Hydrogen is an alternative fuel, which can be used alone or mixed with certain amount in fuel and air in spark ignition engines. Using hydrogen in a conventional spark ignition engine improves combustion process and reduces pollutions emissions. In this experimental study, hydrogen was used as a supplementary fuel in a single cylinder, four stroke, spark ignition engine without any modification and it's effects on exhaust emissions and engine performance were investigated. Hydrogen was added to the air-fuel mixture in the intake manifold of the engine at 4 %, 8 % and 12 % rates without changing the Stoichiometric ratio. The experiments were performed at full open throttle operating conditions. Using hydrogen as a supplementary fuel in the engine reduced carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions and specific fuel consumption. However, volumetric efficiency, output power and torque were decreased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
