ANCIENT cities & towns , *SOCIAL history , *ORAL history , *CULTURAL property , *ANCIENT history , *COLLECTIVE memory - Abstract
The ancient city of Prusias Ad Hypium (Konuralp), located in the Bithynia region in ancient times, is located 8 km north of the city centre of Düzce today. Konuralp is a settlement where we observe the historical process with its ancient theatre, atlı kapı, aqueducts, Roman bridge, city walls and the ruins of the Ottoman period. In this study, with the data obtained from the project titled "Cultural Heritage of Düzce from Prusias Ad Hypium to Konuralp" carried out between 2017-2018, the reflections of the ancient city's past to the present, the role of the places belonging to the ancient history in the formation of social memory and collective memory, and their contribution to the formation of the cultural identity of the city in the construction process were examined. The method used in this article is oral history, which is frequently used in the field of History today, but not in the field of Antiquity. In the interviews with mostly local people over the age of 50, their memories, memories experienced in spatial areas, rituals, rumours, in short, what remains in their memories were recorded between the lines. With this study, it is aimed to record the narratives before they are lost and to take steps towards the protection of cultural heritage by creating historical awareness in the people of the region. At the same time, common memory places were also identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Societies need to have roots in order to reveal their existence, to live and to lead a life with their own way. In other saying, every society needs to attach itself to a history, geography and ancestor. As a result of this attachment beliefs, myths and especially language that hold society together emerge. Bards are one of the culture keepers who process and put in the place these cornerstones. Since the main materials they use are the language, beliefs and mythologies of the society, bards should be accepted as community builders. Societies, which are living organisms, can change geography from time to time as a result of economic, political, military, natural disasters and try to survive again. In the rewritten history and in the changing geography, the bards are again in action in order to keep the society alive and to continue its existence. Bards have a great share in the fact that nations like Turks, whose historical and geographical depths span a very large time and area, still stand firm despite many wars and natural disasters with high destructive power. Bards not only transfer the past of societies to the future, but also develop the memory of social history and nation by placing the present in history. Âşık Veysel is one of the bards who have recently improved the memory of the society and made a mark on history. Veysel fulfilled his duty to develop the historical repository, which is one of his duties towards the society, by dealing with some of the political events, revolutions, institutions and the natural disasters, diseases, epidemics in his poems. In this study, it is aimed to examine the events that Âşık Veysel witnessed and his point of view towards these events in his poems. Assuming that his poems are also oral history texts, it is aimed to make an evaluation about recent history from the perspective of Âşık Veysel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MENTAL health , *HABITAT destruction , *SADNESS , *EMOTIONAL experience , *ENVIRONMENTAL psychology , *ORAL history , *PLACE attachment (Psychology) - Abstract
Humans have emotional responses to surrounding environmental changes and socio-ecological destruction in their lifeworld. Their deep sense of loss is exacerbated by these changes. Destructive environmental changes bring out catastrophic losses to culture, knowledge of life, livelihoods, generational knowledge, and mental and emotional well-being. For local inhabitants, the place and region constitute emotional geographies, intimate attachments, and a community-based sense of place. This paper is a case study on the emotional geographies of late capitalism, ecopsychology, and sociology of emotions in the context of geographies of ecological sorrows and farewell. This paper focuses on the environmental desolation of two tiny villages of Artvin province, in rural northeastern Anatolia, Zeytinlik (Sirya) and Oruçlu (Orcuk) that were drowned by the waters of the Deriner Dam in the Çoruh Valley. The research findings indicate that the destruction of nature and lifeworld has evoked tremendous expressions of sorrow and loss from the dislocated people living along the river. The research aims to open a debate on the negative effects of environmental change lived in the country that is not discussed in the mainstream discourse, through the individual and collective emotions experienced in the processes of witnessing the radical change of rural living spaces. The research uses an ethnographic method that allows us to extract people's discourses about their emotional experiences of certain places from books, documentaries, oral history, and literary materials that express their emotional affinity to the very same places. The findings of the research reveal that the destruction of nature and habitats causes intense expressions of sadness and loss for people living by the river. The study demonstrates that