Biases against women in the workplace have been documented in various studies. There is also a growing body of literature on biases within academia. But particularly in STEM, due to the heavily male-dominated field, studies suggest that if one's gender is identifiable, women are more likely to get their papers rejected and not cited as often as men. We propose two simple modifications to tackle gender bias in STEM that can be applied to (but not only) IEEE conferences and journals. Regarding paper acceptance, we propose a double-blind review, and regarding paper citation, we propose one single letter to identify the authors' first names, followed by their family names. We also propose other modifications regarding gender bias in STEM and academia and encourage further reforms supported by current research on this topic with gender-segregated data.

We propose X-index -- the proportion of papers' citations coming from outside their research field -- and use this metric to analyze citations of CHI, UIST, and CSCW papers between 2010 and 2022. We found an overall decreasing X-index by several measures, indicating that HCI papers have been more and more likely to be cited by HCI papers rather than by non-HCI papers.

The nature of interaction within Interactive Digital Narrative (IDN) is inherently complex. This is due, in part, to the wide range of potential interaction modes through which IDNs can be conceptualised, produced and deployed and the complex dynamics this might entail. The purpose of this whitepaper is to provide IDN practitioners with the essential knowledge on the nature of interaction in IDNs and allow them to make informed design decisions that lead to the incorporation of complexity thinking throughout the design pipeline, the implementation of the work, and the ways its audience perceives it. This white paper is concerned with the complexities of authoring, delivering and processing dynamic interactive contents from the perspectives of both creators and audiences. To prevent potential bias in the paper review and selection process for conferences and journals, most include double blind review. Despite this, studies show that bias still exists. Recommendation algorithms for paper review also may have implicit bias. We offer three fair methods that specifically take into account author diversity in paper recommendation to address this. Our methods provide fair outcomes across many protected variables concurrently, in contrast to typical fair algorithms that only use one protected variable. Five demographic characteristics-gender, ethnicity, career stage, university rank, and geolocation-are included in our multidimensional author profiles. The Overall Diversity approach uses a score for overall diversity to rank publications. The Round Robin Diversity technique chooses papers from authors who are members of each protected group in turn, whereas the Multifaceted Diversity method chooses papers that initially fill the demographic feature with the highest importance. We compare the effectiveness of author diversity profiles based on Boolean and continuous-valued features. By selecting papers from a pool of SIGCHI 2017, DIS 2017, and IUI 2017 papers, we recommend papers for SIGCHI 2017 and evaluate these algorithms using the user profiles. We contrast the papers that were recommended with those that were selected by the conference. We find that utilizing profiles with either Boolean or continuous feature values, all three techniques boost diversity while just slightly decreasing utility or not decreasing. By choosing authors who are 42.50% more diverse and with a 2.45% boost in utility, our best technique, Multifaceted Diversity, suggests a set of papers that match demographic parity. The explosion of conference paper submissions in AI and related fields, has underscored the need to improve many aspects of the peer review process, especially the matching of papers and reviewers. Recent work argues that the key to improve this matching is to modify aspects of the \emph{bidding phase} itself, to ensure that the set of bids over papers is balanced, and in particular to avoid \emph{orphan papers}, i.e., those papers that receive no bids. In an attempt to understand and mitigate this problem, we have developed a flexible bidding platform to test adaptations to the bidding process. Using this platform, we performed a field experiment during the bidding phase of a medium-size international workshop that compared two bidding methods. We further examined via controlled experiments on Amazon Mechanical Turk various factors that affect bidding, in particular the order in which papers are presented \cite{cabanac2013capitalizing,fiez2020super}; and information on paper demand \cite{meir2021market}. We study generalised rock-paper-scissors models with an arbitrary odd number N \geq 5 of species, among which n are weak, with 2 \leq n \leq (N-1)/2. Because of the species' weakness, the probability of individuals conquering territory in the cyclic spatial game is low. Running stochastic simulations, we study the role of unevenness in the rock-paper-scissors game in spatial patterns and population dynamics, considering diverse models where the weak species are in different positions in the cyclic game order. Studying systems with five and seven species, we discover that the individuals' spatial organisation arising from the pattern formation process determines the stability of the cyclic game with multiple weak species. Our outcomes show that the presence of species unbalances the spatial distribution of organisms of the same species bringing consequences on territorial dominance, with the predominant species being determined by the position in the cyclic game order. Our simulations elucidate that, in general, the further apart the regions inhabited by different weak species are, the less the coexistence between the species is jeopardised. We show that if multiple weak species occupy adjacent spatial domains, the unevenness in the cyclic game is reinforced, maximising the chances of biodiversity loss. The performance of a machine learning model degrades when it is applied to data from a similar but different domain than the data it has initially been trained on. The goal of domain adaptation (DA) is to mitigate this domain shift problem by searching for an optimal feature transformation to learn a domain-invariant representation. Such a domain shift can appear in handwriting recognition (HWR) applications where the motion pattern of the hand and with that the motion pattern of the pen is different for writing on paper and on tablet. This becomes visible in the sensor data for online handwriting (OnHW) from pens with integrated inertial measurement units. This paper proposes a supervised DA approach to enhance learning for OnHW recognition between tablet and paper data. Our method exploits loss functions such as maximum mean discrepancy and correlation alignment to learn a domain-invariant feature representation (i.e., similar covariances between tablet and paper features). We use a triplet loss that takes negative samples of the auxiliary domain (i.e., paper samples) to increase the amount of samples of the tablet dataset. We conduct an evaluation on novel sequence-based OnHW datasets (i.e., words) and show an improvement on the paper domain with an early fusion strategy by using pairwise learning., Comment: Accepted at IAPR Intl. In this paper, we analyse the results and claims presented in the paper \emph{`Are Randomized Caches Truly Random? Formal Analysis of Randomized Partitioned Caches'}, presented at HPCA conference 2023. In addition, we also analyse the applicability of `Bucket and Ball' analytical model presented in MIRAGE (Usenix Security 2021) for its security estimation. We put forth the fallacies in the original bucket and ball model and discuss its implications. Finally, we demonstrate a cache occupancy attack on MIRAGE with just $10\%$ of total cache capacity and extend the framework to establish a covert channel and a template-based fingerprinting attack.

