FAMILY structure , *ACCULTURATION , *YOUNG adults , *SOCIAL structure , *RELIGIOUS behaviors , *IMMIGRANT families , *SEX discrimination - Abstract
This article aims to reveal the changes in the migrant family structure during the post-migration integration process through the Syrian asylum seeker residing in Batman. In particular, it examined whether immigrant families continued their socio-cultural behaviors before migration and whether they felt a sense of belonging to the new society through the change in the process of building a new family. The study was carried out in the form of focus group interviews and in-depth individual interviews, which are used in qualitative research methods. For this, in-depth interviews were conducted with randomly selected families living in Batman. Thus, the dynamic interaction of families with the family structure and the environment before and after the migration was included and the spatial adaptation of the immigrant family members from Syria, the processes of identity and belonging formation, and the spatial-based changes of socio-economic and cultural integration including traditional and religious behavior patterns were examined. Based on the findings, family relations based on new patterns of alienation, cultural conflict, gender discrimination, forced changes among the immigrant families between the old and the new, family structures, the socio-economic and cultural effects of the immigrants in the place they migrated, as well as the cultural meanings and social meanings they brought from their own countries were observed. It has been determined that the impact of women and young people in the reconstruction of the family after migration is indisputable, and in this process, all socio-cultural behavior patterns before and after migration are synthesized based on the interaction between all elements of the social structure. SEX discrimination , *GENDER role , *MARRIAGE , *FAMILY relations , *VIOLENCE against women , *MARRIED women ,SNOWBALL sampling - Abstract
In this study, gender patterns in the life stories of convicted women are examined. The primary purpose of the research is to reveal the position of convicted women regarding gender in their lives. The Snowball sampling method was used in the research. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight women (those whose conviction process ended and whose conviction process is still ongoing) using a semi-structured interview form. The interviews lasted between 150-210 minutes. In the interviews, women's living spaces were handled as eight separate themes, and interviews were conducted through questions focusing on the content of the themes. Eight themes were determined within the framework of the results obtained. These themes are named as women's personality and psychological characteristics, childhood and family life, education life, working life, social life, marriage life, gender and the effects of gender on different areas of life, women's crime, and sentencing process. The qualitative data obtained were analyzed with the Maxqda 2020 program using the content analysis method and coded. It is seen that the gender roles and gender-specific lifestyles, gender discrimination, and inequalities adopted by the patriarchal society are very effective in the life processes (childhood, education, family relations, social area, marital life, decision to marry, communication with partner, gender roles within marriage, exposure to violence and/or oppression, reasons for committing crimes, etc.) of women. WOMEN'S sports , *MASCULINITY , *SEX discrimination , *WOMEN athletes , *VOLLEYBALL players , *OBJECTIVITY in journalism , *NEWS websites - Abstract
Studies on many aspects of how female athletes are covered in the media exist. The overwhelming majority of these research have found that gendered depictions of female athletes in the media are less common than those of male athletes. Numerous studies have shown that the media's portrayal of men's sports reflects hegemonic masculinity, while women's sports are underrepresented and trivialized in this setting. The purpose of this study is to identify the gender bias in news stories concerning female athletes and to estimate how frequently these stories appear in print media. The following are the hypotheses developed in this context: 1) There are fewer sports news stories about women than about males. 2) Sports news articles featuring women place a strong focus on gender in their written contents. 3) The visual texts of sports news stories involving women place a strong focus on gender. In this study, the analysis of sports news in social media accounts and sports news including female athletes was carried out in December 2020, taking into consideration variations in the frequency and manner of adding sports news involving women. Due to the enormous volume of news on our female volleyball players' social media accounts around this time and the fact that several of them had success, the study was conducted in December. On news websites and Twitter accounts, descriptive data of other sports news and news about female athletes were calculated for the study. The news stories on female athletes will be subjected to written and visual content analysis. By counting or describing the elements in the text, content analysis is a procedure that reveals what the news' writers, presenters, and producers intend to say. This method will be used to demonstrate the prevalence of the masculine gaze in popular culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SEX discrimination , *CAREER development , *INTEGRITY , *WOMEN executives , *WOMEN employees , *MOBS , *PUBLIC administration , *PRIVATE sector - Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to examine the gender discrimination problems faced by women at management levels in the US, Europe, Asia and Turkey in the 21st century. In the first part, the literature findings on the current situation