Diagnostic and evidential static image, video clip, and sound multimedia are captured during routine clinical care in cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, pathology, physiatry, radiation oncology, radiology, endoscopic procedural specialties, and other medical disciplines. Providers typically describe the multimedia findings in contemporaneous electronic health record clinical notes or associate a textual interpretative report. Visual communication aids commonly used to connect, synthesize, and supplement multimedia and descriptive text outside medicine remain technically challenging to integrate into patient care. Such beneficial interactive elements may include hyperlinks between text, multimedia elements, alphanumeric and geometric annotations, tables, graphs, timelines, diagrams, anatomic maps, and hyperlinks to external educational references that patients or provider consumers may find valuable. This HIMSS-SIIM Enterprise Imaging Community workgroup white paper outlines the current and desired clinical future state of interactive multimedia reporting (IMR). The workgroup adopted a consensus definition of IMR as “interactive medical documentation that combines clinical images, videos, sound, imaging metadata, and/or image annotations with text, typographic emphases, tables, graphs, event timelines, anatomic maps, hyperlinks, and/or educational resources to optimize communication between medical professionals, and between medical professionals and their patients.” This white paper also serves as a precursor for future efforts toward solving technical issues impeding routine interactive multimedia report creation and ingestion into electronic health records.

One way of exposing predatory journals is to submit a spoof article to see if it gets accepted. We investigate one journal, looking at how it has performed since a spoof paper it accepted came to light. We find that it has published almost 20% more papers following the acceptance of the spoof paper. The journal has a new web site, which appears to show that it did not publish its first paper until 2018. However, there is an old web site that lists 321 papers dating back to 2012. The editors said that this is due to a new workflow system, which meant that previously published papers could not be listed on the new web site. Moreover, the number of papers could be not accommodated, as a high configuration server would be required to provide a responsive web site. We found some plagiarism, which looks quite serious. We conclude that the spoof paper had little effect on the journal, which continues to operate, seven years after the spoof paper was accepted.

This paper reports on the manufacture of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) from Prosopis juliflora leaf extracts. Various methods of characterization were used, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope TEM. ZnO NPs has a hexagonal wurtzite structure with a preferred orientation of 101 planes, according to XRD. The functional groups found in ZnO NPs isolated from leaves are responsible for the FT-IR peaks that correspond to them. The morphology of the produced nanoparticles is a sphere-like form, as shown in the SEM pictures. TEM examination revealed ZnO NPs with a size of 50–55 nm. These ZnO NPs were used to remediate pollutants in paper mill effluents, and they were able to remove 86% of the organic pollutants from the sample at 0.05 mg/L dose and reduce 89% of the organic pollutants during a 5-h reflex time. Meanwhile, for the photocatalysis of paper mill effluents, it has been noted that COD was removed by 74.30%, 63.23%, and 57.96% for the first, second, and third cycles, respectively.

Light-reflecting characteristics play a crucial role in optically rewritable liquid crystal display (electronic paper). By using a special optimizer software, light-reflecting characteristics of the twisted nematic cell were calculated. The achieved values of the normalized reflection coefficients range within ∼ 0.03 - 0.43, which is comparable or better than other commercial technologies. The calculated contrast ratio of the device is 10 : 1. A 2D image, which can be displayed on the electronic paper was obtained. Comparison of the simulated background color and contrast ratio is very similar with the results, which were obtained in experimental cells of other studies. Our calculations indicate that angular dependence of the reflectance coefficient is almost uniform within a wide range of viewing angles.

The tag operates in the near field and is implemented by means of chains of resonant elements. The characterization and manufacturing process of the tag, printed with a few layers of a commercial organic ink on conventional paper substrate (DIN A4), are presented, and tag functionality is demonstrated by reading it by means of a custom-designed reader. The tags are read by proximity (through the near field), by displacing them over a resonator-loaded transmission line, and each resonant element (bit) of the tag is interrogated by a harmonic signal tuned to the resonance frequency. The coupling between the reader line and the resonant elements of the tag produce and amplitude modulated (AM) signal containing the identification (ID) code of the tag.

Background Electronic prescriptions are often created and delivered electronically to the pharmacy while paper-based/handwritten prescriptions may be delivered to the pharmacy by the patients. These differences in the mode of creation and transmission of the two types of prescription could influence the rate at which outpatients fill new prescriptions of previously untried medications. Objectives This study aimed to evaluate literatures to determine the impact of electronic prescribing compared with paper-based/handwritten prescribing on primary medication adherence in an outpatient setting. Methods The keywords and phrases “outpatients,” “e-prescriptions,” “paper-based prescriptions,” and “primary medication adherence” were combined with their relevant synonyms and medical subject headings. A comprehensive literature search was conducted on EMBASE, CINAHL, and MEDLINE databases, and Google Scholar. The results of the search were screened and selected using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) was used for quality appraisal of included studies. Data relevant to the objective of the review were extracted and analyzed through narrative synthesis. Results A total of 10 original studies were included in the final review, including 1 prospective randomized study and 9 observational studies. Nine of the 10 studies were performed in the United States. Four of the studies indicated that electronic prescribing significantly increases initial medication adherence, while four of the studies suggested the opposite. The remaining two studies found no significant difference in primary medication adherence between the two methods of prescribing. The variations in the studies did not allow the homogeneity required for meta-analysis to be achieved. Conclusion The conflicting findings relating to the efficacy of primary medication adherence across both systems demonstrate the need for a standardized measure of medication adherence. This would help further determine the respective benefits of both approaches. Future research should also be conducted in different countries to give a more accurate representation of adherence.

