We study generalised rock-paper-scissors models with an arbitrary odd number N \geq 5 of species, among which n are weak, with 2 \leq n \leq (N-1)/2. Because of the species' weakness, the probability of individuals conquering territory in the cyclic spatial game is low. Running stochastic simulations, we study the role of unevenness in the rock-paper-scissors game in spatial patterns and population dynamics, considering diverse models where the weak species are in different positions in the cyclic game order. Studying systems with five and seven species, we discover that the individuals' spatial organisation arising from the pattern formation process determines the stability of the cyclic game with multiple weak species. Our outcomes show that the presence of species unbalances the spatial distribution of organisms of the same species bringing consequences on territorial dominance, with the predominant species being determined by the position in the cyclic game order. Our simulations elucidate that, in general, the further apart the regions inhabited by different weak species are, the less the coexistence between the species is jeopardised. We show that if multiple weak species occupy adjacent spatial domains, the unevenness in the cyclic game is reinforced, maximising the chances of biodiversity loss. We provide a detailed proof of Proposition 3.1 in the paper titled ``Backstepping control of a class of space-time-varying linear parabolic PDEs via time invariant kernel functions''. In the paper titled ``Backstepping control of a class of space-time-varying linear parabolic PDEs via time invariant kernel functions'', we addressed the problem of exponential stabilization and continuous dependence of solutions on initial data in different norms for a class of $1$-D linear parabolic PDEs with space-time-varying coefficients under backstepping boundary control. In order to stabilize the system without involving a Gevrey-like condition or the event-triggered scheme, a boundary feedback controller was designed via a time invariant kernel function. By using the approximative Lyapunov method, the exponential stability of the closed-loop system was established in the spatial $L^{p}$-norm and $W^{1,p}$-norm, respectively, whenever $p\in [1, +\infty]$. Following a suggestion in a footnote of the paper \cite {Fa} by Fano, we give a direct proof of the fact that one of the two Fano threefolds of maximal degree 72 in $\p^{38}$ is isomorphic to the anticanonically embedded weighted projective space $\p(1,1,4,6)$.

This erratum highlights a very serious error in a paper published by SIAM Review in 2011. The error is in Section 6.2 of [1]. It is very important to notify this error because of the following two reasons: (i) [1] is one of the most cited contributions in the field of identifiability of viral dynamics models, and (ii)the error is relevant because, as a result of it, a very popular viral model (perhaps the most popular in the field of HIV dynamics) has been classified as identifiable. In contrast, three of its parameters are not identifiable, even locally. This erratum first proves the non uniqueness of the three unidentifiable parameters by exhibiting infinitely many distinct but indistinguishable values of them. The non uniqueness is even local. Then, this erratum details the error made by the authors of [1] which produced the claimed (but false) local identifiability of all the model parameters., Comment: SIAM review refuses to publish this erratum. This is in my opinion a very wrong decision which significantly deteriorates the rank of this journal. Or, even worse, this decision highlights an unfortunately low rank of this journal

The Comments are devoted to the paper ``Solutions of Multitime Reaction-Diffusion PDE'' (Mathematics, vol. 10 (2022), 3623), in which main results are misleading and can be derived in a simple way from those obtained earlier. Moreover, it is shown that the exact solution derived therein are simple generalizations of the known solutions and are easily obtainable by the method of differential constrains. Recent work has shown that pairwise interactions may not be sufficient to fully model ecological dynamics in the wild. In this letter, we consider a replicator dynamic that takes both pairwise and triadic interactions into consideration using a rank-three tensor. We study {these} new nonlinear dynamics using a generalized rock-paper-scissors game whose dynamics are well understood in the {standard} replicator sense. We show that the addition of higher-order dynamics leads to the creation of a subcritical Hopf bifurcation and consequently an unstable limit cycle. It is known that this kind of behaviour cannot occur in the pairwise replicator in any three strategy games, showing the effect higher-order interactions can have on the resulting dynamics of the system. We provide a simple method to recognize classical orthogonal polynomials on lattices defined only by their coefficients of the three term recurrence relation.

We show that if a finitely generated prime algebra $\Delta$ is a finitely generated maximal Cohen-Macaulay module over its centre $Z$, and has global dimension equal to $\dim Z$, then the pair given by its centre and ramification divisor is Kawamata log terminal.

