This study aims to analyse the metaphors used in user comments about the concept of 'library' in digital participatory dictionaries. The research aims to understand the social perception of libraries and their role in the digital age. The study analysed user comments in Ekşi Dictionary (397 comments) and Uludağ Dictionary (186 comments) using qualitative research method and content analysis technique. The data were analysed within the framework of conceptual metaphor theory and coded using MAXQDA software. As a result of the analysis, the metaphors were grouped under five main themes: metaphors that likened the library to a physical space, a spiritual and mental space, a centre of knowledge and culture, a place of peace and tranquillity, and metaphors that saw it as functionally inadequate. The findings showed that libraries are perceived as not only a source of information but also as institutions of critical importance for social, cultural and individual development. Users' expectations of libraries are multifaceted, and they see these institutions as places of peace, providing opportunities for personal development, reducing social inequalities, and preserving cultural heritage. This study sheds light on reassessing the public perception of libraries and their role in the digital age. The findings provide a new perspective on the place and importance of libraries in contemporary society and offer important insights for shaping future strategies. However, some users found libraries functionally inadequate, indicating that these organisations face challenges in adapting to the needs of the times. As a result, the future of libraries will depend on how they adapt to changing societal needs and technological advances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The aim of this study is to analyze the complaints made on the sikayetvar.com portal about libraries and library services in Turkey from different aspects, taking into account the complaint mechanism, which is becoming more important every day in determining customer perception in almost all sectors. Method: Content analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The data of the study were collected through the sikayetvar.com portal. In this context, 1,256 entries with the expression "library" on the portal between June 2017 and May 2022 were examined. As a result of the preliminary evaluation, 493 entries that were determined to be suitable for the research scope were included. Data analysis was done with the MAXQDA qualitative research program. Findings: As a result of the data analysis, it was determined that most of the complaints were made to the municipal libraries. The complaints were then categorized under the headings of "others", "university library", "public library", "school library" and "national library." Complaints are classified under the title of each library type, with sub-themes under the main themes created as personnel, services, management, physical conditions, and external factors. Implications: While the intensity of the complaints about the libraries reveals some negativities towards the services more clearly, it also points to the existence of the user group who have expectations from the library management, who are interested and demand improvement in services. As a result of the research, it was determined that most of the complaints were about the attitudes and behaviors of the library staff (%16). The complaint texts also reveal the conclusion that users turn to the online platform because they could not get any results because of the complaints they made directly to the relevant institution before filing a complaint online. In addition, a limited number of new service requests and the feedback of institutions in the form of information and response to complaints were determined in the research. Originality: There are various studies on user satisfaction in the literature. The most basic feature that makes this research different from previous studies is that all the complaints examined are based on real events experienced by library users and conveyed by their own words, and complaints made in the online environment, which is becoming more effective and a priority in the complaint mechanism day by day. LIBRARY websites , *INTERNET content , *WEB accessibility , *DIGITAL libraries , *LIBRARY users - Abstract
In this information age, with opportunities offered by information technologies, most of the information sources have moved to electronic environment and libraries have turned into digital libraries by serving their users in the web. In this context, library websites are the primary gateways for the users to access library information resources and services. The aim of this study is to examine university library websites in Turkey in accordance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and to reveal the current situation regarding their accessibility. In this study, which was designed as a descriptive study, WAVE tool was used to evaluate the accessibility of library websites of 183 universities in Turkey continuing their education activities within the 2020-2021 academic year. The key findings show that all university library websites have at least one accessibility error (maximum=123), the "empty link" is the most common accessibility error (n=160), and the majority of websites (93%) have at least one accessibility contrast error. In addition, 97% of library websites have some features that are not directly considered as errors but may negatively affect accessibility. Moreover, it is observed that some library websites do not have mobile compatibility, which also negatively affects website accessibility. This study is expected to be exemplary for other studies on web accessibility in the future, and to contribute to the plans and regulations for improving the accessibility of library websites in our country. DATA management , *DATA libraries , *PERSONALLY identifiable information , *INFORMATION needs , *ACADEMIC libraries , *LIBRARY users , *INFORMATION-seeking behavior - Abstract
