If $X$ is a quasi Banach space containing no copy of $c_0$ which is isomorphic to a closed subspace of a space with a basis and $C(I, X)$ is linearly homeomorphic to $C(\Delta, X)$, then $X$ is locally convex, i.e., a Banach space. It is shown that Kalton result is sharp by exhibiting non locally convex quasi Banach spaces X with a basis for which $C(I, X)$ and $C(\Delta, X)$ are isomorphic. We develop a theoretical framework for rigid origami, and show how this framework can be used to connect rigid origami and results from cognate areas, such as the rigidity theory, graph theory, linkage folding and computer science. First, we give definitions on important concepts in rigid origami, then focus on how to describe the configuration space of a creased paper. We show that bounded self-contracted curves are rectifiable in metric spaces with weak lower curvature bound in a sense we introduce in this article. This class of spaces is wide and includes, for example, finite-dimensional Alexandrov spaces of curvature bounded below and Berwald spaces of nonnegative flag curvature. (To be more precise, our condition is regarded as a strengthened doubling condition and holds also for a certain class of metric spaces with upper curvature bound.) We also provide the non-embeddability of large snowflakes into (balls in) metric spaces in the same class. We follow the strategy of the last author's previous paper based on the small rough angle condition, where spaces with upper curvature bound are considered. Despite being similar in structure, functioning, and size viral pathogens enjoy very different mostly well-defined ways of life. They occupy their hosts for a few days (influenza), for a few weeks (measles), or even lifelong (HCV), which manifests in acute or chronic infections. The various transmission routes (airborne, via direct contact, etc.), degrees of infectiousness (referring to the load required for transmission), antigenic variation/immune escape and virulence define further pathogenic lifestyles. To survive pathogens must infect new hosts; the success determines their fitness. Infection happens with a certain likelihood during contact of hosts, where contact can also be mediated by vectors. Besides structural aspects of the host-contact network, three parameters/concepts appear to be key: the contact rate and the infectiousness during contact, which encode the mode of transmission, and third the immunity of susceptible hosts. From here, what can be concluded about the evolutionary strategies of viral pathogens? This is the biological question addressed in this paper. The answer extends earlier results (Lange & Ferguson 2009, PLoS Comput Biol 5 (10): e1000536) and makes explicit connection to another basic work on the evolution of pathogens (Grenfell et al. 2004, Science 303: 327-332). A mathematical framework is presented that models intra- and inter-host dynamics in a minimalistic but unified fashion covering a broad spectrum of viral pathogens, including those that cause flu-like infections, childhood diseases, and sexually transmitted infections. In convex integer programming, various procedures have been developed to strengthen convex relaxations of sets of integer points. On the one hand, there exist several general-purpose methods that strengthen relaxations without specific knowledge of the set S of feasible integer points, such as popular linear programming or semi-definite programming hierarchies. On the other hand, various methods have been designed for obtaining strengthened relaxations for very specific sets S that arise in combinatorial optimization. We propose a new efficient method that interpolates between these two approaches. Our procedure strengthens any convex set containing a set S⊆ { 0 ,1 } n by exploiting certain additional information about S. Namely, the required extra information will be in the form of a Boolean formula ϕ defining the target set S. The new relaxation is obtained by “feeding” the convex set into the formula ϕ. We analyze various aspects regarding the strength of our procedure. In 1981, Foias, Guillop\'e and Temam proved a priori estimates for arbitrary-order space derivatives of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation. Such bounds are instructive in the numerical investigation of intermittency often observed in simulations, e.g., numerical study of vorticity moments by Donzis et al. (2013) revealed depletion of nonlinearity that may be responsible for smoothness of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation. We employ an original method to derive analogous estimates for space derivatives of three-dimensional space-periodic weak solutions to the evolutionary equations of diffusive magnetohydrodynamics. Construction relies on space analyticity of the solutions at almost all times. An auxiliary problem is introduced, and a Sobolev norm of its solutions bounds from below the size in $C^3$ of the region of space analyticity of the solutions to the original problem. We recover the exponents obtained earlier for the hydrodynamic problem. The same approach is also followed here to derive and prove similar a priori bounds for arbitrary-order space derivatives of the first-order time derivative of the weak MHD solutions. The aim of this paper is to show time-decay estimates of solutions to linearized two-phase Navier-Stokes equations with surface tension and gravity. The original two-phase Navier-Stokes equations describe the two-phase incompressible viscous flow with a sharp interface that is close to the hyperplane xN=0 in the N-dimensional Euclidean space, N≥2. It is well-known that the Rayleigh–Taylor instability occurs when the upper fluid is heavier than the lower one, while this paper assumes that the lower fluid is heavier than the upper one and proves time-decay estimates of Lp-Lq type for the linearized equations. Our approach is based on solution formulas for a resolvent problem associated with the linearized equations.

