A coupled dark energy model is considered, in which dark energy is represented by a generalized three-form field and dark matter by dust. By assuming the functions $N$ and $I$ in the model's Lagrangian as two power-law functions of the three-form field, we obtain two fixed points of the autonomous system of evolution equations, consisting of a attractor and a tracking saddle point which can be used to alleviate the coincidence problem. After marginalizing the present three-form field $\kappa X_{0}$ which is unable to be strictly restricted, we confront the model with the latest Type Ia Supernova (SN \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral1}a), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Cosmic Microwave Backround (CMB) radiation observations with the fitting results $\Omega_{m0}= 0.280_{-0.048}^{+0.048}$ and $\lambda=0.011_{-0.032}^{+0.032}$ in the $2\sigma$ confidence level, we also find that the best fitting effective dark energy equation of state (EOS) crosses $ -1$ at redshift around 0.2., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables, accepted by Physics of the Dark Universe(Volume 27, January 2020, 100462). arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1704.05772

We use different combinations of data samples to investigate the new generalized Chaplygin gas (NGCG) model in the context of dark energy (DE) cosmology. Using the available cosmological data, we put constraints on the the free parameters of NGCG model based on the statistical Markov chain Monte Carlo method. We then find the best fit values of cosmological parameters and those confidence regions in NGCG cosmology. Our result for the matter density parameter calculated in NGCG model is in excellent agreement with that of the standard CDM cosmology. We also find that the equation of state of DE of the model slightly favors the phantom regime. We show that the big tension between the low- and high-redshift observations appearing in CDM universe to predict the Hubble constant H 0 can be alleviated in NGCG model. Two exact lens equations have been recently shown to be equivalent to each other, being consistent with the gravitational deflection angle of light from a source to an observer, both of which can be within a finite distance from a lens object [Phys. Rev. D 102, 064060 (2020)]. We examine methods for iterative solutions of the gravitational lens equations in the strong deflection limit. It has been so far unclear whether a convergent series expansion can be provided by the gravitational lens approach based on the geometrical optics for obtaining approximate solutions in the strong deflection limit in terms of a small offset angle. By using the ratio of the lens mass to the lens distance, we discuss a slightly different method for iterative solutions and the behavior of the convergence. Finite distance effects begin at the third order in the iterative method. The iterative solutions in the strong deflection limit are estimated for Sgr $A^{*}$ and M87. These results suggest that only the linear order solution can be relevant with current observations, while the finite distance effects at the third order may be negligible in the Schwarzschild lens model for these astronomical objects., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, correcting a numerical value and a sentence in the introduction section, PRD in press

Galaxy clusters identified from the Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) effect are a key ingredient in multi-wavelength cluster-based cosmology. We present a comparison between two methods of cluster identification: the standard Matched Filter (MF) method in SZ cluster finding and a method using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). We further implement and show results for a `combined' identifier. We apply the methods to simulated millimeter maps for several observing frequencies for an SPT-3G-like survey. There are some key differences between the methods. The MF method requires image pre-processing to remove point sources and a model for the noise, while the CNN method requires very little pre-processing of images. Additionally, the CNN requires tuning of hyperparameters in the model and takes as input, cutout images of the sky. Specifically, we use the CNN to classify whether or not an 8 arcmin $\times$ 8 arcmin cutout of the sky contains a cluster. We compare differences in purity and completeness. The MF signal-to-noise ratio depends on both mass and redshift. Our CNN, trained for a given mass threshold, captures a different set of clusters than the MF, some of which have SNR below the MF detection threshold. However, the CNN tends to mis-classify cutouts whose clusters are located near the edge of the cutout, which can be mitigated with staggered cutouts. We leverage the complementarity of the two methods, combining the scores from each method for identification. The purity and completeness of the MF alone are both 0.61, assuming a standard detection threshold. The purity and completeness of the CNN alone are 0.59 and 0.61. The combined classification method yields 0.60 and 0.77, a significant increase for completeness with a modest decrease in purity. We advocate for combined methods that increase the confidence of many lower signal-to-noise clusters.

Observations in the lowest MWA band between $75-100$ MHz have the potential to constrain the distribution of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium at redshift $\sim 13-17$. Using 15 hours of MWA data, we analyse systematics in this band such as radio-frequency interference (RFI), ionospheric and wide field effects. By updating the position of point sources, we mitigate the direction independent calibration error due to ionospheric offsets. Our calibration strategy is optimized for the lowest frequency bands by reducing the number of direction dependent calibrators and taking into account radio sources within a wider field of view. We remove data polluted by systematics based on the RFI occupancy and ionospheric conditions, finally selecting 5.5 hours of the cleanest data. Using these data, we obtain two sigma upper limits on the 21 cm power spectrum in the range of $0.1\lessapprox k \lessapprox 1 ~\rm ~h~Mpc^{-1}$ and at $z$=14.2, 15.2 and 16.5, with the lowest limit being $6.3\times 10^6 ~\rm mK^2$ at $\rm k=0.14 \rm ~h~Mpc^{-1}$ and at $z=15.2$ with a possibility of a few \% of signal loss due to direction independent calibration., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures, accepted to MNRAS

In this paper, the merger rate of black holes in a cluster of primordial black holes (PBHs) is investigated. The clusters have characteristics close to those of typical globular star clusters. A cluster that has a wide mass spectrum ranging from 10−2 to 10M⊙ (Solar mass) and contains a massive central black hole of the mass M•=103M⊙ is considered. It is shown that in the process of the evolution of cluster, the merger rate changed significantly, and by now, the PBH clusters have passed the stage of active merging of the black holes inside them.