Background Display signage is ubiquitous and essential in hospitals to serve several clerical, operational, and clinical functions, including displaying notices, providing directions, and presenting clinical information. These functions improve efficiency and patient engagement, reduce errors, and enhance the continuity of care. Over time, signage has evolved from analog approaches such as whiteboards and handwritten notices to digital displays such as liquid crystal displays, light emitting diodes, and, now, electronic ink displays. Electronic ink displays are paper-like displays that are not backlit and show content by aligning microencapsulated color beads in response to an applied electric current. Power is only required to generate content and not to retain it. These displays are very readable, with low eye strain; minimize the emission of blue light; require minimal power; and can be driven by several data sources, ranging from virtual servers to electronic health record systems. These attributes make adapting electronic ink displays to hospitals an ideal use case. Objective In this paper, we aimed to outline the use of signage and displays in hospitals with a focus on electronic ink displays. We aimed to assess the advantages and limitations of using these displays in hospitals and outline the various public-facing and patient-facing applications of electronic ink displays. Finally, we aimed to discuss the technological considerations and an implementation framework that must be followed when adopting and deploying electronic ink displays. Methods The public-facing applications of electronic ink displays include signage and way-finders, timetables for shared workspaces, and noticeboards and bulletin boards. The clinical display applications may be smaller form factors such as door signs or bedside cards. The larger, ≥40-inch form factors may be used within patient rooms or at clinical command centers as a digital whiteboard to display general information, patient and clinician information, and care plans. In all these applications, such displays could replace analog whiteboards, noticeboards, and even other digital screens. Results We are conducting pilot research projects to delineate best use cases and practices in adopting electronic ink displays in clinical settings. This will entail liaising with key stakeholders, gathering objective logistical and feasibility data, and, ultimately, quantifying and describing the effect on clinical care and patient satisfaction. Conclusions There are several use cases in a clinical setting that may lend themselves perfectly to electronic ink display use. The main considerations to be studied in this adoption are network connectivity, content management, privacy and security robustness, and detailed comparison with existing modalities. Electronic ink displays offer a superior opportunity to future-proof existing practices. There is a need for theoretical considerations and real-world testing to determine if the advantages outweigh the limitations of electronic ink displays.

Paper artifacts are contaminated by external factors in the process of preservation such as foxing. For the problem of backward technology of rapid detection of foxing on paper artifacts, a method based on hyperspectral imaging technology is proposed to detect foxing spots on paper artifacts. After selecting the region of interest and obtaining the corresponding average reflectance, the difference in the average reflectance is found after comparing the healthy regions with the diseased regions. Using band operation and minimum noise fraction to observe the characteristics of foxing image, although there is overlap in different parts, the distribution distinction between moldy and healthy regions is obvious; K-nearest neighbor method and BP neural network are applied to establish the spectral discrimination model of paper artifacts with foxing spots, and the overall discrimination rate of the two methods is 73.3% and 85%, respectively. The results show that hyperspectral imaging can be used for the identification of foxing spots, but the distinction between different parts is not good, and the discrimination effect still needs to be improved.

This study focuses on a recently introduced type of indicator measuring disruptiveness in science. Disruptive research diverges from current lines of research by opening up new lines. In the current study, we included the initially proposed indicator of this new type (Funk & Owen-Smith, 2017; Wu, Wang, & Evans, 2019) and several variants with DI1: DI5, DI1n, DI5n, and DEP. Since indicators should measure what they propose to measure, we investigated the convergent validity of the indicators. We used a list of milestone papers, selected and published by editors of Physical Review Letters, and investigated whether this human (experts)-based list is related to values of the several disruption indicators variants and – if so – which variants show the highest correlation with expert judgements. We used bivariate statistics, multiple regression models, and (coarsened) exact matching (CEM) to investigate the convergent validity of the indicators. The results show that the indicators correlate differently with the milestone paper assignments by the editors. It is not the initially proposed disruption index that performed best (DI1), but the variant DI5 which has been introduced by Bornmann, Devarakonda, Tekles, and Chacko (2020a). In the CEM analysis of this study, the DEP variant – introduced by Bu, Waltman, and Huang (in press) – also showed favorable results.

Scientific output, as measured in research published annually, has seen a consistent growth for decades now. As more manuscripts are submitted for publication each year, new publishing venues appear – often as increasingly specialised offshoots of existing journals and conferences. This situation presents scholars with a wealth of publishing venues to consider and choose from for their manuscripts. Surprisingly, we find that the most cited papers are not necessarily found in the highest-ranked journals, while the best conferences dominate in this regard. We find it intriguing that popular Computer Science conferences act like a vacuum of attention, centralising all good publications, while journals are carried less by their renown and thus can attract strong manuscripts even at a low rank. But to what extent does a venue imply a paper’s recognition and popularity? We propose a new approach and processing pipeline, in which we project a heterogeneous publication network, learn representations for papers and classify said papers according to their 2-year citation success. This framework provides a groundwork for a venue recommendation system, a tool for improving paper’s scientific recognition through a better choice of a publishing venue.

Our community publishes peer-reviewed journal, magazine, and conference papers and articles sharing a commitment to originality and to quality content and writing. These papers vary in their characteristics and style, depending on their objectives and their targeted readership. The IEEE Publication Services and Products Board (PSPB) Operations Manual (OM) also provides guidelines differentiating these paper types. There is confusion sometimes, however, concerning the features of magazine papers in particular. Some authors, especially early-career authors, do not fully appreciate certain differences between magazine papers and their journal, transaction, and letter counterparts. This can create a challenge for magazine editors and may result in delay, or rejection, of papers that could have been accepted if written with a better understanding of what magazines are about. We focus our attention here on this issue as it applies to IEEE Communications Magazine (ComMag) in particular. Our goal is to help our new and/or young authors who want to publish in ComMag to customize their writing to the nature of this magazine and enable them to author papers with higher chances of acceptance.

In Today’s world technologies such as Internet of Things, Cloud Computing as well as Fog Computing are growing at an exponential rate which depend upon each other directly or indirectly. The Internet of Things can be described as a network of substantial matter such as cars, washing machines, refrigerator which can interact with each other through internet. Billions of devices will be IoT enabled in near future and generate enormous amount of data but IoT devices has some limitations like storage capabilities, processing capabilities and utilization of resources which can only be handled by integrating it with cloud technology. Cloud model provide environment in which software, Infrastructure, sharable pool of configurable resources, virtual environment, sensors, hardware and database is provided as a utility for IoT devices and users. In cloud computing paradigm some limitations exist for example distance of the data source from multi-hop, geological unified structure, latency, heterogeneity and many more. To address such limitations, Fog computing approach can be used to bring computing assets nearer to IoT devices. Fog computing is an enhancement of the cloud-based Network and computing services. It provides computational and storage services of cloud proximate to IoT devices. This paper provides an overview regarding the cloud computing uses in IoT devices and issues or problems that occur during integration. Handling of problems that occurs during integration of cloud with IoT can be done through fog computing. The purpose of this survey is to understand the concept of fog computing to improve the existing system of Integration of Cloud with IoT.