We provide a detailed proof of Proposition 3.1 in the paper titled ``Backstepping control of a class of space-time-varying linear parabolic PDEs via time invariant kernel functions''. In the paper titled ``Backstepping control of a class of space-time-varying linear parabolic PDEs via time invariant kernel functions'', we addressed the problem of exponential stabilization and continuous dependence of solutions on initial data in different norms for a class of $1$-D linear parabolic PDEs with space-time-varying coefficients under backstepping boundary control. In order to stabilize the system without involving a Gevrey-like condition or the event-triggered scheme, a boundary feedback controller was designed via a time invariant kernel function. By using the approximative Lyapunov method, the exponential stability of the closed-loop system was established in the spatial $L^{p}$-norm and $W^{1,p}$-norm, respectively, whenever $p\in [1, +\infty]$. Academic, peer-reviewed short papers are a common way to present a late-breaking work to the academic community that outlines preliminary findings, research ideas, and novel conversations. By comparison, blogging or writing posts on social media are an unstructured and open way to discuss ideas and start new conversations. Both have limitations in the proliferation of research ideas. The short paper format relies on the conference and journal submission process while blogging does not operate within a structured format or set of expectations at all. However, at times the demand exists for late-breaking ideas and conversations to arise in a raw form or with urgency but should still be archived and recorded in a way that promotes citational honesty and integrity. To address this, I present: The Micro-Paper, as a micro-paper itself. The Micro-Paper is a small, cheap, accessible, digital document that is self-published and archived, akin to a pre-print of a short paper. [Context] Systematic Literature Review (SLR) has been a major type of study published in Software Engineering (SE) venues for about two decades. However, there is a lack of understanding of whether an SLR is really needed in comparison to a more conventional literature review. Very often, SE researchers embark on an SLR with such doubts. We aspire to provide more understanding of when an SLR in SE should be conducted. [Objective] The first step of our investigation was focused on the dataset, i.e., the reviewed papers, in an SLR, which indicates the development of a research topic or area. The objective of this step is to provide a better understanding of the characteristics of the datasets of SLRs in SE. [Method] A research synthesis was conducted on a sample of 170 SLRs published in top-tier SE journals. We extracted and analysed the quantitative attributes of the datasets of these SLRs. [Results] The findings show that the median size of the datasets in our sample is 57 reviewed papers, and the median review period covered is 14 years. The number of reviewed papers and review period have a very weak and non-significant positive correlation. The main goal of this work, the second in a three-paper series, is to test the impact of a methodological improvement in measuring the magnification bias signal on a sample of submillimeter galaxies and its implications for constraining cosmological parameters. Given the rapid ascent of large language models (LLMs), we study the question: (How) can large language models help in reviewing of scientific papers or proposals? We first conduct some pilot studies where we find that (i) GPT-4 outperforms other LLMs (Bard, Vicuna, Koala, Alpaca, LLaMa, Dolly, OpenAssistant, StableLM), and (ii) prompting with a specific question (e.g., to identify errors) outperforms prompting to simply write a review. With these insights, we study the use of LLMs (specifically, GPT-4) for three tasks: 1. Identifying errors: We construct 13 short computer science papers each with a deliberately inserted error, and ask the LLM to check for the correctness of these papers. We observe that the LLM finds errors in 7 of them, spanning both mathematical and conceptual errors. 2. Verifying checklists: We task the LLM to verify 16 closed-ended checklist questions in the respective sections of 15 NeurIPS 2022 papers. We find that across 119 {checklist question, paper} pairs, the LLM had an 86.6% accuracy. 3. Choosing the "better" paper: We generate 10 pairs of abstracts, deliberately designing each pair in such a way that one abstract was clearly superior than the other. The LLM, however, struggled to discern these relatively straightforward distinctions accurately, committing errors in its evaluations for 6 out of the 10 pairs. Based on these experiments, we think that LLMs have a promising use as reviewing assistants for specific reviewing tasks, but not (yet) for complete evaluations of papers or proposals.

