- Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine how parents' support for their children's science homework and the goal orientation of students in science homework predict their deep learning and management strategies that students use when doing homework. For this purpose, among quantitative research approaches, correlational method was used in the study. The sample of the study consisted of 328 middle school students enrolling in public schools in Erzurum. As data gathering tools, the Parental Homework Support Scale, Homework Goal Orientation Scale and Homework Strategy use Scale were used. The results of the hierarchical regression analysis revealed that the content- and autonomy-oriented support of the parents were positive predictors of deep learning and management strategies. The mastery and performance goal orientation predicted the management strategy positively, whereas the work-avoidance negatively predicted it. Among the goal orientations, it was seen that only the mastery goal orientation predicted the deep learning strategy and the relationship was in positive direction. The parental homework support and students' goal orientation in homework explained 61.00% of the variance in the homework management strategy and 53.00% of the variance in the deep learning strategy.

SEARCH & rescue operations , *DRONE aircraft , *MULTIAGENT systems , *TRAFFIC monitoring , *LEARNING strategies , *NAVIGATION - Abstract
Mobile vehicles are widely used in various area coverage applications such as mapping, traffic monitoring, search and rescue operations. Appropriate positioning model and effective learning strategy are required to improve the coverage process. Mobile vehicles can adapt to dynamic environments and find the optimum locations with the navigation mechanism that includes a motion model. In studies, where the positioning process is managed on the basis of a multi-agent mobile system, multiple agents should complete tasks such as detection, data collection and surveillance with a collaborative approach. This learning-based process can be carried out through mobile agents that can learn to optimize a task in real time. In this study, it is aimed to effectively cover points of interest (PoI) in a dynamic environment by modeling a group of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on the basis of a learning multi-agent system. The target area is decomposed into grids to maximize PoI coverage and minimize energy consumption. Decomposition is performed by considering the location of the target area and the communication distance of the UAVs modeled as mobile agents. However, mobile agents planning to go to grids also learn to avoid collisions. The proposed method has been tested in a simulation environment and the results are presented by comparing with similar studies. The results show that the proposed method outperforms existing similar studies and is suitable for area coverage applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MATHEMATICS education , *EDUCATIONAL evaluation , *STUDENT teachers , *SECONDARY school students , *MATH anxiety , *LEARNING strategies - Abstract
Concept cartoons are two-dimensional graphical drawings that have proven to be one of today's important learning and teaching strategies in many studies. Concept cartoons can be used both in educational activities and in the evaluation of trainings. The aim of the research is to determine the general trends and possible deficiencies in scientific articles on concept cartoons in mathematics education. In order to achieve this aim, scientific articles on the use of concept cartoons in the field of mathematics education in Türkiye between the years 2006-2023 were examined. In this study, the "document review" method was used, which provides the opportunity to review the general trends and important results in a particular research area and to evaluate them as a whole. In the research, 28 scientific articles on concept cartoons in the field of mathematics education in Türkiye were examined. The data collected within the scope of the study were analyzed by descriptive analysis method. The first scientific article on the use of concept cartoons in mathematics education in Türkiye was published in 2006. It was determined that the use of concept cartoons in the examined articles was carried out in order to determine the effect on various dependent variables such as academic achievement, attitude towards mathematics and anxiety. It was determined that most of the studies were conducted in the learning areas of "Numbers and operations" and "Geometry and measurement". It has been determined that the most preferred design in the studies is the quasi-experimental design. It was determined that a significant part of the research was carried out with secondary school students and the sample size was less than 100 people. Multiple-choice test, Likert-type scale and written opinion form were most frequently used as data collection tools in the studies. In the analysis of the data, descriptive analysis with t-test was mostly preferred. Based on the results of the studies examined, it was determined that the use of concept cartoons had positive effects on the variables examined, especially academic achievement and mathematical attitude. Future studies will include preparing and using concept cartoons with the participation of teachers and preservice teachers, and especially the 21st century. It is suggested that it be designed to examine the effects on different variables, including. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LEARNING strategies , *HIGH school graduates , *COGNITIVE styles , *AGE groups , *INFORMATION skills , *DEEP learning , *CONCEPT mapping - Abstract
Today, the development of information and communication technologies has changed the learning styles of students; educational practices based on transferring information as it is are out of date. The views on students’ being active participants in the learning-to-learn process have made learning strategies one of the important issues in the field of education. It has gained importance to provide students with the skills of accessing information, using information and learning to learn. Therefore, student-centered educational activities should be carried out within the framework of innovative approaches in line with student learning strategies. This research was conducted to determine the use of learning strategies by medical documentation and secretarial program students and to determine whether the learning strategies they use differ according to some variables (gender, age, etc.) According to the findings obtained in the study, while medical documentation and secretarial students use comprehension monitoring strategies and interpretation strategies intensively, they use organization strategies, repetition strategies, and effective strategies less frequently. It was determined that some of the learning strategies used by the students differed according to age group, gender, whether they chose the program they studied voluntarily. It has been determined that there is no significant difference between the learning strategies used by the students of the medical documentation and secretarial program and the variables of the type of high school they graduated from and grade level. The factors affecting learning, which is defined as the change in behavior, are generally classified as factors related to the learner, factors related to learning strategies and methods, and factors related to learning material. Learning needs and learning strategies are also included in this classification and are shown among the basic elements that affect learning. This research was conducted to determine the mathematics lesson learning needs and learning strategies of eighth grade students and to evaluate the relationship between these two variables. The study group of the research, which was carried out using the general scanning model, consists of 301 eighth grade students studying at the secondary school affiliated to the Erzurum Palandöken and Tortum District National Education Directorate in the 2020-2021 academic year. The data of the research were obtained with the learning needs and learning strategies scales. The data were analyzed with frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation and correlation techniques using SPSS 24 and AMOS 24 package programs. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the eighth grade students were aware of their learning needs regarding the mathematics course, they used learning strategies above the average, and there was a positive, moderate and significant relationship between the need for learning and the use of learning strategies. Various recommendations have been presented in accordance with the results obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study attempts to identify learning strategy preferences of the gifted students studying at the science and arts center within the context of social studies course and the learning problems they have experienced while learning the subjects of the social studies course. The study was conducted as a descriptive research. Learning Strategies Scale was deployed as a data collection tool and administered to 55 gifted students. Two open-ended questions were posed to the students and the responses were received in writing in order to gain more in-depth information regarding the learning strategies students use and to identify the problems they have encountered in social studies course. Descriptive statistical methods and independent groups ttest were used during data analysis. The data obtained from open-ended questions were analyzed through content analysis. The study results revealed that students were willing to use repetition, interpretation, attention, and social-emotional strategies, and these preferences did not significantly differ across gender, school type and having a private room. A significant difference was identified across social-affective strategies in terms of class level. The difference was found to be in favor of the 5th graders. Gifted students were determined to face problems during social studies course related to concentration, understanding the subject, forgetting what has been learned in a short time and memorizing the dates of events. They were found to solve these problems by trying to concentrate, studying more, asking for help from the teacher, doing research, revising the subject, taking notes, making plans and using mnemonic devices. CRITICAL thinking , *EXPERIMENTAL groups , *LEARNING strategies , *SCHOOL dropout prevention , *ATTITUDE (Psychology) , *CONTROL groups - Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of reflective thinking activities supported by the POE strategy (Prediction-Observation-Explanation) on several learning products in "The Structure and Properties of Substances", an unit included in the Seventh Grade Science and Technology Curriculum. The study was based on the pretest-posttest control group design. The population was comprised of two different groups of students, namely 7/A and 7/B, who studied at a Primary School in Diyarbakir. The study lasted eight weeks, during which the experimental group was provided with reflective thinking activities supported by the POE strategy (POE form learning logs, negotiated learning and purposeful - reflective group discussions, asking questions to oneself, self-assessment) whereas the control group was taught through the activities recommended by the Ministry of National Education. A comparison between the experimental group, which was provided with reflective thinking activities supported by the POE strategy, and the control group, which was taught through the activities recommended by the Ministry of National Education, confirmed that the experimental group has significantly higher achievement, student's retention the Science, positive attitude to the learning domain "Substance and Change", science process skills, and academic risk-taking level. VOLTAGE regulators , *PID controllers , *LEARNING strategies , *MACHINE learning , *OPTIMAL control theory - Abstract
This article presents a modified version of atom search optimization (ASO) algorithm that uses the opposition-based learning (OBL) to improve the search space exploration. OBL is a commonly used machine learning strategy for increasing the performance of meta-heuristic algorithms. As a new design method, the opposition-based ASO (OBASO) algorithm was proposed for the first time in determining the optimum values of the proportional-integralderivative plus second order derivative (PIDD2) controller parameters in an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system. In the design problem, a new objective function, including the integral of time-weighted squared error (ITSE) and overshoot all together, was optimized with the proposed OBASO algorithm to find the best values of the PIDD2 controller parameters. The performance of the proposed OBASO tuned PIDD2 (OBASO-PIDD2) controller is compared to that of the classic ASO tuned PIDD2 (ASO-PIDD2) controller as well as the PID, fractional order PID (FOPID) and PIDD2 controllers tuned with modern meta-heuristic algorithms. Comparative transient and frequency response analyzes were conducted to assess the stability of the proposed approach. In addition, considering the possible changes in AVR parameters, the robustness of the proposed approach was tested. The extensive simulation results and comparisons with other existing controllers show that the proposed OBASO-PIDD2 controller with a new objective function has a superior control performance and can highly improve the system robustness with respect to model uncertainties. COLLEGE teachers , *TEACHER training , *TEACHER education , *LEARNING strategies , *READINESS for school ,UNDERGRADUATE education - Abstract
The general teaching principles, which should be followed by students, especially teachers, and other stakeholders in education, play a guiding role as a compass in achieving the goals of education. From pre-school to university, no matter in which teaching level, type of school, course, unit or subject; regardless of the branch of teachers and the teaching level of the students; Regardless of which teaching-learning model, strategy, method and technique is used by a teacher, all of these variables should be in accordance with the general principles of teaching. These principles are generally taught to teachers in the undergraduate education process. As a result of the literature review, no resources could be found that provide the integrity of the general principles of teaching and no research directly related to the subject could be reached. This study was conducted in order to cover the general principles of accepted teaching in the literature in a comprehensive manner and to reach all general principles of teaching in a single study. As a result of the study, 27 general principles of teaching were compiled and explained in detail. It is hoped that this study will contribute to the process of teacher training, and literature, to all individuals who are instructor and learner, especially university lecturer and teachers.
