Search

Automatic detection of natural disasters and incidents has become more important as a tool for fast response. There have been many studies to detect incidents using still images and text. However, the number of approaches that exploit temporal information is rather limited. One of the main reasons for this is that a diverse video dataset with various incident types does not exist. To address this need, in this paper we present a video dataset, Video Dataset of Incidents, VIDI, that contains 4,534 video clips corresponding to 43 incident categories. Each incident class has around 100 videos with a duration of ten seconds on average. To increase diversity, the videos have been searched in several languages. To assess the performance of the recent state-of-the-art approaches, Vision Transformer and TimeSformer, as well as to explore the contribution of video-based information for incident classification, we performed benchmark experiments on the VIDI and Incidents Dataset. We have shown that the recent methods improve the incident classification accuracy. We have found that employing video data is very beneficial for the task. By using the video data, the top-1 accuracy is increased to 76.56% from 67.37%, which was obtained using a single frame. VIDI will be made publicly available. A new, meter-wave radio telescope has been built in the North-East of Mauritius, an island in the Indian ocean, at a latitude of -20.14 deg. The Mauritius Radio Telescope (MRT) is a Fourier Synthesis T-shaped array, consisting of a 2048 m long East-West arm and a 880 m long South arm. In the East-West arm 1024 fixed helices are arranged in 32 groups and in the South arm 16 trolleys, with four helices on each, which move on a rail are used. A 512 channel digital complex correlation receiver is used to measure the visibility function. At least 60 days of observing are required for obtaining the visibilities up to 880 m spacing. The Fourier transform of the calibrated visibilities produces a map of the area of the sky under observation with a synthesized beam width 4'X 4.6'sec(dec+20.14) at 151.5 MHz. The primary objective of the telescope is to produce a sky survey in the declination range -70 deg to -10 deg with a point source sensitivity of about 200 mJy (3-sigma level). This will be the southern sky equivalent of the Cambridge 6C survey. Semilinear clannish algebras have been recently introduced by the first author and Crawley-Boevey as a generalization of Crawley-Boevey's clannish algebras. The breaking of orbital degeneracy on a transition metal cation and the resulting unequal electronic occupations of these orbitals provide a powerful lever over electron density and spin ordering in metal oxides. Here, we show how to dynamically modulate the orbital populations on Mn atoms at ferroelectric/manganite interfaces by switching the ferroelectric polarization. The change in orbital occupation can be as large as 10\%, greatly exceeding that of bulk manganites. This flippable orbital splitting is in large part controlled by the propagation of ferroelectric polar displacements into the interfacial region, a structural motif absent in the bulk and unique to the interface. In this paper we test the random walk hypothesis on the high frequency dataset of the bid--ask Deutschemark/US dollar exchange rate quotes registered by the inter-bank Reuters network over the period October 1, 1992 to September 30, 1993. Then we propose a stochastic model for price variation which is able to describe some important features of the exchange market behavior. Besides the usual correlation analysis we have verified the validity of this model by means of other approaches inspired by information theory . Recently, learned video compression has drawn lots of attention and show a rapid development trend with promising results. However, the previous works still suffer from some criticial issues and have a performance gap with traditional compression standards in terms of widely used PSNR metric. In this paper, we propose several techniques to effectively improve the performance. First, to address the problem of accumulative error, we introduce a conditional-I-frame as the first frame in the GoP, which stabilizes the reconstructed quality and saves the bit-rate. Second, to efficiently improve the accuracy of inter prediction without increasing the complexity of decoder, we propose a pixel-to-feature motion prediction method at encoder side that helps us to obtain high-quality motion information. Third, we propose a probability-based entropy skipping method, which not only brings performance gain, but also greatly reduces the runtime of entropy coding. With these powerful techniques, this paper proposes AlphaVC, a high-performance and efficient learned video compression scheme. To the best of our knowledge, AlphaVC is the first E2E AI codec that exceeds the latest compression standard VVC on all common test datasets for both PSNR (-28.2% BD-rate saving) and MSSSIM (-52.2% BD-rate saving), and has very fast encoding (0.001x VVC) and decoding (1.69x VVC) speeds., Comment: ECCV2022

This paper proposes a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based method that learns traffic as images and predicts large-scale, network-wide traffic speed with a high accuracy. Spatiotemporal traffic dynamics are converted to images describing the time and space relations of traffic flow via a two-dimensional time-space matrix. A CNN is applied to the image following two consecutive steps: abstract traffic feature extraction and network-wide traffic speed prediction. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated by taking two real-world transportation networks, the second ring road and north-east transportation network in Beijing, as examples, and comparing the method with four prevailing algorithms, namely, ordinary least squares, k-nearest neighbors, artificial neural network, and random forest, and three deep learning architectures, namely, stacked autoencoder, recurrent neural network, and long-short-term memory network. The results show that the proposed method outperforms other algorithms by an average accuracy improvement of 42.91% within an acceptable execution time. The CNN can train the model in a reasonable time and, thus, is suitable for large-scale transportation networks.

