All multicellular organisms protect themselves from external universe and microorganisms by innate immune system that is constitutively present. Skin innate immune system has several different components composed of epithelial barriers, humoral factors and cellular part. In this review information about skin innate immune system and its components are presented to the reader. Innate immunity, which wasn't adequately interested in previously, is proven to provide a powerfull early protection system, control many infections before the acquired immunity starts and directs acquired immunity to develop optimally. Introduction: Electrodermal activity (EDA) is an electrical activity of eccrine sweat gland stimulated by sympathetic nervous system. Skin conductance level (SCL) is measured with EDA. SCL and sweat gland activity increase in emotional situations, such as high activation, attention or stress. In this study, we investigated whether working in shifts affects attention level of nurses with EDA and explored the relationship between EDA and sex hormone. Methods: The study was carried out on nurses working night shifts (16.00-08.00 h) (n=22) and nurses working without a shift (08.00- 16.00 h) (n=20). Firstly, The Epworth Sleepiness Scale which evaluates a person's daytime sleepiness was applied to the subjects. For EDA measurement, Ag/AgCl electrodes were put on two fingers of their dominant hand. SCL was measured via MP30 system and GSR connection. The blood samples were analyzed for cortisol and ACTH hormone levels to investigate the changes in sleep and circadian rhythm. Results: It was found that there was no statistically significant difference in skin conductance levels between the groups. Moreover, in the comparison of hormone values between the groups, the cortisol levels in night shift nurses were higher than in those working without a shift. Conclusion: Night shift had no significant effect on the attention levels in the nurses. This situation is thought to be related to the fact that the nurses responsible for the night service raise their attention level to the highest point. The reason for higher level of cortisol in nurses working shifts may reflect that cortisol has no effect on the breadth of attention but reflects a high level of stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Specific and nonspecific environmental factors as well as genetic tendency plays role in development of allergic diseases that are the most common chronic disease group in developed countries. The aim of this study was to determine the allergen sensitivity and frequency of allergic diseases in parents of children detected to have allergen sensitivity and an allergic disease. Materials and Methods: Thirty one children aged 8-18 years, diagnosed with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis or asthma and detected to have sensitivity to inhalant allergens on skin prick test (SPT) and their parents were enrolled in this study. SPT results and total immunoglobulin E levels of the children were recorded. Skin prick test with inhalant allergens were applied to the mothers and fathers. Results: Evaluation of SPT revealed positive results in 14 mothers (45.2%) and negative results in 17 mothers (54.8%). Among the fathers, 17 (54.8%) had negative and 14 (45.2%) had positive SPT results. Sensitized allergen type in children did not influence the skin prick test positivity in mothers and fathers significantly (p= 0.88 and p= 0.68 respectively). Conclusion: Skin allergen sensitivity is common in parents of allergic children irrespective of clinical findings. This difference between clinical and allergic sensitization may be attributed to environmental factors. The results of this study indicated that allergen type that the child is sensitized to does not influence the sensitization frequency in parents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis are acari that can be found in hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the skin, especially on face of human. This study was aimed to reveal prevalance of Demodex species in faculty of health science students. Methods: Skin surface biopsy was performed in subjects who completed socio-demographic questionnaire. The samples were examined under a microscope for demodex species. Results: In this study, at least one species of demodex was found to be positive in 47.4% of 270 students. Coexistence of D. folliculorum and D. brevis was observed in most of the subjects (50.8%). In all positive cases, the presence of only Demodex folliculorum or brevis was found in 29.7% and 19.5% respectively. There was no relationship between variables and demodex prevalence. Conclusion: This study showed that demodex species infestation is a common but an ignored health problem in faculty of health science students. (Turkderm 2015; 49: 139-41) [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
