We present the latest results from the search for light dark matter particle interactions with the DarkSide-50 dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber. This analysis, based on the ionization signal only, improves the existing limits for spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions in the $[1.2, 3.6]$ GeV/c$^2$ mass range. The sensitivity is extended down to 40 MeV/c$^2$ by assuming the Migdal effect, responsible for an additional ionization signal from the recoiling atom. Finally, we set new constraints to interactions of dark matter particles with electrons in the final state, namely WIMPs, galactic axions, dark photons, and sterile neutrinos., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Gravitational waves can generate electromagnetic effects inside a strong electric or magnetic field within the Standard Model and general relativity. Here we propose using a quarterly split cavity and LC-resonance circuit to detect a high-frequency gravitational wave from 0.1 MHz to GHz. We perform a full 3D simulation of the cavity's signal for sensitivity estimate. Our sensitivity depends on the coherence time scale of the high-frequency gravitational wave sources and the volume size of the split cavity. We discuss the resonant measurement schemes for narrow-band gravitational wave sources and also a non-resonance scheme for broadband signals. For a meter-sized split cavity under a 14 Tesla magnetic field, the LC resonance enhanced sensitivity to the gravitational wave strain is expected to reach $h\sim 10^{-20}$ around $10$ MHz., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Supernova (SN) H0pe was discovered as a new transient in James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam images of the galaxy cluster PLCK G165.7+67.0 taken as part of the "Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science" (PEARLS) JWST GTO program (# 1176) on 2023 March 30 (AstroNote 2023-96; Frye et al. 2023). The transient is a compact source associated with a background galaxy that is stretched and triply-imaged by the cluster's strong gravitational lensing. This paper reports spectra in the 950-1370 nm observer frame of two of the galaxy's images obtained with Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) Utility Camera in the Infrared (LUCI) in longslit mode two weeks after the \JWST\ observations. The individual average spectra show the [OII] doublet and the Balmer and 4000 Angstrom breaks at redshift z=1.783+/-0.002. The CIGALE best-fit model of the spectral energy distribution indicates that SN H0pe's host galaxy is massive (Mstar~6x10^10 Msun after correcting for a magnification factor ~7) with a predominant intermediate age (~2 Gyr) stellar population, moderate extinction, and a magnification-corrected star formation rate ~13 Msun/yr, consistent with being below the main sequence of star formation. These properties suggest that H0pe might be a type Ia SN. Additional observations of SN H0pe and its host recently carried out with JWST (JWST-DD-4446; PI: B. We propose a parametric model for studying self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) halos. The model uses an analytical density profile, calibrated using a controlled N-body SIDM simulation that covers the entire gravothermal evolution, including core-forming and -collapsing phases. By normalizing the calibrated density profile, we obtain a universal description for SIDM halos at any evolution phase. The model allows us to infer properties of SIDM halos based on their cold dark matter (CDM) counterparts. As a basic application, we only require two characteristic parameters of an isolated CDM halo at $z=0$. We then extend the model to incorporate effects induced by halo mass changes, such as major mergers or tidal stripping, making it applicable to both isolated halos and subhalos. The parametric model is tested and validated using cosmological zoom-in SIDM simulations available in the literature., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

We study evolution of quantum fluctuations of gravity around an inflationary solution in renormalizable quantum gravity that asymptotically indicates background freedom represented by a special conformal invariance. Inflation ignites at the Planck scale and continues until spacetime phase transition occurs at a dynamical scale about $10^{17}$GeV. We can show that during inflation, the initially large scale-invariant fluctuations reduce in amplitude to the appropriate magnitude suggested by tiny CMB anisotropies. The goal of this research is to derive spectra of fluctuations at the phase transition point, that is, the primordial spectra. A system of nonlinear evolution equations for the fluctuations is derived from the quantum gravity effective action. The running coupling constant is then expressed by a time-dependent average following the spirit of the mean field approximation. In this paper, we determine and examine various nonlinear terms, not treated in previous studies such as the exponential factor of the conformal mode, that contribute at the early stage of inflation with still large amplitude. Moreover, in order to verify their effects concretely, we numerically solve the evolution equation by making a simplification to extract the most contributing parts of the terms in comoving momentum space. The result indicates that they serve to maintain the initial scale invariance over a wide range beyond the comoving Planck scale. This is a challenge toward derivation of the precise primordial spectra, and we expect in the future that it will lead to the resolution of the tensions that have arisen in cosmology., Comment: 40 pages, 10 figures

The use of multiple independent methods with their own systematic uncertainties is crucial for resolving the ongoing tension between local and distant measurements of the Hubble constant ($H_{0}$). While type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) have historically been the most widely used distance indicators, recent studies have shown that type II supernovae (SNe II) can provide independent measurements of extragalactic distances with different systematic uncertainties. Unlike SNe Ia, the progenitors of SNe II are well understood, arising from the explosion of red supergiants in late-type galaxies via core-collapse. While SNe II do not exhibit the same level of uniformity in peak luminosity as SNe Ia, their differences can be calibrated using theoretical or empirical methods. Overall, this chapter presents a comprehensive overview of the use of SNe II as extragalactic distance indicators, with a particular focus on their application to measuring $H_0$ and addressing the Hubble tension. We describe the underlying theory of each method, discuss the challenges associated with them, including uncertainties in the calibration of the supernova absolute magnitude, and present a comprehensive list of the most updated Hubble constant measurements., Comment: Invited chapter for the edited book "Hubble Constant Tension" (Eds. We present a new class of models that have potential to alleviate tensions present in the cosmological data today. We postulate variation in the sound horizon scale on super-horizon scales, i.e. on scales that are larger than that of the present observable low-redshift universe ($\gtrsim 1\,$Gpc) while at the same time smaller than the largest scales probed by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) ($\lesssim10\,$Gpc). In this scenario, CMB peaks are naturally smoothed as preferred by the Planck data, while at the same time the low-redshift baryon acoustic oscillation calibration is partially decoupled from the CMB. Taking super-horizon variations in baryon fraction as an example and using approximate modeling, we find improvement in the best fit Planck power spectrum model $\Delta \chi^2 \sim 6$ for one extra degree of freedom with the relevant extension parameter $10^3 \sigma_b = 2.12 \pm 0.50 $, implying about 10\% variations in baryon fraction across the universe. At the same time, $S_8$ drops by about 1 sigma, easing tension with weak lensing surveys. While $H_0$ increases in this model by about 1 sigma, this is insufficient to explain the Hubble tension in $\Lambda$CDM. Since the power of low redshift BAO is relaxed, we find that the combination of Planck 2018 data, eBOSS BAO data and Riess et al distance ladder Hubble parameter determination produce a satisfactory fit in the model with free dark energy equation of state. We investigate how our baryon-loss limits from anomalous binary-pulsar period lengthening can be interpreted microscopically to yield specific constraints on the particle physics of baryon number violation within a neutron star. We focus on the possibility of anomalous baryon disappearance via dark baryon processes and on scenarios in which the produced dark-sector particles do not survive to influence the response of the star to baryon-number-violating effects. We flesh out the conditions for which this may occur, as well as other key assumptions. We then turn to the analysis of particle processes in the dense nuclear medium found at the core of a neutron star, employing the techniques of relativistic mean-field theory. Using our study of in-medium effects and limits on macroscopic baryon number violation we extract limits on in-vacuum baryon-number-violating processes, and we determine them for various equations of state. We conclude by noting the implications of our results for models of dark-sector-enabled baryogenesis., Comment: 84 pages, 18 figures