of gender discrimination in countries were summarized. In the second part, data related to the problems faced by women managers in the public administration and private sector in Turkey and relevant solution suggestions were given. Although most of the gender discrimination studies focus on a single aspect of gender discrimination, various fundamental issues such as mobbing, physical harassment, career development constraints and wage differences in different countries were mentioned in the study. The topic has been discussed in terms of both female employees and managers. On the other hand, answers were sought to the questions of how gender discrimination is viewed in different countries in 21st century, what the findings of the studies related to these might be, and why it is important to consider these issues in a universal integrity. Because in different countries and cultures, the fact that the problems faced by women employees and managers are similar and what their solution-oriented counterparts are in the societies were also among the topics of analysis. SEX discrimination , *GENDER differences (Sociology) , *GENDER role , *GENDER stereotypes , *SOCIAL marginality , *GOSSIP , *TEACHER training - Abstract
This research focuses on gender, meaning that the roles and actions of "feminine" and "masculine" genders are distinguished by societal expectations and turned into "female" or "male" individuals. This qualitative study intends to elucidate the opinions of high school students on gender differences in teacher behavior. The research study group comprises of 80 participants drawn from the students attending public high schools in the central regions of Eskişehir during the academic years 2022--2023. The researcher devised a semi-structured interview form to collect data for the study. The data were analyzed using the method of content analysis. According to the research findings, most gender role preconceptions are restrictive/repressive, and these stereotypes constitute the foundation of gender discrimination in society. In addition, individuals adopt the gender roles that society deems proper for them out of fear of social exclusion, rejection, and condemnation. All participants agree that teachers display gender-stereotyped behaviour. Moreover, instructor behaviors including these patterns vary according to the gender of the students. Teachers encourage female students to conduct and speak in a particular manner, to sit in a particular manner, to be interested in sports such as volleyball that are deemed appropriate for women, not to use abusive language, not to act like males, and not to cut their hair as short as men. On the other hand, male students engage in actions and speak in a particular manner regarding not chewing gum, gossiping, not wearing jewelry, not wearing pink, and wearing tight clothing. In addition, according to participant feedback, it is possible to eliminate gender role stereotypes through practices such as raising environmental awareness through individual effort, educating the public, arranging education programs to promote gender awareness, training teachers, and imposing sanctions. It is feasible to suggest that instructors' gender behavior can have either positive or harmful consequences on their students, and that these gender roles can be replicated or stopped in schools by teachers. For this reason, it is important for teachers to receive pre-service and in-service training so that they can gain gender awareness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL services , *SOCIAL institutions , *EQUAL rights , *STATISTICAL correlation , *CIVIL rights , *GENDER inequality , *SEX discrimination - Abstract
Gender equality means that women and men have equal rights in many fields, and that all individuals benefit from all social services equally without any discrimination. Inequality in this area is called gender inequality. Various measurement tools have been developed to measure gender inequality. The Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) is one of these measurement methods. In the study, discrimination in the family and restricted civil liberties, which are two sub-dimensions of SIGI, are discussed and the relationship between them is investigated within MENA countries. In the investigation of this relationship, nonlinear canonical correlation analysis, which is one of the multivariate statistical methods and used in the analysis of categorical variables, is preferred. As a result of the analysis, the existence of the relationship between the variables belonging to the sub-dimensions is confirmed by χ2 independence test, and the strength of the relationship is determined by calculating the contingency coefficient obtained as a result of this test. According to the findings, a very high correlation is determined between the two sub-dimensions and most of the variables of these sub-dimensions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FORCED marriage , *SOCIAL problems , *DEVELOPMENTAL psychology , *BRIDES , *SEX discrimination , *DOMESTIC violence - Abstract