The paper is concerned with the problem of identifying the norm attaining operators in the von Neumann algebra generated by two orthogonal projections on a Hilbert space. This paper considers the use of Robust PCA in a CUR decomposition framework and applications thereof. Our main algorithms produce a robust version of column-row factorizations of matrices $\mathbf{D}=\mathbf{L}+\mathbf{S}$ where $\mathbf{L}$ is low-rank and $\mathbf{S}$ contains sparse outliers. These methods yield interpretable factorizations at low computational cost, and provide new CUR decompositions that are robust to sparse outliers, in contrast to previous methods. We consider two key imaging applications of Robust PCA: video foreground-background separation and face modeling. This paper examines the qualitative behavior of our Robust CUR decompositions on the benchmark videos and face datasets, and find that our method works as well as standard Robust PCA while being significantly faster. Additionally, we consider hybrid randomized and deterministic sampling methods which produce a compact CUR decomposition of a given matrix, and apply this to video sequences to produce canonical frames thereof.

A nonlinear Markov chain is a discrete time stochastic process whose transitions depend on both the current state and the current distribution of the process. The nonlinear Markov chain over an infinite state space can be identified by a continuous mapping (the so-called nonlinear Markov operator) defined on a set of all probability distributions (which is a simplex). In the present paper, we consider a continuous analogue of the mentioned mapping acting on L 1 -spaces. Main aim of the current paper is to investigate projective surjectivity of quadratic stochastic operators (QSO) acting on the set of all probability measures. To prove the main result, we study the surjectivity of infinite dimensional nonlinear Markov operators and apply them to the projective surjectivity of the considered QSO. Furthermore, the obtained results are applied to the existence of the positive solution of some Hammerstein integral equations.

Several results in the existing literature establish Euclidean density theorems of the following strong type. These results claim that every set of positive upper Banach density in the Euclidean space of an appropriate dimension contains isometric copies of all sufficiently large elements of a prescribed family of finite point configurations. So far, all results of this type discussed linear isotropic dilates of a fixed point configuration. In this paper we initiate the study of analogous density theorems for families of point configurations generated by anisotropic dilations, i.e., families with power-type dependence on a single parameter interpreted as their size. More specifically, here we prove nonisotropic power-type generalizations of a result by Bourgain on vertices of a simplex, a result by Lyall and Magyar on vertices of a rectangular box, and a result on distance trees, which is a particular case of the treatise of distance graphs by Lyall and Magyar. Another source of motivation for this paper is providing additional evidence for the versatility of the approach stemming from the work of Cook, Magyar, and Pramanik and its modification used recently by Durcik and the present author. In 1900, at the international congress of mathematicians, Hilbert claimed that the Riemann zeta function $\zeta(s)$ is not the solution of any algebraic ordinary differential equations on its region of analyticity. In 2015, Van Gorder considered the question of whether $\zeta(s)$ satisfies a non-algebraic differential equation and showed that it formally satisfies an infinite order linear differential equation. Recently, Prado and Klinger-Logan extended Van Gorder's result to show that the Hurwitz zeta function $\zeta(s,a)$ is also formally satisfies a similar differential equation \begin{equation*}\label{HurDE} T\left[\zeta (s,a) - \frac{1}{a^s}\right] = \frac{1}{(s-1)a^{s-1}}. \end{equation*} But unfortunately in the same paper they proved that the operator $T$ applied to Hurwitz zeta function $\zeta(s,a)$ does not converge at any point in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper we investigate the property (HLUR), a generalisation of (LUR) property of a Banach space. A Banach space having the property (HLUR) is called an HLUR space. We characterise (HLUR) property with the help of known geometric properties and study various properties of HLUR spaces. We show that for any finite dimensional Banach space, the property (HLUR) coincides with anti-Daugavet property of the space. We study numerical integration for a weighted Korobov space of analytic periodic functions for which the Fourier coefficients decay exponentially fast. In particular, we are interested in how the error depends on the dimension d . Many recent papers deal with this problem or similar problems and provide matching necessary and sufficient conditions for various notions of tractability. In most cases even simple algorithms are known which allow to achieve these notions of tractability. However, there is a gap in the literature: while for the notion of exponential-weak tractability one knows matching necessary and sufficient conditions, so far no explicit algorithm has been known which yields the desired result. In this paper we close this gap and prove that Korobov lattice rules are suitable algorithms in order to achieve exponential-weak tractability for integration in weighted Korobov spaces of analytic periodic functions.