Galaxy-scale strongly lensed systems have been shown to provide a unique technique for exploring the underlying physics of dark matter at sub-galactic scales. In the past, much attention was given to detecting and studying individual haloes in a strong lens system. In addition to the subhaloes, line-of-sight haloes contribute significantly to the small perturbations in lensed images. In prior work, we demonstrated that these line-of-sight haloes imprint a distinctive anisotropic signature and hence give rise to a detectable non-zero parity-even quadrupole moment in the effective convergence field's two-point correlation function. In this study, we show that these line-of-sight haloes also produce a non-zero curl component of the effective deflection field with a parity-odd quadrupole moment of the two-point function. These multipole moments have the ability to statistically separate line-of-sight haloes from dark matter substructure. In this paper, we examine how these multipole moments evolve in the presence of warm dark matter and self-interacting dark matter in terms of central density evolution and dark matter halo abundance. Importantly, we show that these different multipole moments display exquisite sensitivity to both the amplitude and the velocity dependence of the dark matter self-interaction cross-section. We present a strategy to obtain equations of general relativity for an irrotational dust continuum within a flow-orthogonal foliation of spacetime from the equations of Newtonian gravitation, and vice versa, without employing a weak field expansion or a limiting process on the speed of light. We argue that writing Newton's equations in a Lagrangian frame and relaxing integrability of vector gradients is sufficient to obtain equations that are identical to Einstein's equations in 3+1 form when respecting the Lorentzian signature of the time-parametrization. In the framework of scalar-tensor gravity, we consider non-flat interacting quintessence cosmology where a scalar field is interacting with dark matter. Such a scalar field can be a standard or a phantom one. We use the Noether Symmetry Approach to obtain general exact solutions for cosmological equations and to select scalar-field self-interaction potentials. It turns out that the found solutions can reproduce the accelerated expansion of the Universe, and are compatible with observational dataset, as the SNeIa Pantheon data, gamma ray bursts Hubble diagram, and direct measurements of the Hubble parameter., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, in press on: Phys.Dark Univ. For a cosmological first-order phase transition in the early Universe, the associated stochastic gravitational wave background is usually dominated by sound waves from plasma fluid motions, which have been analytically modeled as a random superposition of freely propagating sound shells but with the force by the scalar field that produces the self-similar profile removed. In this Letter, we propose a new analytic sound shell model by focusing on the forced propagating contribution from the initial collision stage of sound shells when their self-similar profiles are still maintained by the moving bubble walls. We reproduce the causal $k^3$ scaling in the infrared consistent with numerical simulations, and also recover the broad dome in the power spectrum first observed in numerical simulations. It is well known that the first structures that form from small fluctuations in a self-gravitating, collisionless and initially smooth cold dark matter (CDM) fluid are pancakes. We study the gravitational force generated by such pancakes just after shell-crossing, and find a simple analytical formula for the force along the collapse direction, which can be applied to both the single- and multi-stream regimes. The formula is tested on the early growth of CDM protohaloes seeded by two or three crossed sine waves. Adopting the high-order Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT) solution as a proxy for the dynamics, we confirm that our analytical prediction agrees well with the exact solution computed by direct resolution of the Poisson equation, as long as the caustic structure remains locally sufficiently one-dimensional. These results are further confirmed by comparisons of the LPT predictions performed this way to measurements in Vlasov simulations performed with the public code ColDICE. We also show that the component of the force orthogonal to the collapse direction preserves its single stream nature by not changing qualitatively before and after the collapse, allowing sufficiently high-order LPT acceleration to be used to approximate it accurately as long as the LPT series converges. As expected, solving Poisson equation on the density field generated with LPT displacement provides a more accurate force than the LPT acceleration itself, as a direct consequence of the faster convergence of the LPT series for the positions than for the accelerations. This may provide a clue on improving standard LPT predictions. Recent studies suggest spectroscopic differences explain a fraction of the variation in Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) luminosities after light-curve/color standardization. In this work, (i) we empirically characterize the variations of standardized SN Ia luminosities, and (ii) we use a spectroscopically inferred parameter, SIP, to improve the precision of SNe Ia along the distance ladder and the determination of the Hubble constant ($H_0$). First, we show that the \texttt{Pantheon+} covariance model modestly overestimates the uncertainty of standardized magnitudes by $\sim 7$%, in the parameter space used by the $\texttt{SH0ES}$ Team to measure $H_0$; accounting for this alone yields $H_0 = 73.01 \pm 0.92$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. Furthermore, accounting for spectroscopic similarity between SNe~Ia on the distance ladder reduces their relative scatter to $\sim0.12$ mag per object (compared to $\sim 0.14$ mag previously). Combining these two findings in the model of SN covariance, we find an overall 14% reduction (to $\pm 0.85$km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$) of the uncertainty in the Hubble constant and a modest increase in its value. Including a budget for systematic uncertainties itemized by Riess et al. (2022a), we report an updated local Hubble constant with $\sim1.2$% uncertainty, $H_0 = 73.29 \pm 0.90$km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. We conclude that spectroscopic differences among photometrically standardized SNe Ia do not explain the ``Hubble tension." Rather, accounting for such differences increases its significance, as the discrepancy against $\Lambda$CDM calibrated by the ${\it Planck}$ 2018 measurement rises to 5.7$\sigma$., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, accepted to JCAP

