Glandula uropygialis (uropygial bez), kuşlarda derinin holokrin yapıda bir yağ bezidir. Bu çalışma erkek peçeli baykuşlarda (Tyto alba) uropygial bezin morfolojik ve histolojik yapısını belirlemek amacıyla yapıldı. Çalışmada erişkin yaşta 4 adet erkek peçeli baykuş materyali kullanıldı. Kuşların kuyruk bölgesinde yer alan bezler diseke edilerek vücuttan ayrıldı. Bezlerin morfometrik incelemeleri yapıldı. Bezin histolo- jik yapısını ortaya koyabilmek amacıyla doku kesitleri Hematoksilen & Eozin (H&E) ve Masson Trichrome yöntemleri ile boyandı. Boyanan kesitler ışık mikroskobu ile incelendi. Topografik incelemede, bezin synsakrumun kaudalinde, kuyruk omurlarının üzerinde yerleştiği belirlendi. Bezin ortalama ağırlığı 0.493±0.02 g, relatif indeks değeri (bez ağırlığının vücut ağırlığına oranı) ise 0.10±0.01 olarak bulundu. Histomorfolojik incelemede her bir lobun dışarıdan bağ doku ile sarıldığı görüldü. Loblar sıralı olarak dizilmiş tubulo-alveolar bezlerden oluşmaktaydı. Bezler ince bağ doku ile sınırlandırılarak birbirinden ayrılmışlardı. Bezler arasındaki bağ doku içerisinde kan damarları yer almaktaydı. Bezler kranialden kaudal uca doğru gidildikçe şekil ve hücre dizilişi bakımından farklılık gösteren 3 farklı bölgeden oluşmaktaydı. Sonuç olarak peçeli baykuş uropygial bezinin gerek morfolojik gerek histolojik yapısı bir takım yapısal farklılıklara rağmen literatürlerde bildirilen diğer birçok kanatlı hayvanlardaki ile benzerdi. The glandula uropygialis (uropygial gland) is a holocrine sebaceous gland of the skin in birds. This study was carried out to determine the morphological and histological structure of the uropygial gland in male barn owls (Tyto alba). In this study, four adult male barn owl materials were used. The glands in the tail area of the birds were dissected and separated from the body. Morphometric examinations were made of the glands. Tissue sections were stained with Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) and Masson Trichrome methods to reveal the histological structure of the gland. The stained sections were examined with by light microscope. In topographical examination, it was determined that the gland was located in the caudal of the synsacrum, above the tail vertebrae. The average weight of the gland was found 0.493 ± 0.02 g, and the relative index value (ratio of gland weight to body weight) was found 0.10 ± 0.01. In histomorphological examination, it was seen that each lobe was externally surrounded by connective tissue. The lobes consisted of sequentially lined tubulo-alveolar glands. The glands were separated by a thin connective tissue. There were blood vessels in the connective tissue between the glands. The glands consisted of 3 different regions that differ in shape and cell sequence to throught from the cranial to the caudal end. As a result, the morphological and histological structure of the barn owl uropygial gland was similar to many other poultry animals reported in the literature, despite some structural differences.