We study the length of $T$-contaminated runs of heads in the well-known coin tossing experiment. A $T$-contaminated run of heads is a sequence of consecutive heads interrupted by $T$ tails. For $T=1$ and $T=2$ we find the asymptotic distribution for the first hitting time of the $T$ contaminated run of heads having length $m$; furthermore, we obtain a limit theorem for the length of the longest $T$-contaminated head run. We prove that the rate of the approximation of our accompanying distribution for the length of the longest $T$-contaminated head run is considerably better than the previous ones. We prove a second order identity for the Kirchhoff equation which yields, in particular, a simple and direct proof of Pokhozhaev's second order conservation law when the nonlinearity has the special form $(C_1 s +C_2)^{-2}$. Consider the following variant of Rock, Paper, Scissors (RPS) played by two players Rei and Norman. The game consists of $3n$ rounds of RPS, with the twist being that Rei (the restricted player) must use each of Rock, Paper, and Scissors exactly $n$ times during the $3n$ rounds, while Norman is allowed to play normally without any restrictions. Answering a question of Spiro, we show that a certain greedy strategy is the unique optimal strategy for Rei in this game, and that Norman's expected score is $\Theta(\sqrt{n})$. Moreover, we study semi-restricted versions of general zero sum games and prove a number of results concerning their optimal strategies and expected scores, which in particular implies our results for semi-restricted RPS., Comment: 21 pages, 5 page appendix

This technical report provides additional results for the main paper ``Probabilistic bounds on the $k-$Traveling Salesman Problem ($k-$TSP) and the Traveling Repairman Problem (TRP)''. For the $k-$TSP, we extend the probabilistic bounds derived in the main paper to the case of distributions with general densities. For the TRP, we propose a utility-based notion of fairness and derive constant-factor probabilistic bounds for this objective, thus extending the TRP bounds from the main paper to non-linear utilities.

International audience; This article studies the kinetic dynamics of the rock-paper-scissors binary game in a measure setting given by a non local and non linear integrodifferential equation. After proving the wellposedness of the equation, we provide a precise description of the asymptotic behavior in large time. To do so we adopt a duality approach, which is well suited both as a first step to construct a measure solution by mean of semigroups and to obtain an explicit expression of the asymptotic measure. Even thought the equation is non linear, this measure depends linearly on the initial condition. This result is completed by a decay in total variation norm, which happens to be subgeometric due to the nonlinearity of the equation. This relies on an unusual use of a confining condition that is needed to apply a Harris-type theorem, taken from a recent paper [2] that also provides a way to compute explicitly the constants involved in the aforementioned decay in norm.

We report the results of our NSF-funded project in which we alpha- and beta- tested a survey comprising all aspects of the ethical practice standards from two disciplines with relevance to mathematics, the American Statistical Association (ASA) and Association of Computing Machinery (ACM). Items were modified so that text such as "A computing professional should..." became, "The ethical mathematics practitioner...". We also removed elements that were duplicates or were deemed unlikely to be considered relevant to mathematical practice even after modification. Starting with more than 100 items, plus 10 demographic questions, the final survey included 52 items (plus demographics), and 142 individuals responded to our invitations (through listservs and other widespread emails and announcements) to participate in this 30-minute survey. This white paper reports the project methods and findings regarding the community perspective on the 52 items, specifically, which rise to the level of ethical obligations, which do not meet this level, and what is missing from this list of elements of ethical mathematical practice. The results suggest that the community of mathematicians perceives a much wider range of behaviors to be subject to ethical practice standards than is currently represented., Comment: 48 pages including 6 Tables, plus Appendix

We present a brief overview of Moonshine with an emphasis on connections to physics. Moonshine collectively refers to a set of phenomena connecting group theory, analytic number theory, and vertex operator algebras or conformal field theories. Modern incarnations of Moonshine arise in various BPS observables in string theory and, via dualities, invariants in enumerative geometry. Using data collected from the AMS websites, and the internet in general, we compute the weight-enumerator of the set of 145 AMS fellows who passed away before Aug. 2022, according to the statistics [Age, Number of Publications, Number of Citations]. Using Maple and elementary calculus, we deduced from it the numbers stated in the title, as well as much more detailed and fascinating statistical information. For example, while the correlation coefficient between the number of publications and number of citations is, not surprisingly, positive, it is far lower than one would expect, being a mere 0.5797 . In 1921 Mellin published a Comptes Rendu paper computing the principal root of the polynomial $Z^n + x_1Z^{n_1} + \cdots + x_pZ^{n_p} - 1$ using hypergeometric functions of its coefficients $x_1,...,x_p.$ He used an integral transform nowadays bearing his name. Slightly over three pages, the paper is written in French in a terse style befitting the language. Unable to find an elementary explanation on the web or in a texbook, we wrote this expository article to make Mellin's landmark result accessible to interested people who are not experts in hypergeometric functions and complex analysis.

