A 15-year old through breed mare was admitted to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Erciyes University in Turkey with a history of infertility was followed up clinically for the subsequent two breeding seasons. The owners reported that the mare had no signs of estrus and pregnancy for the previous two cycles if appropriate. A decreased ovarian activity and inability to exhibit spontaneous estrus was determined by ultrasonography and clinical examinations. Following the repeated uterine lavage, the estrus was induced by long term progesterone and prostaglandin (PG) treatments. The mare responded to each exogenous hormone treatment and exhibited estrus. In spite of the fact that pregnancy was established for three times, all of the conceptions terminated with embryonic mortality. Since the mare did not exhibit estus and could not maintain the pregnancy, it was decided to apply by exogenous hormones. For this purpose, after the uterine lavage, the estrus was induced by progesterone releasing intravaginal device (PRID) and PGF2α, and the mare was mated at the end of the second breeding season. Once the pregnancy was identified by ultrasonography on the day 15, 1 g hydroxyporgesterone caproate (Proluton Depot, Schering) was administered once in every four days until the 40th day of gestation and then once in every 10 days between the days 40 and 120. Thus the natural pregnancy could be maintained until parturition. It was concluded that the exogenous hydroxyporgesterone caproate administrations can be useful in maintaining the pregnancy of mares with the high risk of embryonic losses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