the losses of beloved lands produced by capitalist expansion also produce place-based emotional narratives of ecological loss, solastalgia, and grief. The research deals with the conservation of modern architectural heritage with a focus on the interior. The user coming into direct contact with the interior makes it prone to subsequent interventions, although this also makes the protection of the interior space problematic. The research aims to address this problem through the consideration of a cinema structure in Ankara, namely Kavaklıdere Cinema. This Nejat Tekelioğlu apartment cinema building was built in 1965 and constitutes the sample of the research. In the first part of the research, the subject of the protection of modern architectural heritage is conveyed using a value-centered conservation approach. Different institutions and individuals have included definitions of value. In the following part, the emergence of cinema and its spatialization process are explained. In the final part, the interior analysis was conveyed through plans and interior photographs of the Kavaklıdere Cinema, which was chosen as a sample. An oral history interview was held with Ayhan Nergiz, the owner of the cinema, as well as with Zafer Şener and İrfan Demirkol, who have been the managers of the cinema for many years. Voluntary consent forms were obtained during the interviews. The personal archives of the interviewees were used as visual materials. Finally, Kavaklıdere Cinema was evaluated, according to the framework of the value-centered conservation approach, in terms of the value of the documents, identity, architecture, function and economic, continuity, memory, and originality. As a result of the evaluations, the features that Kavaklıdere Cinema should have in order to be considered as a modern architectural heritage have been analyzed, and the necessity of protecting the building has been emphasized. In addition to providing research, documentation and valuation, this study also serves as a basis for the work that needs to be done to protect Kavaklıdere Cinema. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the oral history and collective memory of locals in terms of the transformation of daily practices, social relations, and the space of Ankara from the late 1940s to the present. The research mainly focuses on the changes that have occurred in the main memory spaces of Ankara, and how these changes are perceived and evaluated by residents of the Çankaya district aged over 60. In this study, which aims to analyze how spaces, and therefore collective memory, have been transformed in Ankara and how this transformation is reflected in daily life, it is seen that the city planning that has attempted to use squares, parks, and architecture to reflect the Republic has actually moved away from those ideals over the years. This is especially true with the strengthening of modernization and capitalist production relations since the beginning of the serious urban and social transformation of the 1970s. The initial manifestations of this transformation were in the set up of locations. The background economic and political factors in this transformation have had major effects on the shaping of spaces, as well as on social and cultural structures, and this process of change has been reflected in daily life. The changes have been so dramatic that it can be said that Ankara's memory spaces have been completely transformed in historical process, and are now faced with extinction. The regions of Kızılay and Ulus, which we can define as being the center of the city, have gradually begun to lose their distinctive character.

The hat has great symbolic importance in Turkey and the most significant manifestation of this importance is the hat law. The introduction of the law lead to widespread hat production in the country and the intensification of spatial formations. In this study, the historical process of hat making in Ankara is examined in terms of its socio-spatial content. With the proclamation of the Republic, the fedora was used by urban residents, and the cap by rural residents, as symbols of modernization. This representation has visual, textual, and verbal sources which are used in this work to consider the symbolic and semantic value of the hat. The aim is to evaluate the hat as an object, as well as the spaces where it was produced with their subjects and their own time periods. The period covered in the research was during a marked change in clothing habits, as determined by Ankara hat makers, with the proclamation of the Republic. There were two stages to the research: to consider the symbolic and semantic meaning of the hat through visual and textual materials; and to examine the socio-spatial development processes of the Bozdağ Kasket and Ankara Şapka, selected as samples, with their context and subjects. This review also includes oral history interviews in terms of scanning archive documents and producing new documents. This work is considered important in the context of producing visual and technical material, and then sharing such material by creating oral testimony. The research was carried out qualitatively and utilized the method of oral history. Oral, written and visual documents included in the mixed methodology were evaluated, and then a spatial analysis of the case study was implemented. Data was collected on a voluntary basis after consent forms were obtained.

