Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is the withdrawal symptoms that occur in the baby shortly after birth from addicted mother. There are reviews about neonatal abstinence syndrome in the literatures but there is not enough study in Turkey Literature includes just some case reports from our country. Signs and symptoms in the neonatal period are nonspecific and it is hard to make correct differential diagnosis for NAS without detail anemnesis. Doubt is the key for evaluation NAS. In this article, it is ained to present the approach of NAS with update literature. We present the follow-up of the baby (born on 32 weeks according to Ballard score) with an unfbllowed pregnancy from a heroin and cannabinoid addicted mother. In the treatment process, we mainly use morphine for the withdrawal symptoms. Our clinical approach is diccussed with the cuirent articles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is becoming a serious problem with increasing rate. The rates of illicit drug use in pregnant women and NAS in Turkey are unknown. Neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and other acute phase reactants are markers of systemic inflammatory response. In this study, we aimed to ascertain the frequency of NAS, and to measure the acute phase reactants and NLR values in infants with NAS. Material and Methods: Infants of the mothers who gave birth in our hospital and whose mothers were found to be suffering from illicit drug dependence were included in the study. Infants who were hospitalized for phototherapy without serious hyperbilirubinemia were allocated as the control group. NAS symptoms were evaluated with the Finnegan score. Hemogram, C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL) levels were measured in the blood samples obtained from the infants in the study groups. NLR and other markers were compared between the groups. Results: The number of NAS cases was found to be 16 in 3989 patients (4.01 / 1000). When hematological parameters were evaluated, the values of NLR were significantly higher in the NAS group (p <0.05). Once the platelet indices in the both groups were evaluated, mean platelet volume (MPV) values were significantly higher in the NAS group (p <0.05). NLR values were found to be higher in infants who received medication due to NAS symptoms (p <0.05). Conclusion: Neonatal Abstinence syndrome is a growing social problem causing serious morbidity and mortality. A certain inflammatory process is triggered in the newborn by subjecting to those illicit drugs during intrauterine period. The usage of drugs during pregnancy affect the fetus and the newborn. In this report, we present findings from a newborn baby, whose mother was epileptic, and was under the treatment of valproic acid and carbamazepine during pregnancy. We have found symptoms of withdrawal syndrome, hyponatremia and feeding problem, which was most probably related to exposure to the mentioned drugs. We have also diagnosed hypomagnesaemia and atrial septal defect 4 milimeters in diameter. There are already many reports about the side effects of valproic acid and carbamazepine usage during pregnancy. To the best of our knowledge, hypomagnesaemia has not yet been reported as a side effect. We think that hypomagnesaemia is also related to the usage of antiepileptics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mothers' psychopathologies and sociodemographic characteristics on exclusive breastfeeding within postpartum 1-1.5 months. In a longitudinal study undertaken in Dr. Zekai Tahir Burak Maternity and Research Hospital between July-October 2006, 657 mothers voluntarily enrolled within 4 to 36 hours postpartum. In the first interview, the mothers completed a questionnaire including maternal, gestational, and neonatal characteristics and a Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), an instrument used for psychopathological evaluations. Only 46% (n=302) of the mothers were reached by telephone between postpartum 1-1.5 months for the second interview. At 1-1.5 months of age, 64.2% of the infants were exclusively breastfed. Exclusively and partially breastfed infants had similar maternal scores of BSI subscales and indexes. Exclusive breastfeeding rate was lower among infants with low family income, employed mother, planned pregnancy, maternal smoking as well as in infants having health problems at birth and excessive crying. Maternal age, education level, maternal illness/anemia during pregnancy, maternal psychological problems within the last year, birth interval, newborn gender, gestational age, birth weight, and delivery method did not influence exclusive breastfeeding within postpartum 1-1.5 months. Overall, exclusive breastfed infants had less health and breastfeeding problems. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that higher family income, maternal employment, planned pregnancy, excessive crying, health problems during the first three days of life, and breastfeeding problems had negative correlations with exclusive breastfeeding between postpartum 1-1.5 months. Sociodemographic characteristics of the family and mother should be regularly assessed for their influence on exclusive breastfeeding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