The state-of-the-art in paper mechanics calls for novel experimental data covering the full-field hygro-expansion of inter-fiber bonds in paper, i.e., the 3D morphological changes and inter-fiber interactions. Therefore, a recently developed full-field single fiber hygro-expansion measurement methodology based on global digital height correlation is extended to orthogonally bonded inter-fiber bonds, to investigate their full-field quasi-3D hygroscopic behavior. A sample holder has been developed which enables the quasi-3D characterization of the initial geometry of individual inter-fiber bonds, including the fiber thickness and width along the length of the fibers as well as the degree of wrap around and contact area of the bond, which are vital for understanding the inter-fiber bond hygro-mechanics. Full-field hygroscopic testing revealed novel insights on the inter-fiber interactions: (i) the transverse hygro-expansion of each fiber strongly reduces when approaching the bonded area, due to the significantly lower longitudinal hygro-expansion of the other bonded fiber. (ii) The relatively large transverse strain of one fiber stretches the other crossing fiber in its longitudinal direction, thereby significantly contributing to the sheet scale hygro-expansion. (iii) Out-of-plane bending is observed in the bonded region which is driven by the significant difference in transverse and longitudinal hygro-expansion of, respectively, the top and bottom fiber constituting the bond. A bi-layer laminate model is derived to rationalize the bending deformation and an adequate match is found with the experimental data. Under the assumption of zero bending, which represents constrained inter-fiber bonds inside a paper sheet, the model is able to predict the contribution of the transverse strain in the bonded regions to the sheet-scale hygro-expansion., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

We present the white paper developed during the QEYSSat 2.0 study, which was undertaken between June 2021 and March 2022. The study objective was to establish a technology road-map for a Canada-wide quantum network enabled by satellites. We survey the state-of-art in quantum communication technologies, identify the main applications and architectures, review the technical readiness levels and technology bottlenecks and identify a future mission scenario. We report the findings of a dedicated one-day workshop that included Canadian stakeholders from government, industry and academia to gather inputs and insights for the applications and technical road-map. We also provide an overview of the Quantum EncrYption and Science Satellite (QEYSSat) mission expected to launch in 2024-2025 and its anticipated outcomes. One of the main outcomes of this study is that developing the main elements for a Canada-wide quantum internet will have the highest level of impact, which includes Canada-wide entanglement distribution and teleportation. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are widely used in various applications due to their extraordinary properties. In particular, their electrochemical stability, low electrical resistance, and huge specific surface area make them very interesting active materials for supercapacitors. Herein, flexible, biodegradable, and low-cost supercapacitors are introduced in a very simple way based on hand-drawing pencil traces or -rubbing molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), titanium trisulfide (TiS3) and franckeite traces on the paper. Results demonstrate that pencil-drawn paper has higher capacitance performance (~6.39 F/g) among the suggested electrodes. Interestingly, the introduced MoS2/pencil, TiS3/pencil, and franckeite/pencil drawn paper electrodes reveal dramatic improvements with long cyclic life thanks to the occurrence of synergetic effects and higher available active cites within the heterostructures. Moreover, the assembled symmetric solid-state supercapacitors retain their performance even under applied bending, indicating their excellent potential for wearable/flexible applications.