POPULAR music , *FOLK music , *ORAL history , *TWENTIETH century , *INTELLECTUAL life , *BASS guitar , *DOUBLE bass - Abstract
Sivas, which constitutes one of the strongest veins of thousands of years of musical heritage in Anatolia, has been one of the cities that enrich our music culture not only with folk music but also with popular music works. In this study, beyond traditional folk music works, the first popular music works that started in Sivas especially after the second half of the twentieth century are discussed. In this sense, it was tried to examine what kind of works were carried out in Sivas in the name of popular music, especially in the 1960 and later period, with the oral history method, and it was aimed to bring to light a musical memory that is almost hidden today. Interviews with the living representatives of the period and document analysis revealed that there was a very active popular music scene in Sivas between 1960 and 1985, and that modern Western instruments such as double bass, saxophone, drums, bass guitar and accordion shaped the musical and cultural life in Sivas. These popular music formations, which were characterized as "jazzband" at the time and shaped by individual efforts, added richness to the existing music culture of the city, but it is understood that they have not been in demand since the mid-1980s. FOLK literature , *SOCIAL change , *SOCIAL history , *LITERARY form , *ELECTRONIC newspapers , *FRIENDSHIP , *ONLINE social networks , *AUDIENCES , *COLLECTIVE memory - Abstract
Described as having a friendly chat, conversing and verbally mild humor, “yârenlik” colloquially denotes humorous talk and narration of memories with a witty punch line at the end. Amusing is a central quality in narration of yârenlik that serves as an origin of anecdotes. The form of yârenlik that not only amuses but also helps recount and exemplify a subject matter or a notion is called "teselleme". As it is the case in other folkloric forms of literature, the narration of yârenlik also serves to directly or indirectly entertain, relax, foster friendship and solidarity, criticize, and educate. Since they are set and narrated in small villages, narrators and audience are acquainted directly or only by name with the true protagonists of yârenlik as it is the case for the forms of teselleme. While the ridiculousness of the “yârenlik” depends on the elements that can be explained within the theories of superiority, incongruity and relaxation, on the other hand, the real and original personality of the narrative hero is an important element of laughter. The narration to the audience who are not acquainted with protagonists is a token of how the story or the state of things is more important than the subject, appealing to a larger group of people. Such forms of yârenlik and teselleme are more convenient to be morphed into an anecdote. In addition, amusing, which is typically the purpose of yârenlik, serves rather as a means for teselleme and anecdotes. What is narrated turns into a proverb when its message or the lesson learned from it does not sink into oblivion even though true protagonists, the story itself or the state of things are no longer relevant and thus forgotten about. Therefore, one can argue that the recounts of yârenlik provide an origin for proverbs and idioms. When recounted to people who are not from where it originates, yârenlik brings about additional comments and statements by the narrator if it is released in a rural newspaper or posted online on social networks. In this case, the narrator feels the need to include informative statements about the subject, especially in the introduction. Incorporating such humorous talk and memories that are spontaneously formed in daily life, the recounts of yârenlik directly portray the lifestyles of the village or site where they are set, their living conditions, common perceptions and views, namely their culture and socioeconomic state as they are based on true characters, events, and situations. The wording, the forms of addressing, and patterns of expressions are likely to offer insight into the local dialect and serve as a basis for further studies. Some “yârenlik”s disappear depending on changing social conditions and time. From this point of view, it is of capital importance to compile and review such recounts that may serve as an origin for cultural and historical studies as well as folk literature. Dalakçı village of Mucur district of Kırşehir draws attention with the prevalence of the expression of “yârenlik”. 155 of the “yârenlik”s that the villagers sent to the "Dalakçı Newspaper" were made into a book and published under the name "Yârenlikleriyle Köyümüz Dalakçı-1". In our study, the “yârenlik”s in this book have been examined in terms of their humorous features and determinations have been made about the qualities that make them different from “teselleme” and anecdote. Many factors form the collective memory of societies and play a role in cultural change. In this study, the process of Turkey's acquaintance with television, in particular the relationship between cultural change and technology, is discussed with the oral history method. In the study, the answers to the questions “How did society say hello to television and how did television affect the daily life of society?” were questioned from the point of view of folklore, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 informants who witnessed this process, in other words, who experienced cultural shock, between 