We consider a class of tempered subordinators, namely a class of subordinators with one-dimensional marginal tempered distributions which belong to a family studied in [3]. The main contribution in this paper is a non-central moderate deviations result. More precisely we mean a class of large deviation principles that fill the gap between the (trivial) weak convergence of some non-Gaussian identically distributed random variables to their common law, and the convergence of some other related random variables to a constant. Some other minor results concern large deviations for the inverse of the tempered subordinators considered in this paper; actually, in some results, these inverse processes appear as random time-changes of other independent processes.

This paper considers an edge minimization problem in saturated bipartite graphs. An $n$ by $n$ bipartite graph $G$ is $H$-saturated if $G$ does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $H$ but adding any missing edge to $G$ creates a copy of $H$. More than half a century ago, Wessel and Bollob\'as independently solved the problem of minimizing the number of edges in $K_{(s,t)}$-saturated graphs, where $K_{(s,t)}$ is the `ordered' complete bipartite graph with $s$ vertices from the first color class and $t$ from the second. However, the very natural `unordered' analogue of this problem was considered only half a decade ago by Moshkovitz and Shapira. When $s=t$, it can be easily checked that the unordered variant is exactly the same as the ordered case. Later, Gan, Kor\'andi, and Sudakov gave an asymptotically tight bound on the minimum number of edges in $K_{s,t}$-saturated $n$ by $n$ bipartite graphs, which is only smaller than the conjecture of Moshkovitz and Shapira by an additive constant. In this paper, we confirm their conjecture for $s=t-1$ with the classification of the extremal graphs. In his PhD thesis, Goosen combined the string-net and the generators-and-relations formalisms for arbitrary once-extended 3-dimensional TQFTs. In this paper we work this out in detail for the simplest non-trivial example, where the underlying spherical fusion category is the category of $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-graded vector spaces. This allows us to give an elementary string-net description of the linear maps associated to 3-dimensional bordisms. The string-net formalism also simplifies the description of the mapping class group action in the resulting TQFT. We prove that ascending HNN extensions of free groups are word-hyperbolic if and only if they have no Baumslag-Solitar subgroups. This extends the theorem of Brinkmann that free-by-cyclic groups are word-hyperbolic if and only if they have no free abelian subgroups of rank 2. The paper is split into two independent parts: 1) We study the dynamics of injective nonsurjective endomorphisms of free groups. We prove a canonical structure theorem that initializes the development of improved relative train tracks for endomorphisms; this structure theorem is of independent interest since it makes many open questions about injective endomorphisms tractable. 2) As an application of the structure theorem, we are able to (relatively) combine Brinkmann's theorem with our previous work and obtain the main result stated above. International audience; We present a new notion of solution for mean field games master equations. This notion allows us to work with solutions which are merely continuous. We prove first results of uniqueness and stability for such solutions. It turns out that this notion is helpful to characterize the value function of mean field games of optimal stopping or impulse control and this is the topic of the second half of this paper. The notion of solution we introduce is only useful in the monotone case. We focus in this paper in the finite state space case.