T. N. Varga et al., We develop a novel data-driven method for generating synthetic optical observations of galaxy clusters. In cluster weak lensing, the interplay between analysis choices and systematic effects related to source galaxy selection, shape measurement, and photometric redshift estimation can be best characterized in end-to-end tests going from mock observations to recovered cluster masses. To create such test scenarios, we measure and model the photometric properties of galaxy clusters and their sky environments from the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) data in two bins of cluster richness λ∈[30;45) ⁠, λ∈[45;60) and three bins in cluster redshift (⁠z∈[0.3;0.35) ⁠, z∈[0.45;0.5) and z∈[0.6;0.65) ⁠. Using deep-field imaging data, we extrapolate galaxy populations beyond the limiting magnitude of DES Y3 and calculate the properties of cluster member galaxies via statistical background subtraction. We construct mock galaxy clusters as random draws from a distribution function, and render mock clusters and line-of-sight catalogues into synthetic images in the same format as actual survey observations. Synthetic galaxy clusters are generated from real observational data, and thus are independent from the assumptions inherent to cosmological simulations. The recipe can be straightforwardly modified to incorporate extra information, and correct for survey incompleteness. We present a multi-band analysis of the six Hubble Frontier Field clusters and their parallel fields, producing catalogs with measurements of source photometry and photometric redshifts. We release these catalogs to the public along with maps of intracluster light and models for the brightest galaxies in each field. This rich data set covers a wavelength range from 0.2 to 8 $\mu m$, utilizing data from the Hubble Space Telescope, Keck Observatories, Very Large Telescope array, and Spitzer Space Telescope. We validate our products by injecting into our fields and recovering a population of synthetic objects with similar characteristics as in real extragalactic surveys. The photometric catalogs contain a total of over 32,000 entries with 50\% completeness at a threshold of $\mathrm{mag_{AB}}\sim 29.1$ for unblended sources, and $\mathrm{mag_{AB}}\sim 29$ for blended ones, in the IR-Weighted detection band. Photometric redshifts were obtained by means of template fitting and have an average outlier fraction of 10.3\% and scatter $\sigma = 0.067$ when compared to spectroscopic estimates. Being generated, the relic neutrino background contained equal fractions of electron $\nu_e$, muon $\nu_\mu$, and taon $\nu_\tau$ neutrinos. We show that the gravitational field of our Galaxy and other nearby cosmic objects changes this composition near the Solar System, enriching it with the heaviest neutrino $nu_3$. This mass state is almost free of the electron component (only $\sim 2\%$ of $\nu_e$) and contains more muon component than the tau one. As a result, the relic background becomes enriched with taon and particularly muon neutrinos. In addition to the well-known gas phase mass-metallicity relation (MZR), recent spatially-resolved observations have shown that local galaxies also obey a mass-metallicity gradient relation (MZGR) whereby metallicity gradients can vary systematically with galaxy mass. In this work, we use our recently-developed analytic model for metallicity distributions in galactic discs, which includes a wide range of physical processes -- radial advection, metal diffusion, cosmological accretion, and metal-enriched outflows -- to simultaneously analyse the MZR and MZGR. We show that the same physical principles govern the shape of both: centrally-peaked metal production favours steeper gradients, and this steepening is diluted by the addition of metal-poor gas, which is supplied by inward advection for low-mass galaxies and by cosmological accretion for massive galaxies. The MZR and the MZGR both bend at galaxy stellar mass $\sim 10^{10} - 10^{10.5}\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$, and we show that this feature corresponds to the transition of galaxies from the advection-dominated to the accretion-dominated regime. We also find that both the MZR and MZGR strongly suggest that low-mass galaxies preferentially lose metals entrained in their galactic winds. While this metal-enrichment of the galactic outflows is crucial for reproducing both the MZR and the MZGR at the low-mass end, we show that the flattening of gradients in massive galaxies is expected regardless of the nature of their winds., Comment: 3 figures, 1 appendix, 12 pages. Understanding the impact of environment on the formation and evolution of dark matter halos and galaxies is a crucial open problem. Studying statistical correlations in large simulated populations sheds some light on these impacts, but the causal effect of an environment on individual objects is harder to pinpoint. Addressing this, we present a new method for resimulating a single dark matter halo in multiple large-scale environments. In the initial conditions, we 'splice' (i.e. insert) the Lagrangian region of a halo into different Gaussian random fields, while enforcing consistency with the statistical properties of $\Lambda$CDM. Applying this technique, we demonstrate that the mass of halos is primarily determined by the density structure inside their Lagrangian patches, while the halos' concentration is more strongly affected by environment. Many galaxy clusters host Mpc scale diffuse radio sources called radio halos. Their origin is connected to the processes that lead to the formation of clusters themselves. In order to unveil this connection, statistical studies of radio halos are necessary. We selected a sample of galaxy clusters with M500>6e14Msun and z=0.08-0.33 from the Planck SZ catalogue. In paper I, we presented the radio and X-ray data analysis that we carried out on these clusters. Here, we study the radio properties of the sample, in connection to the mass and dynamical state of clusters. We used the dynamical information derived from the X-ray data to assess the role of mergers in the origin of radio halos. We studied the distribution of clusters in the radio power-mass diagram and the role of dynamics on the radio luminosity and emissivity of radio halos. We measured the occurrence of radio halos as a function of the cluster mass and we compared it with the expectations of turbulent acceleration models. We found that more than the 90% of radio halos are in merging clusters and that their radio power correlates with the mass of the host clusters. The correlation shows a large dispersion. Interestingly, we showed that cluster dynamics contributes significantly to this dispersion with more disturbed clusters being more radio luminous. Clusters without radio halos are generally relaxed and the upper limits to their diffuse emission lie below the correlation. We showed that the radio emissivity of clusters exhibits an apparent bimodality, with the emissivity of radio halos being at least 5 times larger than the non-emission associated with more relaxed clusters. We found that the fraction of radio halos drops from ~70% in high mass clusters to ~35% in the lower mass systems of the sample and we showed that this result is in good agreement with the expectations from turbulent re-acceleration models., 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We investigate the ringdown waveform and reflectivity of a Lifshitz scalar field around a fixed Schwarzschild black hole. The radial wave equation is modified due to the Lorentz breaking terms, which leads to a diversity of ringdown waveforms. Also, it turns out that Lifshitz waves scattered by the Schwarzschild black hole exhibits superradiance. The Lorentz breaking terms lead to superluminal propagation and high-frequency modes can enter and leave the interior of the Killing horizon where negativity of energy is not prohibited. This allows the Lifshitz waves to carry out additional positive energy to infinity while leaving negative energy inside the Killing horizon, similar to the Penrose process in the ergosphere of a Kerr spacetime. Another interesting phenomenon is emergence of long-lived quasinormal modes, associated with roton-type dispersion relations. These effects drastically modify the greybody factor of a microscopic black hole, whose Hawking temperature is comparable with or higher than the Lifshitz energy scale., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

The eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS), covering ~140 square degrees, was performed as part of the performance verification phase of the eROSITA telescope on board of the Russian-German satellite Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG). In this paper we present the optical follow-up of 542 X-ray extent selected galaxy group and cluster candidates providing redshifts and cluster confirmation for the full sample. We use optical imaging data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program and from the Legacy Survey to run the cluster redshift and confirmation tool MCMF as well as the optical cluster finder CAMIRA at the location of the X-ray candidates. While providing redshift estimates for all 542 candidates, we construct an optically confirmed sample of 477 clusters and groups with a residual contamination of 6%. Of these, 470 (98.5%) are confirmed using MCMF and 7 systems are added through cross matching with spectroscopic group catalogs. Using observable to observable scaling and the applied confirmation threshold, we predict 8 +/- 2 real systems have been excluded with the MCMF cut required to build this low contamination sample. This number is in good agreement with the 7 systems recovered through cross matching. Thus, we expect those 477 systems to include >99% of all true clusters in the candidate list. Using an MCMF independent method, we confirm the catalog contamination of the confirmed subsample to be 6 +/- 3% and find 17 +/- 3% contamination for the full X-ray sample. The estimated contamination of the fulls sample is in agreement with MCMF dependent estimate of ~17% and the expectation from dedicated X-ray simulations of ~20%. A range of cosmological observations demonstrate an accelerated expansion of the Universe, and the most likely explanation of this phenomenon is a cosmological constant. Given the importance of understanding the underlying physics, it is relevant to investigate alternative models. This article uses numerical simulations to test the consistency of one such alternative model. Specifically, this model has no cosmological constant, instead the dark matter particles have an extra force proportional to velocity squared, somewhat reminiscent of the magnetic force in electrodynamics. The constant strength of the force is the only free parameter. Since bottom-up structure formation creates cosmological structures whose internal velocity dispersions increase in time, this model may mimic the temporal evolution of the effect from a cosmological constant. It is shown that models with force linearly proportional to internal velocites, or models proportional to velocity to power three or more cannot mimic the accelerated expansion induced by a cosmological constant. We discuss the most general field equations for cosmological spacetimes for theories of gravity based on non-linear extensions of the non-metricity scalar and the torsion scalar. Our approach is based on a systematic symmetry-reduction of the metric-affine geometry which underlies these theories. While for the simplest conceivable case the connection disappears from the field equations and one obtains the Friedmann equations of General Relativity, we show that in $f(\mathbb{Q})$ cosmology the connection generically modifies the metric field equations and that some of the connection components become dynamical. We show that $f(\mathbb{Q})$ cosmology contains the exact General Relativity solutions and also exact solutions which go beyond. Dark matter halos represent the highest density peaks in the matter distribution. Conversely, cosmic voids are under-dense patches of the universe. Probing the mass distribution of the universe requires various approaches, including weak gravitational lensing that subtly modifies the shape of distant sources, and Doppler lensing that changes the apparent size and magnitude of objects due to peculiar velocities. In this work, we adopt both gravitational and Doppler lensing effects to study the underlying matter distribution in and around cosmic voids/halos. We use the relativistic $N$-body code \texttt{gevolution}, to generate the mass perturbations and develop a new ray-tracing code that relies on the design of the ray bundle method. We consider three categories of halo masses and void radii, and extract the cosmological information by stacking weak-lensing and Doppler lensing signals around voids/halos. The results of this paper show that the most optimal strategy that combines both gravitational and Doppler lensing effects to map the mass distribution should focus on the redshift range $z\approx 0.3-0.4$. The recommendation of this paper is that future spectroscopic surveys should focus on these redshifts and utilise the gravitational and Doppler lensing techniques to extract information about underlying matter distribution across the cosmic web, especially inside cosmic voids. We present GLEAM (Galaxy Line Emission & Absorption Modeling), a Python tool for fitting Gaussian models to emission and absorption lines in large samples of 1D extragalactic spectra. GLEAM is tailored to work well in batch mode without much human interaction. With GLEAM, users can uniformly process a variety of spectra, including galaxies and active galactic nuclei, in a wide range of instrument setups and signal-to-noise regimes. GLEAM also takes advantage of multiprocessing capabilities to process spectra in parallel. With the goal of enabling reproducible workflows for its users, GLEAM employs a small number of input files, including a central, user-friendly configuration in which fitting constraints can be defined for groups of spectra and overrides can be specified for edge cases. For each spectrum, GLEAM produces a table containing measurements and error bars for the detected spectral lines and continuum, and upper limits for non-detections. For visual inspection and publishing, GLEAM can also produce plots of the data with fitted lines overlaid. In the present paper, we describe GLEAM's main features, the necessary inputs, expected outputs, and some example applications, including thorough tests on a large sample of optical/infra-red multi-object spectroscopic observations and integral field spectroscopic data. gleam is developed as an open-source project hosted at https://github.com/multiwavelength/gleam and welcomes community contributions., Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal. The redshifted 21cm radio signal has emerged as an important probe for investigating the dynamics of the dark age Universe (recombination to reionization). In the current analysis, we explore the combined effect of primordial black hole (PBH) evaporation and the baryon-dark matter (DM) interaction in the 21cm scenario. The variation of brightness temperature shows remarkable dependence on the DM masses ($m_{\chi}$) and the baryon-DM cross-sections ($\overline{\sigma}_0$) besides the influences of the PBH parameters (mass $\mathcal{M_{\rm BH}}$ and initial mass fraction $\beta_{\rm BH}$). We address both upper and lower bounds on $\beta_{\rm BH}$ for a wide range of PBH mass in presence of different $m_{\chi}$ and $\overline{\sigma}_0$ by incorporating the observational excess $\left(-500^{+200}_{-500}\: {\rm mK}\right)$ of EDGES's experimental results. Finally, we address similar limits in the $m_{\chi}$ - $\overline{\sigma}_0$ parameter plane for different PBH masses., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