2012 and 2019. Television in terms of communication technology; is at a leading, critical point in cultural change. Television has been characterized as “the video radio, home theater, invention of the devil, invention of the infidel, Christ, antichrist, opium of the people, wasteland, time thief, fool's box, magic box, painkiller, white noise, companion of loneliness, ordinary, low, electronic giant, farsighted technology, window to the world, myth, contemporary storyteller, culture production machine, cultural garbage” in social memory, from positive and negative viewpoints. The process of acquaintance with television in Anatolia took place approximately between 1970-1985; verbal expressions of television such as fairy tales, stories, legends, and folk songs; taking an active role in children's games, entertainment and replacing ordinary daily conversations. It is seen that people adjust their daily or weekly plans and time according to television. In particular, the elderly showed resistance to meeting with TV, and this caused tragicomic memories in terms of folk humor; the fact that TV also affects neighborliness and hospitality, and travels are made even outside the province to watch television; that the financial difficulty of buying television creates a memory in the public economy; it has been determined that expatriates and people with good economic status take an active role in meeting with television and this situation gives them prestige and status. It is seen that traditional folk theater such as Karagöz-Hacivat was used in the first period domestic broadcasts, and besides, television negatively affected traditional conversation meetings and coffeehouses, which are the performance environment of minstrels, in the context of cultural change. In addition, television causes para-social interaction; people tend to identify themselves or those around them with people on television, especially in matters related to their appearances, such as clothing, speech, and hairstyle, and thus television directs fashion. It has been determined that people give names or nicknames to their children, spouses, friends or animals based on the characters on the television, and this affects children's games. It has been determined that television also affects handicrafts, and people give names to hand-knitted models based on the people they are influenced by television. It is seen that an important event such as the coup in 1980, which profoundly affected society in terms of politics, took place in memory as an oral history record concerning television. In this period, in the marriage rite of passage, while the television turned into a dowry object for the man, the girl was expected to knit a television cover for her dowry. In addition, when the bride is taken to the groom's house, she does not get out of the vehicle and asks her mother-in-law or father-in-law for an asset with material value, called "drop off" or "donation for the road". It is seen that television is donated to the bride for a discount besides properties such as fields, vineyards, and houses. The arrival of electricity in Anatolia for the people who use the car battery as a solution to watch television and get electricity after TV. "Television came, electricity came." is expressed. In this process, it is seen that coffee houses have an important spatial function. Words such as television tea, television tingling, television evil eye, antenna forest, and telesapphire show the emergence of television jargon. In addition, it has been determined that television is included in verbal expressions such as riddles, manis, and folk songs. It is concluded that television is functional in social and cultural change in terms of carrying the local to the national and contributing to nationalization, as well as accelerating globalization. It is thought that this study will contribute to research that will analyze cultural changes in folklore and technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ORAL history , *SOCIAL sciences education , *SOCIAL history , *QUALITATIVE research , *TEACHING methods - Abstract
Oral history is one of the teaching methods that enable students to integrate with social life in the Social Studies lessons. The effective use of the oral history method in the Social Studies lessons contributes to the students' acquisition of various skills and values, to know the society they belong to, to be interested in history, and to the meaning of the Social Studies lessons. The main purpose of the research is to examine the articles about oral history in social studies in Türkiye in terms of various criteria. Document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. In this context, 24 articles on oral history in Social Studies, which were made between 2013 and 2022, were examined in the research. The reviewed articles were accessed from TR Index, ERIC, EBSCOhost and Google Scholar databases. Descriptive analysis was used in the analysis of the data. In the research, it was revealed that the most articles were published in 2017 within the scope of oral history in Social Studies in Türkiye. However, since 2018, there has been a decrease in the number of articles on oral history in Social Studies over the years. The articles are mostly aimed at determining the perceptions, views and attitudes of the participants. In the articles in which oral history studies were applied, the subject of "life in the past" was determined the most. In addition, it was revealed that in about half of