provide essential knowledge necessary for understanding this interesting yet less explored metallic monolayer in the emerging family of van der Waals magnets., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

Despite their extraordinary properties, electrides are still a relatively unexplored class of materials with only a few compounds grown experimentally. Especially for layered electrides, the current researches mainly focus on several isostructures of Ca2N with similar interlayer two-dimensional (2D) anionic electrons. An extensive screening for different layered electrides is still missing. Here, by screening materials with anionic electrons for the structures in Materials Project, we uncover 12 existing materials as new layered electrides. Remarkably, these layered electrides demonstrate completely different properties from Ca2N. For example, unusual fully spin-polarized zero-dimensional (0D) anionic electrons are shown in metal halides with MoS2-like structures; unique one-dimensional (1D) anionic electrons are confined within the tubes of the quasi-1D structures; a coexistence of magnetic and non-magnetic anionic electrons is found in ZrCl-like structures and a new ternary Ba2LiN with both 0D and 1D anionic electrons. These materials not only significantly increase the pool of experimentally synthesizable layered electrides but also are promising to be exfoliated into advanced 2D materials.

During the past decade, model-based recommendation methods have evolved from latent factor models to neural network-based models. Most of these techniques mainly focus on improving the overall performance, such as the root mean square error for rating predictions and hit ratio for top-N recommendation, where the users' feedback is considered as the ground-truth. However, in real-world applications, the users' feedback is possibly contaminated by imperfect user behaviours, namely, careless preference selection. Such data contamination poses challenges on the design of robust recommendation methods. In this work, to address the above issue, we propose a general adversial training framework for neural network-based recommendation models, which improves both the model robustness and the overall performance. We point out the tradeoffs between performance and robustness enhancement with detailed instructions on how to strike a balance. Specifically, we implement our approach on the collaborative auto-encoder, followed by experiments on three public available datasets: MovieLens-1M, Ciao, and FilmTrust. We show that our approach outperforms highly competitive state-of-the-art recommendation methods. In addition, we carry out a thorough analysis on the noise impacts, as well as the complex interactions between model nonlinearity and noise levels. Through simple modifications, our adversarial training framework can be applied to a host of neural network-based models whose robustness and performance are expected to be both enhanced.

We study the multiple soft gluon radiation effects in $Z$ boson plus jet production at the LHC. By applying the transverse momentum dependent factorization formalism, the large logarithms introduced by the small total transverse momentum of the $Z$ boson plus jet final state system, are resummed to all orders in the expansion of the strong interaction coupling at the accuracy of Next-to-Leading Logarithm(NLL). We also compare the prediction of our resummation calculation to the CMS data by employing a reweighting procedure to estimate the effect from imposing kinematic cuts on the leptons from $Z$ boson decay, and find good agreement for both the imbalance transverse momentum and the azimuthal angle correlation of the final state $Z$ boson and jet system, for $pp\to Z+jet$ production at the LHC., Comment: 7 pages, published version

Observations have shown that UV/optical variation amplitude of quasars depend on several physi- cal parameters including luminosity, Eddington ratio, and likely also black hole mass. Identifying new factors which correlate with the variation is essential to probe the underlying physical processes. Combining ~ten years long quasar light curves from SDSS stripe 82 and X-ray data from Stripe 82X, we build a sample of X-ray detected quasars to investigate the relation between UV/optical variation amplitude ($\sigma_{rms}$) and X-ray loudness. We find that quasars with more intense X-ray radiation (com- pared to bolometric luminosity) are more variable in UV/optical. Such correlation remains highly significant after excluding the effect of other parameters including luminosity, black hole mass, Ed- dington ratio, redshift, rest-frame wavelength (i.e., through partial correlation analyses). We further find the intrinsic link between X-ray loudness and UV/optical variation is gradually more prominent on longer timescales (up to 10 years in the observed frame), but tends to disappear at timescales < 100 days. This suggests a slow and long-term underlying physical process. The X-ray reprocessing paradigm, in which UV/optical variation is produced by a variable central X-ray emission illuminating the accretion disk, is thus disfavored. The discovery points to an interesting scheme that both the X-ray corona heating and UV/optical variation is quasars are closely associated with magnetic disc turbulence, and the innermost disc turbulence (where corona heating occurs) correlates with the slow turbulence at larger radii (where UV/optical emission is produced)., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted by ApJ