Instead of relying on human-annotated training samples to build a classifier, weakly supervised scientific paper classification aims to classify papers only using category descriptions (e.g., category names, category-indicative keywords). Existing studies on weakly supervised paper classification are less concerned with two challenges: (1) Papers should be classified into not only coarse-grained research topics but also fine-grained themes, and potentially into multiple themes, given a large and fine-grained label space; and (2) full text should be utilized to complement the paper title and abstract for classification. Moreover, instead of viewing the entire paper as a long linear sequence, one should exploit the structural information such as citation links across papers and the hierarchy of sections and paragraphs in each paper. To tackle these challenges, in this study, we propose FUTEX, a framework that uses the cross-paper network structure and the in-paper hierarchy structure to classify full-text scientific papers under weak supervision. A network-aware contrastive fine-tuning module and a hierarchy-aware aggregation module are designed to leverage the two types of structural signals, respectively. Citations in scientific papers not only help us trace the intellectual lineage but also are a useful indicator of the scientific significance of the work. Citation intents prove beneficial as they specify the role of the citation in a given context. In this paper, we present CitePrompt, a framework which uses the hitherto unexplored approach of prompt-based learning for citation intent classification. We argue that with the proper choice of the pretrained language model, the prompt template, and the prompt verbalizer, we can not only get results that are better than or comparable to those obtained with the state-of-the-art methods but also do it with much less exterior information about the scientific document. We report state-of-the-art results on the ACL-ARC dataset, and also show significant improvement on the SciCite dataset over all baseline models except one. As suitably large labelled datasets for citation intent classification can be quite hard to find, in a first, we propose the conversion of this task to the few-shot and zero-shot settings. For the ACL-ARC dataset, we report a 53.86% F1 score for the zero-shot setting, which improves to 63.61% and 66.99% for the 5-shot and 10-shot settings, respectively., Comment: Selected for publication at ACM/IEEE JOINT CONFERENCE ON DIGITAL LIBRARIES 2023

Both Poincar\'e in his 1900 Festschrift paper \cite{Poincare} and Einstein in his 1905 \textsl{Annalen der Physik} article \cite{Einstein} were led to $E=mc^2$ by considering electromagnetic processes taking place in vacuo. Poincar\'e's treatment is based on a generalization of the law of conservation of momentum to include radiation. Einstein's analysis relies solely on energy conservation and the relativity principle together with certain assumptions, which have served as the source of criticism of the paper beginning with Max Planck in 1907. We show that these objections raised by Planck and others can be traced back to Einstein's failure to make use of momentum considerations. Relevance of our findings to a proper understanding of Ives' criticism of Einstein's paper is pointed out.

What is the effect of releasing a preprint of a paper before it is submitted for peer review? No randomized controlled trial has been conducted, so we turn to observational data to answer this question. We use data from the ICLR conference (2018--2022) and apply methods from causal inference to estimate the effect of arXiving a paper before the reviewing period (early arXiving) on its acceptance to the conference. Adjusting for 18 confounders such as topic, authors, and quality, we may estimate the causal effect. However, since quality is a challenging construct to estimate, we use the negative outcome control method, using paper citation count as a control variable to debias the quality confounding effect. Our results suggest that early arXiving may have a small effect on a paper's chances of acceptance. However, this effect (when existing) does not differ significantly across different groups of authors, as grouped by author citation count and institute rank. This suggests that early arXiving does not provide an advantage to any particular group.

Robotic manipulation of slender objects is challenging, especially when the induced deformations are large and nonlinear. Traditionally, learning-based control approaches, such as imitation learning, have been used to address deformable material manipulation. These approaches lack generality and often suffer critical failure from a simple switch of material, geometric, and/or environmental (e.g., friction) properties. This article tackles a fundamental but difficult deformable manipulation task: forming a predefined fold in paper with only a single manipulator. A data-driven framework combining physically-accurate simulation and machine learning is used to train a deep neural network capable of predicting the external forces induced on the manipulated paper given a grasp position. We frame the problem using scaling analysis, resulting in a control framework robust against material and geometric changes. Path planning is then carried out over the generated "neural force manifold" to produce robot manipulation trajectories optimized to prevent sliding, with offline trajectory generation finishing 15$\times$ faster than previous physics-based folding methods. The inference speed of the trained model enables the incorporation of real-time visual feedback to achieve closed-loop sensorimotor control. Mobility data captures the locations of moving objects such as humans, animals, and cars. With the availability of GPS-equipped mobile devices and other inexpensive location-tracking technologies, mobility data is collected ubiquitously. In recent years, the use of mobility data has demonstrated significant impact in various domains including traffic management, urban planning, and health sciences. In this paper, we present the emerging domain of mobility data science. Towards a unified approach to mobility data science, we envision a pipeline having the following components: mobility data collection, cleaning, analysis, management, and privacy. Earlier works in literature on the hygro-expansion of paper state that the larger hygro-expansivity of freely compared to restrained dried handsheets is due to structural differences between the fibers inside the handsheet. To unravel this hypothesis, first, the hygro-expansion of freely and restrained dried, hardwood and softwood handsheets has been characterized. Subsequently, the transient full-field hygro-expansion (longitudinal, transverse, and shear strain) of fibers extracted from these handsheets was measured using global digital height correlation, from which the micro-fibril angle was deduced. The hygro-expansivity of each individual fiber was tested before and after a wetting period, during which the fiber's moisture content is maximized, to analyze if a restrained dried fiber can "transform" into a freely dried fiber. It was found that the longitudinal hygro-expansion of the freely dried fibers is significantly larger than the restrained dried fibers, consistent with the sheet-scale differences. The difference in micro-fibril angle between the freely and restrained dried fibers is a possible explanation for this difference, but merely for the hardwood fibers, which are able to "transform" to freely dried fibers after being soaked in water. In contrast, this "transformation" does not happen in softwood fibers, even after full immersion in water for a day. Various mechanisms have been studied to explain the observations on freely and restrained dried hardwood and softwood, fiber and handsheets including analysis of the fibers' lumen and cross-sectional shape. In the Hydro project we are designing a compiler toolkit that can optimize for the concerns of distributed systems, including scale-up and scale-down, availability, and consistency of outcomes across replicas. This invited paper overviews the project, and provides an early walk-through of the kind of optimization that is possible. We illustrate how type transformations as well as local program transformations can combine, step by step, to convert a single-node program into a variety of distributed design points that offer the same semantics with different performance and deployment characteristics.