the articles in which oral history studies were applied, there were no criteria for determining the source person and most of the oral history studies were not evaluated. Based on the results of the research, it is recommended to diversify the subjects studied in oral history studies in Social Studies, to use different activities and to evaluate these studies. Peter Benedict (1938–2006) is an underrecognized figure in the history of anthropology in Turkey even though his Ula research, published in 1974, has been one of the most meticulous studies on the Anatolian countryside. This article unveils a biographical portrait of Benedict by utilizing the archival resources that consist of personal correspondences from the 1960s and 70s as well as oral history interviews conducted by the author. In addition, by analyzing his publications, it demonstrates Benedict’s authentic contributions to the literature and emphasizes the originality of his approach to the post-World War II transformations through the point of view of the townsmen. Designed in life history format, thanks to the help of details about his personal life, this article aims to present Benedict as a human being with his successes and anxieties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Turkish minstrel tradition, with its historical identity, has been seen as a unique cultural richness that has continued within a certain tradition for centuries. In the 20th century, hundreds of masters of speech, under the name of the tradition of ashik, performed their arts in musical assemblies. Some of these artists attracted the attention of the society with their unique identities or worldviews, and their real names were forgotten under their pseudonyms. One of these names is Ozan Arif. Ozan Arif's name was commemorated with Turkish nationalism and the idealist movement, and he was given the titles of "the voice of national feelings" and "Dede Korkut of his Age" by his fans. Ozan Arif succeeded in fulfilling his mission with his art, his performance on the stage and his mastery in reading poetry set him apart from his other contemporaries. Especially his poems that criticized September 12th military coup have eternalized the state of the people who suffered in the memory of the society, and they have waited for the day when they would be discovered as oral history documents. It is possible to see that Ozan Arif's epics are oral history documents when compared to the memories of tortured people of that time and with his own narratives. These memories were eternalized in people's memories as verses and rhymes. Thus, the power of poetry was accepted by the readers/listeners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CITY dwellers , *HAT design & hat making , *ORAL history , *HABIT , *PROCLAMATIONS , *ARCHIVES , *RURAL geography , *HATS - Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COLLECTIVE memory , *URBAN planning , *ORAL history , *SOCIAL structure , *EVERYDAY life , *PUBLIC spaces - Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impact of the French-mandate period on Hatay has been less studied although it has been studied extensively particularly on Syria. This research examines social, cultural and economic life and education in the Sanjak of Alexandretta under the French mandate by using historical-anthropological methods. It focuses on the ways in which the mandate period is remembered in terms of collective social memory through interviews with people who remember that period or with people who acquired information from their family members. This research argues that the French sustained the fractured structure of the region by providing local groups the right of education in their mother tongue, allowing them to practice their cultures and not intervening in the already existing economic relations. However, the French mandate regime worked to spread French culture and language in the region of Antakya, as our interviews also show, although they exacerbated social and cultural fragmentation. This study examines the place and importance of the French administration's policies in memory not with a diplomatic history approach, but with an 'insider' historical approach. POLITICAL development , *GOVERNMENT publications , *ORAL history , *CITIES & towns , *POLITICIANS , *LOCAL elections , *ELECTIONS - Abstract
Köprübaşı, a district in the Province of Manisa in the Aegean region of Turkey, was established in 1958. Considering the constantly changing administrative structure of Köprübaşı, this study discusses the settlement's political life from 1968, when it became a municipality, to 2004. In line with this purpose, archival documents, official publications, and written sources have been reviewed, and many oral history studies have been carried out. Based on the information collected, the political life of Köprübaşı was examined by dividing it into three periods: from when it first became a municipality in 1968 to the military coup of September 12, 1980; from 1980, when it was turned into a district, to 1990, and from 1990 to the 2004 local elections. Thus, the people, organizations, events, and elections that made up the political life of Köprübaşı have been discussed within the framework of a specific plan. As a result, the reflection of the political atmosphere throughout the country at the local level has been addressed in relation to Köprübaşı. This study investigates the establishment of Köprübaşı and the development of political life in the district, which continued in parallel with the factors such as its establishment during the Democratic Party period and the fact that its founders were Democratic Party politicians. DRAWING techniques , *TURKS , *RESIDENTIAL areas , *ORAL history , *RURAL geography , *DEMOGRAPHIC change - Abstract