Wireless technology these days is very quickly becoming crescent. A network that was recently wired to get online was required. Just wired phones have been a thing of the past. In the past four decades, mobile networks have thrived immensely. The starting point was the 1G cellular concept where ‘G’ stances for generation linkages. This had fully developed very rapidly, generating 1G, 2G, 3G and gradually transferring into 4G from generation to generation. And now people are utilizing the 4G networks. 5G network will nearly stretch its wings to conquer this complex world of cell technology. Integrated 5G work is continuing, with complete service planned in 2020. The development of 5G technology is the perfect solution for the many problems facing us today with today’s innovations. 5G will become an intelligent technology that will limit to a single global uniform body the number of different innovations. This paper is mostly about the evolution of mobile wireless networks like 1G and 5G as well as how they vary and their benefits and drawbacks.

Motivation Drug repositioning is an attractive alternative to de novo drug discovery due to reduced time and costs to bring drugs to market. Computational repositioning methods, particularly non-black-box methods that can account for and predict a drug’s mechanism, may provide great benefit for directing future development. By tuning both data and algorithm to utilize relationships important to drug mechanisms, a computational repositioning algorithm can be trained to both predict and explain mechanistically novel indications. Results In this work, we examined the 123 curated drug mechanism paths found in the drug mechanism database (DrugMechDB) and after identifying the most important relationships, we integrated 18 data sources to produce a heterogeneous knowledge graph, MechRepoNet, capable of capturing the information in these paths. We applied the Rephetio repurposing algorithm to MechRepoNet using only a subset of relationships known to be mechanistic in nature and found adequate predictive ability on an evaluation set with AUROC value of 0.83. The resulting repurposing model allowed us to prioritize paths in our knowledge graph to produce a predicted treatment mechanism. We found that DrugMechDB paths, when present in the network were rated highly among predicted mechanisms. We then demonstrated MechRepoNet’s ability to use mechanistic insight to identify a drug’s mechanistic target, with a mean reciprocal rank of 0.525 on a test set of known drug–target interactions. Finally, we walked through repurposing examples of the anti-cancer drug imatinib for use in the treatment of asthma, and metolazone for use in the treatment of osteoporosis, to demonstrate this method’s utility in providing mechanistic insight into repurposing predictions it provides. Background: Little is known about the opinions or perceived benefits of an inspiratory muscle training intervention in patients with cystic fibrosis and their multidisciplinary team. Objective: The aim of this qualitative study was to examine patients' and multidisciplinary teams' views on inspiratory muscle training to inform and tailor future interventions. Methods: Individual, semistructured interviews were conducted to evaluate participants’ perspectives of a 4-week inspiratory muscle training intervention. In this study, 8 of 13 individuals involved in the inspiratory muscle training program (5 children aged 11-14 years; 2 physiotherapists; and 1 respiratory physician) participated. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, analyzed using thematic analyses, and then coded into relevant themes. Results: Four key themes emerged: acceptability, facilitators, barriers, and recommendations. While fun, enjoyment, and improved perceived physical ability were reported by children and their multidisciplinary team following the inspiratory muscle training program, the multidisciplinary team identified factors such as time and cost as key barriers. Conclusions: A short inspiratory muscle training program was perceived to have positive effects on the physical ability and psychosocial health of children with cystic fibrosis. These findings highlight the importance of obtaining participants’ and multidisciplinary teams' perceptions and recommendations to ensure the efficacy and optimal design of future inspiratory muscle training protocols.

Real-time execution of machine learning (ML) pipelines on radiology images is difficult due to limited computing resources in clinical environments, whereas running them in research clusters requires efficient data transfer capabilities. We developed Niffler, an open-source Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) framework that enables ML and processing pipelines in research clusters by efficiently retrieving images from the hospitals’ PACS and extracting the metadata from the images. We deployed Niffler at our institution (Emory Healthcare, the largest healthcare network in the state of Georgia) and retrieved data from 715 scanners spanning 12 sites, up to 350 GB/day continuously in real-time as a DICOM data stream over the past 2 years. We also used Niffler to retrieve images bulk on-demand based on user-provided filters to facilitate several research projects. This paper presents the architecture and three such use cases of Niffler. First, we executed an IVC filter detection and segmentation pipeline on abdominal radiographs in real-time, which was able to classify 989 test images with an accuracy of 96.0%. Second, we applied the Niffler Metadata Extractor to understand the operational efficiency of individual MRI systems based on calculated metrics. We benchmarked the accuracy of the calculated exam time windows by comparing Niffler against the Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW). Niffler accurately identified the scanners’ examination timeframes and idling times, whereas CDW falsely depicted several exam overlaps due to human errors. Third, with metadata extracted from the images by Niffler, we identified scanners with misconfigured time and reconfigured five scanners. Our evaluations highlight how Niffler enables real-time ML and processing pipelines in a research cluster.

Advanced visualization of medical imaging has been a motive for research due to its value for disease analysis, surgical planning, and academical training. More recently, attention has been turning toward mixed reality as a means to deliver more interactive and realistic medical experiences. However, there are still many limitations to the use of virtual reality for specific scenarios. Our intent is to study the current usage of this technology and assess the potential of related development tools for clinical contexts. This paper focuses on virtual reality as an alternative to today’s majority of slice-based medical analysis workstations, bringing more immersive three-dimensional experiences that could help in cross-slice analysis. We determine the key features a virtual reality software should support and present today’s software tools and frameworks for researchers that intend to work on immersive medical imaging visualization. Such solutions are assessed to understand their ability to address existing challenges of the field. It was understood that most development frameworks rely on well-established toolkits specialized for healthcare and standard data formats such as DICOM. Also, game engines prove to be adequate means of combining software modules for improved results. Virtual reality seems to remain a promising technology for medical analysis but has not yet achieved its true potential. Our results suggest that prerequisites such as real-time performance and minimum latency pose the greatest limitations for clinical adoption and need to be addressed. There is also a need for further research comparing mixed realities and currently used technologies.

