The present work presents a method to be used in the determination of different geometrical isomers of 9,12-octadecadienoic acid present in food fats. The method is based on isotope dilution, the radioactive isomers needed being prepared by isomerization of cis,cis-9,12-octadecadienoic acid. Radioactivity is acquired through esterification of the isomers by 14C-diazomethane. For the identification of the isomers infra-red spectrophotometry, alkali isomerization combined with ultraviolet spectrophotometry, gas chromatography, and ozonolysis are used. The isomer to be determined is separated from other fatty acids by argentation thin layer chromatography. The standard deviation of the method was in 15 parallel analyses 0.04%. The sample of food fat to be examined was milk fat, the cis,cis-9,12-octadecadienoic acid content obtained being 0.83%, which corresponded to about one half of octadecadienoic acids of the sample. When a fatty acid mixture with a known composition was analyzed, the cis,cis-9,12-octadecadienoic acid yield was 99.7% on the average, the standard deviation being 0.04%. Bestimmung der geometrischen Isomeren der 9,12-Octadecadiensaure in Nahrungsfetten Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt eine Methode zur Bestimmung von verschiedenen geometrischen Isomeren der 9,12-Octadecadiensaure in Nahrungsfetten. Die Methode beruht auf der Isotopenverdunnung. Die erforderlichen radioaktiven Isomeren werden durch Isomerisierung der cis,cis-9,12-Octadecadiensaure hergestellt. Die Radioaktivitat wird durch Veresterung der Isomeren mit 14C-Diazomethan erzielt. Zur Identifizierung der Isomeren werden die Infrarot-Spektrophotometrie, die Alkali-Isomerisierung in Verbindung mit der Ultraviolett-Spektrophotometrie, die Gas-Chromatographie und die Ozonolyse angewandt. Das zu bestimmende Isomere wird von den ubrigen Fettsauren durch Silbernitrat-Dunnschicht-Chromatographie getrennt. Die Standardabweichung der Methode bei 15 Parallelbestimmungen lag bei 0.04%. Es wurde Milchfett untersucht, dessen Gehalt an cis,cis-9,12-Octadecadiensaure 0.83% betrug. Dies entsprach etwa der Halfte der in der Probe vorhandenen Octadecadiensauren. Bei der Analyse von Fettsauregemischen mit bekannter Zusammensetzung wurde die cis,cis-9,12-Octadecadiensaure durchschnittlich zu 99.7% wiedergefunden, wobei die Standardabweichung 0.04% betrug.

Rats were fed diets in which rapeseed oil provided 0, 15, 30, 50 or 70 per cent of the calories. The controls were rats whose diet contained 30 or 70 cal. per cent of soybean oil. The diet containing 50 and especially that containing 70 per cent of rapeseed oil clearly retarded the growth of the animals. These groups also showed interstitial inflammatory changes in the myocardium. Similar changes were not found when 30 cal. per cent or less rapeseed oil was given. The histological changes were evidently produced by the rapeseed oil, since soybean oil even at the level of 70 cal. per cent produced no changes.

Zusammenfassung Die Untersuchungen stellen die Fortsetzung fruherer Arbeiten der Verfasser dar, welche sich mit der Korperentwicklung und Futterverwertung des schwarzbunten Niederungsrindes im 1. und 2. Lebenshalbjahr befassen. Das Versuchsmaterial bildeten schwarzbunte Niederungsrinder des Versuchsgutes Friedland des Tierzucht-Instituts der Universitat Gottingen. Die Versuchstiere kamen zu Anfang des 2. Lebensjahres mit einem Durchschnittsgewicht von 320 kg in den Versuch und wogen am Ende des 2. Lebensjahres durchschnittlich 452 kg; die durchschnittliche tagliche Zunahme der Versuchstiere betrug im 2. Lebensjahre demnach 362 g. Die Entwicklung der Korperform wurde durch periodische Abnahme der wichtigsten Korpermase festgestellt. Wahrend der Weidezeit erfolgte keine Beifutterung; in der Stallfutterungsperiode wurde nach einem einheitlichen Futterplan gefuttert, der fur die 83.—104. Lebenswoche nur Heu, Stroh und Futterruben ohne Kraftfutterzulage vorsah. In dieser Zeit waren zur Erzeugung von 100 kg Zuwachs 48,2 kg verdauliches Eiweis in 746,3 kg Starkewerten notig. Unter Verwendung der Versuchsergebnisse wurde ein Futterungsplan aufgestellt, welcher einen Anhalt fur die Futterung von Jungrindern geben soll.

The formation of ionic Co(II)-bis-salicylalaethylenedi-imine complexes of peroxy radicals of methyl esters of fatty acids was followed by means of UV spectra. Typical compounds were isolated and purified, and analyzed for Co content. IR spectra were determined. The mechanism of the autoxidation of fatty acid methyl esters in the presence of “Salcomine” (Co[II]-bissalicylalethylene-di-imine) has been outlined, and its effect is explained as an oxidative addition reaction, resulting from coordinative unsaturation.

SUMMARY Using relatively mild gas chromatographic conditions, including glass-lined injectors, glass columns and lower operating temperatures, the occurrence of a number of previously reported hydrocarbon and oxygenated terpenes in pepper oil has been confirmed. On the basis of gas chromatographic retentions and matching of infrared spectral data, and in the case of the latter compound, mass and NMR spectrometry, cis-p-2-methen-1-ol, cis-p-2,8-menthadien-1-ol and transpinocarveol have been identified as constituents of black pepper oil. Spectral data are reported which permit the partial characterization of a number of additional oxygenated compounds. The presence of artifacts due to photocatalyzed rearrangements is demonstrated and discussed.

METHODS for measuring antioxidants and appraising antioxidant activity appear to be of two general types. If the chemical nature of the antioxidant is known, one may strive for a test specific for the compound or group of interest; for example, the nitroprusside test for sulphydryl groups. Alternatively one may observe the inhibition of some natural oxidative process such as the β-oxidation of fats, as a function of the added antioxidant.