I consider a setting where reviewers offer very noisy scores for several items for the selection of high-quality ones (e.g., peer review of large conference proceedings), whereas the owner of these items knows the true underlying scores but prefers not to provide this information. To address this withholding of information, in this paper, I introduce the Isotonic Mechanism, a simple and efficient approach to improving imprecise raw scores by leveraging certain information that the owner is incentivized to provide. This mechanism takes the ranking of the items from best to worst provided by the owner as input, in addition to the raw scores provided by the reviewers. It reports the adjusted scores for the items by solving a convex optimization problem. Under certain conditions, I show that the owner's optimal strategy is to honestly report the true ranking of the items to her best knowledge in order to maximize the expected utility. Moreover, I prove that the adjusted scores provided by this owner-assisted mechanism are significantly more accurate than the raw scores provided by the reviewers. The paper [Shi19] uses the Craig-Wayne-Bourgain method to construct solutions of an elliptic problem involving parameters. The results of [Shi19] include regularity assumptions on the perturbation and involve excluding parameters. The paper [Shi19] also constructs response solutions to a quasi-periodically perturbed (ill-posed evolution) problem. In this paper, we use several classical methods (freezing of coefficients, alternative methods for nonlinear elliptic equations) to extend the results of [Shi19]. We weaken the regularity assumptions on the perturbation and we describe the phenomena that happens for all parameters. In the ill-posed problem, we use a recently developed time-dependent center manifold theorem which allows to reduce the problem to a finite-dimensional ODE with quasi-periodic dependence on time. The bounded and sufficiently small solutions of these ODE give solutions of the ill-posed PDE., Comment: 34 pages

An important problem in decision theory concerns the aggregation of individual rankings/ratings into a collective evaluation. We illustrate a new aggregation method in the context of the 2007 MSOM's student paper competition. The aggregation problem in this competition poses two challenges. Firstly, each paper was reviewed only by a very small fraction of the judges; thus the aggregate evaluation is highly sensitive to the subjective scales chosen by the judges. Secondly, the judges provided both cardinal and ordinal evaluations (ratings and rankings) of the papers they reviewed. The contribution here is a new robust methodology that jointly aggregates ordinal and cardinal evaluations into a collective evaluation. This methodology is particularly suitable in cases of incomplete evaluations -- i.e., when the individuals evaluate only a strict subset of the objects. This approach is potentially useful in managerial decision making problems by a committee selecting projects from a large set or capital budgeting involving multiple priorities.

This paper refers to Langlands' big set of notes [L] devoted to the question if the (normalized) local Hecke-Tate root number $\Delta=\Delta(E,\chi)$, where $E$ is a finite separable extension of a fixed non-archimedean local field $F$, and $\chi$ a quasicharacter of $E^\times$, can be appropriately extended to a local $\varepsilon$-factor $\varepsilon_\Delta=\varepsilon_\Delta(E,\rho)$ for all virtual representations $\rho$ of the corresponding Weil group $W_E.$ Whereas Deligne [D] has given a relatively short proof by using the global Artin-Weil L-functions, the proof of Langlands is purely local and splits into two parts: the {\bf algebraic part} to find a minimal set of relations for the functions $\Delta$, such that the existence (and uniqueness) of $\varepsilon_\Delta$ will follow from these relations; and the more extensive {\bf arithmetic part} to give a direct proof that all these relations are actually fulfilled. The paper alluded to in the title contains the following striking result: Let $I$ be the unit interval and $\Delta$ the Cantor set. If $X$ is a quasi Banach space containing no copy of $c_0$ which is isomorphic to a closed subspace of a space with a basis and $C(I, X)$ is linearly homeomorphic to $C(\Delta, X)$, then $X$ is locally convex, i.e., a Banach space. It is shown that Kalton result is sharp by exhibiting non locally convex quasi Banach spaces X with a basis for which $C(I, X)$ and $C(\Delta, X)$ are isomorphic. These notes aim to provide a deeper insight on the specifics of two articles dealing with chemotaxis models with nonlinear production. More precisely, we are referring to the papers "Boundedness of solutions to a quasilinear parabolic-parabolic chemotaxis model with nonlinear signal production" by X. Tao, S. Zhou and M. Ding [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 474:1 (2019) 733-747] and "Boundedness for a fully parabolic Keller-Segel model with sublinear segregation and superlinear aggregation" by S. Frassu and G. Viglialoro [Acta Appl. Math. 171:1 (2021), 19]. These works, independently published in these last years, present results leaving open room for further improvement. Indeed, in the first a gap in the proof of the main claim appears, whereas the cornerstone assumption in the second is not sharp. In these pages we give a more complete picture to the relative underlying comprehension.