Should projects of space experiments on ultra-high energy cosmic rays be supported, whatever AUGER results will turn out to be? We claim that this is indeed the case. It is now widely admitted that models of Lorentz symmetry violation (LSV) at the Planck scale based on power-like extrapolations down to cosmic-ray scales and able to account for a possible absence of the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff exist and require the existence of a privileged inertial rest frame, as we proposed in 1997 (paper physics/9704017 and subsequent work). The favoured energy dependence of the LSV parameter will then be quadratic rather than linear. This approach (weak doubly special relativity, WDSR) is different from the version of doubly special relativity defended by several authors, where the laws of Physics are required to be exactly identical in all inertial reference frames (strong doubly special relativity, SDSR). To date, WDSR patterns based on a deformation of special relativity with a privileged (vacuum) rest frame are the only clear and consistent candidate to explain a possible absence of the GZK cutoff invoking deviations from standard relativity. It is also to be emphasized, as in hep-ph/0510361, that the usual hypothesis of a power-like dependence of the LSV effective parameters not being altered by any intermediate energy scale is not the only possible one. This paper presents an adaptive reference governor (RG) framework for a linear system with matched nonlinear uncertainties that can depend on both time and states, subject to both state and input constraints. The proposed framework leverages an L1 adaptive controller (L1AC) that estimates and compensates for the uncertainties, and provides guaranteed transient performance, in terms of uniform bounds on the error between actual states and inputs and those of a nominal (i.e., uncertainty-free) system. The uniform performance bounds provided by the L1AC are used to tighten the pre-specified state and control constraints. A reference governor is then designed for the nominal system using the tightened constraints, and guarantees robust constraint satisfaction. Moreover, the conservatism introduced by the constraint tightening can be systematically reduced by tuning some parameters within the L1AC. Compared with existing solutions, the proposed adaptive RG framework can potentially yield less conservative results for constraint enforcement due to the removal of uncertainty propagation along a prediction horizon, and improved tracking performance due to the inherent uncertainty compensation mechanism. [This paper is part of the Focused Collection on Quantitative Methods in PER: A Critical Examination.] Physics education researchers (PER) commonly use complete-case analysis to address missing data. For complete-case analysis, researchers discard all data from any student who is missing any data. Despite its frequent use, no PER article we reviewed that used complete-case analysis provided evidence that the data met the assumption of missing completely at random necessary to ensure accurate results. Not meeting this assumption raises the possibility that prior studies have reported biased results with inflated gains that may obscure differences across courses. To test this possibility, we compared the accuracy of complete-case analysis and multiple imputation (MI) using simulated data. We simulated the data based on prior studies such that students who earned higher grades participated at higher rates, which made the data missing at random. PER studies seldom use MI, but MI uses all available data, has less stringent assumptions, and is more accurate and more statistically powerful than complete-case analysis. Results indicated that complete-case analysis introduced more bias than MI and this bias was large enough to obscure differences between student populations or between courses. We recommend that the PER community adopt the use of MI for handling missing data to improve the accuracy in research studies.

In this paper we study the analytic torsion of an odd-dimensional manifold with isolated conical singularities. First we show that the analytic torsion is invariant under deformations of the metric which are of higher order near the singularities. Then we identify the metric anomaly of analytic torsion for a bounded generalized cone at its regular boundary in terms of spectral information of the cross-section. In view of previous computations of analytic torsion on cones, this leads to a detailed geometric identification of the topological and spectral contributions to analytic torsion, arising from the conical singularity. In this paper we consider the problem of quickly detecting changes in an intermittent signal that can (repeatedly) switch between a normal and an anomalous state. We pose this intermittent signal detection problem as an optimal stopping problem and establish a quickest intermittent signal detection (ISD) rule with a threshold structure. We develop bounds to characterise the performance of our ISD rule and establish a new filter for estimating its detection delays. Finally, we examine the performance of our ISD rule in both a simulation study and an important vision based aircraft detection application where the ISD rule demonstrates improvements in detection range and false alarm rates relative to the current state of the art aircraft detection techniques.