We perform a general test of the $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ and $w {\rm CDM}$ cosmological models by comparing constraints on the geometry of the expansion history to those on the growth of structure. Specifically, we split the total matter energy density, $\Omega_M$, and (for $w {\rm CDM}$) dark energy equation of state, $w$, into two parameters each: one that captures the geometry, and another that captures the growth. We constrain our split models using current cosmological data, including type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, gravitational lensing, and cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. We focus on two tasks: (i) constraining deviations from the standard model, captured by the parameters $\Delta\Omega_M \equiv \Omega_M^{\rm grow}-\Omega_M^{\rm geom}$ and $\Delta w \equiv w^{\rm grow}-w^{\rm geom}$, and (ii) investigating whether the $S_8$ tension between the CMB and weak lensing can be translated into a tension between geometry and growth, i.e. $\Delta\Omega_M \neq 0$, $\Delta w \neq 0$. In both the split $\Lambda{\rm CDM}$ and $w {\rm CDM}$ cases, our results from combining all data are consistent with $\Delta\Omega_M = 0$ and $\Delta w = 0$. If we omit BAO/RSD data and constrain the split $w {\rm CDM}$ cosmology, we find the data prefers $\Delta w0$ at $4.2\sigma$ evidence. We also find that for both CMB and weak lensing, $\Delta\Omega_M$ and $S_8$ are correlated, with CMB showing a slightly stronger correlation. The general broadening of the contours in our extended model does alleviate the $S_8$ tension, but the allowed nonzero values of $\Delta\Omega_M$ do not encompass the $S_8$ values that would point toward a mismatch between geometry and growth as the origin of the tension., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures. Using ultra-deep imaging ($\mu_g = 30.4$ mag/arcsec$^2$; 3$\sigma$, 10"x10"), we probed the surroundings of the first galaxy "lacking" dark matter KKS2000[04] (NGC 1052-DF2). Signs of tidal stripping in this galaxy would explain its claimed low content of dark matter. However, we find no evidence of tidal tails. In fact, the galaxy remains undisturbed down to a radial distance of 80 arcsec. This radial distance triples previous spatial explorations of the stellar distribution of this galaxy. In addition, the distribution of its globular clusters (GCs) is not extended in relation to the bulk of the galaxy (the radius containing half of the GCs is 21 arcsec). We also found that the surface brightness radial profiles of this galaxy in the g and r bands decline exponentially from 35 to 80 arcsec. That, together with a constant ellipticity and position angle in the outer parts of the galaxy strongly suggests the presence of a low-inclination disk. This is consistent with the evidence of rotation found for this object. This finding implies that the dynamical mass of this galaxy is a factor of 2 higher than previously reported, bringing the dark matter content of this galaxy in line with galaxies of similar stellar mass., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. We present a measurement of the Hubble constant $H_0$ from surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) distances for 63 bright, mainly early-type galaxies out to 100 Mpc observed with the Wide Field Camera 3 Infrared Channel (WFC3/IR) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The sample is drawn from several independent HST imaging programs using the F110W bandpass of WFC3/IR. The majority of galaxies are in the 50 to 80 Mpc range and come from the MASSIVE galaxy survey. The median statistical uncertainty on individual distance measurements is 4%. We construct the Hubble diagram with these IR SBF distances and constrain $H_0$ using {four} different treatments of the galaxy velocities. For the SBF zero point calibration, we use both the existing tie to Cepheid variables, updated for consistency with the latest determination of the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud from detached eclipsing binaries, and a new tie to the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) calibrated from the maser distance to NGC4258. These two SBF calibrations are consistent with each other and with theoretical predictions from stellar population models. From a weighted average of the Cepheid and TRGB calibrations, we derive $H_0=73.3{\,\pm\,}0.7{\,\pm\,}2.4$ km/s/Mpc, where the error bars reflect the statistical and systematic uncertainties. This result accords well with recent measurements of $H_0$ from Type~Ia supernovae, time delays in multiply lensed quasars, and water masers. In this paper, we systematically study gravitational waves (GWs) produced by remote compact astrophysical sources. To describe such GWs properly, we introduce three scales, $\lambda, \; L_c$ and $L$, denoting, respectively, the typical wavelength of GWs, the scale of the cosmological perturbations, and the size of the observable universe. For GWs to be detected by the current and foreseeable detectors, the condition $\lambda \ll L_c \ll L$ holds, and such GWs can be well approximated as high-frequency GWs. In order for the backreaction of the GWs to the background to be negligible, we must assume that $\left|h_{\mu\nu}\right| \ll 1$, in addition to the condition $\epsilon \ll 1$, which are also the conditions for the linearized Einstein field equations for $h_{\mu\nu}$ to be valid, where $g_{\mu\nu} = \gamma_{\mu\nu} + \epsilon h_{\mu\nu}$, and $\gamma_{\mu\nu}$ denotes the background. To simplify the field equations, we show that the spatial, traceless, and Lorentz gauge conditions can be imposed simultaneously, even when the background is not vacuum, as long as the high-frequency GW approximation is valid. However, to develop the formulas that can be applicable to as many cases as possible, we first write down explicitly the linearized Einstein field equations by imposing only the spatial gauge. Applying the general formulas together with the geometrical optics approximation to such GWs, we find that they still move along null geodesics and its polarization bi-vector is parallel-transported, even when both the cosmological scalar and tensor perturbations are present. In addition, we also calculate the gravitational integrated Sachs-Wolfe effects, whereby the dependences of the amplitude, phase and luminosity distance of the GWs on these two kinds of perturbations are read out explicitly., Comment: revtex4, one figure, no tables. Matched filters are routinely used in cosmology in order to detect galaxy clusters from mm observations through their thermal Sunyaev–Zeldovich (tSZ) signature. In addition, they naturally provide an observable, the detection signal-to-noise or significance, which can be used as a mass proxy in number counts analyses of tSZ-selected cluster samples. In this work, we show that this observable is, in general, non-Gaussian, and that it suffers from a positive bias, which we refer to as optimization bias. Both aspects arise from the fact that the signal-to-noise is constructed through an optimization operation on noisy data, and hold even if the cluster signal is modelled perfectly well, no foregrounds are present, and the noise is Gaussian. After reviewing the general mathematical formalism underlying matched filters, we study the statistics of the signal-to-noise with a set Monte Carlo mock observations, finding it to be well-described by a unit-variance Gaussian for signal-to-noise values of 6 and above, and quantify the magnitude of the optimization bias, for which we give an approximate expression that may be used in practice. We also consider the impact of the bias on the cluster number counts of Planck and the Simons Observatory (SO), finding it to be negligible for the former and potentially significant for the latter.