The atomic hydrogen (HI) properties of star-forming galaxies in the local Universe are known to correlate with other galaxy properties via the ``HI scaling relations''. The redshift evolution of these relations serves as an important constraint on models of galaxy evolution. However, until recently, there were no estimates of the HI scaling relations at cosmological distances. Using data from a deep Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope HI 21 cm survey of the Extended Groth Strip, and the technique of spectral line stacking, we determine the scaling relation between the HI mass and the stellar mass for star-forming galaxies at $z\approx0.35$. We use this measurement, along with the main-sequence relation in galaxies, to infer the dependence of the HI depletion timescale of these galaxies on their stellar mass. We find that massive star-forming galaxies at $z\approx0.35$, with stellar mass $\rm M_* \gtrsim10^{9.5}\:M_{\odot}$, are HI-poor compared to local star-forming galaxies of a similar stellar mass. However, their characteristic HI depletion time is lower by a factor of $\approx 5$ than that of their local analogues, indicating a higher star-formation efficiency at intermediate redshifts (similar to that at $z \approx 1$). While our results are based on a relatively small cosmic volume and could thus be affected by cosmic variance, the short characteristic HI depletion timescales ($\lesssim 3$ Gyr) of massive star-forming galaxies at $z \approx 0.35$ indicate that they must have acquired a significant amount of neutral gas through accretion from the circumgalactic medium over the past four Gyr, to avoid quenching of their star-formation activity., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We explore the gravitational wave spectrum generated by string-wall structures in an $SO(10)$ ($Spin(10)$) based scenario of pseudo-Goldstone boson dark matter (pGDM) particle. This dark matter candidate is a linear combination of the Standard Model (SM) singlets present in the 126 and 16 dimensional Higgs fields. The Higgs $126$-plet vacuum expectation value (VEV) $\left$ leaves unbroken the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ subgroup of $\mathbb{Z}_4$, the center of $SO(10)$. Among other things, this yields topologically stable cosmic strings with a string tension $μ\sim \left^2$. The subsequent (spontaneous) breaking of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ at a significantly lower scale by the $16$-plet VEV $\left$ leads to the appearance of domain walls bounded by the strings produced earlier. We display the gravitational wave spectrum for $G μ$ values varying between $10^{-15}$ and $10^{-9}$ ($\left\sim 10^{11}$ - $10^{14}$ GeV), and $\left\sim 0.1$ - $10^3$ TeV range ($G$ denotes Newton's constant.) These predictions can be tested, as we show, by a variety of (proposed) experiments including LISA, ET, CE and others., 8 pages, 3 figures

Context: A non-linear relation between quasar monochromatic luminosities at 2500A and 2 keV holds at all observed redshifts and luminosities, and it has been used to derive quasar distances and to build a Hubble Diagram of quasars. The choice of the X-ray and UV indicators has so far been somewhat arbitrary, and has typically relied on photometric data. Aims: We want to determine the X-ray and UV proxies that provide the smallest dispersion of the relation, in order to obtain more precise distance estimates, and to confirm the reliability of the X-ray to UV relation as a distance indicator. Methods: We performed a complete UV spectroscopic analysis of a sample of $\sim$1800 quasars with SDSS optical spectra and XMM- Newton X-ray serendipitous observations. In the X-rays, we analysed the spectra of all the sample objects at redshift z $>$1.9, while we relied on photometric measurements at lower redshifts. As done in previous studies, we analysed the relation in small redshift bins, using fluxes instead of luminosities. Results: We show that the monochromatic fluxes at 1 keV and 2500A are, respectively, the best X-ray and UV continuum indicators among those that are typically available. We also find a tight relation between soft X-ray and Mg ii2800A line fluxes, and a marginal dependence of the X-ray to UV relation on the width of the Mg ii line. Conclusions: Our analysis suggests that the physical quantities that are more tightly linked to one another are the soft X-ray flux at $\sim$1 keV and the ionizing UV flux blueward of the Lyman limit. However, the "usual" monochromatic fluxes at 2 keV and 2500A estimated from photometric data provide an almost as-tight X-ray to UV relation, and can be used to derive quasar distances. Unimodular gravity is an alternative theory of gravity to general relativity. The gravitational field equations are given by the trace-free version of Einstein's field equations. Due to the structure of the theory, unimodular gravity admits a diffusion term that characterizes a possible non-conservation of the canonical energy-momentum tensor locally. Employing this feature of unimodular gravity, in the present work, we explicitly show how to construct an inflationary phase that can be contrasted with current observations. In particular, we focus on three different inflationary scenarios of physical interest. An important element in these scenarios is that the accelerated expansion is driven by the diffusion term exclusively, i.e. there is no inflaton. Furthermore, the primordial spectrum during inflation is generated by considering inhomogeneous perturbations associated to standard hydrodynamical matter (modeled as a single ultra-relativistic fluid). For each of the scenarios, we obtain the prediction for the primordial spectrum and contrast it with recent observational bounds., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures (15 plots)

Ultralight bosons are well-motivated particles from various physical and cosmological theories, and can be spontaneously produced during the superradiant process, forming a dense hydrogen-like cloud around the spinning black hole. After the growth saturates, the cloud slowly depletes its mass through gravitational-wave emission. In this work we study the orbit dynamics of a binary system containing such a gravitational atom saturated in various spin-0,1,2 superradiant states, taking into account both the effects of dynamical friction and the cloud mass depletion. We estimate the significance of mass depletion, finding that although dynamical friction could dominate the inspiral phase, it typically does not affect the outspiral phase driven by the mass depletion. Focusing on the large orbit radius, we investigate the condition to observe the outspiral, and the detectability of the cloud via pulsar-timing signal in the case of black hole-pulsar binary., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

