Many students for whom English is a second language may be reticent in the classroom due to their perceived lack of English language fluency, among other reasons. The study featured in this book investigates the discourses of affective trauma, injustice and identity in the personal language narratives of academic literacy students enrolled into a four-year undergraduate degree programme at a South African university. The study also featured interviews with students and teaching staff, observations of tutorials, observations from the teacher, as well as a comprehensive survey. The purpose of the book is to attempt an analysis of the underlying reasons for the students'apparent reticence and demotivation, and to engender a critical awareness of affective issues in the learning and teaching environment of educators at primary, high school, and tertiary education levels. Affective trauma, and its impact on student success and retention, is an under-researched area of learning and teaching. The book aims to present transformative measures to address these issues. This is an important book for educators, educational policy-makers, curriculum developers, and learning and teaching specialists.

This book argues that literary production in Portuguese-speaking southern Africa has developed distinctive aesthetic idioms that critically respond to crises of global capitalism and related failures of post-colonial governance. Drawing from recent research at the intersection of world-systems analysis and materialist theories of world literature, it identifies and evaluates two generic trends in the post-independence literatures of Mozambique and Angola. From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, there is a marked tendency in Mozambican literary production towards fictional representations of ghosts, spectral effects and gothic narrative techniques. In Angola, there is an analogous outburst of literary expression from the mid-1990s onwards, in which writers increasingly turn towards dystopian images of apocalypse, ecological crisis, and the disintegration of existing modes of social reproduction. Away from a restricted focus on the decline of the post-independence Marxist-Leninist state, the book contends that the upswing in these two genres of writing functions to critically register a world-systemic horizon that both surpasses and includes locally determined, national realities. The patterned repetition of spectral and dystopian forms in Portuguese-speaking southern Africa occurred at a time of heightened capitalisation, in which the region was subjected to newly expropriative forms of accumulation and ecological enclosure via integration into a reconstellated world-system headed by neoliberal finance capital. Through close readings of texts by authors such as Mia Couto, Suleiman Cassamo, Ungulani Ba Ka Khosa, Pepetela, and Ondjaki, this book asks: What factors drove literary production towards the figure of the spectre in Mozambique and towards dystopia in Angola? What emerging energies and social contradictions found shape in these generic idioms in ways that existing vocabularies were unable to express? What does the geo-temporal passage from spectrality to dystopia tell us about the history of capitalist development in southern Africa, and about the restructuring of political-economic parameters across the globe?

The present volume searches for different biblical perceptions of the wild, paying particular attention to the significance of fluid boundaries between the domestic and the wild, and to the options of crossing borders between them. Drawing on space, fauna, and flora, scholars investigate the ways biblical authors present the wild and the domestic and their interactions. In its six chapters and two responses, Hebrew Bible scholars, an archaeobotanist, an archaeologist, a geographer, and iconographers join forces to discuss the wild and its portrayals in biblical literature.The discussions bring to light the entire spectrum of real, imagined, metaphorized, and conceptualized forms of the wild that appear in biblical sources, as also in the material culture and agriculture of ancient Israel, and to some extent observe the great gap between biblical observations and modern studies of geography and of mapping that marks the distinctions between “the wilderness” and “the sown.” The book is the first written product presented on two consecutive years (2019, 2020) at the SBL Annual Meetings in the Section: “Nature Imagery and Conceptions of Nature in the Bible.”

Nuestra comprensión de Federico García Lorca siempre se ha construido en diálogo con el archivo. Sin embargo, esta relación y cómo se ha usado no han sido nunca objeto de estudio. ¿Cómo afecta a nuestra visión de Lorca y su obra? ¿Cómo contribuye a la historiografía, la memoria cultural o la teoría y práctica de fondos, de curación o edición? Al entender el acto de archivar como una mediación en sí, este volumen aboga por estudiar, teorizar y exponer los fondos al público de manera que se vea su construcción, las vicisitudes de su existencia y sus narrativas tácitas, para provocar con ello nuevas formas de entender tanto a Lorca como el archivo. En un momento de transición para los estudios lorquianos y de renovado interés en los estudios archivísticos, se busca iniciar una conversación sobre la intersección de ambos desde una perspectiva multidisciplinar que incluya estudios bibliográficos, culturales, museológicos, literarios y performativos. Al plantear el archivo lorquiano como campo de estudio en sí, este libro abre nuevas vías de investigación en una época de particular urgencia para estos y otros fondos.