Our Galaxy and the nearby Andromeda galaxy (M31) are the most massive members of the Local Group, and they seem to be a bound pair, despite the uncertainties on the relative motion of the two galaxies. A number of studies have shown that the two galaxies will likely undergo a close approach in the next 4$-$5 Gyr. We used direct $N$-body simulations to model this interaction to shed light on the future of the Milky Way - Andromeda system and for the first time explore the fate of the two supermassive black holes (SMBHs) that are located at their centers. We investigated how the uncertainties on the relative motion of the two galaxies, linked with the initial velocities and the density of the diffuse environment in which they move, affect the estimate of the time they need to merge and form ``Milkomeda''. After the galaxy merger, we follow the evolution of their two SMBHs up to their close pairing and fusion. Upon the fiducial set of parameters, we find that Milky Way and Andromeda will have their closest approach in the next 4.3 Gyr and merge over a span of 10 Gyr. Although the time of the first encounter is consistent with other predictions, we find that the merger occurs later than previously estimated. We also show that the two SMBHs will spiral in the inner region of Milkomeda and coalesce in less than 16.6 Myr after the merger of the two galaxies. Finally, we evaluate the gravitational-wave emission caused by the inspiral of the SMBHs, and we discuss the detectability of similar SMBH mergers in the nearby Universe ($z\leq 2$) through next-generation gravitational-wave detectors., Comment: 8 Pages, 11 Figures, 1 Table. The cross-correlation between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) fields and matter tracers carries important cosmological information. In this paper, we forecast by a signal-to-noise ratio analysis the information contained in the cross-correlation of the CMB anisotropy fields with source counts for future cosmological observations and its impact on cosmological parameters uncertainties, using a joint tomographic analysis. We include temperature, polarization and lensing for the CMB fields and galaxy number counts for the matter tracers. By restricting ourselves to quasi-linear scales, we forecast by a Fisher matrix formalism the relative importance of the cross-correlation of source counts with the CMB in the constraints on the parameters for several cosmological models. We obtain that the CMB-number counts cross-correlation can improve the dark energy Figure of Merit (FoM) at most up to a factor $\sim 2$ for LiteBIRD+CMB-S4 $\times$ SKA1 compared to the uncorrelated combination of both probes and will enable the Euclid-like photometric survey to reach the highest FoM among those considered here. We also forecast how CMB-galaxy clustering cross-correlation could increase the FoM of the neutrino sector, also enabling a statistically significant ($\gtrsim$ 3$\sigma$ for LiteBIRD+CMB-S4 $\times$ SPHEREx) detection of the minimal neutrino mass allowed in a normal hierarchy by using quasi-linear scales only. Analogously, we find that the uncertainty in the local primordial non-Gaussianity could be as low as $\sigma (f_{\rm NL}) \sim 1.5-2$ by using two-point statistics only with the combination of CMB and radio surveys such as EMU and SKA1. Our results highlight the additional constraining power of the cross-correlation between CMB and galaxy clustering from future surveys which is mainly based on quasi-linear scales and therefore sufficiently robust to non-linear effects., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, 10 tables

We show that a metastable dark matter candidate arises naturally from the conformal transformation between the Einstein metric, where gravitons are normalised states, and the Jordan metric dictating the coupling between gravity and matter. Despite being secluded from the Standard Model by a large scale above which the Jordan metric shows modifications to the Einstein frame metric, dark matter couples to the energy momentum tensor of the Higgs field in the primordial plasma primarily. This allows for the production of dark matter in a sufficient amount which complies with observations. The seclusion of dark matter makes it long-lived for masses $\lesssim 1$ MeV, with a lifetime much above the age of the Universe and the present experimental limits. Such a dark matter scenario has clear monochromatic signatures generated by the decay of the dark matter candidate into neutrino and/or $\gamma-$rays., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, matches the version published in PRD

Scalar-tensor theories whose phenomenology differs significantly from general relativity on large (e.g. cosmological) scales do not typically pass local experimental tests (e.g. in the solar system) unless they present a suitable "screening mechanism". An example is provided by chameleon screening, whereby the local general relativistic behavior is recovered in high density environments, at least in weak-field and quasi-static configurations. Here, we test the validity of chameleon screening in strong-field and highly relativistic/dynamical conditions, by performing fully non-linear simulations of neutron stars subjected to initial perturbations that cause them to oscillate or even collapse to a black hole. We confirm that screened chameleon stars are stable to sufficiently small radial oscillations, but that the frequency spectrum of the latter shows deviations from the general relativistic predictions. We also calculate the scalar fluxes produced during collapse to a black hole, and comment on their detectability with future gravitational-wave interferometers., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures

As modern-day precision cosmology aims for statistical uncertainties of the percent level or lower, it becomes increasingly important to reconsider estimator assumptions at each step of the process, and their consequences on the statistical variability of the scientific results. We compare $L^1$ regression statistics to the weighted mean, the canonical $L^2$ method based on Gaussian assumptions, for inference of the weak gravitational shear signal from a catalog of background ellipticity measurements around a sample of clusters, in many recent analyses a standard step in the process. We use the shape measurements of background sources around 6925 AMICO clusters detected in the KiDS 3rd data release. We investigate the robustness of our results and the dependence of uncertainties on the signal-to-noise ratios of the background source detections. Using a halo model approach, we derive lensing masses from the estimated excess surface density profiles. The highly significant shear signal allows us to study the scaling relation between the $r$-band cluster luminosity $L_{200}$, and the derived lensing mass $M_{200}$. We show the results of the scaling relations derived in 13 bins in $L_{200}$, with a tightly constrained power law slope of $\sim 1.24\pm 0.08$. We observe a small, but significant relative bias of a few percent in the recovered excess surface density profiles between the two regression methods, which translates to a $1\sigma$ difference in $M_{200}$. The efficiency of $L^1$ is at least that of the weighted mean, relatively increasing with higher signal-to-noise shape measurements. Our results indicate the relevance of optimizing the estimator for infering the gravitational shear from a distribution of background ellipticities. The detection of redshifted hyperfine line of neutral hydrogen (HI) is the most promising probe of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). We report an analysis of 55 hours of Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) Phase II drift scan EoR data. The data correspond to a central frequency $\nu_0 = 154.24 \, \rm MHz$ ($z\simeq 8.2$ for the redshifted HI hyperfine line) and bandwidth $B = 10.24 \, \rm MHz$. As one expects greater system stability in a drift scan, we