We study in detail the so-called Chow-weight homology of Voevodsky motivic complexes and relate it to motivic homology. We generalize earlier results and prove that the vanishing of higher motivic homology groups of a motif $M$ implies similar vanishing for its Chow-weight homology along with effectivity properties of the higher terms of its weight complex $t(M)$ and of higher Deligne weight quotients of its cohomology. Applying this statement to motives with compact support we obtain a similar relation between the vanishing of Chow groups and the cohomology with compact support of varieties. Moreover, we prove that if higher motivic homology groups of a geometric motif or a variety over a universal domain are torsion (in a certain "range") then the exponents of these groups are uniformly bounded. To prove our main results we study Voevodsky slices of motives. Since the slice functors do not respect the compactness of motives, the results of the previous Chow-weight homology paper are not sufficient for our purposes; this is our main reason to extend them to ($w_{Chow}$-bounded below) motivic complexes., Comment: This a new paper on Chow-weight homology; thus it is closely related to extending the decomposition of the diagonal theory to Voevodsky motives. We investigate the time-asymptotically nonlinear stability of rarefaction waves to the Cauchy problem of an one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes type system for a viscous, compressible, radiative and reactive gas, where the constitutive relations for the pressure $p$, the specific internal energy $e$, the specific volume $v$, the absolute temperature $\theta$, and the specific entropy $s$ are given by $p=R\theta/v +a\theta^4/3$, $e=C_v\theta+av\theta^4$, and $s=C_v\ln \theta+ 4av\theta^3/3+R\ln v$ with $R>0$, $C_{v}>0$, and $a>0$ being the perfect gas constant, the specific heat and the radiation constant, respectively. For such a specific gas motion, a somewhat surprising fact is that, general speaking, the pressure $\widetilde{p}(v,s)$ is not a convex function of the specific volume $v$ and the specific entropy $s$. Even so, we show in this paper that the rarefaction waves are time-asymptotically stable for large initial perturbation provided that the radiation constant $a$ and the strength of the rarefaction waves are sufficiently small. The key point in our analysis is to deduce the positive lower and upper bounds on the specific volume and the absolute temperature, which are uniform with respect to the space and the time variables, but are independent of the radiation constant $a$., Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication in SCIENCE CHINA Mathematics

In this paper, using computations done through the LiE software, we compare the tensor product of irreducible selfdual representations of the special linear group with those of classical groups to formulate some conjectures relating the two. In the process a few other phenomenon present themselves which we record as questions. More precisely, under the natural correspondence of irreducible finite dimensional selfdual representations of ${\rm SL}_{2n}({\mathbb C})$ with those of ${\rm Spin}_{2n+1}({\mathbb C})$, it is easy to see that if the tensor product of three irreducible representations of ${\rm Spin}_{2n+1}({\rm C})$ contains the trivial representation, then so does the tensor product of the corresponding representations of ${\rm SL}_{2n}({\rm C})$. This work is devoted to the studies of a Hamilton--Jacobi equation with a quadratic and degenerate Hamiltonian, which comes from the dynamics of a multipeakon in the Camassa--Holm equation. It is given by a quadratic form with a singular positive semi-definite matrix. We increase the regularity of the value function considered in our previous paper, which is known to be the viscosity solution. We prove that for a two-peakon Hamiltonian such solutions are actually $1/2$-H\"{o}lder continuous in space and time-Lipschitz continuous. The time-Lipschitz regularity is proven in any dimension $N\geq 1$. Such a regularity is already known in the one-dimensional simplifications, moreover it is the best possible, as was shown in our previous papers.

In this paper, we consider a system of initial boundary value problems for parabolic equations, as a generalized version of the "$ \phi $-$ \eta $-$ \theta $ model" of grain boundary motion, proposed by Kobayashi [16]. The system is a coupled system of: an Allen--Cahn type equation as in (1.1) with a given temperature source; and a phase-field model of grain boundary motion, known as "Kobayashi--Warren--Carter type model". The focus of the study is on a special kind of solution, called energy-dissipative solution, which is to reproduce the energy-dissipation of the governing energy in time. This paper considers random processes of the form $$X_{n+1}=a_nX_n+b_n\pmod p$$ where p is odd, $$X_0=0$$ , $$(a_0,b_0), (a_1,b_1), (a_2,b_2),\ldots $$ are i.i.d., and $$a_n$$ and $$b_n$$ are independent with $$P(a_n=2)=P(a_n=(p+1)/2)=1/2$$ and $$P(b_n=1)=P(b_n=0)=P(b_n=-1)=1/3$$ . This can be viewed as a multiplicatively symmetrized version of a random process of Chung, Diaconis, and Graham. This paper shows that order $$(\log p)^2$$ steps suffice for $$X_n$$ to be close to uniformly distributed on the integers mod p for all odd p while order $$(\log p)^2$$ steps are necessary for $$X_n$$ to be close to uniformly distributed on the integers mod p.