Child brides are expressed with the concepts of early marriages and forced marriages. Child bride marriages are marriages formed by girls before they complete their physical and psychological development. The phenomenon of marriage is a conceptualization of adulthood. However, the fact that the adult marriage phenomenon is experienced by children has allowed the definition of child to be considered. In particular, the modernization process has enabled the definition of child to be made more clearly, improving the education conditions of girls, extending the education period and inclusion of girls in economic life. Most importantly, the relationship between mother-child mortality risk and child bride marriages has been clearly demonstrated. The developments have enabled the child bride phenomenon to be defined as a social problem. In this study, it was tried to determine the socio-cultural reasons of the child bride phenomenon. Literature searches were made. Since the study is considered as a special and detailed subject, it was prepared as a qualitative research. In-depth interview technique was used in the study. The sample is limited to 25 people who are child brides in Elazig region. The data were analyzed in the MAXQDA/2020 qualitative research program. The reasons for early marriages were analyzed into categories and subcategories. In the research, it was concluded that many factors such as lack of education, poverty, rural life, domestic violence, abuse events, gender discrimination, belief, destiny, honor, traditional and cultural structure are effective in child bride marriages. With the belief that it will contribute to the literature, the importance of the subject has been emphasized and suggestions have been presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INCOME distribution , *INCOME inequality , *GOVERNMENT policy , *INHERITANCE & transfer tax , *LORENZ curve , *SEX discrimination - Abstract
Nowadays, there are environmental problems like climate, flood, fire and human issues as terrorism, gender discrimination, income inequality that people face. Being one of the human problems, income inequality issue is keeping its significance by years. Since people's income cannot be ensured in its distribution fairly when it is left to the market mechanism, income inequality is intervened by the government by applying different policies. In this direction, in the research analyzing the effect of government tax and transfer policies on income redistribution in Turkey was aimed. In the study the redistributive tax and transfer policies applied by the government were examined between 2010 and 2017. The microdata obtained from the Household Budget Surveys published by TUIK were analyzed with Lorenz and concentration curves. As a result of the study, it was seen that there was no significant change in the redistribution of income in the years examined in order to reduce inequality. In addition, it is observed that taxes do not regularly concentrate on a certain income group. Finally, it was found that the transfer policies applied by the state were mainly aimed at the high-income group. It is thought that the application of the taxes applied by the state to the high-income, the regulation of the tax system to the advantage of the lowincome, and the provision of the transfer policies to the poor will reduce the justice in income distribution. SEX discrimination , *SOCIAL boundaries , *LANDSCAPE architecture , *OPEN spaces , *ADOPTION of ideas , *PUBLIC spaces - Abstract
Gender roles constitute the basis of the adoption of the idea that “Women's place is at home”. The roles that society imposes on men and women create social differences and boundaries between the sexes. While marginalizing women, it keeps men at a higher level and causes inequalities between men and women in social life. The city, which is one of the places where inequality and oppression is most evident, sees men as hosts, but welcomes women. From past to present, it will be discussed how the evolution of gender roles in Turkish history is reflected on urban open spaces today. Landscape architects are also responsible for urban open space design with equal accessibility for every segment of society. Landscape architecture branch is responsible for designing that space in a way that every user can use, instead of imposing a gender discrimination on urban open spaces. Every individual is the sole user of public spaces where they can feel safe and free. In this study, the pressures and inequalities created by gender roles that underlie the woman's inability to see herself as a user of the city have been defined. It is aimed to reveal the relationship between the social infrastructure of this situation and the landscape architecture branch, which is one of the environmental design professionals. SEX discrimination , *FAMILY-work relationship , *DISCRIMINATION (Sociology) , *SERVICE industries , *CONFLICT management , *SOCIAL norms - Abstract
Working individuals and families have various responsibilities for work and family areas. Over time, the requirements of both areas may cause conflict in the individual. At the end of this process, individuals face work-family conflict. While some individuals can manage the work-family conflict positively, some individuals may encounter negative consequences. Burnout and turnover intention are frequently seen among these results. In this process, the family and society can also have a positive or negative effect. Based on that, the aim of the research is to investigate the mediating role of burnout in the effect of work-family conflict on turnover intention and to reveal whether gender discrimination as a social norm has a moderating role. The study was conducted on the data collected by survey method from 418 participants operating in the service sector in Adana and Niğde region. The data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS package programs. The results showed that burnout had a statistically partial mediating role in the effect of work-family conflict on turnover intention, and social norms did not have a statistical moderator role in these relationships (no effect on the direction and strength of relationships). The study is of distinctive importance thanks to its holistic examination of work-family conflict, burnout, turnover intention, and social norms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research aims to determine the mediating role of corporate reputation in the relationship between communication satisfaction and emotional commitment of ground services workers and to determine whether communication satisfaction differs statistically according to demographic variables. In accordance with this purpose; the data were obtained from 213 active employees in their companies operating in Turkey, TGS Yer Hizmetleri A.