Cloud computing is drastically growing technology which provides an on-demand software, hardware, infrastructure and data storage as services. This technology is used worldwide to improve the business infrastructure and performance. At present, cloud password authentication can be done in several ways, such as, textual password, graphical and 3D password. In this paper, we are proposing the strong password generation technique by considering multiple input parameters of cloud paradigm referred as a multidimensional password. This paper presents the multidimensional password generation technique along with architecture, sequence diagrams, algorithms and typical user interfaces. In this paper, we propose a stochastic version of the Hawking-Penrose black hole model. We describe the dynamics of the stochastic model as a continuous-time Markov jump process of quanta out and in the black hole. The average of the random process satisfies the deterministic picture accepted in the physical literature. Assuming that the number of quanta is finite the proposed Markov process consists of two components: the number of the quanta in the black hole and the amount of the quanta outside. The stochastic representation allows us to apply large deviation theory to study the asymptotics of probabilities of rare events when the number of quanta grows to infinity. The theory provides explicitly the rate functional for the process. Its infimum over the set of all trajectories leading to a large emission event is attained on the most probable trajectory. This trajectory is a solution of a highly nonlinear Hamiltonian system of equations. This paper considers the problem of privacy preservation against passive internal and external malicious agents in the continuous-time Laplacian average consensus algorithm over strongly connected and weight-balanced digraphs. For this problem, we evaluate the effectiveness of use of additive perturbation signals as a privacy preservation measure against malicious agents that know the graph topology. Our results include (a) identifying the necessary and sufficient conditions on admissible additive perturbation signals that do not perturb the convergence point of the algorithm from the average of initial values of the agents; (b) obtaining the necessary and sufficient condition on the knowledge set of a malicious agent that enables it to identify the initial value of another agent; (c) designing observers that internal and external malicious agents can use to identify the initial conditions of another agent when their knowledge set on that agent enables them to do so. We demonstrate our results through a numerical example.

The (third-order in time) JMGT equation \cite{Jordan2,HCP} is a nonlinear (quasi-linear) Partial Differential Equation (PDE) model introduced to describe a nonlinear propagation of sound in an acoustic medium. The important feature is that the model avoids the infinite speed of propagation paradox associated with a classical second order in time equation referred to as Westervelt equation. Replacing Fourier's law by Maxwell-Cattaneo's law gives rise to the third order in time derivative scaled by a small parameter $\tau >0$, the latter represents the thermal relaxation time parameter and is intrinsic to the medium where the dynamics occur. In this paper we provide an asymptotic analysis of the third order model when $\tau \rightarrow 0 $. It is shown that the corresponding solutions converge {\it in a strong topology of the phase space } to a limit which is the solution of Westervelt equation. In addition, rate of convergence is provided for solutions displaying higher order regularity. This addresses an open question raised in \cite{kaltev2}, where a related JMGT equation has been studied and {\it weak star } convergence of the solutions when $\tau \rightarrow 0$ has been established. Thus, our main contribution is showing {\it strong convergence on infinite time horizon,} along with related rates of convergence valid on a finite time horizon. The key to unlocking the difficulty owns to a tight control and propagation of the "smallness" of the initial data in carrying the estimates at three different topological levels. The rate of convergence allows one then to estimate the relaxation time needed for the signal to reach the target. The interest in studying this type of problems is motivated by a large array of applications arising in engineering and medical sciences.