Epidermal büyüme faktörü (EGF), düşük moleküler ağırlıklı bir polipeptitdir. Epidermal büyüme faktörü, reseptöre (EGFR) bağlanarak hücrelerde bölünme ve farklılaşmayı uyarır. Çalışma epidermal büyüme faktör reseptörünün hücre bölünme ve farklılaşmasının fazla olduğu üropigi bezindeki dağılımı ve reseptörün hücre içi yerleşim yerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla planlandı. Üropigi bezinden elde edilen parafin bloklara indirekt Avidin-Biotin Peroksidaz immunohistokimyasal yöntem uygulandı. Çalışmada EGFR’nin, özellikle bezin bazal bölgesinde yer alan tubulusların bazal membran üzerine yerleşen hücrelerinde fazla, lumene doğru yer alan diğer hücrelerde ise, çok az eksprese olduğu, apikal bölgedeki tubulusların duvarını oluşturan tüm hücrelerde ise EGFR ekspresyonunun orta şiddette olduğu belirlendi. Sunulan çalışmada bazal hücrelerde EGFR ekspresyonunun yüksek seviyede gözlenmesi bu hücrelerin sık mitoz aktivite gösterdiği, glikojen bölgesi olarak tanımlanan, apikal bölgedeki tüm hücrelerde EGFR ekspresyonunun orta şiddette olması, EGFR’nin bu hücrelere glukoz transportunda rol oynadığını akla getirmektedir. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a low molecular weight polypeptide. EGF stimulates cell proliferation and differentiation by binding to its reseptors (EGFR).The aim of the present study was to determine the distribution and intracellular localization of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in the uropygial gland in which cell proliferation and differentiation is present. We applied Labelled Avidin Biotin Peroxidase immunohistochemistry method to paraffin sections to show the localization of EGFR. In this study, particulary, the basal cells, which lie on the basement membrane of the tubules in the basal region, showed the strongest expression, the other cells towards the lumen of the tubule showed slightly expression to the EGFR antibody. Medium EGFR expression was observed in all cells of the apical region. According to our results, strong EGFR expression in the basal cells show that these cells are mitogenic. The medium EGFR expression in all of the cells of apical region which is known as glikogen region supposes us that EGFR may have effects on glucose transportation.

Çalışmanın amacı, hücre gelişmesi ve farklılaşmasında önemli rol oynayan insülin benzeri büyüme faktör - I reseptörünün (IGF-IR), horozların üropigi bezindeki dağılımını belirlemek ve reseptörün hücre içindeki yerleşim yerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla planlanmıştır. Üropigi bezinden elde edilen parafin bloklara, indirekt StreptavidinBiotin Peroksidaz immunohistokimyasal yöntemi uygulandı. Çalışmada IGF-I reseptörünün üropigi bezinin bazal ve apikal bölgesindeki hücrelerde eksprese olduğu gözlendi. Özellikle bazal bölgede yer alan tubulusların bazal membran üzerine yerleşen hücrelerinde IGF-I reseptör ekspresyonu çok yoğun olarak belirlendi. IGF-I reseptör, üropigi epitel hücrelerinin sitoplazmasında, granül halinde gözlendi. Sonuçlarımıza göre; üropigi bezinde çoğalma ve farklılaşma özelliğindeki hücrelerde IGF-IR ekspresyonunun çok yüksek olduğu, tamamen farklılaşmış hücrelerde ise bu reseptörün eksprese olmadığı sonucuna varılabilinir. The objective of the present study was to determine the distribution and intracellular localization of insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-IR), that plays a very important role in the differentiation and growth of the cells, in the uropygial gland of cockrell. We applied Labelled Streptavidin Biotin immunohistochemistry to paraffin sections to show the localization of IGF-IR. IGF-I receptor was found in the cells of both basal region and apical region. Particulary, basal cells, which lie on the basement membrane of the tubules in the basal region, showed the strongest immunoreactivity to the IGF-I receptor antibody. In our study, IGF-I receptors showed a granular localization in the cytoplasm of uropygial epithelial cells. Our results show that IGF-I receptors are widely expressed by epithelial cells with proliferative and undifferentiated and that these receptors may be largely down-regulated in highly differentiated epithelial cells.

In the present study, differences occurring in the uropygial glands of roosters fed with a diet containing red hot pepper from 1-day old until 5-months old, were investigated in their histological and morphometrical aspects. It was determined in the experimental group that the lipid content of cells in the sebaceous zone of the uropygial gland was more than that of the controls, and the thicknesses of the tubulus walls and the length of the tubulus increased depending on both age and the effect of red hot pepper. It was observed that in the cells of the glycogen zone: while glycogen and neutral mucins were abundant in the control group, acid mucins were abundant in the experimental group. At the same time, the thicknesses of the tubulus walls and the length of the tubulus increased depending on age in the control group, but in the experimental group the length of the tubulus increased depending on age, while red hot pepper had a reductive effect on the thicknesses of the tubulus walls. In conclusion, in the experimental group, an increase was observed in the activity of the uropygial gland and this increase was in favour of lipid secretion, on the other hand red hot pepper had an enhancing effect on the secretion of acid mucins and a lowering effect on the secretion of glycogen and neutral mucins.