We motivate the cosmological science case of measuring Type Ia supernovae with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as part of the High Latitude Time Domain Survey. We discuss previously stated requirements for the science, and a baseline survey strategy. We discuss the various areas that must still be optimized and point to the other white papers that consider these topics in detail. Overall, the baseline case should enable an exquisite measurement of dark energy using SNe Ia from z=0.1 to z>2, and further optimization should only strengthen this once-in-a-generation experiment.

Following a suggestion in a footnote of the paper \cite {Fa} by Fano, we give a direct proof of the fact that one of the two Fano threefolds of maximal degree 72 in $\p^{38}$ is isomorphic to the anticanonically embedded weighted projective space $\p(1,1,4,6)$.

This erratum highlights a very serious error in a paper published by SIAM Review in 2011. The error is in Section 6.2 of [1]. It is very important to notify this error because of the following two reasons: (i) [1] is one of the most cited contributions in the field of identifiability of viral dynamics models, and (ii)the error is relevant because, as a result of it, a very popular viral model (perhaps the most popular in the field of HIV dynamics) has been classified as identifiable. In contrast, three of its parameters are not identifiable, even locally. This erratum first proves the non uniqueness of the three unidentifiable parameters by exhibiting infinitely many distinct but indistinguishable values of them. The non uniqueness is even local. Then, this erratum details the error made by the authors of [1] which produced the claimed (but false) local identifiability of all the model parameters., Comment: SIAM review refuses to publish this erratum. This is in my opinion a very wrong decision which significantly deteriorates the rank of this journal. Or, even worse, this decision highlights an unfortunately low rank of this journal

