- Abstract
Desmoid tumors are histologically benign, however locally aggressive, tumors. They are rare tumors that develop from fibrocytes, connective tissue fascia and musculoaponeurotic fibrous tissues. They are rarely found in thoracic wall and are treated like malignant tumors. Surgery is the most effective and foremost treatment. The chest x-ray of a 57-year-old female patient, who complained of severe shoulder and back pain showed an abnormality in right lung upper zone. The mass was totally excised. The patient had no post-operative problem and was discharged on the post-operative seventh day. Based on pathologic analysis, the diagnosis was reported to be a desmoid tumor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Desmoid tumors are histologically benign fibrous neoplasms originating from the musculoaponeurotic structures throughout the body. Despite their aggressive local infiltration, desmoid tumors lack a metastatic potential. Main locations of the desmoid tumors are the abdominal wall, the proximal extremities and the mesenteric intestine, especially in patients with familial adenomatous poliposis. In this study, we report a 27-year-old woman, who presented with a mass in the right upper side of her abdomen and was diagnosed as abdominal desmoid tumor postoperatively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Desmoid tumors are slowly growing benign fibroblastic neoplasms, with no metastatic potential and local invasive features, which have rarely been described to be pregnancy associated. In this case report we present a case of abdominal desmoid tumor, which was diagnosed during cesarean section. This case emphasizes the importance of detailed examination in pregnant women with refractory pain symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Desmoid tumors are seen rarely in the anterior abdominal wall. We want to present a female patient with a desmoid tumor in the anterior abdominal wall (in the rectus muscle) we treated and followed up. Material and Methods: We assessed the etiological factors, diagnosis and treatment, pathologic findings, follow-up and results after treatment in the patient with a desmoid tumor. Results: Initially, an abdominal ultrasonography was performed. A solid mass in the rectus muscle with a 24-12 mm diameter was observed. The patient is operated. The tumor is removed widely, together with the adjacent uninvolved tissues about 2 cm. Abdominal wall layers were closed conveniently. In the pathological evaluation, it was observed that the fibroblasts had destructed and atrophied the muscle fibrillae. Any postoperative complication or local recurrence was not seen in the long-term follow-up (108 months). Conclusion: The first line therapy is radical surgical resection in desmoid tumors which are seen rarely, particularly in childbearing women and have local invasive characteristics. Local recurrence does not usually occur in tumors which are resected with sufficient surgical margins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to assess clinical characteristics and pathological features of patients diagnosed with fibromatosis. This study was a retrospective cohort study. Hematoxylin-eosin stained sections of materials of 125 cases with diagnosis of fibromatosis were reassessed. Medical records and pathology reports of patients were evaluated according to patients’ age, gender, tumor localization, tumor diameter and reccurence. In superficial fibromatoses, 84 cases were at palmar and 6 cases were at plantar localization. Furthermore, in deep fibromatoses, 6 cases were at abdominal, 4 were at intraabdominal, and 25 were at extraabdominal localization. The mean age of the patients was 50.4±17.4 years. Eighty (64%) of the cases were male and 45 (36%) were female. Male-to-female ratio was 1.7. Mean tumor diameter in superficial fibromatosis was significantly smaller than patients with deep fibromatosis (3.4±1.5 vs. 8.8±5.4 cm). Recurrence rate was higher 14,3% in cases with deep fibromatosis compared to superficial fibromatosis (25.7% vs. 38 14.4%). Our series demonstrated the similar epidemiologic and clinicopathologic features with the literatüre. We determined that diabetes and trauma are frequent comorbidites for superficial and deep fibromatosis in our series. Although, follow-up period (7 years) was short, recurrence rate was high, particularly in deep fibromatoses.

Scar endometriosis is a disease of abdominal wall and generally develops after obstetric or gynecological operations. After caesarean section, prevalence is reported to be between 0.03-0.4% whereas, this increases as high as 5.08% after second trimester hysterotomy. Preoperative diagnosis of scar endometriosis is difficult because scar endometriosis are similar to some pathologies including abcess, lipoma, hematoma, incisional hernia, desmoid tumor, sarcoma, lymphoma and primer or metastatic carcinoma. Menstruation related mass and pain with a palpable subcutaneous lesion in patients with a history of obstetric or gynecological surgery should raise the suspicion of scar endometriosis after exclusion of other pathologies. In this article, we reviewed three cases of scar endometriosis and ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance imaging features of mass with regard to the current literature perspective. Tumors of fibrous tissue origin (fibromatosis) in chest and mediastinum have been rarely reported in the literature. Herein, we report a rare case of aggressive fibromatosis presenting as an intrathoracic tumor. A 36-year-old woman admitted to our hospital due to a feeling of oppression and pain in the left chest. A chest X-ray, thorax computed tomography revealed a large mass filling two thirds of lower left thorax. Widely surgical resection of the tumor was performed thoracotomy via seventh intercostal space. The tumor was 20x15x15 mm in size and diagnosed pathologically as aggressive fibromatosis. The patient has been well without recurrence for 15 months after surgery. Desmoid tumor is formed by musculoaponeurotic cells which transformes to fibroblastic changes,is a benign tumor although it represents malign characteristics. It usually occurs at abdominal region after traumas; its hard to come by at head neck region.surgical and wide excision is the choosen treatment option.but because of its agressive behaviour, complete treatment can't be done all the time; reccurrence can be seen of a high percentage even after the surgical excision with negative surgical borderlines. In our article,a desmoid tumor which was settled upon the sternocleidomastoid muscle and treated with wide local excision,is being discussed with literature knowledgment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
