Quantum information scrambling (QIS), from the perspective of quantum information theory, is generally understood as local non-retrievability of information evolved through some dynamical process, and is often quantified via entropic quantities such as the tripartite information. We argue that this approach comes with a number of issues, in large part due to its reliance on quantum mutual informations, which do not faithfully quantify correlations directly retrievable via measurements, and in part due to the specific methodology used to compute tripartite informations of the studied dynamics. We show that these issues can be overcome by using accessible mutual informations, defining corresponding ``accessible tripartite informations'', and provide explicit examples of dynamics whose scrambling properties are not properly quantified by the standard tripartite information. Our results lay the groundwork for a more profound understanding of what QIS represents, and reveal a number of promising, as of yet unexplored, venues for futher research., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, comments welcome

The Bootstrap approach to calculating cosmological correlators relies on a well motivated ansatz. It is typical in the literature to assume that correlators are rational functions as this greatly increases our constraining power. However, this has only previously been demonstrated for some specific theories. In this paper we find a set of assumptions which we prove are sufficient to ensure that the wavefunction coefficients are rational. As a corollary of this we generalise the manifestly local test to higher dimensions. This result greatly reduces the allowed space of functions that wavefunction coefficients can take in both the Effective Field Theory of Inflation and Pure Gravity models and is thus a key ingredient in the Cosmological Bootstrap program., Comment: 18 pages

Proposed hybrid algorithms encode a combinatorial cost function into a problem Hamiltonian and optimize its energy by varying over a set of states with low circuit complexity. Classical processing is typically only used for the choice of variational parameters following gradient descent. As a consequence, these approaches are limited by the descriptive power of the associated states. We argue that for certain combinatorial optimization problems, such algorithms can be hybridized further, thus harnessing the power of efficient non-local classical processing. Specifically, we consider combining a quantum variational ansatz with a greedy classical post-processing procedure for the MaxCut-problem on $3$-regular graphs. We show that the average cut-size produced by this method can be quantified in terms of the energy of a modified problem Hamiltonian. This motivates the consideration of an improved algorithm which variationally optimizes the energy of the modified Hamiltonian. We call this a twisted hybrid algorithm since the additional classical processing step is combined with a different choice of variational parameters. We exemplify the viability of this method using the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), giving analytic lower bounds on the expected approximation ratios achieved by twisted QAOA. These show that the necessary non-locality of the quantum ansatz can be reduced compared to the original QAOA: We find that for levels $p=2,\ldots, 6$, the level $p$ can be reduced by one while roughly maintaining the expected approximation ratio. This reduces the circuit depth by $4$ and the number of variational parameters by $2$., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures

Supernovae (SNe) are among the most energetic events in the universe still far from being fully understood. An early and prompt detection of neutrinos is a one-time opportunity for the realization of the first multi-messenger observation of these events. In this work, we present the prospects of detecting neutrinos produced before (pre-SN) and during a SN while running an advanced cryogenic detector. The recent advancements of the cryogenic detector technique and the discovery of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering offer a wealth of opportunities in neutrino detection. The combination of the excellent energy resolution of this experimental technique, with the high cross section of this detection channel and its equal sensitivity to all neutrino flavors enables the realization of highly sensitive cm-scale neutrino telescopes, as the newly proposed RES-NOVA experiment. We present a detailed study on the detection promptness of pre-SN and SN neutrino signals, with direct comparisons among different classes of test statistics. While the well-established Poisson test offers in general best performance under optimal conditions, the non-parametric Recursive Product of Spacing statistical test (RPS) is more robust and ideal for triggering astrophysical neutrino signals with no specific prior knowledge. Based on our statistical tests the RES-NOVA experiment is able to identify SN neutrino signals at a 15 kpc distance with 95% of success rate, and pre-SN signal as far as 480 pc with a pre-warn time of the order of 10 s. Significance: Histopathological analysis of tissues is an essential tool for grading, staging, diagnosing and resecting cancers and other malignancies. Current histopathological techniques require substantial sample processing prior to staining with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) dyes, to highlight nuclear and cellular morphology. Sample preparation and staining is resource-intensive and introduces potential for variability during sample preparation. Aim: We present a novel method for direct label-free histopathological assessment of formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks and thin tissue sections using a dual contrast photoacoustic remote sensing (PARS) microscopy system. Approach: To emulate the nuclear and cellular contrast of H&E staining, we leverage unique properties of the PARS system. Here the ultraviolet excitation of the PAARS microscope takes advantage of DNA's unique optical absorption to provide nuclear contrast analogous to hematoxylin staining of cell nucelli. Concurrently, the optical scattering contrast of the PARS detection system is leveraged to provide bulk tissue contrast analogous to eosin staining of cell membranes. Results: We demonstrate the efficacy of this technique by imaging human breast tissue and human skin tissues in formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks and frozen sections respectively. Salient nuclear and extra-nuclear features such as cancerous cells, glands and ducts, adipocytes, and stromal structures such as collagen. Conclusions. The presented dual contrast PARS microscope enables label-free visualizations of tissue with contrast and quality analogous to the current gold standard for histopathological analysis. Molecular docking is an important step of the drug discovery process which aims at calculating the preferred position and shape of one molecule to a second when they are bound to each other. During such analysis, 3D representations of molecules are manipulated according to their degree of freedoms: rigid roto-translation and fragment rotations along the rotatable bonds. In our work, we focussed on one specific phase of the molecular docking procedure i.e. molecular unfolding (MU), which is used to remove the initial bias of a molecule by expanding it to an unfolded shape simpler to manipulate within the target cavity. The objective of the MU problem is to find the configuration that maximizes the molecular area, or equivalently, that maximizes the internal distances between atoms inside the molecule. We propose a quantum annealing approach to MU by formulating it as a high-order unconstrained binary optimization which was possible to solve on the latest D-wave annealing hardware (2000Q and advantage). Results and performances obtained with quantum annealers are compared with state of art classical solvers.

Reliable methods for the classification and quantification of quantum entanglement are fundamental to understanding its exploitation in quantum technologies. One such method, known as Separable Neural Network Quantum States (SNNS), employs a neural network inspired parameterisation of quantum states whose entanglement properties are explicitly programmable. Combined with generative machine learning methods, this ansatz allows for the study of very specific forms of entanglement which can be used to infer/measure entanglement properties of target quantum states. In this work, we extend the use of SNNS to mixed, multipartite states, providing a versatile and efficient tool for the investigation of intricately entangled quantum systems. We illustrate the effectiveness of our method through a number of examples, such as the computation of novel tripartite entanglement measures, and the approximation of ultimate upper bounds for qudit channel capacities., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

The Teukolsky Master Equation describes the dynamics of massless fields with spin on a Kerr black hole. Under separation of variables, spin-reversal for this equation is accomplished through the so-called Teukolsky--Starobinsky identities. These identities are associated to the so-called Teukolsky--Starobinsky constants, which are spin-dependent. We collect some properties of the Teukolsky--Starobinsky constants and dispel some myths present in the literature. We show that, contrary to popular belief, these constants can be negative for spin larger than 2. Such fields thus exhibit a novel form of energy amplification which occurs for non-superradiant frequencies., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Through numerical simulations of boson-star head-on collisions, we explore the quality of binary initial data obtained from the superposition of single-star spacetimes. Our results demonstrate that evolutions starting from a plain superposition of individual boosted boson-star spacetimes are vulnerable to significant unphysical artefacts. These difficulties can be overcome with a simple modification of the initial data suggested in [PRD 99 (2018) 044046] for collisions of oscillatons. While we specifically consider massive complex scalar field boson star models up to a 6th-order-polynomial potential, we argue that this vulnerability is universal and present in other kinds of exotic compact systems and hence needs to be addressed., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Classical Quantum Gravity