Type-I Superluminous Supernovae (SLSNe) are an exotic class of core-collapse SN (CCSN) that can be up to 100 times brighter and more slowly-evolving than normal CCSNe. SLSNe represent the end-stages of the most massive stripped stars, and are thought to be powered by the spin-down energy of a millisecond magnetar. Studying them and measuring their physical parameters can help us to better understand stellar mass-loss, evolution, and explosions. Moreover, thanks to their high luminosities, SLSNe can be seen up to greater distances, allowing us to explore how stellar physics evolves as a function of redshift. The High Latitude Time Domain Survey (HLTDS) will provide us with an exquisite dataset that will discover 100s of SLSNe. Here, we focus on the question of which sets of filters and cadences will allow us to best characterize the physical parameters of these SLSNe. We simulate a set of SLSNe at redshifts ranging from z = 0.1 to z = 5.0, using six different sets of filters, and cadences ranging from 5 to 100 days. We then fit these simulated light curves to attempt to recover the input parameter values for their ejecta mass, ejecta velocity, magnetic field strength, and magnetar spin period. We find that four filters are sufficient to accurately characterize SLSNe at redshifts below $z = 3$, and that cadences faster than 20 days are required to obtain measurements with an uncertainty below 10\%, although a cadence of 70 days is still acceptable under certain conditions. Finally, we find that the nominal survey strategy will not be able to properly characterize the most distant SLSNe at $z = 5$. Static analysis is widely used for software assurance. However, static analysis tools can report an overwhelming number of warnings, many of which are false positives. Applying static analysis to a new version, a large number of warnings can be only relevant to the old version. Inspecting these warnings is a waste of time and can prevent developers from finding the new bugs in the new version. In this paper, we report the challenges of cascading warnings generated from two versions of programs. We investigated program differencing tools and extend them to perform warning cascading automatically. Specifically, we used textual based diff tool, namely SCALe, abstract syntax tree (AST) based diff tool, namely GumTree, and control flow graph (CFG) based diff tool, namely Hydrogen. We reported our experience of applying these tools and hopefully our findings can provide developers understandings of pros and cons of each approach. In our evaluation, we used 96 pairs of benchmark programs for which we know ground-truth bugs and fixes as well as 12 pairs of real-world open-source projects. Generative deep learning models are able to create realistic audio and video. This technology has been used to impersonate the faces and voices of individuals. These ``deepfakes'' are being used to spread misinformation, enable scams, perform fraud, and blackmail the innocent. The technology continues to advance and today attackers have the ability to generate deepfakes in real-time. This new capability poses a significant threat to society as attackers begin to exploit the technology in advances social engineering attacks. In this paper, we discuss the implications of this emerging threat, identify the challenges with preventing these attacks and suggest a better direction for researching stronger defences.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have showcased remarkable capabilities in natural language understanding in various domains. These models can usually behave well on daily dialog, or question answering scenarios, however, in areas that value precision, for example, in medical applications, they often exhibit unsatisfactory performance due to a lack of domain-specific knowledge. In this report, we introduce PMC-LLaMA, an open-source language model that is acquired by fine-tuning an open-source language model on a total of 4.8 million biomedical academic papers for further injecting medical knowledge, enhancing its capability in medical domain. Our preliminary evaluations are conducted on three biomedical QA datasets, including PubMedQA, MedMCQA, and USMLE, showing that the our model after finetuning, i.e., PMC-LLaMA, demonstrates better understanding of biomedical domain-specific concepts, thus achieving high performance on QA benchmarks. The model and codes, along with an online demo, are publicly available.

Tabular representation learning has recently gained a lot of attention. However, existing approaches only learn a representation from a single table, and thus ignore the potential to learn from the full structure of relational databases, including neighboring tables that can contain important information for a contextualized representation. Moreover, current models are significantly limited in scale, which prevents that they learn from large databases. In this paper, we thus introduce our vision of relational representation learning, that can not only learn from the full relational structure, but also can scale to larger database sizes that are commonly found in real-world. Moreover, we also discuss opportunities and challenges we see along the way to enable this vision and present initial very promising results. Elevator systems are one kind of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), and as such, test cases are usually complex and long in time. This is mainly because realistic test scenarios are employed (e.g., for testing elevator dispatching algorithms, typically a full day of passengers traveling through a system of elevators is used). However, in such a context, when needing to reproduce a failure, it is of high benefit to provide the minimal test input to the software developers. This way, analyzing and trying to localize the root-cause of the failure is easier and more agile. Delta debugging has been found to be an efficient technique to reduce failure-inducing test inputs. In this paper, we enhance this technique by first monitoring the environment at which the CPS operates as well as its physical states. With the monitored information, we search for stable states of the CPS during the execution of the simulation. In a second step, we use such identified stable states to help the delta debugging algorithm isolate the failure-inducing test inputs more efficiently. We report our experience of applying our approach into an industrial elevator dispatching algorithm. An empirical evaluation carried out with real operational data from a real installation of elevators suggests that the proposed environment-wise delta debugging algorithm is between 1.3 to 1.8 times faster than the traditional delta debugging, while producing a larger reduction in the failure-inducing test inputs. The results provided by the different implemented delta debugging algorithm versions are qualitatively assessed with domain experts. Open-world survival games pose significant challenges for AI algorithms due to their multi-tasking, deep exploration, and goal prioritization requirements. Despite reinforcement learning (RL) being popular for solving games, its high sample complexity limits its effectiveness in complex open-world games like Crafter or Minecraft. We propose a novel approach, SPRING, to read the game's original academic paper and use the knowledge learned to reason and play the game through a large language model (LLM). Prompted with the LaTeX source as game context and a description of the agent's current observation, our SPRING framework employs a directed acyclic graph (DAG) with game-related questions as nodes and dependencies as edges. We identify the optimal action to take in the environment by traversing the DAG and calculating LLM responses for each node in topological order, with the LLM's answer to final node directly translating to environment actions. In our experiments, we study the quality of in-context "reasoning" induced by different forms of prompts under the setting of the Crafter open-world environment. Our experiments suggest that LLMs, when prompted with consistent chain-of-thought, have great potential in completing sophisticated high-level trajectories. Quantitatively, SPRING with GPT-4 outperforms all state-of-the-art RL baselines, trained for 1M steps, without any training. Finally, we show the potential of games as a test bed for LLMs.