This is the first of two papers which attempt to comprehensively analyse superdeterministic hidden-variables models of Bell correlations. We first give an overview of superdeterminism and discuss various criticisms of it raised in the literature. We argue that the most common criticism, the violation of `free-will', is incorrect. We take up Bell's intuitive criticism that these models are `conspiratorial'. To develop this further, we introduce nonequilibrium extensions of superdeterministic models. We show that the measurement statistics of these extended models depend on the physical system used to determine the measurement settings. This suggests a fine-tuning in order to eliminate this dependence from experimental observation. We also study the signalling properties of these extended models. We show that although they generally violate the formal no-signalling constraints, this violation cannot be equated to an actual signal. We therefore suggest that the so-called no-signalling constraints be more appropriately named the marginal-independence constraints. We discuss the mechanism by which marginal-independence is violated in superdeterministic models. Lastly, we consider a hypothetical scenario where two experimenters use the apparent-signalling of a superdeterministic model to communicate with each other. This scenario suggests another conspiratorial feature peculiar to superdeterminism. These suggestions are quantitatively developed in the second paper., Comment: Post-print version

The singular set of a viscosity solution to a Hamilton-Jacobi equation is known to propagate, from any noncritical singular point, along singular characteristics which are curves satisfying certain differential inclusions. In the literature, different notions of singular characteristics were introduced. However, a general uniqueness criterion for singular characteristics, not restricted to mechanical systems or problems in one space dimension, is missing at the moment. In this paper, we prove that, for a Tonelli Hamiltonian on $\mathbb{R}^2$, two different notions of singular characteristics coincide up to a bi-Lipschitz reparameterization. As a significant consequence, we obtain a uniqueness result for the class of singular characteristics that was introduced by Khanin and Sobolevski in the paper [On dynamics of Lagrangian trajectories for Hamilton-Jacobi equations. This paper applies a symmetry-adapted method to examine the influence of deformation and defects on the electronic structure and band structure in carbon nanotubes. First, the symmetry-adapted approach is used to develop the analog of Bloch waves. Building on this, the technique of perfectly-matched layers is applied to develop a method to truncate the computational domain of electronic structure calculations without spurious size effects. This provides an efficient and accurate numerical approach to compute the electronic structure and electromechanics of defects in nanotubes. The computational method is applied to study the effect of twist, stretch, and bending, with and without various types of defects, on the band structure of nanotubes. Specifically, the effect of stretch and twist on band structure in defect-free conducting and semiconducting nanotubes is examined, and the interaction with vacancy defects is elucidated. Next, the effect of localized bending or kinking on the electronic structure is studied. Finally, the paper examines the effect of 5-8-5 Stone-Wales defects. In all of these settings, the perfectly-matched layer method enables the calculation of localized non-propagating defect modes with energies in the bandgap of the defect-free nanotube., Comment: To appear in Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids

We consider the cases where there is equality in Courant’s nodal domain theorem for the Laplacian with a Robin boundary condition on the square. In our previous two papers, we treated the cases where the Robin parameter h > 0 is large, small respectively. In this paper we investigate the case where h < 0.

This article presents a reformulation of the Theory of Functional Connections: a general methodology for functional interpolation that can embed a set of user-specified linear constraints. The reformulation presented in this paper exploits the underlying functional structure presented in the seminal paper on the Theory of Functional Connections to ease the derivation of these interpolating functionals&mdash, called constrained expressions&mdash, and provides rigorous terminology that lends itself to straightforward derivations of mathematical proofs regarding the properties of these constrained expressions. Furthermore, the extension of the technique to and proofs in n-dimensions is immediate through a recursive application of the univariate formulation. In all, the results of this reformulation are compared to prior work to highlight the novelty and mathematical convenience of using this approach. Finally, the methodology presented in this paper is applied to two partial differential equations with different boundary conditions, and, when data is available, the results are compared to state-of-the-art methods.

In this paper we consider interpolation problem connected with series by integer shifts of Gaussians. Known approaches for these problems met numerical difficulties. Due to it another method is considered based on finite-rank approximations by linear systems. The main result for this approach is to establish correctness of the finite-rank linear system under consideration. And the main result of the paper is to prove correctness of the finite-rank linear system approximation. For that an explicit formula for the main determinant of the linear system is derived to demonstrate that it is non-zero., Comment: 12 pages