The consolidation of information technology (IT) teams from individual facilities to an enterprise-wide reporting structure and the transition of IT staff from operating within a diagnostic imaging department, such as Radiology, to an enterprise IT group is common. The plan to optimize this workforce can have undesirable and unintended consequences, if not done correctly. For those organizations seeking to optimize their workforce to deliver the best possible IT services, including to areas that produce and use medical imaging, this can be an exercise of balancing specialized knowledge and centralized staffing capacity planning. Successfully blending staff that have developed through careers in either general or imaging IT areas into a single team structure requires an understanding of their traditional attitudes, priorities, and skill sets. This paper explores the historic similarities and differences in the skill sets and work cultures between imaging and Enterprise IT, and how to use both to deliver the best outcomes.

Motivation A phylogenetic network is a powerful model to represent entangled evolutionary histories with both divergent (speciation) and convergent (e.g. hybridization, reassortment, recombination) evolution. The standard approach to inference of hybridization networks is to (i) reconstruct rooted gene trees and (ii) leverage gene tree discordance for network inference. Recently, we introduced a method called RF-Net for accurate inference of virus reassortment and hybridization networks from input gene trees in the presence of errors commonly found in phylogenetic trees. While RF-Net demonstrated the ability to accurately infer networks with up to four reticulations from erroneous input gene trees, its application was limited by the number of reticulations it could handle in a reasonable amount of time. This limitation is particularly restrictive in the inference of the evolutionary history of segmented RNA viruses such as influenza A virus (IAV), where reassortment is one of the major mechanisms shaping the evolution of these pathogens. Results Here, we expand the functionality of RF-Net that makes it significantly more applicable in practice. Crucially, we introduce a fast extension to RF-Net, called Fast-RF-Net, that can handle large numbers of reticulations without sacrificing accuracy. In addition, we develop automatic stopping criteria to select the appropriate number of reticulations heuristically and implement a feature for RF-Net to output error-corrected input gene trees. We then conduct a comprehensive study of the original method and its novel extensions and confirm their efficacy in practice using extensive simulation and empirical IAV evolutionary analyses. During a global health crisis, people are exposed to vast amounts of information from a variety of sources. Here, we assessed which information source could increase knowledge about COVID-19 (Study 1) and COVID-19 vaccines (Study 2). In Study 1, a US census matched sample of 1060 participants rated the accuracy of a set of statements and then were randomly assigned to one of 10 between-subjects conditions of varying sources providing belief-relevant information: a political leader (Trump/Biden), a health authority (Fauci/CDC), an anecdote (Democrat/Republican), a large group of prior participants (Democrats/Republicans/Generic), or no source (Control). Finally, they rated the accuracy of the initial set of statements again. Study 2 involved a replication with a sample of 1876 participants and focused on the COVID-19 vaccine. We found that knowledge increased most when the source of information was a generic group of people, irrespective of participants’ political affiliation. We also found that while expert communications were most successful at increasing Democrats’ vaccination intentions, no source was successful at increasing Republicans’ vaccination intention. Recently, virus diseases, such as SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and COVID-19, continue to emerge and pose a severe public health problem. These diseases threaten the lives of many people and cause serious social and economic losses. Recent developments in information technology (IT) and connectivity have led to the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in many industries. These industries, where IoT and AI together are making significant impacts, are the healthcare and the diagnosis department. In addition, by actively communicating with smart devices and various biometric sensors, it is expanding its application fields to telemedicine, healthcare, and disease prevention. Even though existing IoT and AI technologies can enhance disease detection, monitoring, and quarantine, their impact is very limited because they are not integrated or applied rapidly to the emergence of a sudden epidemic. Especially in the situation where infectious diseases are rapidly spreading, the conventional methods fail to prevent large-scale infections and block global spreads through prediction, resulting in great loss of lives. Therefore, in this paper, various sources of infection information with local limitations are collected through virus disease information collector, and AI analysis and severity matching are performed through AI broker. Finally, through the Integrated Disease Control Center, risk alerts are issued, proliferation block letters are sent, and post-response services are provided quickly. Suppose we further develop the proposed integrated virus disease control model. In that case, it will be possible to proactively detect and warn of risk factors in response to infectious diseases that are rapidly spreading worldwide and strengthen measures to prevent spreading of infection in no time.