The Hubble constant ${H}_0$ is a crucial parameter in cosmology. However, different cosmic observations have resulted in varying posterior results for ${H}_0$, leading to what is known as the ${H}_0$ tension. In order to address this issue, it is beneficial to use other dataset to constrain ${H}_0$. In this paper, via the cosmographic approach based on the Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric to the dispersion measure of the intergalactic medium ${\rm{DM}}_{\rm{IGM}}(z)$ of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), we obtain the Taylor expansion of $\langle{\rm{DM}}_{\rm{IGM}}(z)\rangle$ in terms redshift $z$. The result for Hubble constant $H_0=65.5^{+6.4}_{-5.4}$ ${\rm{km~s^{-1}~Mpc^{-1}}}$ $(68$$\%$ ${\rm{C.L.}}) $, cosmological deceleration parameter $q_0=-0.50\pm 0.20 $ and the jerk parameter $j_0=-0.1^{+2.0}_{-2.5}$ using uncalibrated Supernova Ia (SNe Ia) Pantheon dataset combined with 18 localized FRBs are obtained. To demonstrate the impact of parameter degeneracies on our analysis methods, we compare the results using three different forms of $f_{\rm{IGM}}(z)$ and two different prior distributions for $\Omega_{\rm{b,0}}$. Then we find that the uncertainty in $H_0$ is not significantly affected by the prior range of $f_{\rm{IGM}}(z)$ and $\Omega_{\rm{b,0}}$, but the mean value is influenced by the priors for $f_{\rm{IGM}}(z)$ and $\Omega_{\rm{b,0}}$ due to parameter degeneracies with $H_0$. Employing $f_{\rm{IGM}}(z)$ that evolves with redshift, we obtain the constraints for $H_0=69.0^{+6.7}_{-5.7}$ ${\rm{km~s^{-1}~Mpc^{-1}}}$. Furthermore, the mock analyses give a posterior estimation of $H_0$ with an accuracy of 4.6\% and higher precision for $q_0$ and $j_0$ in the near future.

Large-scale numerical simulations ($\gtrsim 500\rm{Mpc}$) of cosmic reionization are required to match the large survey volume of the upcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA). We present a multi-fidelity emulation technique for generating large-scale lightcone images of cosmic reionization. We first train generative adversarial networks (GAN) on small-scale simulations and transfer that knowledge to large-scale simulations with hundreds of training images. Our method achieves high accuracy in generating lightcone images, as measured by various statistics with mostly percentage errors. This approach saves computational resources by 90% compared to conventional training methods. We use public data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) to measure radial profiles of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and dust emission around massive quiescent galaxies at $z\approx1.$ Using survey data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and Wide-Field infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), we selected $387,627$ quiescent galaxies within the ACT field, with a mean stellar $\log_{10}(M_{\star}/\rm{M_{\odot}})$ of $11.40$. A subset of $94,452$ galaxies, with a mean stellar $\log_{10}(M_{\star}/\rm{M_{\odot}})$ of $11.36,$ are also covered by SPT. In $0.5$ arcminute radial bins around these galaxies, we detect the tSZ profile at levels up to $11\sigma$, and dust profile up to $20\sigma.$ Both profiles are extended, and the dust profile slope at large radii is consistent with galaxy clustering. We analyze the thermal energy and dust mass versus stellar mass via integration within $R=2.0$ arcminute circular apertures and fit them with a forward-modeled power-law to correct for our photometric stellar mass uncertainty. At the mean log stellar mass of our overlap and wide-area samples, respectively, we extract thermal energies from the tSZ of $E_{\rm{pk}}=6.45_{-1.52}^{+1.67}\times10^{60}{\rm{ erg}}$ and $8.20_{-0.52}^{+0.52}\times10^{60}{\rm{ erg}},$ most consistent with moderate to high levels of active galactic nuclei feedback acting upon the circumgalactic medium. Dust masses at the mean log stellar mass are $M_{\rm{d,pk}}=6.23_{-0.67}^{+0.67}\times10^{8}\rm{ M_{\odot}}$ and $6.76_{-0.56}^{+0.56}\times10^{8}\rm{ M_{\odot}},$ and we find a greater than linear dust-to-stellar mass relation, which indicates that the more massive galaxies in our study retain more dust. CUSP is a powerful formalism that recovers, from first principles and with no free parameter, all the macroscopic properties of dark matter haloes found in cosmological N-body simulations and unveils the origin of their characteristic features. Since it is not restricted by the limitations of simulations, it covers the whole mass and redshift ranges. In the present Paper we use CUSP to calculate the mass-scale relations holding for halo density profiles fitted to the usual NFW and Einasto functions in the most relevant cosmologies and for the most usual mass definitions. We clarify the origin of these relations and provide accurate analytic expressions holding for all masses and redshifts. The performance of those expressions is compared to that of previous models and to the mass-concentration relation spanning more than 20 orders of magnitude in mass at $z=0$ obtained in recent simulations of a 100 GeV WIMP universe., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the colour and star formation rates of paired galaxies in filaments and sheets using the EAGLE simulations. We find that the major pairs with pair separation $50$ kpc) in filaments are on average redder and low-star forming when compared to those embedded in sheets. The galaxies in filaments and sheets may have different stellar mass and cold gas mass distributions. Using a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, we find that for paired galaxies with pair separation $, 9 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

A key assumption of the standard cosmological model is that the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation scales with cosmological redshift $z$ as $T_{\rm CMB}(z) \propto (1+z)$ at all times after recombination at $z_\star \simeq 1090$. However, this assumption has only been precisely tested at $z \lesssim 3$. Here, we consider cosmological models with post-recombination reheating (PRR), in which the CMB monopole temperature abruptly increases due to energy injection after last scattering. Such a scenario can potentially resolve tensions between inferences of the current cosmic expansion rate (the Hubble constant, $H_0$). We consider an explicit model in which a metastable sub-component of dark matter (DM) decays to Standard Model photons, whose spectral energy distribution is assumed to be close to that of the CMB blackbody. A fit to Planck CMB anisotropy, COBE/FIRAS CMB monopole, and SH0ES distance-ladder measurements yields $H_0 = 71.2 \pm 1.1$ km/s/Mpc, matter fluctuation amplitude $S_8 = 0.774 \pm 0.018$, and CMB temperature increase $\delta T_{\rm CMB} = 0.109^{+0.033}_{-0.044}$ K, which is sourced by DM decay at $z \gtrsim 10$. However, matter density constraints from baryon acoustic oscillation and supernovae data highly constrain this scenario, with a joint fit to all datasets yielding $H_0 = 68.69 \pm 0.35$ km/s/Mpc, $S_8 = 0.8035 \pm 0.0081$, and $\delta T_{\rm CMB} < 0.0342$ K (95% CL upper limit). These bounds can be weakened if additional dark relativistic species are present in the early universe, yielding higher $H_0$. We conclude that current data disfavor models with significant PRR solely through its impact on background and linear-theory observables, completely independent of CMB spectral distortion constraints. When large overdensities gravitationally collapse in the early universe, they lead to primordial black holes (PBH). Depending on the exact model of inflation leading to necessary large perturbations at scales much smaller than scales probed at the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) surveys, PBHs of masses $\lesssim$$10^3 M_{\odot}$ can be formed sometime between the end of inflation and nucleosynthesis. However, the lack of a direct probe for the exact expansion history of the universe in this duration introduces uncertainties in the PBH formation process. The presence of alternate cosmological evolution for some duration after inflation affects the relation between (i) PBH mass and the scale of the collapsing overdensity; and (ii) PBH abundance and amplitude of the overdensities. In this review, the non-standard cosmological epochs relevant for a difference in PBH production are motivated and discussed. The importance of developing the framework of PBH formation in non-standard epochs is discussed from a phenomenological point of view, with particular emphasis on the advances in gravitational wave (GW) phenomenology, since abundant PBHs are always accompanied by large induced GWs. PBH formation in general non-standard epochs is also reviewed including the mathematical formalism. Specific examples, such as PBH formation in a kinetic energy dominated epoch and an early matter dominated epoch, are discussed with figures showing higher PBH abundances as compared to the production in standard radiation domination., Comment: Review for Galaxies (special issue), 48 pages, 7 figures