Gravitational waves (GWs) produced by sound waves in the primordial plasma during a strong first-order phase transition in the early Universe are going to be a main target of the upcoming Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) experiment. In this short note, I draw a global picture of LISA&rsquo, s expected sensitivity to this type of GW signal, based on the concept of peak-integrated sensitivity curves (PISCs) recently introduced in two previous papers. In particular, I use LISA&rsquo, s PISC to perform a systematic comparison of several thousands of benchmark points in ten different particle physics models in a compact fashion. The presented analysis (i) retains the complete information on the optimal signal-to-noise ratio, (ii) allows for different power-law indices describing the spectral shape of the signal, (iii) accounts for galactic confusion noise from compact binaries, and (iv) exhibits the dependence of the expected sensitivity on the collected amount of data. An important outcome of this analysis is that, for the considered set of models, galactic confusion noise typically reduces the number of observable scenarios by roughly a factor of two, more or less independent of the observing time. This paper is a fundamental study of the Real $2$-representation theory of $2$-groups. It also contains many new results in the ordinary (non-Real) case. Our framework relies on a $2$-equivariant Morita bicategory, where a novel construction of induction is introduced. We identify the Grothendieck ring of Real $2$-representations as a Real variant of the Burnside ring of the fundamental group of the $2$-group and study the Real categorical character theory. I. M. Milin proposed, in his 1971 paper, a system of inequalities for the logarithmic coefficients of normalized univalent functions on the unit disk of the complex plane. This is known as the Lebedev-Milin conjecture and implies the Robertson conjecture which in turn implies the Bieberbach conjecture. In 1984, Louis de Branges settled the long-standing Bieberbach conjecture by showing the Lebedev-Milin conjecture. Recently, O.~Roth proved an interesting sharp inequality for the logarithmic coefficients based on the proof by de Branges. In this paper, following Roth's ideas, we will show more general sharp inequalities with convex sequences as weight functions and then establish several consequences of them. We also consider the inequality with the help of de Branges system of linear ODE for non-convex sequences where the proof is partly assisted by computer. In this paper, we construct and study a semigroup associated to an action of a countable discrete group on a compact Hausdorff space that can be regarded as a higher dimensional generalization of the type semigroup. We study when this semigroup is almost unperforated. This leads to a new characterization of dynamical comparison and thus answers a question of Kerr and Schafhauser. In addition, this paper suggests a definition of comparison for dynamical systems in which neither the acting group is necessarily amenable nor the action is minimal.

Chen et al. (2004) strongly conjectured that R(Tn,Wm)=2n-1 if the maximum degree of Tn is small and m is even. Related to the conjecture, it is interesting to know for which tree Tn, we have R(Tn,Wm) > 2n-1 for even m. In this paper, we find the Ramsey number R(Tn,W8) for tree Tn with the maximum degree of Tn is at least n-3, namely R(Tn,W8) > 2n-1 for almost all such tree Tn. We also prove that if the maximum degree of Tn is large, then R(Tn,Wm) is a function of both m and n. In the end, we refine the conjecture of Chen et al. by giving the condition of small maximum degree. For a tree Tn with large maximum degree and even m, the R(Tn,Wm) is also unknown in general. In this paper, we shall determine the Ramsey number R(Tn,W8) for all trees Tn of order n with the maximum degree of Tn is at least n-3., 7 pages

Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic. If $M$ is a finite dimensional $G$-module that is projective over the Frobenius kernel of $G$, then its character is divisible by the character of the Steinberg module. This paper is devoted to the question of constructing a higher order Faber spline basis for the sampling discretization of functions with higher regularity than Lipschitz. The basis constructed in this paper has similar properties as the piecewise linear classical Faber–Schauder basis (Faber, 1908) except for the compactness of the support. Although the new basis functions are supported on the real line they are very well localized (exponentially decaying) and the main parts are concentrated on a segment. This construction gives a complete answer to Problem 3.13 in Triebel’s monograph (Triebel, 2012) by extending the classical Faber basis to higher orders. Roughly, the crucial idea to obtain a higher order Faber spline basis is to apply Taylor’s remainder formula to the dual Chui–Wang wavelets. As a first step we explicitly determine these dual wavelets which may be of independent interest. Using this new basis we provide sampling characterizations for Besov and Triebel–Lizorkin spaces and overcome the smoothness restriction coming from the classical piecewise linear Faber–Schauder system. This basis is unconditional and coefficient functionals are computed from discrete function values similar as for the Faber–Schauder situation.