Summary Multiple sequence alignment is an initial step in many bioinformatics pipelines, including phylogeny estimation, protein structure prediction and taxonomic identification of reads produced in amplicon or metagenomic datasets, etc. Yet, alignment estimation is challenging on datasets that exhibit substantial sequence length heterogeneity, and especially when the datasets have fragmentary sequences as a result of including reads or contigs generated by next-generation sequencing technologies. Here, we examine techniques that have been developed to improve alignment estimation when datasets contain substantial numbers of fragmentary sequences. We find that MAGUS, a recently developed MSA method, is fairly robust to fragmentary sequences under many conditions, and that using a two-stage approach where MAGUS is used to align selected ‘backbone sequences’ and the remaining sequences are added into the alignment using ensembles of Hidden Markov Models further improves alignment accuracy. The combination of MAGUS with the ensemble of eHMMs (i.e. MAGUS+eHMMs) clearly improves on UPP, the previous leading method for aligning datasets with high levels of fragmentation. Motivation Gene expression-based multiclass prediction, such as tumor subtyping, is a non-trivial bioinformatic problem. Most classifier methods operate by comparing expression levels relative to other samples. Methods that base predictions on the expression pattern within a sample have been proposed as an alternative. As these methods are invariant to the cohort composition and can be applied to a sample in isolation, they can collectively be termed single sample predictors (SSP). Such predictors could potentially be used for preprocessing-free classification of new samples and be built to function across different expression platforms where proper batch and dataset normalization is challenging. Here, we evaluate the behavior of several multiclass SSPs based on binary gene-pair rules (k-Top Scoring Pairs, Absolute Intrinsic Molecular Subtyping and a new Random Forest approach) and compare them to centroids built with centered or raw expression values, with the criteria that an optimal predictor should have high accuracy, overcome differences in tumor purity, be robust across expression platforms and provide an informative prediction output score. Results We found that gene-pair-based SSPs showed excellent performance on many expression-based classification tasks. The three methods differed in prediction score output, handling of tied scores and behavior in low purity samples. The k-Top Scoring Pairs and Random Forest approach both achieved high classification accuracy while providing an informative prediction score. Although gene-pair-based SSPs have been touted as being cross-platform compatible (through training on mixed platform data), out-of-the-box compatibility with a new dataset remains a potential issue that warrants cohort-to-cohort verification. Motivation In the last decade, de novo protein structure prediction accuracy for individual proteins has improved significantly by utilising deep learning (DL) methods for harvesting the co-evolution information from large multiple sequence alignments (MSAs). The same approach can, in principle, also be used to extract information about evolutionary-based contacts across protein–protein interfaces. However, most earlier studies have not used the latest DL methods for inter-chain contact distance prediction. This article introduces a fold-and-dock method based on predicted residue-residue distances with trRosetta. Results The method can simultaneously predict the tertiary and quaternary structure of a protein pair, even when the structures of the monomers are not known. The straightforward application of this method to a standard dataset for protein–protein docking yielded limited success. However, using alternative methods for generating MSAs allowed us to dock accurately significantly more proteins. We also introduced a novel scoring function, PconsDock, that accurately separates 98% of correctly and incorrectly folded and docked proteins. The average performance of the method is comparable to the use of traditional, template-based or ab initio shape-complementarity-only docking methods. Moreover, the results of conventional and fold-and-dock approaches are complementary, and thus a combined docking pipeline could increase overall docking success significantly. This methodology contributed to the best model for one of the CASP14 oligomeric targets, H1065. Motivation Differential network inference is a fundamental and challenging problem to reveal gene interactions and regulation relationships under different conditions. Many algorithms have been developed for this problem; however, they do not consider the differences between the importance of genes, which may not fit the real-world situation. Different genes have different mutation probabilities, and the vital genes associated with basic life activities have less fault tolerance to mutation. Equally treating all genes may bias the results of differential network inference. Thus, it is necessary to consider the importance of genes in the models of differential network inference. Results Based on the Gaussian graphical model with adaptive gene importance regularization, we develop a novel Importance-Penalized Joint Graphical Lasso method (IPJGL) for differential network inference. The presented method is validated by the simulation experiments as well as the real datasets. Furthermore, to precisely evaluate the results of differential network inference, we propose a new metric named APC2 for the differential levels of gene pairs. We apply IPJGL to analyze the TCGA colorectal and breast cancer datasets and find some candidate cancer genes with significant survival analysis results, including SOST for colorectal cancer and RBBP8 for breast cancer. We also conduct further analysis based on the interactions in the Reactome database and confirm the utility of our method. The digital transformation offers new opportunities for organizations to expand their existing service portfolio in order to achieve competitive advantages. A popular way to create new customer value is the offer of analytics-based services (ABS)—services that apply analytical methods to data to empower customers to make better decisions and to solve complex problems. However, research still lacks to provide a profound conceptualization of this novel service type. Similarly, actionable insights on how to purposefully establish ABS in the market to enrich the service portfolio remain scarce. We perform a cluster analysis of 105 ABS and triangulate it with a revelatory case study to identify four generic ABS archetypes and to unveil their specific service objectives and characteristics. We also isolate essential factors that shape decision-making regarding the choice of adequate archetypes and subsequent transitions between them. The detailed characterization of different ABS types contributes to a more profound theorizing process on ABS as well as provides a systematization for strategic opportunities to enrich service portfolios in practice.

Motivation Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the biggest global problems threatening human and animal health. Rapid and accurate AMR diagnostic methods are thus very urgently needed. However, traditional antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is time-consuming, low throughput and viable only for cultivable bacteria. Machine learning methods may pave the way for automated AMR prediction based on genomic data of the bacteria. However, comparing different machine learning methods for the prediction of AMR based on different encodings and whole-genome sequencing data without previously known knowledge remains to be done. Results In this study, we evaluated logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF) and convolutional neural network (CNN) for the prediction of AMR for the antibiotics ciprofloxacin, cefotaxime, ceftazidime and gentamicin. We could demonstrate that these models can effectively predict AMR with label encoding, one-hot encoding and frequency matrix chaos game representation (FCGR encoding) on whole-genome sequencing data. We trained these models on a large AMR dataset and evaluated them on an independent public dataset. Generally, RFs and CNNs perform better than LR and SVM with AUCs up to 0.96. Furthermore, we were able to identify mutations that are associated with AMR for each antibiotic. Our aim was to determine the effect of wearing a surgical mask on the number and type of dictation errors in unedited radiology reports. IRB review was waived for this prospective matched-pairs study in which no patient data was used. Model radiology reports (n = 40) simulated those typical for an academic medical center. Six randomized radiologists dictated using speech-recognition software with and without a surgical mask. Dictations were compared to model reports and errors were classified according to type and severity. A statistical model was used to demonstrate that error rates for all types of errors were greater when masks are worn compared to when they are not (unmasked: 21.7 ± 4.9 errors per 1000 words, masked: 27.1 ± 2.2 errors per 1000 words; adjusted p

The image biomarkers standardization initiative (IBSI) was formed to address the standardization of extraction of quantifiable imaging metrics. Despite its effort, there remains a lack of consensus or established guidelines regarding radiomic feature terminology, the underlying mathematics and their implementation across various software programs. This creates a scenario where features extracted using different toolboxes cannot be used to build or validate the same model leading to a non-generalization of radiomic results. In this study, IBSI-established phantom and benchmark values were used to compare the variation of the radiomic features while using 6 publicly available software programs and 1 in-house radiomics pipeline. All IBSI-standardized features (11 classes, 173 in total) were extracted. The relative differences between the extracted feature values from the different software programs and the IBSI benchmark values were calculated to measure the inter-software agreement. To better understand the variations, features are further grouped into 3 categories according to their properties: 1) morphology, 2) statistic/histogram and 3)texture features. While a good agreement was observed for a majority of radiomics features across the various tested programs, relatively poor agreement was observed for morphology features. Significant differences were also found in programs that use different gray-level discretization approaches. Since these software programs do not include all IBSI features, the level of quantitative assessment for each category was analyzed using Venn and UpSet diagrams and quantified using two ad hoc metrics. Morphology features earned lowest scores for both metrics, indicating that morphological features are not consistently evaluated among software programs. We conclude that radiomic features calculated using different software programs may not be interchangeable. Further studies are needed to standardize the workflow of radiomic feature extraction. Maximum intensity projection (MIP) technology is a computer visualization method that projects three-dimensional spatial data on a visualization plane. According to the specific purposes, the specific lab thickness and direction can be selected. This technology can better show organs, such as blood vessels, arteries, veins, and bronchi and so forth, from different directions, which could bring more intuitive and comprehensive results for doctors in the diagnosis of related diseases. However, in this traditional projection technology, the details of the small projected target are not clearly visualized when the projected target is not much different from the surrounding environment, which could lead to missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a new technology that can better and clearly display the angiogram. However, to the best of our knowledge, research in this area is scarce. To fill this gap in the literature, in the present study, we propose a new method based on the hybrid of convolutional neural network (CNN) and radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) to synthesize the projection image. We first adopted the U-net to obtain feature or enhanced images to be projected; subsequently, the RBF neural network performed further synthesis processing for these data; finally, the projection images were obtained. For experimental data, in order to increase the robustness of the proposed algorithm, the following three different types of datasets were adopted: the vascular projection of the brain, the bronchial projection of the lung parenchyma, and the vascular projection of the liver. In addition, radiologist evaluation and five classic metrics of image definition were implemented for effective analysis. Finally, compared to the traditional MIP technology and other structures, the use of a large number of different types of data and superior experimental results proved the versatility and robustness of the proposed method.