University libraries are the institutions that have responsibilities in meeting the information needs of the user groups they serve. As is in other library types, the user records created in university libraries can consist of personal data that can identify the individuals and these data can be linked with individuals' information-seeking behaviors. At this point, the protection of personal data in university libraries from unauthorized access and use is a necessity for these libraries. This study aims to describe the practices carried out in university libraries related to the protection of personal data. According to determined aim, practices about the management of personal data in 15 university libraries in Ankara are analyzed by interviews conducted with library directors. The results have revealed that the personal data recorded in the libraries shows the variety and the user consent for personal data collection and processing is not obtained in almost half of the analyzed libraries. In conclusion, it is detected that there are deficiencies in analyzed universities in terms of collecting, recording, classifying, keeping, and storing personal data, and obtaining consent from the users for collecting and processing their personal data. ACADEMIC libraries , *LIBRARIANS , *LIBRARY users , *PROFESSIONAL staff of universities & colleges , *INFORMATION professionals - Abstract
The provision of library services is a function of an institution's outlook as well as its available resources. Likewise, the "university as a library" approach is related to an institution's ability to satisfy library patrons by meeting user need. Four factors are necessary to implement the "university as a library" approach: well-trained librarians, simple solutions that meet the institution's service requirements, a well-funded budget, and comfortable physical surroundings for library patrons. Another important factor is a fresh and energetic outlook with respect to the provision of library services; specifically, staff members who not only meet the needs of patrons but also provide a welcoming environment for users. Library patrons can find this approach at Bahçeşehir University, where all of their needs are met in a comfortable and peaceful environment without bureaucratic complications. The success of their "University is a Library" approach has compelled Bahcesehir University to share their accomplishment with the rest of the nation through a week-long newspaper campaign. Radon is the major part of the natural indoor radioactivity. It is important to determine the indoor radon concentration for calculating the exposed radiation doses due to radon inhalation. In this study, the radon concentrations were measured in 2008 summer term at Zonguldak Karaelmas University Central Library by using CR-39 passive nuclear track detectors which were located on 12 different points in the library. It was found that, the average radon concentration on the Central Library was 67.1 Bq/m3. It was recorded that a radon concentration value at the new study room on the ground-floor was higher than 400 Bq/m3, TAEK's lower limit value for indoors. This may be a health risk for the library users and especially for the staff. Therefore, necessary precautions that must be taken have been stated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, theses and articles on librarianship and information management focusing on users are studied. Masters and PhD theses along with articles published in the most important periodicals of the field, Türk Kütüphaneciler Derneği Bülteni (1952-1986), Türk Kütüphaneciliğ(1987-2006) and Bilgi Dünyası (2000-2006), are examined. Some 42 out of 239 theses (17.57%) and 44 out of 1788 articles (2.4%) focused on users either directly or indirectly. The majority of such theses (88%) were written after 1990. Content analysis of theses indicates that users have been studied primarily in relation with an information center or system (69%); academicians as a user group was studied most often; survey as a research method was used in 83% of the theses; and, the questionnaire was the most popular data gathering technique. Although no articles emphasizing the users were published before 1971, a growing interest towards the users was detected in 1980s. The number of articles published on the subject significantly increased after 1990. Also, findings on articles indicate that students were the most frequently surveyed user group (40%); subjects such as information literacy and reading habits were studied the most while surveys, questionnaires and interviews were the most popular research methods and data collection techniques. Library ethics is an important research topic because of its conceptual connection with many areas of academic ethics. However, although concerns about ethical issues in librarianship go back to beginning of the twenty century, very few empirical studies have been conducted on this topic. The purpose of this study was to examine library professionals’ and users’ perceptions, experiences and awareness of library ethics. The study group consists of 52 library users and 13 library professionals. Data were obtained via semi-structured interviews and analyzed for coding using NVIVO program. A great number of participants from both groups declared that they were unfamiliar with the notion of library ethics. However, the participants pointed out many issues, situations and behaviors that are very closely related to library ethics. Among others, the most common ethical issues faced in libraries were found damaging library materials, copy rights violations, concealing books, reservation of seats, disturbing others, disrespectful behavior, requesting privilege user rights. Taking care of library materials, fair and equal services, not censoring, providing suitable place for study, helping users, obeying copy rights, professional efficiencies were stated among the institutional ethical responsibilities of libraries.