We continue our study, initiated in our earlier paper, of Riemann surfaces with constant curvature and isolated conic singularities. Using the machinery developed in that earlier paper of extended configuration families of simple divisors, we study the existence and deformation theory for spherical conic metrics with some or all of the cone angles greater than $2\pi$. Deformations are obstructed precisely when the number $2$ lies in the spectrum of the Friedrichs extension of the Laplacian. Our main result is that, in this case, it is possible to find a smooth local moduli space of solutions by allowing the cone points to split. Our main interest is the class of pmi means (denoted by PMI). To study PMI, the operator means $$\sigma $$ satisfying $$\begin{aligned} f_\sigma (\sqrt{xy})\le \sqrt{f_\sigma (x)f_\sigma (y)}\quad (x,y>0) \end{aligned}$$are considered in this paper. The set of such means (denoted by GCV) includes certain significant examples and is included in PMI. The main result presented in this paper is that GCV is a proper subset of PMI. In addition, we investigate certain operator-mean classes including PMI.

Nielsen realization problem for the mapping class group $\text{Mod}(S_g)$ asks whether the natural projection $p_g: \text{Homeo}_+(S_g)\to \text{Mod}(S_g)$ has a section. While all the previous results use torsion elements in an essential way, in this paper, we focus on the much more difficult problem of realization of torsion-free subgroups of $\text{Mod}(S_g)$. This paper counts the number of reduced quasigroup words of a particular length in a certain number of generators. Taking account of the relationship with the Catalan numbers, counting words in a free magma, we introduce the term peri-Catalan number for the free quasigroup word counts. The main result of this paper is an exact recursive formula for the peri-Catalan numbers, structured by the Euclidean Algorithm. The Euclidean Algorithm structure does not readily lend itself to standard techniques of asymptotic analysis. However, conjectures for the asymptotic behavior of the peri-Catalan numbers, substantiated by numerical data, are presented. A remarkable aspect of the observed asymptotic behavior is the so-called asymptotic irrelevance of quasigroup identities, whereby cancelation resulting from quasigroup identities has a negligible effect on the asymptotic behavior of the peri-Catalan numbers for long words in a large number of generators.

This paper is concerned with well-posedness of the Cahn-Hilliard equation subject to a class of new dynamic boundary conditions. The system was recently derived in Liu-Wu (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 233 (2019), 167-247) via an energetic variational approach and it naturally fulfills three physical constraints such as mass conservation, energy dissipation and force balance. The target problem examined in this paper can be viewed as a transmission problem that consists of Cahn-Hilliard type equations both in the bulk and on the boundary. In our approach, we are able to deal with a general class of potentials with double-well structure, including the physically relevant logarithmic potential and the non-smooth double-obstacle potential. Existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of global weak solutions are established. The proof is based on a novel time-discretization scheme for the approximation of the continuous problem. Besides, a regularity result is shown with the aim of obtaining a strong solution to the system.

The edit distance between two graphs is a widely used measure of similarity that evaluates the smallest number of vertex and edge deletions/insertions required to transform one graph to another. It is NP-hard to compute in general, and a large number of heuristics have been proposed for approximating this quantity. With few exceptions, these methods generally provide upper bounds on the edit distance between two graphs. In this paper, we propose a new family of computationally tractable convex relaxations for obtaining lower bounds on graph edit distance. These relaxations can be tailored to the structural properties of the particular graphs via convex graph invariants. Specific examples that we highlight in this paper include constraints on the graph spectrum as well as (tractable approximations of) the stability number and the maximum-cut values of graphs. We prove under suitable conditions that our relaxations are tight (i.e., exactly compute the graph edit distance) when one of the graphs consists of few eigenvalues. We also validate the utility of our framework on synthetic problems as well as real applications involving molecular structure comparison problems in chemistry., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures

This paper deals with dynamical optimal transport metrics defined by spatial discretisation of the Benamou--Benamou formula for the Kantorovich metric $W_2$. Such metrics appear naturally in discretisations of $W_2$-gradient flow formulations for dissipative PDE. However, it has recently been shown that these metrics do not in general converge to $W_2$, unless strong geometric constraints are imposed on the discrete mesh. In this paper we prove that, in a $1$-dimensional periodic setting, discrete transport metrics converge to a limiting transport metric with a non-trivial effective mobility. This mobility depends sensitively on the geometry of the mesh and on the non-local mobility at the discrete level. Our result quantifies to what extent discrete transport can make use of microstructure in the mesh to reduce the cost of transport., Comment: 30 pages, minor update

In a recent paper, the authors proved that no spin foliation on a compact enlargeable manifold with Hausdorff homotopy graph admits a metric of positive scalar curvature on its leaves. This result extends groundbreaking results of Lichnerowicz, Gromov and Lawson, and Connes on the non-existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature. In this paper we review in more detail the material needed for the proof of our theorem and we extend our non-existence results to non-compact manifolds of bounded geometry. We also give a first obstruction result for the existence of metrics with (not necessarily uniform) leafwise PSC in terms of the A-hat class in Haefliger cohomology.