The need to intensify the process of extracting sugar substances from sweet sorghum stalks in order to improve the quality and yield of the target product has been substantiated. Existing techniques of sugar substance extraction used in sweet sorghum processing technologies have been analyzed. The application of a combined technique for extracting sugary substances has been proposed implying the production of pressed and diffusion juice. The results of optimizing the press technique of juice extraction from sorghum stalks are given. The equations of material balance of products and sugars have been built, depending on such factors as the degree of pressing, the initial content of solids and sugars in the stalks. A procedure for calculating the yield of pressed juice, cake, and the content of total sugars has been devised, according to which the preliminary pressing of the stalks ensures the extraction of juice in the range of 25‒35%, the yield of the pressed cake is 75‒65% on average, with a sugar content exceeding 60%. It has been experimentally established that the use of the anti-current process of extraction of sugar substances from the pressed cake ensures their complete extraction from raw materials. The rational parameters for this process have been defined. At a temperature of 66–70°C and a duration of 20minutes, it is possible to obtain an extract whose content of solids is 13.0%, total sugars ‒ 11.10%, and whose purity is 85.38%. The research was carried out in order to intensify the extraction of sugar substances from sweet sorghum plant raw materials, to improve the technical level of the extraction process, and implement the devised method under industrial conditions. Further implementation of these results in the food industry could make it possible to establish the production of a wide range of sugar-containing products, both organically and as a natural substitute for sugar in food products.

Motivation A major goal of personalized medicine in oncology is the optimization of treatment strategies given measurements of the genetic and molecular profiles of cancer cells. To further our knowledge on drug sensitivity, machine learning techniques are commonly applied to cancer cell line panels. Results We present a novel integer linear programming formulation, called MEthod for Rule Identification with multi-omics DAta (MERIDA), for predicting the drug sensitivity of cancer cells. The method represents a modified version of the LOBICO method and yields easily interpretable models amenable to a Boolean logic-based interpretation. Since the proposed altered logical rules lead to an enormous acceleration of the running times of MERIDA compared to LOBICO, we cannot only consider larger input feature sets integrated from genetic and molecular omics data but also build more comprehensive models that mirror the complexity of cancer initiation and progression. Moreover, we enable the inclusion of a priori knowledge that can either stem from biomarker databases or can also be newly acquired knowledge gathered iteratively by previous runs of MERIDA. Our results show that this approach does not only lead to an improved predictive performance but also identifies a variety of putative sensitivity and resistance biomarkers. We also compare our approach to state-of-the-art machine learning methods and demonstrate the superior performance of our method. Hence, MERIDA has great potential to deepen our understanding of the molecular mechanisms causing drug sensitivity or resistance. Motivation Uncovering the cellular and mechanical processes that drive embryo formation requires an accurate read out of cell geometries over time. However, automated extraction of 3D cell shapes from time-lapse microscopy remains challenging, especially when only membranes are labeled. Results We present an image analysis framework for automated tracking and three-dimensional cell segmentation in confocal time lapses. A sphere clustering approach allows for local thresholding and application of logical rules to facilitate tracking and unseeded segmentation of variable cell shapes. Next, the segmentation is refined by a discrete element method simulation where cell shapes are constrained by a biomechanical cell shape model. We apply the framework on Caenorhabditis elegans embryos in various stages of early development and analyze the geometry of the 7- and 8-cell stage embryo, looking at volume, contact area and shape over time. In clinical routine, wound documentation is one of the most important contributing factors to treating patients with acute or chronic wounds. The wound documentation process is currently very time-consuming, often examiner-dependent, and therefore imprecise. This study aimed to validate a software-based method for automated segmentation and measurement of wounds on photographic images using the Mask R-CNN (Region-based Convolutional Neural Network). During the validation, five medical experts manually segmented an independent dataset with 35 wound photographs at two different points in time with an interval of 1 month. Simultaneously, the dataset was automatically segmented using the Mask R-CNN. Afterwards, the segmentation results were compared, and intra- and inter-rater analyses performed. In the statistical evaluation, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out and dice coefficients were calculated. The ANOVA showed no statistically significant differences throughout all raters and the network in the first segmentation round (F = 1.424 and p > 0.228) and the second segmentation round (F = 0.9969 and p > 0.411). The repeated measure analysis demonstrated no statistically significant differences in the segmentation quality of the medical experts over time (F = 6.05 and p > 0.09). However, a certain intra-rater variability was apparent, whereas the Mask R-CNN consistently provided identical segmentations regardless of the point in time. Using the software-based method for segmentation and measurement of wounds on photographs can accelerate the documentation process and improve the consistency of measured values while maintaining quality and precision.

In 2020, as COVID-19 impacted the world, instructional designers quickly came to the forefront of higher education, consulting, and corporate settings. Additionally, in early 2020, the Association for Talent Development (ATD) globally launched their new Talent Development Capability Model. To determine how instructional design is operationalized in various industries, we utilized the Talent Development Capability Model as a framework to review 100 online job postings from LinkedIn, Indeed.com, and HigherEdJobs.com, scanning each for the 23 capabilities identified in the ATD Talent Development Capability Model. Using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) organizational framework as our method of reviewing job postings, we found that instructional design, talent delivery and facilitation, technology application, communication, and collaboration and leadership capabilities appeared the most frequently. Educational requirements were statistically significantly associated with job sectors, as shown in our analysis. With these results and analysis, this research will inform both formal instructional design education programs and job seekers regarding how instructional design is operationalized in job requisitions. This research will also provide insights into alignments with the ATD Talent Development Capability Model and job requisitions.