Context. It is well-established that shock waves in the intracluster medium launched by galaxy cluster mergers can produce synchrotron emission, which is visible to us at radio frequencies as radio relics. However, the particle acceleration mechanism producing these relics is still not fully understood. It is also unclear how relics relate to radio halos, which trace merger-induced turbulence in the intracluster medium. Aims. We aim to perform the first statistical analysis of radio relics in a mass-selected sample of galaxy clusters, using homogeneous observations. Methods. We analysed all relics observed by the Low Frequency Array Two Metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (LoTSS DR2) at 144 MHz, hosted by galaxy clusters in the second Planck catalogue of SZ sources (PSZ2). We measured and compared the relic properties in a uniform, unbiased way. In particular, we developed a method to describe the characteristic downstream width in a statistical manner. Additionally, we searched for differences between radio relic-hosting clusters with and without radio halos. Results. We find that, in our sample, $\sim$ 10% of galaxy clusters host at least one radio relic. We confirm previous findings, at higher frequencies, of a correlation between the relic-cluster centre distance and the longest linear size, as well as the radio relic power and cluster mass. However, our findings suggest that we are still missing a population of low-power relics. We also find that relics are wider than theoretically expected, even with optimistic downstream conditions. This Letter develops a method to constrain the Cosmological Constant $\Lambda$ from binary galaxies, focusing on the Milky Way and Andromeda. We provide an analytical solution to the two-body problem with $\Lambda$ and show that the ratio between the Keplerian period and $T_\Lambda = 2\pi/(c \sqrt{\Lambda}) \approx 63.2$ Gyr controls the importance of effects from the Cosmological Constant. The Andromeda-Milky Way orbit has a period of $\sim 20$ Gyr and so Dark Energy has to be taken into account. Using the current best mass estimates of the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies, we find the Cosmological Constant value based only on the Local Group dynamics to be lower then $5.44$ times the value obtained by Planck. With future astrometric measurements, the bound on the Cosmological Constant can be reduced to $\left(1.67 \pm 0.79\right) \Lambda_{\rm PL}$. Our results offer the prospects of constraints on $\Lambda$ over very different scales than previously. The Local Group provides also a completely novel platform to test alternative theories of gravity. Cosmological models and their parameters are widely debated, especially about whether the current discrepancy between the values of the Hubble constant, $H_{0}$, obtained by type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), and the Planck data from the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation could be alleviated when alternative cosmological models are considered. Thus, combining high-redshift probes, such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and Quasars (QSOs), together with Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and SNe Ia is important to assess the viability of these alternative models and if they can cast further light on the Hubble tension. In this work, for GRBs, we use a 3-dimensional relation between the peak prompt luminosity, the rest-frame time at the end of the X-ray plateau, and its corresponding luminosity in X-rays: the 3D Dainotti fundamental plane relation. Regarding QSOs, we use the Risaliti-Lusso relation among the UV and X-ray luminosities for a sample of 2421 sources. We correct both the QSO and GRB relations by accounting for selection and evolutionary effects with a reliable statistical method. We here use both the traditional Gaussian likelihoods ($\cal L_G$) and the new best-fit likelihoods ($\cal L_N$) to infer cosmological parameters of a non-flat $\Lambda$CDM and flat $w$CDM models. We obtain for all the parameters reduced uncertainties, up to $35\%$ for $H_{0}$, when applying the new $\cal L_N$ likelihoods in place of the Gaussian ones. Our results remain consistent with a flat $\Lambda$CDM model, although with a shift of the dark energy parameter $w$ toward $w, Comment: Accepted for publication at ApJ

Observations of elliptical galaxies suggest that black holes (BHs) might serve as dark energy candidates, coupled to the expansion of the Universe. According to this hypothesis, the mass of a BH could increase as the Universe expands. BH low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in the Galactic disk were born several gigayears ago, making the coupling effect potentially significant. In this work, we calculate the evolution of BH binaries with a binary population synthesis method to examine the possible influence of cosmologically-coupled growth of BHs, if it really exists. The measured masses of the compact objects in LMXBs show a gap around $\sim 2.5-5~{\rm M_\odot}$, separating the most massive neutron stars from the least massive BHs. Our calculated results indicate that, considering the mass growth seem to (partially) account for the mass gap and the formation of compact BH LMXBs, alleviating the challenges in modeling the formation and evolution of BH LMXBs with traditional theory. The nearby spiral galaxy NGC 3147 hosted three Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in the past decades, which have been subjects of intense follow-up observations. Simultaneous analysis of their data provides a unique opportunity for testing the different light curve fitting methods and distance estimations. The detailed optical follow-up of SN 2021hpr allows us to revise the previous distance estimations to NGC 3147, and compare the widely used light curve fitting algorithms to each other. After the combination of the available and newly published data of SN 2021hpr, its physical properties can be also estimated with higher accuracy. We present and analyse new BVgriz and Swift photometry of SN 2021hpr to constrain its general physical properties. Together with its siblings, SNe 1997bq and 2008fv, we cross-compare the individual distance estimates of these three SNe given by the SALT code, and also check their consistency with the results from the MLCS2k2 method. The early spectral series of SN 2021hpr are also fit with the radiative spectral code TARDIS in order to verify the explosion properties and constrain the chemical distribution of the outer ejecta. After combining the distance estimates for the three SNe, the mean distance to their host galaxy, NGC 3127, is 42.5 $\pm$ 1.0 Mpc, which matches with the distance inferred by the most up-to-date LC fitters, SALT3 and BayeSN. We confirm that SN~2021hpr is a Branch-normal Type Ia SN that ejected $\sim 1.12 \pm 0.28$ M$_\odot$ from its progenitor white dwarf, and synthesized $\sim 0.44 \pm 0.14$ M$_\odot$ of radioactive $^{56}$Ni., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, 11 tables; accepted for publication in A&A

The Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker model establishes the correlation between redshifts and distances. It has a metric expansion of space. As a result, the wavelength of photons propagating through the expanding space is stretched, creating the cosmological redshift, $z$. It also relates the frequency of light detected by a local observer to that emitted from a distant source. In standard cosmology (\textit{i.e.} a constant speed light model, $c =$ constant), this relation is given by a factor $1/(1+z)$ [1]. However, this ratio is modified in the minimally extended varying speed of light model (meVSL, $c = c_0 a^{b/4}$) as $1/(1+z)^{1-b/4}$ [2-4]. This time dilation effect can be observed as the observed rate of time variation in the intensity of emitted radiation. The spectra of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) provide a reliable way to measure the apparent aging rate of distant objects. We use data on 13 high-redshift ($0.28 \leq z \leq 0.62$) SNe Ia [5] to obtain $b = 0.198 \pm 0.415$ at the $1$-$\sigma$ confidence interval. Earth can act as a transducer to convert ultralight bosonic dark matter (axions and hidden photons) into an oscillating magnetic field with a characteristic pattern across its surface. Here we describe the first results of a dedicated experiment, the Search for Non-Interacting Particles Experimental Hunt (SNIPE Hunt), that aims to detect such dark-matter-induced magnetic-field patterns by performing correlated measurements with a network of magnetometers in relatively quiet magnetic environments (in the wilderness far from human-generated magnetic noise). Our experiment constrains parameter space describing hidden-photon and axion dark matter with Compton frequencies in the 0.5-5.0 Hz range. Limits on the kinetic-mixing parameter for hidden-photon dark matter represent the best experimental bounds to date in this frequency range.

In this paper, we would like to examine whether a novel Starobinsky-Bel-Robinson gravity model admits stable exponential inflationary solutions with or without spatial anisotropies. As a result, we are able to derive an exact de Sitter inflationary to this Starobinsky-Bel-Robinson model. Furthermore, we observe that an exact Bianchi type I inflationary solution does not exist in the Starobinsky-Bel-Robinson model. However, we find that a modified Starobinsky-Bel-Robinson model, in which the sign of coefficient of $R^2$ term is flipped from positive to negative, can admit the corresponding Bianchi type I inflationary solution. Unfortunately, stability analysis using the dynamical system approach indicates that both of these inflationary solutions turn out to be unstable. Interestingly, we show that a stable de Sitter inflationary solution can be obtained in the modified Starobinsky-Bel-Robinson gravity., Comment: 26 pages, 2 figures. Domain wall networks are two-dimensional topological defects generally predicted in many beyond standard model physics. In this Letter, we propose to solve the domain wall problem with the first-order phase transition. We numerically study the phase transition dynamics, and for the first time show that the domain walls reached scaling regime can be diluted through the interaction with vacuum bubbles during the first-order phase transition. We find that the amplitude of the gravitational waves produced by the second-stage first-order phase transition is several orders higher than that from the domain walls evolution in the scaling regime. We review the main aspects of geometrothermodynamics, a formalism that uses contact geometry and Riemannian geometry to describe the properties of thermodynamic systems. We show how to handle in a geometric way the invariance of classical thermodynamics with respect to Legendre transformations, which means that the properties of the systems do not depend on the choice of the thermodynamic potential. Moreover, we show that in geometrothermodynamics it is possible to apply a variational principle to generate thermodynamic fundamental equations, which can be used in the context of relativistic cosmology to generate cosmological models. As a particular example, we consider a fundamental equation that relates the entropy with the internal energy and the volume of the Universe, and construct cosmological models with arbitrary parameters, which can be fixed to reproduce the main aspects of the inflationary era and the standard cosmological paradigm., Comment: Invited review, 33 pages, 1 figure

Black holes with masses in excess of several billion solar masses have been found at redshifts 6-7.5, when the universe was less than 1 Gyr old. The existence of such supermassive black holes already in place at such early epochs has been challenging for theoretical models and distinguishing between different scenarios has prompted the search for their progenitors at earlier epochs. Here we present an extensive analysis of the JWST-NIRSpec spectrum (from the JADES survey) of GN-z11, an exceptionally luminous galaxy at z=10.6, revealing the detection of the high ionization [NeIV]$\lambda$2423 transition and semi-forbidden nebular lines tracing gas densities higher than $\rm 10^{10}~cm^{-3}$, typical of the Broad Line Region of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). These spectral features indicate that, in addition to star formation, GN-z11 also hosts an accreting black hole. We do not exclude a contribution from extreme stellar populations, however Wolf Rayet stars alone cannot account for many of the spectral properties. The spectrum also reveals a deep and blueshifted CIV$\lambda$1549 absorption trough, tracing an outflow with a velocity of $\sim 800-1000$ km/s, higher than typically observed in starburst galaxies, hence likely driven by the AGN. Assuming local virial scaling relations, we derive a black hole mass of $\rm \log{(M_{BH}/M_{\odot})}=6.2\pm 0.3$, accreting at about 5 times the Eddington rate. While super-Eddington accretion is probably episodic, if it has been occurring for the previous $\sim 100$ Myr, then the black hole could have potentially originated even from a stellar mass seed at z$\sim$12-15. We finally discuss that our finding naturally explains the high luminosity of GN-z11 and can also provide an explanation for its exceptionally high nitrogen abundance., Comment: 8 figures, submitted

It is shown that the required high quality of the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry can be a natural outcome of the multiple QCD axion models. In the axiverse, a hypothetical mass mixing between the QCD axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) can occur, which leads to an interesting phenomenon called the level crossing. In this paper, we investigate this mass mixing between one QCD axion and one ALP with the explicit PQ symmetry breaking in the early Universe. The dynamics of the axions and their cosmological evolutions when the level crossing occurs in this scenario are studied in detail. Then we focus our attention on the axion dark matter (DM) abundance. With several typical parameter sets for level crossing, we find that in the presence of the explicit PQ symmetry breaking term in the mixing, the total axion DM abundance is dominated by ALP and significantly suppressed., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