We study how star formation (SF) is quenched in low-redshift disk galaxies with integral-field spectroscopy. We select 131 face-on spiral galaxies with stellar mass greater than $\rm 3\times10^{10}M_\odot$, and with spatially resolved spectrum from MaNGA DR13. We subdivide the sample into four groups based on the offset of their global specific star formation rate (SFR) from the star-forming main sequence and stack the radial profiles of stellar mass and SFR. By comparing the stacked profiles of quiescent and star-forming disk galaxies, we find that the decrease of the global SFR is caused by the suppression of SF at all radii, but with a more significant drop from the center to the outer regions following an inside-out pattern. As the global specific SFR decreases, the central stellar mass, the fraction of disk galaxies hosting stellar bars, and active galactic nuclei (AGNs; including both LINERs and Seyferts) all increase, indicating dynamical processes and AGN feedback are possible contributors to the inside-out quenching of SF in the local universe. However, if we include only Seyferts, or AGNs with ${\rm EW(H\alpha)>3\AA}$, the increasing trend of AGN fraction with decreasing global sSFR disappears. We investigate the QCD resummation for the Higgs boson plus a high $P_T$ jet production with large rapidity separations in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The relevant Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) and Sudakov logs are identified and resummed. This is the second paper of our series of works of studying the effects of active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback on the cosmological evolution of an isolated elliptical galaxy by performing two-dimensional high-resolution hydrodynamical numerical simulations. In these simulations, the inner boundary is chosen so that the Bondi radius is resolved. Physical processes like star formation, SNe Ia and II are taken into account. Compared to previous works, the main improvements is that we adopt the most updated AGN physics, which is described in detail in the first paper of this series (Yuan et al. 2018, Paper I). These improvements include the discrimination of the two accretion modes of the central AGN and the most updated descriptions of the wind and radiation in the two modes. In Paper I, we consider the case that the specific angular momentum of the gas in the galaxy is very low. In this paper, we consider the case that the specific angular momentum of the gas is high. In the galactic scale, we adopt the gravitational torques raised due to non-axisymmetric structure in the galaxy as the mechanism of the transfer of angular momentum of gas, as proposed in some recent works. Since our simulations are axisymmetric, we make use of a parameterized prescription to mimic this mechanism. Same as Paper I, we investigate the AGN light curve, typical AGN lifetime, growth of the black hole mass, AGN duty-cycle, star formation, and the X-ray surface brightness of the galaxy. Special attention is paid to the effects of specific angular momentum of the galaxy on these properties. We find that some results are qualitatively similar to those shown in Paper I, while some results such as star formation and black hole growth do show a significant difference due to the mass concentration in the galactic disk as a consequence of galactic rotation., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication to ApJ (Revised to match version published in ApJ)