The successes of this approach have motivated a line of research into incorporating other symmetries into deep learning methods, in the form of group equivariant convolutional neural networks. Much of this work has been focused on roto-translational symmetry of R d , but other examples are the scaling symmetry of R d and rotational symmetry of the sphere. In this work, we demonstrate that group equivariant convolutional operations can naturally be incorporated into learned reconstruction methods for inverse problems that are motivated by the variational regularisation approach. Indeed, if the regularisation functional is invariant under a group symmetry, the corresponding proximal operator will satisfy an equivariance property with respect to the same group symmetry. As a result of this observation, we design learned iterative methods in which the proximal operators are modelled as group equivariant convolutional neural networks. We use roto-translationally equivariant operations in the proposed methodology and apply it to the problems of low-dose computerised tomography reconstruction and subsampled magnetic resonance imaging reconstruction. The proposed methodology is demonstrated to improve the reconstruction quality of a learned reconstruction method with a little extra computational cost at training time but without any extra cost at test time.

Using various techniques from dynamical systems theory, we rigorously study an experimentally validated model by [Barkley et al 2015 Nature 526 550–3], which describes the rise of turbulent pipe flow via a PDE system of reduced complexity. The fast evolution of turbulence is governed by reaction-diffusion dynamics coupled to the centerline velocity, which evolves with advection of Burgers’ type and a slow relaminarization term. Applying to this model a spatial dynamics ansatz and geometric singular perturbation theory, we prove the existence of a heteroclinic loop between a turbulent and a laminar steady state and establish a cascade of bifurcations of various traveling waves mediating the transition to turbulence. The most complicated behaviour can be found in an intermediate Reynolds number regime, where the traveling waves exhibit arbitrarily long periodic-like dynamics indicating the onset of chaos. Our analysis provides a systematic mathematical approach to identifying the transition to spatio–temporal turbulent structures that may also be applicable to other models arising in fluid dynamics.

Significance: Spatial frequency-domain imaging (SFDI) is a powerful technique for mapping tissue oxygen saturation over a wide field of view. However, current SFDI methods either require a sequence of several images with different illumination patterns or, in the case of single-snapshot optical properties (SSOP), introduce artifacts and sacrifice accuracy. Aim: We introduce OxyGAN, a data-driven, content-aware method to estimate tissue oxygenation directly from single structured-light images. Approach: OxyGAN is an end-to-end approach that uses supervised generative adversarial networks. Conventional SFDI is used to obtain ground truth tissue oxygenation maps for ex vivo human esophagi, in vivo hands and feet, and an in vivo pig colon sample under 659- and 851-nm sinusoidal illumination. We benchmark OxyGAN by comparing it with SSOP and a two-step hybrid technique that uses a previously developed deep learning model to predict optical properties followed by a physical model to calculate tissue oxygenation. Results: When tested on human feet, cross-validated OxyGAN maps tissue oxygenation with an accuracy of 96.5%. When applied to sample types not included in the training set, such as human hands and pig colon, OxyGAN achieves a 93% accuracy, demonstrating robustness to various tissue types. On average, OxyGAN outperforms SSOP and a hybrid model in estimating tissue oxygenation by 24.9% and 24.7%, respectively. Finally, we optimize OxyGAN inference so that oxygenation maps are computed ∼10 times faster than previous work, enabling video-rate, 25-Hz imaging. Conclusions: Due to its rapid acquisition and processing speed, OxyGAN has the potential to enable real-time, high-fidelity tissue oxygenation mapping that may be useful for many clinical applications.