Cosmological observations precisely measure primordial variations in the density of the Universe at megaparsec and larger scales, but much smaller scales remain poorly constrained. However, sufficiently large initial perturbations at small scales can lead to an abundance of ultradense dark matter minihalos that form during the radiation epoch and survive into the late-time Universe. Because of their early formation, these objects can be compact enough to produce detectable microlensing signatures. We investigate whether the EROS, OGLE, and HSC surveys can probe these halos by fully accounting for finite source size and extended lens effects. We find that current data may already constrain the amplitudes of primordial curvature perturbations in a new region of parameter space, but this conclusion is strongly sensitive to yet undetermined details about the internal structures of these ultradense halos. Under optimistic assumptions, current and future HSC data would constrain a power spectrum that features an enhancement at scales $k \sim 10^7/{\rm Mpc}$, and an amplitude as low as $\mathcal{P}_\zeta\simeq 10^{-4}$ may be accessible. This is a particularly interesting regime because it connects to primordial black hole formation in a portion of the LIGO/Virgo/Kagra mass range and the production of scalar-induced gravitational waves in the nanohertz frequency range reachable by pulsar timing arrays. We investigate whether an accelerating universe can be realized as an asymptotic late-time solution of FLRW-cosmology with multi-field multi-exponential potentials. Late-time cosmological solutions exhibit a universal behavior which enables us to bound the rate of time variation of the Hubble parameter. In string-theoretic realizations, if the dilaton remains a rolling field, our bound singles out a tension in achieving asymptotic late-time cosmic acceleration. Our findings go beyond previous no-go theorems in that they apply to arbitrary multi-exponential potentials and make no specific reference to vacuum or slow-roll solutions. We also show that if the late-time solution approaches a critical point of the dynamical system governing the cosmological evolution, the criterion for cosmic acceleration can be generally stated in terms of a directional derivative of the potential., Comment: 6 pages + appendix

We present the largest low frequency (120~MHz) arcminute resolution image of the radio synchrotron background (RSB) to date, and its corresponding angular power spectrum of anisotropies (APS) with angular scales ranging from $3^\circ$ to $0.3^\prime$. We show that the RSB around the North Celestial Pole has a significant excess anisotropy power at all scales over a model of unclustered point sources based on source counts of known source classes. This anisotropy excess, which does not seem attributable to the diffuse Galactic emission, could be linked to the surface brightness excess of the RSB. To better understand the information contained within the measured APS, we model the RSB varying the brightness distribution, size, and angular clustering of potential sources. We show that the observed APS could be produced by a population of faint clustered point sources only if the clustering is extreme and the size of the Gaussian clusters is $\lesssim 1'$. We also show that the observed APS could be produced by a population of faint diffuse sources with sizes $\lesssim 1'$, and this is supported by features present in our image. Both of these cases would also cause an associated surface brightness excess. We present an in-depth analysis of a newly proposed correlation function in visibility space, between the E and B modes of the linear polarization, hereafter the EB-correlation, for a set of time-averaged GRMHD simulations compared with the phase map from different semi-analytic models as well as the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) 2017 data for M87* source. We demonstrate that the phase map of the time-averaged EB-correlation contains novel information that might be linked to the BH spin, accretion state and the electron temperature. A detailed comparison with a semi-analytic approach with different azimuthal expansion modes shows that to recover the morphology of the real/imaginary part of the correlation function and its phase, we require higher orders of these azimuthal modes. To extract the phase features, we propose to use the Zernike polynomial reconstruction developing an empirical metric to break degeneracies between models with different BH spins that are qualitatively similar. We use a set of different geometrical ring models with various magnetic and velocity field morphologies and show that both the image space and visibility based EB-correlation morphologies in MAD simulations can be explained with simple fluid and magnetic field geometries as used in ring models. SANEs by contrast are harder to model, demonstrating that the simple fluid and magnetic field geometries of ring models are not sufficient to describe them owing to higher Faraday Rotation depths. A qualitative comparison with the EHT data demonstrates that some of the features in the phase of EB-correlation might be well explained by the current models for BH spins as well as electron temperatures, while others may require a larger theoretical surveys., Comment: 26 pages, 21 Figures

The analysis of photometric large-scale structure data is often complicated by the need to account for many observational and astrophysical systematics. The elaborate models needed to describe them often introduce many ``nuisance parameters'', which can be a major inhibitor of an efficient parameter inference. In this paper we introduce an approximate method to analytically marginalise over a large number of nuisance parameters based on the Laplace approximation. We discuss the mathematics of the method, its relation to concepts such as volume effects and profile likelihood, and show that it can be further simplified for calibratable systematics by linearising the dependence of the theory on the associated parameters. We quantify the accuracy of this approach by comparing it with traditional sampling methods in the context of existing data from the Dark Energy Survey, as well as futuristic Stage-IV photometric data. The linearised version of the method is able to obtain parameter constraints that are virtually equivalent to those found by exploring the full parameter space for a large number of calibratable nuisance parameters, while reducing the computation time by a factor 3-10. Furthermore, the non-linearised approach is able to analytically marginalise over a large number of parameters, returning constraints that are virtually indistinguishable from the brute-force method in most cases, accurately reproducing both the marginalised uncertainty on cosmological parameters, and the impact of volume effects associated with this marginalisation. We provide simple recipes to diagnose when the approximations made by the method fail and one should thus resort to traditional methods. The gains in sampling efficiency associated with this method enable the joint analysis of multiple surveys, typically hindered by the large number of nuisance parameters needed to describe them., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