Particularly in rural areas, "deserted/depopulated" settlements are frequently encountered. The underlying factors can be political, geographical, economic, or demographic. Emigration is one of the most frequently mentioned factors among all these. Mobility of people with different motivations, in most cases, creates residential areas that have become depopulated. The emigrations experienced in Western Thrace have created a large number of depopulated settlements. The nature of this process, its causes, and the number of settlements currently lying in ruins top the list of issues ignored by studies on Western Thrace. In this study, Western Thrace Turks are dealt with the “depopulated” places they left behind in the post-migration period. The issue of depopulated villages in Western Thrace and their reasons are examined through a representative example. Dağkaramusa village and its process of “depopulation” are the research subject. Oral history interviews were held with two participants who emigrated from Dağkaramusa on different dates. During the interviews, the sketch drawing technique was used. Explanations in the field claim that the Greek state has been following policies and implementing practices aimed at cleansing the region from the Turkish population. Similarly, findings show that Greece directly intervened to depopulate Dağkaramusa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study tries to understand Ankara’s social and daily life in the period from 1950 to 1980 by focusing on the Güvenevler neighbourhood and more specifically on the accounts of the inhabitants of Güneş Sokak. The study utilizes the existing body of academic literature concerning the recent history of Ankara to examine the inhabitants of Güvenevler—which became one of the very first neighbourhoods after Yenişehir where the elite of the early Republican times resided—in terms of their familiarity to the urban life of the UlusÇankaya axis, as reported to-date in written and oral sources. This is a research of oral history conducted through semi-structured interviews, and based on places of daily life, which allows for an interpretation of Ankara’s social life in the light of the accounts of its first-hand witnesses. Hence, the direction of the limited amount of research on the recent history of Ankara has switched -this type of research previously relied on using public places or buildings, names in the public record or press resources- into the use of oral history techniques; this time with the unique focus on individuals who actually made history happen. The work is aiming at examining with whom the social and daily life of the capital, as indicated by the interviewees, was shared in the period of 1950-1980, determining how this was experienced, what sort of approval mechanisms—if any—were in operation, and discerning what kind of trends it displayed over time, in terms of habits. Findings of the article were evaluated with three themes of “City and Urban Culture,” “Working Life and Work,” and “the Gender of Memory: Ankara of the Women Interviewed” which emerged from the study and discussion of the accounts of the participants. “City and Urban Culture” provides detailed information concerning what kind of place Çankaya was, how relationships concerning belonging operated, with whom the participants of the study shared their neighbourhoods, and how they lived together. Under the second heading, the approaches of the interviewed group towards the notion of work were examined. From the very outset, the present research did not succeed in reaching male individuals enough; hence Ankara was to a great extent framed by the individual memories of women participants.

In the context of Ankara, the subject of this article is Birtan Kundura, located in the Küçükesat Region. With its original and unique story, Birtan Kundura contributes to historiography and architectural historiography as a reading tool of the transdisciplinary study through a social history perspective. It, therefore, includes a narrative that lies in the periphery of the interior through the perspective of subjects not included in the official historiography, via contextual evaluation, periodical examination and urban oral testimonies. In this research, ‘Birtan Kundura’ and Birtan Family are considered as the creators of micro-stories that exist in ‘everyone’s narratives’, making them part of an urban history archaeology in the cross-section of social history. The theoretical framework of the study is founded on Michel Foucault’s Archeology of Western Culture (2011), Patrick Nuttgens’ The Story of Architecture (1983) and Bernard Tschumi’s Questions of Space (2004). The methodology involves oral history, taking its source from individual stories (Perks, R., 1998). In this sense, it transforms the holistic historical narrative into a tool that deepens structural and semantic content through an alternative approach that includes the social: in this case, spatial production and actors. The aim of this article is to present the change, transformation and extinction of daily habits through an interior space, and to make a structural/semantic assessment of the space, which adds value to the holistic narrative, looking at the past and the future.