A correlation among the radio luminosity ($L_{\rm R}$), X-ray luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$), and black hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and black hole binaries is known to exist and is called the "Fundamental Plane" of black hole activity. Yuan & Cui (2005) predicts that the radio/X-ray correlation index, $��_{\rm X}$, changes from $��_{\rm X}\approx 0.6$ to $��_{\rm X}\approx 1.2-1.3$ when $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd}$ decreases below a critical value $\sim 10^{-6}$. While many works favor such a change, there are also several works claiming the opposite. In this paper, we gather from literature a largest quiescent AGN (defined as $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd} < 10^{-6}$) sample to date, consisting of $75$ sources. We find that these quiescent AGNs follow a $��_{\rm X}\approx 1.23$ radio/X-ray relationship, in excellent agreement with the Yuan \& Cui prediction. The reason for the discrepancy between the present result and some previous works is that their samples contain not only quiescent sources but also "normal" ones (i.e., $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd} > 10^{-6}$). In this case, the quiescent sources will mix up with those normal ones in $L_{\rm R}$ and $L_{\rm X}$. The value of $��_{\rm X}$ will then be between $0.6$ and $\sim1.3$, with the exact value being determined by the sample composition, i.e., the fraction of the quiescent and normal sources. Based on this result, we propose that a more physical way to study the Fundamental Plane is to replace $L_{\rm R}$ and $L_{\rm X}$ with $L_{\rm R}/L_{\rm Edd}$ and $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd}$, respectively., 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We study the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions at small-x in a consistent framework that takes into account the TMD evolution and small-x evolution simultaneously. The small-x evolution effects are included by computing the TMDs at appropriate scales in terms of the dipole scattering amplitudes, which obey the relevant Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. Meanwhile, the TMD evolution is obtained by resumming the Collins-Soper type large logarithms emerged from the calculations in small-x formalism into Sudakov factors., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