This paper analyzes distributed control protocols for first- and second-order networked dynamical systems. We propose a class of nonlinear consensus controllers where the input of each agent can be written as a product of a nonlinear gain, and a sum of nonlinear interaction functions. By using integral Lyapunov functions, we prove the stability of the proposed control protocols, and explicitly characterize the equilibrium set. We also propose a distributed proportional-integral (PI) controller for networked dynamical systems. The PI controllers successfully attenuate constant disturbances in the network. We prove that agents with single-integrator dynamics are stable for any integral gain, and give an explicit tight upper bound on the integral gain for when the system is stable for agents with double-integrator dynamics. As the cornerstone of modern portfolio theory, Markowitz's mean-variance optimization is considered a major model adopted in portfolio management. However, due to the difficulty of estimating its parameters, it cannot be applied to all periods. In some cases, naive strategies such as Equally-weighted and Value-weighted portfolios can even get better performance. Under these circumstances, we can use multiple classic strategies as multiple strategic arms in multi-armed bandit to naturally establish a connection with the portfolio selection problem. This can also help to maximize the rewards in the bandit algorithm by the trade-off between exploration and exploitation. In this paper, we present a portfolio bandit strategy through Thompson sampling which aims to make online portfolio choices by effectively exploiting the performances among multiple arms. Also, by constructing multiple strategic arms, we can obtain the optimal investment portfolio to adapt different investment periods. Moreover, we devise a novel reward function based on users' different investment risk preferences, which can be adaptive to various investment styles. Recently spiking neural networks (SNNs), the third-generation of neural networks has shown remarkable capabilities of energy-efficient computing, which is a promising alternative for deep neural networks (DNNs) with high energy consumption. SNNs have reached competitive results compared to DNNs in relatively simple tasks and small datasets such as image classification and MNIST/CIFAR, while few studies on more challenging vision tasks on complex datasets. In this paper, we focus on extending deep SNNs to object tracking, a more advanced vision task with embedded applications and energy-saving requirements, and present a spike-based Siamese network called SiamSNN. Specifically, we propose an optimized hybrid similarity estimation method to exploit temporal information in the SNNs, and introduce a novel two-status coding scheme to optimize the temporal distribution of output spike trains for further improvements. SiamSNN is the first deep SNN tracker that achieves short latency and low precision loss on the visual object tracking benchmarks OTB2013/2015, VOT2016/2018, and GOT-10k. The CompModels package for R provides a suite of computer model test functions that can be used for computer model prediction/emulation, uncertainty quantification, and calibration, but in particular, the sequential optimization of computer models. The package is a mix of real-world physics problems, known mathematical functions, and black-box functions that have been converted into computer models with the goal of Bayesian (i.e., sequential) optimization in mind. Likewise, the package contains computer models that represent either the constrained or unconstrained optimization case, each with varying levels of difficulty. In this paper, we illustrate the use of the package with both real-world examples and black-box functions by solving constrained optimization problems via Bayesian optimization. Ultimately, the package is shown to provide users with a source of computer model test functions that are reproducible, shareable, and that can be used for benchmarking of novel optimization methods.

In this paper is presented an approach to achieving on-line modification of nominal biped gait without recomputing entire dynamics when steady motion is performed. Straight, dynamically balanced walk was used as a nominal gait, and applied modifications were speed-up and slow-down walk and turning left and right. It is shown that the disturbances caused by these modifications jeopardize dynamic stability, but they can be simply compensated to enable walk continuation.

Zero-shot learning relies on semantic class representations such as hand-engineered attributes or learned embeddings to predict classes without any labeled examples. We propose to learn class representations by embedding nodes from common sense knowledge graphs in a vector space. Common sense knowledge graphs are an untapped source of explicit high-level knowledge that requires little human effort to apply to a range of tasks. To capture the knowledge in the graph, we introduce ZSL-KG, a general-purpose framework with a novel transformer graph convolutional network (TrGCN) for generating class representations. Our proposed TrGCN architecture computes non-linear combinations of node neighbourhoods. This note serves as a short and reader-friendly introduction to twisted Brin-Thompson groups, which were recently constructed by Belk and the author to provide a family of simple groups with a variety of interesting properties. Most notably, twisted Brin-Thompson groups can be used to show that every finitely generated group quasi-isometrically embeds as a subgroup of a finitely generated simple group. Another important application is a concrete construction of a family of simple groups with arbitrary finiteness length. In addition to giving a concise introduction to the groups and these applications, we also prove here a strengthening of one of the results from the original paper. Namely, we prove that any finitely presented group acting faithfully and oligomorphically on a set, with finitely generated stabilizers of finite subsets, embeds in a finitely presented simple group. We believe this could potentially lead to future progress on resolving the Boone-Higman Conjecture for certain groups., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