Indirect imaging problems in biomedical optics generally require repeated evaluation of forward models of radiative transport, for which Monte Carlo is accurate yet computationally costly. We develop a novel approach to reduce this bottleneck which has significant implications for quantitative tomographic imaging in a variety of medical and industrial applications. Using Monte Carlo we compute a fully stochastic gradient of an objective function for a given imaging problem. Leveraging techniques from the machine learning community we then adaptively control the accuracy of this gradient throughout the iterative inversion scheme, in order to substantially reduce computational resources at each step. For example problems of Quantitative Photoacoustic Tomography and Ultrasound Modulated Optical Tomography, we demonstrate that solutions are attainable using a total computational expense that is comparable to (or less than) that which is required for a single high accuracy forward run of the same Monte Carlo model. This approach demonstrates significant computational savings when approaching the full non-linear inverse problem of optical property estimation using stochastic methods., Comment: 24 Pages, 11 figures

We use a combination of extreme value theory, survival analysis and computer-intensive methods to analyze the mortality of Italian and French semi-supercentenarians for whom there are validated records. After accounting for the effects of the sampling frame, there appears to be a constant rate of mortality beyond age 108 years and no difference between countries and cohorts. These findings are consistent with previous work based on the International Database on Longevity and suggest that any physical upper bound for humans is so large that it is unlikely to be approached. There is no evidence of differences in survival between women and men after age 108 in the Italian data and the International Database on Longevity; however survival is lower for men in the French data., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Biomedical photoacoustic tomography, which can provide high resolution 3D soft tissue images based on the optical absorption, has advanced to the stage at which translation from the laboratory to clinical settings is becoming possible. The need for rapid image formation and the practical restrictions on data acquisition that arise from the constraints of a clinical workflow are presenting new image reconstruction challenges. There are many classical approaches to image reconstruction, but ameliorating the effects of incomplete or imperfect data through the incorporation of accurate priors is challenging and leads to slow algorithms. Recently, the application of Deep Learning, or deep neural networks, to this problem has received a great deal of attention. This paper reviews the literature on learned image reconstruction, summarising the current trends, and explains how these new approaches fit within, and to some extent have arisen from, a framework that encompasses classical reconstruction methods. In particular, it shows how these new techniques can be understood from a Bayesian perspective, providing useful insights. The paper also provides a concise tutorial demonstration of three prototypical approaches to learned image reconstruction. The code and data sets for these demonstrations are available to researchers. It is anticipated that it is in in vivo applications - where data may be sparse, fast imaging critical and priors difficult to construct by hand - that Deep Learning will have the most impact. With this in mind, the paper concludes with some indications of possible future research directions.

This moisture model contains closures for the phase changes condensation and evaporation, as well as the processes of auto conversion of cloud water into rainwater and the collection of cloud water by the falling rain droplets. It has been used by Klein and Majda in [17] and corresponds to a basic form of the bulk microphysics closure in the spirit of Kessler [16] and Grabowski and Smolarkiewicz [12]. The moisture balances are strongly coupled to the thermodynamic equation via the latent heat associated to the phase changes. In [14] we assumed the velocity field to be given and proved rigorously the global existence and uniqueness of uniformly bounded solutions of the moisture balances coupled to the thermodynamic equation. In this paper we present the solvability of a full moist atmospheric flow model, where the moisture model is coupled to the primitive equations of atmospherical dynamics governing the velocity field. For the derivation of a priori estimates for the velocity field we thereby use the ideas of Cao and Titi [6], who succeeded in proving the global solvability of the primitive equations.

The Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE) develops the first plasma wakefield accelerator with a high-energy proton bunch as driver. The 400GeV bunch from CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) propagates through a 10m long rubidium plasma, ionized by a 4TW laser pulse co-propagating with the proton bunch. The relativistic ionization front seeds a self-modulation process. The seeded self-modulation transforms the bunch into a train of micro-bunches resonantly driving wakefields. We measure the density modulation of the bunch, in time, with a streak camera with picosecond resolution. The observed effect corresponds to alternating focusing and defocusing fields. We present a procedure recovering the charge of the bunch from the experimental streak camera images containing the charge density. These studies are important to determine the charge per micro-bunch along the modulated proton bunch and to understand the wakefields driven by the modulated bunch., Comment: EAAC2019 Conference Proceedings, 9 pages, 16 figures