The book deals with the discourse of a spiritual medicine in Arabic-Islamic sources of the pre-modern period. The focus is on a 13th-century writing:'The Cheering of the Soul'(Mufarriḥ an-nafs) by the Damascene physician Ibn Qāḍī Baʿalbakk, a scholar in the tradition of Ibn Sinā. Based on this source, the author uses a discourse-analytic approach to examine the various ramifications of spiritual medicine that can be traced in the scripture and shows that the associated discourse contains both concrete medical and pharmaceutical orientations and can contribute to an understanding of ethical discourse in Islam.

To the extent that the GDPR applies, the requirements of informed consent as a legal basis are evaluated. Possibilities for data processing without consent are also considered and discussed. This book focuses on the development of Attic comedy as it is evinced in four fragmentary plays by Aristophanes: Polyidus, Daedalus, Aeolosicon, and Cocalus. The significance of these plays lies in the fact that they present characteristics which are not prominent in the extant plays. They are mythological comedies that Aristophanes might have composed as parodies of tragedies. The four dramas exhibit elements largely present in Middle and New Comedy, such as the use and re-use of myths, the production of large-scale burlesque, domestic plots, unfolded outside Attica. This is a book directed to the wider audience, to all enthusiasts of Classics. It facilitates the understanding of an aspect of Aristophanes'work, discernible only within his fragmentary dramas. This study thus revisits Old Comedy and enriches the scholarship with new insights and new discoveries regarding Aristophanes, his literary interactions, as well as his innovating and influential work.

This publication draws attention to the need to regulate liability for material defects when purchasing real estate. The buyer's warranty rights are regularly excluded in the property purchase contract. The buyer can acquire a worthless house due to a material defect without being able to take recourse against his contractual partner. Furthermore, he does not always have the necessary repair costs at his disposal. An economic threat to the buyer's existence is pre-programmed by the exclusion of warranty. The author examines this exclusion of warranty from a historical, legal and economic perspective. He presents possible solutions for a more efficient and fair distribution of risk.

The work analyzes the central question of why the ex officio judicial assessment of unfairness of clauses required under EU law has led to issues in Spain that had no equivalent in German jurisprudence. In connection therewith, the different legal traditions of general terms and conditions in Spain and Germany are examined as well as developments in EU case law and corresponding legislative reactions in Spain. Central aspect of the work is a comparative analysis of the distribution of roles in Spanish and German civil proceedings as well as the examination of procedural peculiarities of specific Spanish civil proceedings and situations, which were subject of the ECJ case law on the ex officio judicial assessment of unfairness of clauses.

This book provides a new view on Luke's Gospel by introducing it as the source of the New Testament. A close reading of the works of Flavius Josephus and Latin inscriptions confirms the validity of the chronological landmarks delivered by the Evangelist. Together these three sources form a cohesive whole like a puzzle with finely-tuned pieces. The Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis, which preserves the oldest known text of the Gospels and Acts written in Greek, attests that the Evangelist fulfilled the purpose of veracity advertised in the preface. The reliability of his work is linked to its early publication, in the decade following the events so that even Mark and Paul had knowledge of it. From this point of view, the “Lukan priority” that preserves the historical truth about Jesus'life, would no longer be just an assumption. In this context, the conditions under which the Third Gospel was written are revealed, and with them, the objectives pursued by those who assumed responsibility for it, and who can be identified. Let us hope these pages will encourage other biblical Scholars to investigate the Third Gospel and Acts from the perspective of the “Lukan priority”.

Critically, the book argues that holiness in its intrinsic nature is about intercession for others. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, holiness is all about intercession, as has been ably demonstrated in this book starting with Abraham, Moses, David, and Solomon and going all the way to Jesus Christ, who sits on the right hand of God interceding for us.