test the system stability by comparing the extracted power spectra from data with noise simulations and show that the power spectra for the cleanest data behave as thermal noise. We compute the HI power spectrum as a function of time in one and two dimensions. The best upper limit on the one-dimensional power spectrum are: $\Delta^2(k) \simeq (1000~\rm mK)^2$ at $k \simeq 0.2$$h~{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ and at $k \simeq 1$$h~{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. The cleanest modes, which might be the most suited for obtaining the optimal signal-to-noise, correspond to $k \gtrsim 1$$h~{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. Possible interactions of dark matter (DM) with Standard Model (SM) particles can be tested with spectral distortions (SDs) of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In particular, a non-relativistic DM particle that scatters elastically with photons, electrons or nuclei imprints a negative chemical potential $\mu$ to the CMB spectrum. This article revisits the first study of this effect, with an accurate treatment of heat exchange between DM and SM particles. We show that the instantaneous-decoupling approximation made in the original study systematically and significantly underestimates the amplitude of SDs. As a consequence, we derive tighter upper bounds to the DM-SM elastic-scattering cross section for DM masses $m_\chi \lesssim 0.1$ MeV, from the non-detection of $\mu$-distortions by FIRAS. We also show that a future instrument like PIXIE, sensitive to $|\mu| \sim 10^{-8}$, would be able to probe DM-SM cross sections much smaller than first forecasted, and orders of magnitude below current upper limits from CMB-anisotropy data, up to DM masses of $\sim 1$ GeV. Lastly, we study the sensitivity of SDs to the electric and magnetic dipole moments of the DM. Although SDs can place non-trivial constraints on these models, we find that even future SD experiments are unlikely to improve upon the best current bounds. The new generation of wide-field time-domain surveys has made it feasible to study the clustering of supernova (SN) host galaxies in the large-scale structure (LSS) for the first time. We investigate the LSS environment of SN populations, using 106 dark matter density realisations with a resolution of $\sim$ 3.8 Mpc, constrained by the 2M++ galaxy survey. Precise measurements of the 21 cm power spectrum are crucial for understanding the physical processes of hydrogen reionization. Currently, this probe is being pursued by low-frequency radio interferometer arrays. As these experiments come closer to making a first detection of the signal, error estimation will play an increasingly important role in setting robust measurements. Using the delay power spectrum approach, we have produced a critical examination of different ways that one can estimate error bars on the power spectrum. We do this through a synthesis of analytic work, simulations of toy models, and tests on small amounts of real data. We find that, although computed independently, the different error bar methodologies are in good agreement with each other in the noise-dominated regime of the power spectrum. For our preferred methodology, the predicted probability distribution function is consistent with the empirical noise power distributions from both simulated and real data. Metastable cosmic strings are not topologically stable, but decay on cosmic time scales due to pair production of GUT monopoles. This leads to a network consisting of metastable long strings on superhorizon scales as well as of string loops and segments on subhorizon scales. We compute for the first time the complete stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) arising from all these network constituents, including several technical improvements to both the derivation of the loop and segment contributions. We find that the gravitational waves emitted by string loops provide the main contribution to the gravitational-wave spectrum in the relevant parameter space. The resulting spectrum is consistent with the tentative signal observed by the NANOGrav and Parkes pulsar timing collaborations for a string tension of G $_{��}$ ��� 10$^{-11���-7}$ and has ample discovery space for ground- and space-based detectors. For GUT-scale string tensions, G $_{��}$ ��� 10$^{-8���-7}$, metastable strings predict a SGWB in the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA band that could be discovered in the near future., Published by IOP, London

Using controlled numerical N-body experiments, we show how, in the collapse dynamics of an initially cold and uniform distribution of particles with a generic asymmetric shape, finite $N$ fluctuations and perturbations induced by the anisotropic gravitational field compete to determine the physical properties of the asymptotic quasi-stationary state. When finite $N$ fluctuations dominate the dynamics, the particle energy distribution changes greatly and the final density profile {decays outside its core} as $r^{-4}$ with an $N$-dependent amplitude. On the other hand, in the limit where the anisotropic perturbations dominate, the collapse is softer and the density profile shows a decay as $r^{-3}$, as is typical of halos in cosmological simulations. However, even in this limit, convergence with $N$ of the macroscopic properties of the virialized system, such as the particle energy distributions, the bound mass, and the density profile, is very slow and not clearly established, including for our largest simulations (with $N \sim 10^6$). Our results illustrate the challenges of accurately simulating the first collapsing structures in standard-type cosmological models, Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Early dark energy, as a proposed solution to the Hubble tension, faces an additional "why now" problem. Why should dark energy emerge just prior to recombination, billions of years before the onset of cosmic acceleration? Assisted quintessence explains this connection by positing that multiple scaling fields build up over time to drive the present-day cosmic acceleration. In this framework, early dark energy is inevitable. Yet, we show that scaling also leads to the demise of the scenario: the same feature that solves the coincidence problem then spoils a concordance of the Hubble constant inferred from the cosmic microwave background with that from the local distance ladder. We present constraints on inflationary dynamics and features in the primordial power spectrum of scalar perturbations using the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature, polarization data from Planck 2018 data release and updated likelihoods. We constrain the slow-roll dynamics using Hilltop Quartic Potential and Starobinsky $R+R^2$ model in the Einstein frame using the Planck 2018 binned Plik likelihood. Using the Hilltop as base potential we construct Whipped Inflation potential to introduce suppression in the scalar power spectrum at large angular scales. We notice marginal (68% C.L.) preference of suppression from the large scale temperature angular power spectrum. However, large-scale E-mode likelihood, based on high frequency instrument cross spectrum, does not support this suppression and in the combined data the preference towards the suppression becomes negligible. Based on the Hilltop and Starobinsky model we construct the Wiggly Whipped Inflation potentials to introduce oscillatory features along with the suppression. We use unbinned data from the recently released CamSpec v12.5 likelihood which updates Planck 2018 results. We compare the Bayesian evidences of the feature models with their baseline slow-roll potentials. We find that the complete slow-roll baseline potential is moderately preferred against potentials which generate features. Compared to Planck 2015 PlikHM bin1 likelihood, we find that the significance of sharp features has decreased owing to the updates in the data analysis