Recognizing written domain numeric utterances (e.g. I need $1.25.) can be challenging for ASR systems, particularly when numeric sequences are not seen during training. This out-of-vocabulary (OOV) issue is addressed in conventional ASR systems by training part of the model on spoken domain utterances (e.g. I need one dollar and twenty five cents.), for which numeric sequences are composed of in-vocabulary numbers, and then using an FST verbalizer to denormalize the result. Unfortunately, conventional ASR models are not suitable for the low memory setting of on-device speech recognition. E2E models such as RNN-T are attractive for on-device ASR, as they fold the AM, PM and LM of a conventional model into one neural network. However, in the on-device setting the large memory footprint of an FST denormer makes spoken domain training more difficult. In this paper, we investigate techniques to improve E2E model performance on numeric data. We find that using a text-to-speech system to generate additional numeric training data, as well as using a small-footprint neural network to perform spoken-to-written domain denorming, yields improvement in several numeric classes. In the case of the longest numeric sequences, we see reduction of WER by up to a factor of 8.

Keyphrases are useful for a variety of purposes, including summarizing, indexing, labeling, categorizing, clustering, highlighting, browsing, and searching. The task of automatic keyphrase extraction is to select keyphrases from within the text of a given document. Automatic keyphrase extraction makes it feasible to generate keyphrases for the huge number of documents that do not have manually assigned keyphrases. Good performance on this task has been obtained by approaching it as a supervised learning problem. An input document is treated as a set of candidate phrases that must be classified as either keyphrases or non-keyphrases. To classify a candidate phrase as a keyphrase, the most important features (attributes) appear to be the frequency and location of the candidate phrase in the document. Recent work has demonstrated that it is also useful to know the frequency of the candidate phrase as a manually assigned keyphrase for other documents in the same domain as the given document (e.g., the domain of computer science). Unfortunately, this keyphrase-frequency feature is domain-specific (the learning process must be repeated for each new domain) and training-intensive (good performance requires a relatively large number of training documents in the given domain, with manually assigned keyphrases). The aim of the work described here is to remove these limitations. In this paper, I introduce new features that are derived by mining lexical knowledge from a very large collection of unlabeled data, consisting of approximately 350 million Web pages without manually assigned keyphrases. We outline here the next generation of cluster-finding algorithms. We show how advances in Computer Science and Statistics have helped develop robust, fast algorithms for finding clusters of galaxies in large multi-dimensional astronomical databases like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Specifically, this paper presents four new advances: (1) A new semi-parametric algorithm - nicknamed ``C4'' - for jointly finding clusters of galaxies in the SDSS and ROSAT All-Sky Survey databases; (2) The introduction of the False Discovery Rate into Astronomy; (3) The role of kernel shape in optimizing cluster detection; (4) A new determination of the X-ray Cluster Luminosity Function which has bearing on the existence of a ``deficit'' of high redshift, high luminosity clusters. Research shows that various social media platforms on Internet such as Twitter, Tumblr (micro-blogging websites), Facebook (a popular social networking website), YouTube (largest video sharing and hosting website), Blogs and discussion forums are being misused by extremist groups for spreading their beliefs and ideologies, promoting radicalization, recruiting members and creating online virtual communities sharing a common agenda. Popular microblogging websites such as Twitter are being used as a real-time platform for information sharing and communication during planning and mobilization if civil unrest related events. Applying social media intelligence for predicting and identifying online radicalization and civil unrest oriented threats is an area that has attracted several researchers' attention over past 10 years. There are several algorithms, techniques and tools that have been proposed in existing literature to counter and combat cyber-extremism and predicting protest related events in much advance. In this paper, we conduct a literature review of all these existing techniques and do a comprehensive analysis to understand state-of-the-art, trends and research gaps. We present a one class classification approach to collect scholarly articles targeting the topics and subtopics of our research scope. Falling coffee filters are a common object of study in introductory physics laboratory classes. They are usually used to demonstrate the terminal velocity, and determine how the drag force depends on this velocity. However they can also be used to demonstrate other ways that the air affects the motion of the falling coffee filter. In particular, a qualitatively different fluid force acts during the initial acceleration from rest, and causes this acceleration to be much less than the acceleration of an object in vacuum. This fluid force, commonly known as the `added mass', is easily observable with coffee filters using either a sonic motion sensor or video analysis. Here the added mass is experimentally measured for a falling coffee filter. In addition, the theoretical value for the added mass of a coffee filter moving through an ideal fluid is calculated. The two values agree relatively well. Finally, it is shown how the added mass is relevant to experiments that only measure the terminal velocity., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures. This paper proposes a traffic control scheme to alleviate traffic congestion in a network of interconnected signaled lanes/roads. The proposed scheme is emergency vehicle-centered, meaning that it provides an efficient and timely routing for emergency vehicles. In the proposed scheme, model predictive control is utilized to control inlet traffic flows by means of network gates, as well as configuration of traffic lights across the network. Two schemes are considered in this paper: i) centralized; and ii) decentralized. In the centralized scheme, a central unit controls the entire network. This scheme provides the optimal solution, even though it might not fulfil real-time computation requirements for large networks. In the decentralized scheme, each intersection has its own control unit, which sends local information to an aggregator. The main responsibility of this aggregator is to receive local information from all control units across the network as well as the emergency vehicle, to augment the received information, and to share it with the control units. Since the decision-making in decentralized scheme is local and the aggregator should fulfil the above-mentioned tasks during a traffic cycle which takes a long period of time, the decentralized scheme is suitable for large networks, even though it may provide a sub-optimal solution. Extensive simulation studies are carried out to validate the proposed schemes, and assess their performance. Notably, the obtained results reveal that traveling times of emergency vehicles can be reduced up to ~50% by using the centralized scheme and up to ~30% by using the decentralized scheme, without causing congestion in other lanes.