The analysis of clouds in the earth's atmosphere is important for a variety of applications, viz. weather reporting, climate forecasting, and solar energy generation. In this paper, we focus our attention on the impact of cloud on the total solar irradiance reaching the earth's surface. We use weather station to record the total solar irradiance. Moreover, we employ collocated ground-based sky camera to automatically compute the instantaneous cloud coverage. We analyze the relationship between measured solar irradiance and computed cloud coverage value, and conclude that higher cloud coverage greatly impacts the total solar irradiance. AGN feedback is now widely believed to play a crucial role in the co-evolution between the central black hole and its host galaxy. Two feedback modes have been identified, namely the radiative and kinetic modes, which correspond to the luminous AGNs and low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs), respectively. In this paper, we investigate the radiative heating in the kinetic mode. This process is potentially important because: 1) the radiation power of LLAGNs is higher than the jet power over a wide parameter range, 2) the spectral energy distribution of LLAGNs is such that the radiative heating is more effective compared to that of luminous AGNs with the same luminosity, and 3) most of the time in the lifecycle of an AGN is spent in the LLAGNs phase. In this paper, adopting the characteristic broad-band spectral energy distributions of LLAGNs, we calculate the value of "Compton temperature" ($T_{\rm c}$), which determines the radiative heating by Compton scattering. We find that $T_{\rm c}\sim (5-15)\times 10^7$ K, depending on the spectrum of individual LLAGN and at which distance from the black hole we evaluate the heating. We also compare this heating process with other radiative heating and cooling processes such as photoionization/recombination. Probabilistic automata were introduced by Rabin in 1963 as language acceptors. Two automata are equivalent if and only if they accept each word with the same probability. On the other side, in the process algebra community, probabilistic automata were re-proposed by Segala in 1995 which are more general than Rabin's automata. Bisimulations have been proposed for Segala's automata to characterize the equivalence between them. So far the two notions of equivalences and their characteristics have been studied mostly independently. In this paper, we consider Segala's automata, and propose a novel notion of distribution-based bisimulation by joining the existing equivalence and bisimilarities. We demonstrate the utility of our definition by studying distribution-based bisimulation metrics, which gives rise to a robust notion of equivalence for Rabin's automata. We compare our notions of bisimulation to some existing distribution-based bisimulations and discuss their compositionality and relations to trace equivalence. We solve the two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations of black hole accretion with the presence of magnetic field. The field includes a turbulent component, whose role is represented by the viscosity, and a large-scale ordered component. The latter is further assumed to be evenly symmetric with the equatorial plane. The equations are solved in the $r-\theta$ plane of a spherical coordinate by assuming time-steady and radially self-similar. An inflow-wind solution is found. Around the equatorial plane, the gas is inflowing; while above and below the equatorial plane at a certain critical $\theta$ angle, $\theta\sim 47^{\circ}$, the inflow changes its direction of radial motion and becomes wind. The driving forces are analyzed and found to be the centrifugal force and the gradient of gas and magnetic pressure. The properties of wind are also calculated. The specific angular momentum of wind is found to be significantly larger than that of inflow, thus wind can transfer angular momentum outward. The mechanism responsible for the extraordinary interface conductivity of LaAlO$_{3}$ on SrTiO$_{3}$ and its insulator-metal transition remains controversial. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we establish a comprehensive and coherent picture that the interplay of electronic reconstructions, lattice distortions, and surface oxygen vacancies fully compensates the polarization potential divergence in LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$, explaining naturally the experimental observations under different conditions. While lattice distortions and a charge redistribution between LaO and AlO$_2$ sub-layers play a dominant role in insulating state, a spontaneous appearance of 1/4 oxygen vacancies per AlO$_{2}$ sub-layer at the LaAlO$_{3}$ surface accompanied by 0.5$e^{-}$ charge-transfer into the interface is responsible for interface conductivity and the discontinuous transition in LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$. We study the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) evolution of the Collins azimuthal asymmetries in $e^+e^-$ annihilations and semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes. All the relevant coefficients are calculated up to the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order accuracy. By applying the TMD evolution at the approximate NLL order in the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism, we extract transversity distributions for $u$ and $d$ quarks and Collins fragmentation functions from current experimental data by a global analysis of the Collins asymmetries in back-to-back di-hadron productions in $e^+e^-$ annihilations measured by BELLE and BABAR Collaborations and SIDIS data from HERMES, COMPASS, and JLab HALL A experiments. The impact of the evolution effects and the relevant theoretical uncertainties are discussed. We further discuss the TMD interpretation for our results, and illustrate the unpolarized quark distribution, transversity distribution, unpolarized quark fragmentation and Collins fragmentation functions depending on the transverse momentum and the hard momentum scale. Sgr A* is probably the supermassive black hole being investigated most extensively due to its proximity. Several theoretical models for its steady state emission have been proposed in the past two decades. Both the radiative-inefficient accretion flow and the jet model have been shown to well explain the observed spectral energy distribution. Faraday rotation measure (RM) has been unambiguously measured at submillimeter wavelength, but has only been tested against the accretion flow model. Here we first calculate the RM based on the jet model and find that the predicted value is two orders of magnitude lower than the measured value. We then include an additional contribution from the accretion flow in front of the jet and show that the measured RM may be reconciled with the model under some tight constraints. The main constraint is that the inclination angle should be greater than $\sim 73^{\circ}$. A pair of giant gamma-ray bubbles have been revealed by the {\it Fermi} LAT. In this paper we investigate their formation mechanism. Observations have indicated that the activity of the supermassive black hole located at the Galactic center, Sgr A*, was much stronger than the present time. Specifically, one possibility is that while Sgr A* was also in the hot accretion regime, the accretion rate should be $10^3-10^4$ times higher during the past $\sim 10^7$ yr. On the other hand, recent MHD numerical simulations of hot accretion flows have unambiguously shown the existence of strong winds and obtained their properties. Based on these knowledge, by performing three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations, we show in this paper that the Fermi bubbles could be inflated by winds launched from the ``past' hot accretion flow in Sgr A*. In our model, the active phase of Sgr A* is required to last for about 10 million years and it was quenched no more than 0.2 million years ago. The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) is included and it collimates the wind orientation towards the Galactic poles. Viscosity suppresses the Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities and results in the smoothness of the bubble edge. The main observational features of the bubbles can be well explained. Specifically, the {\it ROSAT} X-ray features are interpreted by the shocked interstellar medium and the interaction region between winds and CMZ gas.