Ş., Çelebi Hava Servis A.Ş. and Havaalanları Yer Hizmetleri A.Ş. by online survey method. The data were tested with reliability, correlation, simple linear regression, multiple regression analysis, independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance. As a result of the reliability analysis, it was determined that the scales used in the research had high internal consistency. As a result of regression analysis, it has been determined that there is a significant relationship between communication satisfaction and emotional commitment, between communication satisfaction and corporate reputation, between corporate reputation and emotional commitment, and that corporate reputation has a full mediating effect on the relationship between communication satisfaction and emotional commitment. It was found that a 1-unit increase in communication satisfaction led to an increase of 0.322 units on emotional commitment, a 1-unit increase in communication satisfaction on corporate reputation increased by 0.699 units, a 1-unit increase in corporate reputation led to an increase of 0.434 units on emotional commitment. As a result of the difference analyzes carried out, it has been determined that communication satisfaction shows a significant difference according to gender and marital status, while there is no statistically significant difference according to the age, education level, working time, work department and titles of the employees. FISHER discriminant analysis , *DIAGNOSTIC sex determination , *RECEIVER operating characteristic curves , *OTTOMAN Empire , *ANTHROPOMETRY , *SEX discrimination - Abstract
Sex estimation from skeletons is an important analysis to construct a biological profile of an unidentified skeletal remains. Triangle area is calculated with linear measurements taken from the skull, and models are being developed for sex estimation. The aim of this study was to derive discriminant function equations from two triangles in the skull. The material of the study consists of the skulls of 112 individuals (56 males and 56 females) which are dated to the Late Ottoman Period and collected from the Istanbul Karacaahmet Cemetery. Six linear measurements were taken from the skulls of this series of known sex, and the facial and occipital triangle areas were determined by the Heron formula. TEM, rTEM, R coefficients and ICC were calculated to determine the intra-observer and inter-observer error. The sex discrimination power of each criterion was evaluated by ROC curve analysis. T-test was used to determine the differences between the sexes, and discriminant function analysis was used to create formulas. In the study, it was determined that the intra-observer and inter-observer error rates of 6 measurements were low (TEM = 0.16-0.94 mm; rTEM = 0.74- 2.08%; R = 0.91-0.99; ICC = 0.951-0.992). All variables differed significantly between sex (p<0.05). According to the ROC analysis, the sex discrimination power of the triangle areas was similar (AUC; occipital triangle area 0.727, facial triangle area 0.736). As a result of the present study, it was determined that the 4 equations established correctly classified sex at rates ranging from 67% to 73.2%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OCCUPATIONAL roles , *SOCIAL classes , *SOCIALIZATION , *SOCIAL perception , *SEX discrimination , *GENDER inequality - Abstract
This study aims to reveal the social perception created by gender roles in the media and to compare the results with traditional attitudes towards gender roles, including the cultural issues in Turkey. Within the scope of the research, focus group interviews were conducted with 32 people selected from different socioeconomic levels in 4 different groups. According to the research findings, it was concluded that the media (especially in TV series, movies and advertisements) plays a negative role in ensuring gender equality. Gender roles represented in the media are based on individual characteristics, traditional and social values formed in society. Participants, regardless of their education and social classes, stated that the division of business and professional roles in media broadcasts are determined by gender. They also claimed that although the media has negative effects in the current situation, it can significantly contribute to raise awareness about gender roles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GENDER wage gap , *SEX discrimination , *INCOME inequality , *WOMEN employees , *WOMEN'S rights , *WOMEN'S education - Abstract
From past to present, women have faced many problems in social and economic life based on gender discrimination. Especially the discrimination they face in professional life (orientation towards the profession, recruitment process, promotion, wage gap etc.) pushes the women out of the labor market. Improving the rights of women in working life and preventing discrimination play a significant role in the sustainable development of the countries. Therefore, this study aims to examine the determinants of wage gap based on gender. In accordance with this aim, Household labor data of Turkish Statistical Institute was used. First of all, Heckman sample selection method was applied. Then, determinants of the wage gap were tried to be determined with Blinder-Qaxaca decomposition. According to the findings, it was determined that the regions, age, marital status, education, vocational education, to be public or private sector worker, to work informal and working type (part-time) have effect on gender wage gap. Furthermore, manufacturing, trade and service sectors were found to have important effects. According to the findings of the study, special policies that regulate the wage level can be developed for regions where wage gap is high. In addition, education of women should be encouraged, especially at university level, since educational level plays an important role in determining the wage. In all the examined sectors, it was found that women can earn more than men when they are treated equally. In this regard, the biggest difference will be made in service, manufacturing and trade industries, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SEX discrimination , *CIVIL society , *GENDER , *INTERSECTIONALITY , *BUDGET process , *GENDER inequality - Abstract