pipeline. In the same base setup as Sakharov's induced gravity, we investigate emergence of gravity in effective quantum field theories (QFT), with particular emphasis on the gauge sector in which gauge bosons acquire anomalous masses in proportion to the ultraviolet cutoff $\Lambda_\wp$. Drawing on the fact that $\Lambda_\wp^2$ corrections explicitly break the gauge and Poincare symmetries, we find that it is possible to map $\Lambda_\wp^2$ to spacetime curvature as a covariance relation and we find also that this map erases the anomalous gauge boson masses. The resulting framework describes gravity by the general relativity (GR) and matter by the QFT itself with $\log\Lambda_\wp$ corrections (dimensional regularization). This QFT-GR concord predicts existence of new physics beyond the Standard Model such that the new physics can be a weakly-interacting or even a non-interacting sector comprising the dark matter, dark energy and possibly more. The next generation of galaxy surveys will allow us to test some fundamental aspects of the standard cosmological model, including the assumption of a minimal coupling between the components of the dark sector. In this paper, we present the Javalambre Physics of the Accelerated Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) forecasts on a class of unified models where cold dark matter interacts with a vacuum energy, considering future observations of baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift-space distortions, and the matter power spectrum. After providing a general framework to study the background and linear perturbations, we focus on a concrete interacting model without momentum exchange by taking into account the contribution of baryons. We compare the J-PAS results with those expected for DESI and Euclid surveys and show that J-PAS is competitive to them, especially at low redshifts. Two of the most rapidly growing observables in cosmology and astrophysics are gravitational waves (GW) and the neutral hydrogen (HI) distribution. In this work, we investigate the cross-correlation between resolved gravitational wave detections and HI signal from intensity mapping (IM) experiments. By using a tomographic approach with angular power spectra, including all projection effects, we explore possible applications of the combination of the Einstein Telescope and the SKAO intensity mapping surveys. We focus on three main topics: \textit{(i)} statistical inference of the observed redshift distribution of GWs; \textit{(ii)} constraints on dynamical dark energy models as an example of cosmological studies; \textit{(iii)} determination of the nature of the progenitors of merging binary black holes, distinguishing between primordial and astrophysical origin. Our results show that: \textit{(i)} the GW redshift distribution can be calibrated with good accuracy at low redshifts, without any assumptions on cosmology or astrophysics, potentially providing a way to probe astrophysical and cosmological models; \textit{(ii)} the constrains on the dynamical dark energy parameters are competitive with IM-only experiments, in a complementary way and potentially with less systematics; \textit{(iii)} it will be possible to detect a relatively small abundance of primordial black holes within the gravitational waves from resolved mergers. Our results extend towards $\mathrm{GW \times IM}$ the promising field of multi-tracing cosmology and astrophysics, which has the major advantage of allowing scientific investigations in ways that would not be possible by looking at single observables separately., Comment: 36 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. It has been shown beyond reasonable doubt that the majority (about 95%) of the total energy budget of the universe is given by the dark components, namely Dark Matter and Dark Energy. What constitutes these components remains to be satisfactorily understood however, despite a number of promising candidates. An associated conundrum is that of the coincidence, i.e. the question as to why the Dark Matter and Dark Energy densities are of the same order of magnitude at the present epoch, after evolving over the entire expansion history of the universe. In an attempt to address these, we consider a quantum potential resulting from a quantum corrected Raychaudhuri/Friedmann equation in presence of a cosmic fluid, which is presumed to be a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of ultralight bosons. For a suitable and physically motivated macroscopic ground state wavefunction of the BEC, we show that a unified picture of the cosmic dark sector can indeed emerge, thus resolving the issue of the coincidence. The effective Dark energy component turns out to be a cosmological constant, by virtue of a residual homogeneous term in the quantum potential. Furthermore, comparison with the observational data gives an estimate of the mass of the constituent bosons in the BEC, which is well within the bounds predicted from other considerations., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory will increase the number of observed supernovae (SNe) by an order of magnitude; however, it is impossible to spectroscopically confirm the class for all the SNe discovered. Thus, photometric classification is crucial but its accuracy depends on the not-yet-finalized observing strategy of Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). We quantitatively analyze the impact of the LSST observing strategy on SNe classification using simulated multi-band light curves from the Photometric LSST Astronomical Time-Series Classification Challenge (PLAsTiCC). First, we augment the simulated training set to be representative of the photometric redshift distribution per supernovae class, the cadence of observations, and the flux uncertainty distribution of the test set. Then we build a classifier using the photometric transient classification library snmachine, based on wavelet features obtained from Gaussian process fits, yielding similar performance to the winning PLAsTiCC entry. We study the classification performance for SNe with different properties within a single simulated observing strategy. We find that season length is important, with light curves of 150 days yielding the highest performance. Cadence also has an important impact on SNe classification; events with median inter-night gap 10 days) in light curve observations do not impact performance if sufficient observations are available on either side, due to the effectiveness of the Gaussian process interpolation. This analysis is the first exploration of the impact of observing strategy on photometric supernova classification with LSST., 18 pages, 13 figures. We present measurements of the morphology of star-forming gas in galaxies from the EAGLE simulations, and its alignment relative to stars and dark matter (DM). Imaging of such gas in the radio continuum enables weak lensing experiments that complement traditional optical approaches. Star-forming gas is typically more flattened than its associated stars and DM, particularly for present-day subhaloes of total mass $\sim$$10^{ 12-12.5} \mathrm{M_{ \odot}}$, which preferentially host star-forming galaxies with rotationally-supported stellar discs. Such systems have oblate, spheroidal star-forming gas distributions, but in both less- and more-massive subhaloes the distributions tend to be prolate, and its morphology correlates positively and significantly with that of its host galaxy's stars, both in terms of sphericity and triaxiality. The minor axis of star-forming gas most commonly aligns with the minor axis of its host subhalo's DM, but often aligns more closely with one of the other two principal axes of the DM distribution in prolate subhaloes. Star-forming gas aligns with DM less strongly than is the case for stars, but its morphological minor axis aligns closely with its kinematic axis, affording a route to observational identification of the unsheared morphological axis. The projected