Motivation Current methods for genotype imputation and phasing exploit the volume of data in haplotype reference panels and rely on hidden Markov models (HMMs). Existing programs all have essentially the same imputation accuracy, are computationally intensive and generally require prephasing the typed markers. Results We introduce a novel data-mining method for genotype imputation and phasing that substitutes highly efficient linear algebra routines for HMM calculations. This strategy, embodied in our Julia program MendelImpute.jl, avoids explicit assumptions about recombination and population structure while delivering similar prediction accuracy, better memory usage and an order of magnitude or better run-times compared to the fastest competing method. MendelImpute operates on both dosage data and unphased genotype data and simultaneously imputes missing genotypes and phase at both the typed and untyped SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms). Finally, MendelImpute naturally extends to global and local ancestry estimation and lends itself to new strategies for data compression and hence faster data transport and sharing. Motivation Many high-throughput screening studies have been carried out in cancer cell lines to identify therapeutic agents and targets. Existing consistency assessment studies only examined two datasets at a time, with conclusions based on a subset of carefully selected features rather than considering global consistency of all the data. However, poor concordance can still be observed for a large part of the data even when selected features are highly consistent. Results In this study, we assembled nine compound screening datasets and three functional genomics datasets. We derived direct measures of consistency as well as indirect measures of consistency based on association between functional data and copy number-adjusted gene expression data. These results have been integrated into a web application—the Functional Data Consistency Explorer (FDCE), to allow users to make queries and generate interactive visualizations so that functional data consistency can be assessed for individual features of interest. Data augmentation refers to a group of techniques whose goal is to battle limited amount of available data to improve model generalization and push sample distribution toward the true distribution. While different augmentation strategies and their combinations have been investigated for various computer vision tasks in the context of deep learning, a specific work in the domain of medical imaging is rare and to the best of our knowledge, there has been no dedicated work on exploring the effects of various augmentation methods on the performance of deep learning models in prostate cancer detection. In this work, we have statically applied five most frequently used augmentation techniques (random rotation, horizontal flip, vertical flip, random crop, and translation) to prostate Diffusion-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging training dataset of 217 patients separately and evaluated the effect of each method on the accuracy of prostate cancer detection. The augmentation algorithms were applied independently to each data channel and a shallow as well as a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) were trained on the five augmented sets separately. We used Area Under Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) to evaluate the performance of the trained CNNs on a separate test set of 95 patients, using a validation set of 102 patients for finetuning. The shallow network outperformed the deep network with the best 2D slice-based AUC of 0.85 obtained by the rotation method.

To develop a U-net deep learning method for breast tissue segmentation on fat-sat T1-weighted (T1W) MRI using transfer learning (TL) from a model developed for non-fat-sat images. The training dataset (N = 126) was imaged on a 1.5 T MR scanner, and the independent testing dataset (N = 40) was imaged on a 3 T scanner, both using fat-sat T1W pulse sequence. Pre-contrast images acquired in the dynamic-contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI sequence were used for analysis. All patients had unilateral cancer, and the segmentation was performed using the contralateral normal breast. The ground truth of breast and fibroglandular tissue (FGT) segmentation was generated using a template-based segmentation method with a clustering algorithm. The deep learning segmentation was performed using U-net models trained with and without TL, by using initial values of trainable parameters taken from the previous model for non-fat-sat images. The ground truth of each case was used to evaluate the segmentation performance of the U-net models by calculating the dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and the overall accuracy based on all pixels. Pearson’s correlation was used to evaluate the correlation of breast volume and FGT volume between the U-net prediction output and the ground truth. In the training dataset, the evaluation was performed using tenfold cross-validation, and the mean DSC with and without TL was 0.97 vs. 0.95 for breast and 0.86 vs. 0.80 for FGT. When the final model developed with and without TL from the training dataset was applied to the testing dataset, the mean DSC was 0.89 vs. 0.83 for breast and 0.81 vs. 0.81 for FGT, respectively. Application of TL not only improved the DSC, but also decreased the required training case number. Lastly, there was a high correlation (R2 > 0.90) for both the training and testing datasets between the U-net prediction output and ground truth for breast volume and FGT volume. U-net can be applied to perform breast tissue segmentation on fat-sat images, and TL is an efficient strategy to develop a specific model for each different dataset.