In the public resource allocation and redistribution process, to reduce inequalities, it is of the utmost importance considering those exposed to intersectional discrimination based on gender, sexual identity, religion, race, ethnic origin, disability and the like. Gender Budgeting (GB), developed to allocate public resources according to the needs and priorities of different genders, also aims to eliminate these intersectional inequalities. In this study, the project and activity-based GB in Tekirdağ and Urla municipalities, which are among the limited examples of GB initiatives in Turkey, are discussed. Although both initiatives need improvement, they are among the prominent examples in Turkey regarding the adoption of GB activities without the leadership and support of any national or international organisation and involving gender-related data in the budgeting process. The widespread adoption of these practices by local political actors and civil society will contribute to more sustainable gender equality policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

YOUNG adults , *GREATER wax moth , *SEX discrimination , *HUMIDITY , *HONEY , *LAVENDERS - Abstract
The effects of various honey produced in Turkey on the longevity of the adult lepidopteran parasitoid, Bracon hebetor was investigated. Experiments were carried out in laboratory conditions, 25±1°C and relative humidity of 60±5%. There was no photoperiodic regimen used during the experiments. Larvae of Galleria mellonella were used as a host to rear the parasitoid adults. After the newly emerged adult parasitoid males and females were separated according to sexes, they were fed individually with only water, flower-honey, sunflower-honey, chesnut-honey, lavender-honey, and oak-honey. Observations continued daily until all parasitoids died and sex discrimination was made on the dead parasitoids. All experiments were repeated three times with different adult parasitoids and at different times. The longevity of male parasitoids obtained from sunflower-honey fed adults was the highest, while the highest longevity of female parasitoids was obtained from lavender-honey fed adults. Female parasitoids lived longer than male parasitoids in all experimental groups. Feeding with different honey types significantly increased the longevity of both male and female parasitoids compared to those that were fed only water. Differences between the longevity of parasitoids in all experimental groups can probably be explained by the different composition of the nutritional components of each honey and how this corresponds to the metabolic requirements of the parasitoid. The concept of gender refers to cultural and socially determined gender roles. Over the centuries, the place and status of women in societies have been constantly discussed. The role of men and women in almost every society in this process has been an ongoing debate today. With the traditional perspective, gender discrimination has directed women to move away from success, power and independence, making women an object that arouses sexual feelings. When we look at the field of art, women have always been at the forefront. In particular, this woman's perception has shown herself in music and lyrics. When we examine the works of Turkish Folk Music which is our traditional culture, we clearly see the perspective of women in society from past to present. The folk songs reveal love, violence, longing, and even sexual identity against women. In this study, in the sample of Afyonkarahisar province, it is aimed to examine the perception of women in Turkish folk music works. The content analysis technique will be used in the research. During the research process; For the determined subject, the sample will be selected and the collected data will be described, evaluated and interpreted. While collecting the data, archive scanning will be provided to obtain data. It is thought that the research is original and will be a source for related publications and researches. WOMEN'S roles , *TURKIC peoples , *TURKIC folk literature , *WOMEN'S history , *SOCIAL status , *LEGENDS , *SEX discrimination ,TURKISH history ,TURKISH folklore - Abstract
Today, women are still struggling to feel their existence and prove themselves. According to the research conducted in our country and the World, it has been estimated that women are surpassed by men with regard to their status. Nevertheless, when Turkish history, literature and culture are analyzed, the place of women in social life in Old Turks was far above women today. Women, who were spouses, companions of their husbands, and mothers of their children, were seen as prestigious, as the source of life in reference to fertility. In this study, the concept of women in the legends of Yakut (Saha), Tuva, Hakas, Şor and Altay Turks, who used to live in the Siberian Realm, which ran from Ural Mountains to the Pacific Ocean in the modern Russian Federation, was located in the Asian content, where Turkish people emerged and knew their homeland, will be analyzed with the help of examples from the legend contexts. In the epic texts examined, it is seen that the status of women in the Old Turks is equal to, or even higher than that of men. There is no gender discrimination in the Turks, and women are not exposed to negative discrimination. The fact that Turkish women stood by men in all spheres of life, in terms of their position and status leads us to the conclusion that Old Turkish societies had a highly developed cultural structure when compared to other world peoples who were their contemporaries.