In this note, we revisit a result of Benli's and Pollack's on the number of small prime $k^{th}$ power residues. The proof is based on their idea of using reciprocity laws, but the argument is simplified and we prove a slightly stronger bound., Comment: 7 pages

We study a system of ordinary differential equations in R5 that is used as a model both in population dynamics and in game theory, and is known to exhibit a heteroclinic network consisting in the union of four types of elementary heteroclinic cycles. We show the asymptotic stability of the network for parameter values in a range compatible with both population and game dynamics. We obtain estimates of the relative attractiveness of each one of the cycles by computing their stability indices. For the parameter values ensuring the asymptotic stability of the network we relate the attractiveness properties of each cycle to the others. In particular, for three of the cycles we show that if one of them has a weak form of attractiveness, then the other two are completely unstable. We also show the existence of an open region in parameter space where all four cycles are completely unstable and the network is asymptotically stable, giving rise to intricate dynamics that has been observed numerically by other authors.

The dissipativity concept sits at the intersection of physics, systems theory, and control engineering, as a natural generalisation of passive systems that dissipate energy. It relates the external behavior of systems to their internal state, and connects the subjects of optimal control, algebraic Riccati equations, linear matrix inequalities, complex functions, and spectral factorization. Within control, its applications include the analysis and design of interconnected systems (such as cyber-physical systems), robustness, and the absolute stability problem, and network synthesis (of electrical, mechanical, and multi-physics systems). This article details recent developments in the treatment of dissipativity and the related concept of reciprocity for systems that are not necessarily controllable and need not lend themselves naturally to an input-state-output perspective, as is the case for many physical and passive systems. For each $d>1$ the shift locus of degree $d$, denoted ${\mathcal S}_d$, is the space of normalized degree $d$ polynomials in one complex variable for which every critical point is in the attracting basin of infinity under iteration. It is a complex analytic manifold of complex dimension $d-1$. We are able to give an explicit description of ${\mathcal S}_d$ as a complex of spaces over a contractible $\tilde{A}_{d-2}$ building, and to describe the pieces in two quite different ways: 1. (combinatorial): in terms of dynamical extended laminations; or 2. (algebraic): in terms of certain explicit `discriminant-like' affine algebraic varieties. From this structure one may deduce numerous facts, including that ${\mathcal S}_d$ has the homotopy type of a CW complex of real dimension $d-1$; and that ${\mathcal S}_3$ and ${\mathcal S}_4$ are $K(��,1)$s. The method of proof is rather interesting in its own right. In the year 2021, Beg et al. \cite{beg} [J. Fixed Point Theory Appl.(2021)] introduced two classes of non-self mappings namely, generalized $F$-proximal contraction of the first kind and generalized $F$-proximal contraction of the second kind. Then authors studied the existence and uniqueness of best proximity points for this two classes of mappings. In this short note, we show that the existence of best proximity point for generalized $F$-proximal contraction of the first kind follows from the same conclusion in fixed point theory., Comment: 4 pages

In this paper we show that a smoothly and locally isometrically embedded Moebius band has aspect ratio at least $\sqrt 3-(1/26)$. (The actual bound, an algebraic number that arises in an optimization problem, is a tiny bit better.) Let ${\mathbb F}$ be an arbitrary field. We consider a commutative, non-associative, $4$-dimensional algebra ${\mathfrak M}$ of the rock, the paper and the scissors with unit over ${\mathbb F}$ and we prove that the image over ${\mathfrak M}$ of every non-associative multilinear polynomial over ${\mathbb F}$ is a vector space. The same question we consider for two subalgebras: an algebra of the rock, the paper and the scissors without unit, and an algebra of trace zero elements with zero scalar part. Moreover in this paper we consider the questions of possible evaluations of homogeneous polynomials on these algebras.