We present, for the first time, an observational test of the consistency relation for the large-scale structure (LSS) of the Universe through a joint analysis of the anisotropic two- and three-point correlation functions (2PCF and 3PCF) of galaxies. We parameterise the breakdown of the LSS consistency relation in the squeezed limit by $E_{\rm s}$, which represents the ratio of the coefficients of the shift terms in the second-order density and velocity fluctuations. $E_{\rm s}\neq1$ is a sufficient condition under which the LSS consistency relation is violated. A novel aspect of this work is that we constrain $E_{\rm s}$ by obtaining information about the nonlinear velocity field from the quadrupole component of the 3PCF without taking the squeezed limit. Using the galaxy catalogues in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Data Release 12, we obtain $E_{\rm s} = -0.92_{-3.26}^{+3.13}$, indicating that there is no violation of the LSS consistency relation in our analysis within the statistical errors. Our parameterisation is general enough that our constraint can be applied to a wide range of theories, such as multicomponent fluids, modified gravity theories, and their associated galaxy bias effects. We entertain the novel possibility that long range forces may lead to violations of accidental symmetries, in particular baryon number. Employing an ultralight scalar, with a mass $\ll$ eV, we illustrate that this scenario can lead to vastly disparate nucleon lifetimes, in different astronomical objects. Such a long range interaction can yield a number of potentially observable effects, such as a flux of neutrinos at $\gtrsim 10$ MeV from the Sun and heating of old neutron stars. We examine the prospects for constraining this scenario, with current and future astrophysical data, and find that neutron star heating provides the strongest present and near term bounds. Simple extensions of our setup allow for the ultralight scalar to constitute the dark matter of the Universe. The first population of X-ray binaries (XRBs) is expected to affect the thermal and ionization states of the gas in the early Universe. Although these X-ray sources are predicted to have important implications for high-redshift observable signals, such as the hydrogen 21-cm signal from cosmic dawn and the cosmic X-ray background, their properties are poorly explored, leaving theoretical models largely uninformed. In this paper we model a population of X-ray binaries arising from zero metallicity stars. We explore how their properties depend on the adopted initial mass function (IMF) of primordial stars, finding a strong effect on their number and X-ray production efficiency. We also present scaling relations between XRBs and their X-ray emission with the local star formation rate, which can be used in sub-grid models in numerical simulations to improve the X-ray feedback prescriptions. Specifically, we find that the uniformity and strength of the X-ray feedback in the intergalactic medium is strongly dependant on the IMF. Bottom-heavy IMFs result in a smoother distribution of XRBs, but have a luminosity orders of magnitude lower than more top-heavy IMFs. Top-heavy IMFs lead to more spatially uneven, albeit strong, X-ray emission. An intermediate IMF has a strong X-ray feedback while sustaining an even emission across the intergalactic medium. These differences in X-ray feedback could be probed in the future with measurements of the cosmic dawn 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen, which offers us a new way of constraining population III IMF., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 17 pages, 9 figures

The integrated shear 3-point correlation function $\zeta_{\pm}$ measures the correlation between the local shear 2-point function $\xi_{\pm}$ and the 1-point shear aperture mass in patches of the sky. Unlike other higher-order statistics, $\zeta_{\pm}$ can be efficiently measured from cosmic shear data, and it admits accurate theory predictions on a wide range of scales as a function of cosmological and baryonic feedback parameters. Here, we develop and test a likelihood analysis pipeline for cosmological constraints using $\zeta_{\pm}$. We incorporate treatment of systematic effects from photometric redshift uncertainties, shear calibration bias and galaxy intrinsic alignments. We also develop an accurate neural-network emulator for fast theory predictions in MCMC parameter inference analyses. We test our pipeline using realistic cosmic shear maps based on $N$-body simulations with a DES Y3-like footprint, mask and source tomographic bins, finding unbiased parameter constraints. Relative to $\xi_{\pm}$-only, adding $\zeta_{\pm}$ can lead to $\approx 10-25\%$ improvements on the constraints of parameters like $A_s$ (or $\sigma_8$) and $w_0$. We find no evidence in $\xi_{\pm} + \zeta_{\pm}$ constraints of a significant mitigation of the impact of systematics. We also investigate the impact of the size of the apertures where $\zeta_{\pm}$ is measured, and of the strategy to estimate the covariance matrix ($N$-body vs. lognormal). Our analysis solidifies the strong potential of the $\zeta_{\pm}$ statistic and puts forward a pipeline that can be readily used to improve cosmological constraints using real cosmic shear data., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. The first generation of stars, often called Population III (or Pop III), form from metal-free primordial gas at redshifts 30 and below. They dominate the cosmic star formation history until redshifts 15 to 20, at which point the formation of metal-enriched Pop II stars takes over. We review current theoretical models for the formation, properties and impact of Pop III stars, and discuss existing and future observational constraints. Key takeaways from this review include the following: (1) Primordial gas is highly susceptible to fragmentation and Pop III stars form as members of small clusters with a logarithmically flat mass function. (2) Feedback from massive Pop III stars plays a central role in regulating subsequent star formation, but major uncertainties remain regarding its immediate impact. (3) In extreme conditions, supermassive Pop III stars can form, reaching masses of several 10^5 Msun. Their remnants may be the seeds of the supermassive black holes observed in high-redshift quasars. (4) Direct observations of Pop III stars in the early Universe remain extremely challenging. Indirect constraints from the global 21cm signal or gravitational waves are more promising. (5) Stellar archeological surveys allow us to constrain both the low-mass and the high-mass ends of the Pop III mass distribution. We present new strong-lensing (SL) mass reconstruction of the six Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) clusters with the MAximum-entropy ReconStruction (${\tt MARS}$) algorithm. ${\tt MARS}$ is a new free-form inversion method, which suppresses spurious small-scale fluctuations while achieving excellent convergence in positions of multiple images. For each HFF cluster, we obtain a model-independent mass distribution from the compilation of the self-consistent SL data in the literature. With $100-200$ multiple images per cluster, we reconstruct solutions with small scatters of multiple images in both source (~0".02) and image planes (~0."05-0.''1), which are lower than the previous results by a factor of 5-10. An outstanding case is the MACS J0416.1-2403 mass reconstruction, which is based on the largest high-quality SL dataset where all 236 multiple images/knots have spectroscopic redshifts. Although our solution is smooth on a large scale, it reveals group/galaxy-scale peaks where the substructures are required by the data. We find that in general, these mass peaks are in excellent spatial agreement with the member galaxies, although ${\tt MARS}$ never uses the galaxy distributions as priors. Our study corroborates the flexibility and accuracy of the ${\tt MARS}$ algorithm and demonstrates that ${\tt MARS}$ is a powerful tool in the JWST era, when $2-3$ times larger number of multiple image candidates become available for SL mass reconstruction, and self-consistency within the dataset becomes a critical issue., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables, submitted to ApJ

The anisotropies of the Cosmological Gravitational Wave Background (CGWB) retain information about the primordial mechanisms that source the gravitational waves and about the geometry and the particle content of the universe at early times. In this work, we discuss in detail the computation of the angular power spectra of CGWB anisotropies and of their cross correlation with Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies, assuming different processes for the generation of these primordial signals. We present an efficient implementation of our results in a modified version of CLASS which will be publicly available. By combining our new code GW_CLASS with MontePython, we forecast the combined sensitivity of future gravitational wave interferometers and CMB experiments to the cosmological parameters that characterize the cosmological gravitational wave background., Comment: 63 pages, 16 figures