Decades of research have been invested in making computer programs for playing games such as Chess and Go. This paper focuses on a new game, Tetris Link, a board game that is still lacking any scientific analysis. Tetris Link has a large branching factor, hampering a traditional heuristic planning approach. We explore heuristic planning and two other approaches: Reinforcement Learning, Monte Carlo tree search. We document our approach and report on their relative performance in a tournament. Curiously, the heuristic approach is stronger than the planning/learning approaches. However, experienced human players easily win the majority of the matches against the heuristic planning AIs. We, therefore, surmise that Tetris Link is more difficult than expected. We offer our findings to the community as a challenge to improve upon.

The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity reg(X) of a projective scheme X was introduced by Mumford by generalizing ideas of Castelnuovo. The interest in this concept stems partly from the fact that X is m-regular if and only if for every p \geq 0 the minimal generators of the p-th syzygy module of the defining ideal I of X occur in degree \leq m + p. There are some bounds in the case that X is a locally Cohen-Macaulay scheme. The aim of this paper is to extend and improve these results for so-called (k,r)-Buchsbaum schemes. In many scientific fields, such as economics and neuroscience, we are often faced with nonstationary time series, and concerned with both finding causal relations and forecasting the values of variables of interest, both of which are particularly challenging in such nonstationary environments. In this paper, we study causal discovery and forecasting for nonstationary time series. By exploiting a particular type of state-space model to represent the processes, we show that nonstationarity helps to identify causal structure and that forecasting naturally benefits from learned causal knowledge. Specifically, we allow changes in both causal strengths and noise variances in the nonlinear state-space models, which, interestingly, renders both the causal structure and model parameters identifiable. Given the causal model, we treat forecasting as a problem in Bayesian inference in the causal model, which exploits the time-varying property of the data and adapts to new observations in a principled manner. Experimental results on synthetic and real-world data sets demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed methods.

In recent years there has been a great deal of focus on a globe-spanning quantum network, including linked satellites for applications ranging from quantum key distribution to distributed sensors and clocks. In many of these schemes, relativistic transformations may have deleterious effects on the purity of the distributed entangled pairs. This becomes particularly important for the application of distributed clocks. In this paper, we have developed a Lorentz invariant entanglement distribution protocol that completely removes the effects due to the relative motions of the satellites.

In a recent experiment [M. Feld et al., Nature 480, 75 (2011); B. Froehlich et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109,130403 (2012)], a pairing gap was detected in a two-dimensional (2D) Fermi gas with attractive interaction at temperatures where superfluidity does not occur. The question remains open as to whether this gap is a pseudogap phenomenon or is due to a molecular state. In this paper, by using a t-matrix approach, we reproduce quite well the experimental data for a 2D Fermi gas, and set the boundary between the pseudogap and molecular regimes. We also show that pseudogap phenomena occurring in 2D and 3D can be related through a variable spanning the BCS-BEC crossover in a universal way., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures; final version

This is a semi-survey paper, where we start by advertising Tits' synthetic construction from \cite{Tits}, of the hyperbolic plane $H^2(Cay)$ over the Cayley numbers $Cay$, and of its automorphism group which is the exceptional simple Lie group $G=F_{4(-20)}$. Let $G=KAN$ be the Iwasawa decomposition. Our contributions are: a) Writing down explicitly the action of $N$ on $H^2(Cay)$ in Tits'model, facing the lack of associativity of $Cay$. b) If $MAN$ denotes the minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$, characterizing $M$ geometrically.