This article extends the range of 1-DOF rigid-foldable developable quadrilateral creased papers. In a previous article, we put forward a sufficient and necessary condition for a quadrilateral creased paper to be rigid-foldable, and introduce a special sufficient condition that is convenient for practical use, generating quadrilateral creased paper by stitching basic units. Recently, several new results related to the evaluation of the series sum (-1)^n zeta(n)/(n+k) were published. In this short note we show that this series also possesses an interesting connection to the values of the zeta-function on the critical line and to the Euler constant.

The one-dimensional three-state cyclic cellular automaton is a simple spatial model with three states in a cyclic "rock-paper-scissors" prey-predator relationship. Starting from a random configuration, similar states gather in increasingly large clusters; asymptotically, any finite region is filled with a uniform state that is, after some time, driven out by its predator, each state taking its turn in dominating the region (heteroclinic cycles). We consider the situation where each site in the initial configuration is chosen independently at random with a different probability for each state. We prove that the asymptotic probability that a state dominates a finite region corresponds to the initial probability of its prey. The 2D Multi-Agent Path Finding (MAPF) problem aims at finding collision-free paths for a number of agents, from a set of start locations to a set of goal positions in a known 2D environment. MAPF has been studied in theoretical computer science, robotics, and artificial intelligence over several decades, due to its importance for robot navigation. It is currently experiencing significant scientific progress due to its relevance in automated warehousing (such as those operated by Amazon) and in other contemporary application areas. In this paper, we demonstrate that many recently developed MAPF algorithms apply more broadly than currently believed in the MAPF research community. In particular, we describe the 3D Pipe Routing (PR) problem, which aims at placing collision-free pipes from given start locations to given goal locations in a known 3D environment. The MAPF and PR problems are similar: a solution to a MAPF instance is a set of blocked cells in x-y-t space, while a solution to the corresponding PR instance is a set of blocked cells in x-y-z space. We show how to use this similarity to apply several recently developed MAPF algorithms to the PR problem, and discuss their performance on abstract PR instances. We also discuss further research necessary to tackle real-world pipe-routing instances of interest to industry today. We describe a method to construct smooth and compactly supported solutions of 3D incompressible Euler equations and related models. The method is based on localizable Grad–Shafranov equations and is inspired by the recent result (Gavrilov in A steady Euler flow with compact support. Geom Funct Anal 29(1):90–197, [Gav19]).

In this paper we compute the stopping times in the game Rock-Paper-Scissors. By exploiting the recurrence relation we compute the mean values of stopping times. On the other hand, by constructing a transition matrix for a Markov chain associated with the game, we get also the distribution of the stopping times and thereby we compute the mean stopping times again. Then we show that the mean stopping times increase exponentially fast as the number of the participants increases., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure

Recently Dzhafarov and Kon published the paper advertising the possibility to use the coupling technique of classical probability theory to model incompatible observables in quantum physics and quantum-like models of psychology. Here I present comments on this paper by stressing advantages and disadvantages.

The rock-paper-scissors game, commonly played in East Asia, gives a simple model to understand physical, biological, psychological and other problems. The interacting rock-paper-scissors particle system is a point of contact between the kinetic theory of gases by Maxwell and Boltzmann ( collision model) and the coagulation theory by Smoluchowski ( coalescence model). A $2s+1$ types extended rock-paper-scissors collision model naturally introduces a nonlinear integrable system. The time evolution of the $2s+1$ types extended rock-paper-scissors coalescence model is obtained from the logarithmic time change of the nonlinear integrable system. We also discuss the behavior of a discrete rock-paper-scissors coalescence model.

We characterize functions of finite energy in the plane in terms of their traces on the lines that make up "graph paper" with squares of side length $mn$ for all $n$, and certain $\12-$order Sobolev norms on the graph paper lines. We also obtain analogous results for functions of finite energy on two classical fractals: the Sierpinski gasket and the Sierpinski carpet.