For graphs $G$ and $H$, a \emph{homomorphism} from $G$ to $H$ is an edge-preserving mapping from the vertex set of $G$ to the vertex set of $H$. For a fixed graph $H$, by \textsc{Hom($H$)} we denote the computational problem which asks whether a given graph $G$ admits a homomorphism to $H$. If $H$ is a complete graph with $k$ vertices, then \textsc{Hom($H$)} is equivalent to the $k$-\textsc{Coloring} problem, so graph homomorphisms can be seen as generalizations of colorings. It is known that \textsc{Hom($H$)} is polynomial-time solvable if $H$ is bipartite or has a vertex with a loop, and NP-complete otherwise [Hell and Ne\v{s}et\v{r}il, JCTB 1990]. In this paper we are interested in the complexity of the problem, parameterized by the treewidth of the input graph $G$. If $G$ has $n$ vertices and is given along with its tree decomposition of width $\mathrm{tw}(G)$, then the problem can be solved in time $|V(H)|^{\mathrm{tw}(G)} \cdot n^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$, using a straightforward dynamic programming. We explore whether this bound can be improved. We show that if $H$ is a \emph{projective core}, then the existence of such a faster algorithm is unlikely: assuming the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH), the \textsc{Hom($H$)} problem cannot be solved in time $(|V(H)|-\epsilon)^{\mathrm{tw}(G)} \cdot n^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$, for any $\epsilon > 0$. This result provides a full complexity characterization for a large class of graphs $H$, as almost all graphs are projective cores. We also notice that the naive algorithm can be improved for some graphs $H$, and show a complexity classification for all graphs $H$, assuming two conjectures from algebraic graph theory. In particular, there are no known graphs $H$ which are not covered by our result. In the paper we present new examples of unexpected varieties. The research on unexpected varieties started with a paper of Cook II, Harbourne, Migliore and Nagel and was continued in the paper of Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel and Teitler. Here we present three ways of producing unexpected varieties that expand on what was previously known. In the paper of Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel and Teitler, cones on varieties of codimension 2 were used to produce unexpected hypersurfaces. Here we show that cones on positive dimensional varieties of codimension 2 or more almost always give unexpected hypersurfaces. For non-cones, almost all previous work has been for unexpected hypersurfaces coming from finite sets of points. Here we construct unexpected surfaces coming from lines in $\mathbb{P}^3$, and we generalize the construction using birational transformations to obtain unexpected hypersurfaces in higher dimensions., Comment: 15 pages

Generalizing Courant's nodal domain theorem, the "Extended Courant property" is the statement that a linear combination of the first $n$ eigenfunctions has at most $n$ nodal domains. A related question is to estimate the number of connected components of the (super) level sets of a Neumann eigenfunction $u$. Indeed, in this case, the first eigenfunction is constant, and looking at the level sets of $u$ amounts to looking at the nodal sets $\{u-a=0\}$, where $a$ is a real constant. In the first part of the paper, we prove that the Extended Courant property is false for the subequilateral triangle and for regular $N$-gons ($N$ large), with the Neumann boundary condition. More precisely, we prove that there exists a Neumann eigenfunction $u_k$ of the $N$-gon, with labelling $k$, $4 \le k \le 6$, such that the set $\{u_k \not = 1\}$ has $(N+1)$ connected components. In the second part, we prove that there exists a metric $g$ on $\mathbb{T}^2$ (resp. on $\mathbb{S}^2$), which can be chosen arbitrarily close to the flat metric (resp. round metric), and an eigenfunction $u$ of the associated Laplace-Beltrami operator, such that the set $\{u \not = 1\}$ has infinitely many connected components. In particular the Extended Courant property is false for these closed surfaces. These results are strongly motivated by a recent paper by Buhovsky, Logunov and Sodin.