In recent years, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have become the standard class of deep neural network for image processing, classification and segmentation tasks. However, the large strides in accuracy obtained by CNNs have been derived from increasing the complexity of network topologies, which incurs sizeable performance and energy penalties in the training and inference of CNNs. Many recent works have validated the effectiveness of parameter quantization, which consists in reducing the bit width of the network's parameters, to enable the attainment of considerable performance and energy efficiency gains without significantly compromising accuracy. However, it is difficult to compare the relative effectiveness of different quantization methods. To address this problem, we introduce RedBit, an open-source framework that provides a transparent, extensible and easy-to-use interface to evaluate the effectiveness of different algorithms and parameter configurations on network accuracy. We use RedBit to perform a comprehensive survey of five state-of-the-art quantization methods applied to the MNIST, CIFAR-10 and ImageNet datasets. We evaluate a total of 2300 individual bit width combinations, independently tuning the width of the network's weight and input activation parameters, from 32 bits down to 1 bit (e.g., 8/8, 2/2, 1/32, 1/1, for weights/activations). Upwards of 20000 hours of computing time in a pool of state-of-the-art GPUs were used to generate all the results in this paper. For 1-bit quantization, the accuracy losses for the MNIST, CIFAR-10 and ImageNet datasets range between [0.26%, 0.79%], [9.74%, 32.96%] and [10.86%, 47.36%] top-1, respectively. In this paper, we are tackling the weakly-supervised referring expression grounding task, for the localization of a referent object in an image according to a query sentence, where the mapping between image regions and queries are not available during the training stage. In traditional methods, an object region that best matches the referring expression is picked out, and then the query sentence is reconstructed from the selected region, where the reconstruction difference serves as the loss for back-propagation. The existing methods, however, conduct both the matching and the reconstruction approximately as they ignore the fact that the matching correctness is unknown. To overcome this limitation, a discriminative triad is designed here as the basis to the solution, through which a query can be converted into one or multiple discriminative triads in a very scalable way. Based on the discriminative triad, we further propose the triad-level matching and reconstruction modules which are lightweight yet effective for the weakly-supervised training, making it three times lighter and faster than the previous state-of-the-art methods. One important merit of our work is its superior performance despite the simple and neat design. Specifically, the proposed method achieves a new state-of-the-art accuracy when evaluated on RefCOCO (39.21%), RefCOCO+ (39.18%) and RefCOCOg (43.24%) datasets, that is 4.17%, 4.08% and 7.8% higher than the previous one, respectively., Comment: TPAMI

In this paper we point out a previously unnoticed anticorrelation between the observed abundance ratio [X/Zn] (where Zn is assumed to be undepleted and X stands for the refractories Fe, Cr and Ni) and metal column density ([Zn/H]+log(N{HI})) in DLAs. We suggest that this trend is an unambiguous sign of dust depletion, since metal column density is a measure of the amount of dust along the line of sight. Assuming that DLAs are (proto-)galactic disks and using detailed chemical evolution models with metallicity dependent yields we study chemical evolution and dust depletion patterns for alpha and iron-peak elements in DLAs. When observational constraints on the metal column density of DLAs are taken into account (as suggested in Boisse et al. 1998) we find that our models reproduce fairly well the observed mild redshift evolution of the abundances of 8 elements (Al, Si, S, Cr, Mn, Fe, Zn and Ni) as well as the observed scatter at a given redshift. By considering the aforementioned dependence of abundance ratios on metal column density, we further explore the general dust depletion pattern in DLAs, comparing to our model results and to a solar reference pattern. We suggest that further measurements of the key elements, i.e. Zn, S and Mn, will help to gain more insight into the nature of DLAs. Post-processing immunity is a fundamental property of differential privacy: it enables arbitrary data-independent transformations to differentially private outputs without affecting their privacy guarantees. Post-processing is routinely applied in data-release applications, including census data, which are then used to make allocations with substantial societal impacts. This paper shows that post-processing causes disparate impacts on individuals or groups and analyzes two critical settings: the release of differentially private datasets and the use of such private datasets for downstream decisions, such as the allocation of funds informed by US Census data. In the first setting, the paper proposes tight bounds on the unfairness for traditional post-processing mechanisms, giving a unique tool to decision makers to quantify the disparate impacts introduced by their release. In the second setting, this paper proposes a novel post-processing mechanism that is (approximately) optimal under different fairness metrics, either reducing fairness issues substantially or reducing the cost of privacy. The theoretical analysis is complemented with numerical simulations on Census data.