ellipticities of star-forming gas in EAGLE are consistent with shapes inferred from high-fidelity radio continuum images, and they exhibit greater shape noise than is the case for images of the stars, owing to the greater characteristic flattening of star-forming gas with respect to stars., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures. We study the explosive production of gauge fields during axion inflation in a novel gradient expansion formalism that describes the time evolution of a set of bilinear electromagnetic functions in position space. Based on this formalism, we are able to simultaneously account for two important effects that have thus far been mostly treated in isolation: (i) the backreaction of the produced gauge fields on the evolution of the inflaton field and (ii) the Schwinger pair production of charged particles in the strong gauge-field background. This allows us to show that the suppression of the gauge-field production due to the Schwinger effect can prevent the backreaction in scenarios in which it would otherwise be relevant. Moreover, we point out that the induced current, $\boldsymbol{J} = \sigma \boldsymbol{E}$, also dampens the Bunch-Davies vacuum fluctuations deep inside the Hubble horizon. We describe this suppression by a new parameter $\Delta$ that is related to the time integral over the conductivity $\sigma$ which hence renders the description of the entire system inherently nonlocal in time. Finally, we demonstrate how our formalism can be used to construct highly accurate solutions for the mode functions of the gauge field in Fourier space, which serves as a starting point for a wealth of further phenomenological applications, including the phenomenology of primordial perturbations and baryogenesis., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

We consider relatively heavy neutrinos $\nu_H$, mostly contributing to a sterile state $\nu_s$, with mass in the range 10 MeV $\lesssim m_s \lesssim m_{\pi} \sim 135$ MeV, which are thermally produced in the early universe in collisional processes involving active neutrinos, and freezing out after the QCD phase transition. If these neutrinos decay after the active neutrino decoupling, they generate extra neutrino radiation, but also contribute to entropy production. Thus, they alter the value of the effective number of neutrino species $N_{\rm eff}$ as for instance measured by the cosmic microwave background (CMB), as well as affect primordial nucleosynthesis (BBN), notably ${}^4$He production. We provide a detailed account of the solution of the relevant Boltzmann equations. Measurements of galaxy clustering in upcoming surveys such as those planned for the Euclid and Roman satellites, and the SKA Observatory, will be sensitive to distortions from lensing magnification and Doppler effects, beyond the standard redshift-space distortions. The amplitude of these contributions depends sensitively on magnification bias and evolution bias in the galaxy number density. Magnification bias quantifies the change in the observed number of galaxies gained or lost by lensing magnification, while evolution bias quantifies the physical change in the galaxy number density relative to the conserved case. These biases are given by derivatives of the number density, and consequently are very sensitive to the form of the luminosity function. We give a careful derivation of the magnification and evolution biases, clarifying a number of results in the literature. We then examine the biases for a variety of surveys, encompassing galaxy surveys and line intensity mapping at radio and optical/near-infrared wavelengths., Comment: Typo corrected in equation (A.10)

We present a revised measurement of the optical extragalactic background light (EBL), based on the contribution of resolved galaxies to the integrated galaxy light (IGL). The cosmic optical background radiation (COB), encodes the light generated by star-formation, and provides a wealth of information about the cosmic star formation history (CSFH). We combine wide and deep galaxy number counts from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA) and Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS), along with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive and other deep survey datasets, in 9 multi-wavelength filters to measure the COB in the range from 0.35 micron to 2.2 micron. We derive the luminosity density in each band independently and show good agreement with recent and complementary estimates of the optical-EBL from very high-energy (VHE) experiments. Our error analysis suggests that the IGL and Gamma-ray measurements are now fully consistent to within ~10%, suggesting little need for any additional source of diffuse light beyond the known galaxy population. We use our revised IGL measurements to constrain the cosmic star-formation history, and place amplitude constraints on a number of recent estimates. As a consistency check, we can now demonstrate convincingly, that the CSFH, stellar mass growth, and the optical-EBL provide a fully consistent picture of galaxy evolution. We conclude that the peak of star-formation rate lies in the range 0.066-0.076 Msol/yr/Mpc^3 at a lookback time of 9.1 to 10.9 Gyrs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) is a popular technique for assigning galaxy mass or luminosity to haloes produced in N-body simulations. The method works by matching the cumulative number functions of the galaxy and halo properties, and is therefore sensitive both to the precise definitions of those properties and to the selection criteria used to define the samples. Further dependence follows when SHAM parameters are calibrated with galaxy clustering, which is known to depend strongly on the manner in which galaxies are selected. In this paper we introduce a new parametrization for SHAM and derive the best-fitting SHAM parameters as a function of various properties of the selection of the galaxy sample and of the photometric definition, including Sérsic versus Petrosian magnitudes, stellar masses versus r-band magnitudes, and optical (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) versus HI (ALFALFA) selection. In each case we calculate the models' goodness-of-fit to measurements of the projected two-point galaxy correlation function. In the optically selected samples we find strong evidence that the scatter in the galaxy-halo connection increases towards the faint end, and that AM performs better with luminosity than stellar mass. The SHAM parameters of optically and HI-selected galaxies are mutually exclusive, with the latter suggesting the importance of properties beyond halo mass. We provide best-fitting parameters for the SHAM galaxy-halo connection as a function of each of our input choices, extending the domain of validity of the model while reducing potential systematic error in its use. © 2021 The Author(s)., RS was supported by the Oxford Astrophysics Summer Research Programme. The highly neutral inter-galactic medium (IGM) during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) is expected to suppress Ly$\alpha$ emission with damping-wing absorption, causing nearly no Ly$\alpha$ detection from star-forming galaxies at $z{\sim}8$. However, spectroscopic observations of the 4 brightest galaxies (${\rm H}_{160}{\sim}25$ mag) at these redshifts do reveal prominent Ly$\alpha$ line, suggesting locally ionised IGM. In this paper, we explore the Ly$\alpha$ IGM transmission and environment of bright galaxies during the EoR using the Meraxes semi-analytic model. We find brighter galaxies to be less affected by damping-wing absorption as they are effective at ionizing surrounding neutral hydrogen. Specifically, the brightest sources (${\rm H}_{160}{\lesssim}25.5$ mag) lie in the largest ionized regions in our simulation, and have low attenuation of their Ly$\alpha$ from the IGM (optical depth ${, Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, submitted to MNRAS, comments are welcome