The number of published research papers has experienced exponential growth in recent years, which makes it crucial to develop new methods for efficient and versatile information extraction and knowledge discovery. To address this need, we propose a Semantic Knowledge Graph (SKG) that integrates semantic concepts from abstracts and other meta-information to represent the corpus. The SKG can support various semantic queries in academic literature thanks to the high diversity and rich information content stored within. To extract knowledge from unstructured text, we develop a Knowledge Extraction Module that includes a semi-supervised pipeline for entity extraction and entity normalization. We also create an ontology to integrate the concepts with other meta information, enabling us to build the SKG. Furthermore, we design and develop a dataflow system that demonstrates how to conduct various semantic queries flexibly and interactively over the SKG. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we conduct the research based on the visualization literature and provide real-world use cases to show the usefulness of the SKG. In the field of scientometrics, the subject classification system of academic journals holds great importance. Accurate identification and classification of "multidisciplinary" journals are crucial in revealing the scientific structure and evaluating journals. Based on data from the Web of Science database from 2016 to 2020, we calculated the disciplinary diversity of journals using the paper-level subject classification system, then conducted a systematic analysis of JCR multidisciplinary journals. Studies showed that most multidisciplinary journals have high disciplinary diversity, while non-multidisciplinary journals tend to have relatively lower diversity. Some multidisciplinary journals with low disciplinary diversities may misclassify disciplines. In addition, there are inconsistencies in the diversity of journal disciplines at different granularities. Our study also visually analyzed the four types of diversity distribution tendencies of multidisciplinary journals. Moreover, ten potential multidisciplinary journals were found in non-multidisciplinary categories.

Quasi-brittle materials endowed with (statistically) self-similar hierarcical microstructures show distinct failure patterns that deviate from the standard scenario of damage accumulation followed by crack nucleation-and-growth. Here we study the failure of paper sheets with hierarchical slice patterns as well as non-hierarchical and unpatterned reference samples, considering both uncracked samples and samples containing a macroscopic crack. Failure is studied under displacement-controlled tensile loading as well as under creep conditions. Acoustic emission records and surface strain patterns are recorded alongside stress-strain and creep curves. The measurements demonstrate that hierarchical patterning efficiently mitigates against strain localization and crack propagation. In tensile loading, this results in a significantly increased residual strength of cracked samples. Under creep conditions, for a given range of lifetimes hierarchically patterned samples are found to sustain larger creep strains at higher stress levels; their creep curves show unusual behavior characterized by multiple creep rate minima due to the repeated arrest of emergent localization bands.

In this short position paper we highlight our ongoing work on verifiable heterogeneous multi-agent systems and, in particular, the complex (and often non-functional) issues that impact the choice of structure within each agent.