In this paper, we introduce the notion of binomial edge ideals of a clutter and obtain results similar to those obtained for graphs by Rauf \& Rinaldo in \cite{raufrin}. We also answer a question posed in their paper.

The classical EMD algorithm has been used extensively in the literature to decompose signals that contain nonlinear waves. However when a signal contain two or more frequencies that are close to one another the decomposition might fail. In this paper we propose a new formulation of this algorithm which is based on the zero crossings of the signal and show that it performs well even when the classical algorithm fail. We address also the filtering properties and convergence rate of the new algorithm versus the classical EMD algorithm. These properties are compared then to those of the principal component algorithm (PCA). We study a spectral initialization method that serves a key role in recent work on estimating signals in nonconvex settings. Previous analysis of this method focuses on the phase retrieval problem and provides only performance bounds. In this paper, we consider arbitrary generalized linear sensing models and present a precise asymptotic characterization of the performance of the method in the high-dimensional limit. Our analysis also reveals a phase transition phenomenon that depends on the ratio between the number of samples and the signal dimension. When the ratio is below a minimum threshold, the estimates given by the spectral method are no better than random guesses drawn from a uniform distribution on the hypersphere, thus carrying no information; above a maximum threshold, the estimates become increasingly aligned with the target signal. The computational complexity of the method, as measured by the spectral gap, is also markedly different in the two phases. Worked examples and numerical results are provided to illustrate and verify the analytical predictions. In particular, simulations show that our asymptotic formulas provide accurate predictions for the actual performance of the spectral method even at moderate signal dimensions.

Multilevel methods are among the most efficient numerical methods for solving large-scale linear systems that arise from discretized partial differential equations. The fundamental module of such methods is a two-level procedure, which consists of compatible relaxation and coarse-level correction. Regarding two-level convergence theory, most previous works focus on the case of exact (Galerkin) coarse solver. In practice, however, it is often too costly to solve the Galerkin coarse-level system exactly when its size is relatively large. Compared with the exact case, the convergence theory of inexact two-level methods is of more practical significance, while it is still less developed in the literature, especially when nonlinear coarse solvers are used. In this paper, we establish a general framework for analyzing the convergence of inexact two-level methods, in which the coarse-level system is solved approximately by an inner iterative procedure. The framework allows us to use various (linear, nonlinear, deterministic, randomized, or hybrid) solvers in the inner iterations, as long as the corresponding accuracy estimates are available.

Nowadays, malware and malware incidents are increasing daily, even with various antivirus systems and malware detection or classification methodologies. Machine learning techniques have been the main focus of the security experts to detect malware and determine their families. Many static, dynamic, and hybrid techniques have been presented for that purpose. In this study, the static analysis technique has been applied to malware samples to extract API calls, which is one of the most used features in machine/deep learning models as it represents the behavior of malware samples. Since the rapid increase and continuous evolution of malware affect the detection capacity of antivirus scanners, recent and updated datasets of malicious software became necessary to overcome this drawback. This paper introduces two new datasets: One with 14,616 samples obtained and compiled from VirusShare and one with 9,795 samples from VirusSample. In addition, benchmark results based on static API calls of malware samples are presented using several machine and deep learning models on these datasets. In the world of the Internet, Web Servers such as Apache and Internet Information Server (IIS) were developed to exchange information among client computers having different Operation System. They have only the function of displaying static information such as HTML files and image files into the Web Browser. However, when the information is updated, the administrator updates it by manual operation. In some cases, because it is necessary to update several places about the same information, the work load becomes high than it is assume and update error and update omission may occur. These problems were solved by use of a Common Gateway Interface (CGI) program such as a bulletin board system and a Blog system. However, these programs opened to Internet have often no user authentication mechanism and no access control mechanism. That is, they have the problem that user can access it freely only by getting the URL and inputting it to a Web Browser. Therefore, in this paper, we show a method to add the user authentication and access control mechanism for them. It is called virtual use method of CGI and is realized in the case of introducing the Destination Addressing Control System (DACS) Scheme, which is a kind of Policy Based Network Management Scheme (PBNM).