Motivation B-cell epitopes (BCEs) play a pivotal role in the development of peptide vaccines, immuno-diagnostic reagents and antibody production, and thus in infectious disease prevention and diagnostics in general. Experimental methods used to determine BCEs are costly and time-consuming. Therefore, it is essential to develop computational methods for the rapid identification of BCEs. Although several computational methods have been developed for this task, generalizability is still a major concern, where cross-testing of the classifiers trained and tested on different datasets has revealed accuracies of 51–53%. Results We describe a new method called EpitopeVec, which uses a combination of residue properties, modified antigenicity scales, and protein language model-based representations (protein vectors) as features of peptides for linear BCE predictions. Extensive benchmarking of EpitopeVec and other state-of-the-art methods for linear BCE prediction on several large and small datasets, as well as cross-testing, demonstrated an improvement in the performance of EpitopeVec over other methods in terms of accuracy and area under the curve. As the predictive performance depended on the species origin of the respective antigens (viral, bacterial and eukaryotic), we also trained our method on a large viral dataset to create a dedicated linear viral BCE predictor with improved cross-testing performance. We develop and evaluate a deep learning algorithm to classify multiple catheters on neonatal chest and abdominal radiographs. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained using a dataset of 777 neonatal chest and abdominal radiographs, with a split of 81%–9%–10% for training-validation-testing, respectively. We employed ResNet-50 (a CNN), pre-trained on ImageNet. Ground truth labelling was limited to tagging each image to indicate the presence or absence of endotracheal tubes (ETTs), nasogastric tubes (NGTs), and umbilical arterial and venous catheters (UACs, UVCs). The dataset included 561 images containing two or more catheters, 167 images with only one, and 49 with none. Performance was measured with average precision (AP), calculated from the area under the precision-recall curve. On our test data, the algorithm achieved an overall AP (95% confidence interval) of 0.977 (0.679–0.999) for NGTs, 0.989 (0.751–1.000) for ETTs, 0.979 (0.873–0.997) for UACs, and 0.937 (0.785–0.984) for UVCs. Performance was similar for the set of 58 test images consisting of two or more catheters, with an AP of 0.975 (0.255–1.000) for NGTs, 0.997 (0.009–1.000) for ETTs, 0.981 (0.797–0.998) for UACs, and 0.937 (0.689–0.990) for UVCs. Our network thus achieves strong performance in the simultaneous detection of these four catheter types. Radiologists may use such an algorithm as a time-saving mechanism to automate reporting of catheters on radiographs. Motivation Genomic region sets summarize functional genomics data and define locations of interest in the genome such as regulatory regions or transcription factor binding sites. The number of publicly available region sets has increased dramatically, leading to challenges in data analysis. Results We propose a new method to represent genomic region sets as vectors, or embeddings, using an adapted word2vec approach. We compared our approach to two simpler methods based on interval unions or term frequency-inverse document frequency and evaluated the methods in three ways: First, by classifying the cell line, antibody or tissue type of the region set; second, by assessing whether similarity among embeddings can reflect simulated random perturbations of genomic regions; and third, by testing robustness of the proposed representations to different signal thresholds for calling peaks. Our word2vec-based region set embeddings reduce dimensionality from more than a hundred thousand to 100 without significant loss in classification performance. The vector representation could identify cell line, antibody and tissue type with over 90% accuracy. We also found that the vectors could quantitatively summarize simulated random perturbations to region sets and are more robust to subsampling the data derived from different peak calling thresholds. Our evaluations demonstrate that the vectors retain useful biological information in relatively lower-dimensional spaces. We propose that vector representation of region sets is a promising approach for efficient analysis of genomic region data. Motivation Polygenic scores (PGS) aim to genetically predict complex traits at an individual level. PGS are typically trained on genome-wide association summary statistics and require an independent test dataset to tune parameters. More recent methods allow parameters to be tuned on the training data, removing the need for independent test data, but approaches are computationally intensive. Based on fine-mapping principles, we present RápidoPGS, a flexible and fast method to compute PGS requiring summary-level Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) datasets only, with little computational requirements and no test data required for parameter tuning. Results We show that RápidoPGS performs slightly less well than two out of three other widely used PGS methods (LDpred2, PRScs and SBayesR) for case–control datasets, with median r2 difference: -0.0092, -0.0042 and 0.0064, respectively, but up to 17 000-fold faster with reduced computational requirements. RápidoPGS is implemented in R and can work with user-supplied summary statistics or download them from the GWAS catalog. Introduction. In recent years, there has been a constant search for more advanced and environmentally friendlymeans for antimicrobial treatment of cellulose-containing tissues of various intended uses in the textile industry.Problem Statement. The problem of protection of textile materials and products from microbiological destruction is complex and multifaceted and needs to be solved. Today, one of the methods of protection is to provide textile materials with biocidal properties, which not only prevents the growth of bacteria, but can also ensure a high level of tissue safety. Therefore, we are faced with the task of finding new safe biocidal products.Purpose. The research has been made to determine the level of safety of textile materials treated by biocidalsubstances with the thiosulfonate structure including Ethylthiosulfanilate, Methylthiosulfanilate and Allylthiosulfanilate.Materials and Methods. The fabrics of different chemical composition were used in the study, designed for themanufacture of overalls. New preparations of thiosulfonate structure were chosen for impregnation: ethylthiosulfanilate (ETS), methylthiosulfanilate (MTS) and allylthiosulfanilate (ATS). The presence of heavy metals and pesticides was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry with the use of a ZEENIT 650P spectrometer (Germany).Results. It has been established that the detected level of heavy metals and pesticides in the studied textile materials is insignificant and is within the regulatory requirements. It has been confirmed that the studied biocidal substances are low-toxic and environmentally friendly, because before and after treatment they did not change the hygienic parameters of tissues. A method for imparting biocidal properties to textile materials for the manufacture of overalls, in particular by impregnating textile materials with an alcoholic solution of biocidal products, has been developed. Also due to this treatment, the water absorption of materials decreases by an average of 40%.Conclusions. The treatment of textile materials with biocidal preparations of the thiosulfonate structure allowsobtaining simultaneously two desired effects for these fabrics: the appropriate bioresistance and water resistance.

Morse Glasses is a cost efficient wearable device based on IoT technology and a modified Morse code that tracks the patient’s eyes blinks and translates it into a generated speech. A sequence of Morse encoded alphabets/sentences along with the frequently used ones is displayed and heard on any android supported device that is installed Morse Glasses mobile application. With cost less than 30$, patients with motor neuron diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) can communicate easily with the others, express their needs and simply live their life normally.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the long-standing public health practice of contact tracing into the public spotlight. While contact tracing and case investigation have been carefully designed to protect privacy, the huge volume of tracing which is being carried out as part of the pandemic response in the United States is highlighting potential concerns around privacy, legality, and equity. Contact tracing during the pandemic has gained particular attention for the new use of digital technologies—both on the consumer side in the form of Exposure Notification applications, and for public health agencies as digital case management software systems enable massive scaling of operations. While the consumer application side of digital innovation has dominated the news and academic discourse around privacy, people are likely to interact more intensively with public health agencies and their use of digital case management systems. Effective use of digital case management for contact tracing requires revisiting the existing legal frameworks, privacy protections, and security practices for management of sensitive health data. The scale of these tools and demands of an unprecedented pandemic response are introducing new risks through the collection of huge volumes of data, and expanding requirements for more adept data sharing among jurisdictions. Public health agencies must strengthen their best practices for data collection and protection even in the absence of comprehensive or clear guidance. This requires navigating a difficult balance between rigorous data protection and remaining highly adaptive and agile.

The purpose of writing this article is to examine throughout searching articles and other literature on the types and classifications of food additives, the development of processed fishery products, and the application of food additives in processed fishery products. Based on search results from various articles and other literature it can be concluded that the classification of Food Additives according to the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No. 722 / Menkes / Per / IX / 88 [1] are as follows: dyes, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, antioxidants, anti-stick, flavor and aroma, acidity regulators, bleach or flour, emulsifiers, stabilizers and thickeners, hardeners and sequestrants. Fishery products can be developed to increase added value and zero waste.