Pair-instability supernovae (PISNe) are explosions of very massive stars that may have played a critical role in the chemical evolution and reionization of the early Universe. In order to quantify their roles, it is required to know the PISN event rate at z > 6. Although Roman Space Telescope has a capability to discover PISNe at z > 6, identifying rare high-redshift PISN candidates among many other transients is challenging. In order to efficiently identify PISN candidates at z > 6, we propose to add sparse F213 observations reaching 26.5 mag (or deeper) every half year in the High Latitude Time Domain Survey. The BDD package Adiar manipulates Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs) in external memory. This enables handling big BDDs, but the performance suffers when dealing with moderate-sized BDDs. This is mostly due to initializing expensive external memory data structures, even if their contents can fit entirely inside internal memory. The contents of these auxiliary data structures always correspond to a graph cut in an input or output BDD. Specifically, these cuts respect the levels of the BDD. We formalise the shape of these cuts and prove sound upper bounds on their maximum size for each BDD operation. We have implemented these upper bounds within Adiar. With these bounds, it can predict whether a faster internal memory variant of the auxiliary data structures can be used. In practice, this improves Adiar's running time across the board. Specifically for the moderate-sized BDDs, this results in an average reduction of the computation time by 86.1% (median of 89.7%). In some cases, the difference is even 99.9\%. Recent work has shown that pairwise interactions may not be sufficient to fully model ecological dynamics in the wild. In this letter, we consider a replicator dynamic that takes both pairwise and triadic interactions into consideration using a rank-three tensor. We study {these} new nonlinear dynamics using a generalized rock-paper-scissors game whose dynamics are well understood in the {standard} replicator sense. We show that the addition of higher-order dynamics leads to the creation of a subcritical Hopf bifurcation and consequently an unstable limit cycle. It is known that this kind of behaviour cannot occur in the pairwise replicator in any three strategy games, showing the effect higher-order interactions can have on the resulting dynamics of the system. Although there are estimated to be 100 million isolated black holes (BHs) in the Milky Way, only one has been found so far, resulting in significant uncertainty about their properties. The Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey provides the only opportunity in the coming decades to grow this catalog by order(s) of magnitude. This can be achieved if 1) Roman's astrometric potential is fully realized in the observation strategy and software pipelines, 2) Roman's observational gaps of the Bulge are minimized, and 3) observations with ground-based facilities are taken of the Bulge to fill in gaps during non-Bulge seasons. A large sample of isolated BHs will enable a broad range of astrophysical questions to be answered, such as massive stellar evolution, origin of gravitational wave sources, supernova physics, and the growth of supermassive BHs, maximizing Roman's scientific return., Comment: 20 pages. We present the call for papers for the BabyLM Challenge: Sample-efficient pretraining on a developmentally plausible corpus. This shared task is intended for participants with an interest in small scale language modeling, human language acquisition, low-resource NLP, and cognitive modeling. In partnership with CoNLL and CMCL, we provide a platform for approaches to pretraining with a limited-size corpus sourced from data inspired by the input to children. The task has three tracks, two of which restrict the training data to pre-released datasets of 10M and 100M words and are dedicated to explorations of approaches such as architectural variations, self-supervised objectives, or curriculum learning. The final track only restricts the amount of text used, allowing innovation in the choice of the data, its domain, and even its modality (i.e., data from sources other than text is welcome). We will release a shared evaluation pipeline which scores models on a variety of benchmarks and tasks, including targeted syntactic evaluations and natural language understanding.

The transient dimensional changes during \textit{hygro}-expansion and \textit{hydro}-expansion of freely and restrained dried, softwood and hardwood sheets and fibers is monitored, to unravel the governing micro-mechanisms occurring during gradual water saturation. The response of individual fibers is measured using a full-field global digital height correlation method, which has been extended to monitor the transient \textit{hydro}-expansion of fibers from dry to fully saturated. The \textit{hygro}- and \textit{hydro}-expansion is larger for freely versus restrained dried and softwood versus hardwood handsheets. The transient sheet-scale \textit{hydro}-expansion reveals a sudden strain and moisture content step. It is postulated that the driving mechanism is the moisture-induced softening of the so-called "dislocated regions" in the fiber's cellulose micro-fibrils, unlocking further fiber swelling. The strain step is negligible for restrained dried handsheets, which is attributed to the "dislocated cellulose regions" being locked in their stretched configuration during restrained drying, which is supported by the single fiber \textit{hydro}-expansion measurements. Finally, an inter-fiber bond model is exploited and adapted to predict the sheet-scale \textit{hygro}-expansion from the fiber level characteristics. The model correctly predicts the qualitative differences between freely versus restrained dried and softwood versus hardwood handsheets, yet, its simplified geometry does not allow for more quantitative predictions of the sheet-scale \textit{hydro}-expansion., Comment: 37 pages; 12 figures; 5 tables

We study the length of $T$-contaminated runs of heads in the well-known coin tossing experiment. A $T$-contaminated run of heads is a sequence of consecutive heads interrupted by $T$ tails. For $T=1$ and $T=2$ we find the asymptotic distribution for the first hitting time of the $T$ contaminated run of heads having length $m$; furthermore, we obtain a limit theorem for the length of the longest $T$-contaminated head run. We prove that the rate of the approximation of our accompanying distribution for the length of the longest $T$-contaminated head run is considerably better than the previous ones. The CHIANTI atomic database provides sets of assessed data used for simulating spectral observations of astrophysical plasmas. This article describes updates that will be released as version~10.1 of the database. A key component of CHIANTI is the provision of ionization and recombination rates that are used to compute the ionization balance of a plasma over a range of temperatures. Parameters for calculating the ionization rates of all stages of ions from H through Zn were compiled and inserted into the CHIANTI database in 2009. These were based on all measurements that were available at the time and supplemented with distorted wave calculations. Since then, there have been a number of new laboratory measurements for ions that produce spectral lines that are commonly observed. Parameters have been fit to these new measurements to provide improved ability to reproduce the ionization cross sections and rate coefficients, and these are added to the database. CHIANTI 10.1 also includes new recombination rates for the phosphorus isoelectronic sequence, and the updated ionization and recombination rates have been used to calculate a new ionization equilibrium file.
