The way audiences perceive media messages varies according to three different reading methods under the title of coding/decoding theory put forward by Stuart Hall. These reading methods are based on the idea that the individual moves from a passive to an active position in the face of media messages and is free to perceive the media message within the framework of certain criteria. The aim is to determine how the conservatism and secularism codes of the Kızılcık Şerbeti series are interpreted by audiences. The research is a qualitative study and the data collection method is in-depth interview method. The sample was determined as the Kızılcık Şerbeti series and the analysis was carried out with 8 participants. The data were analyzed using the descriptive analysis method. As a result, it was seen that the participants mostly made a dominant reading of the conservatism and secularism codes in the Kızılcık Şerbeti series and thought that these codes in the series reflected the truth. Participants think that conservative and secular women are marginalized and humiliated. At the same time, participants feel uncomfortable about the codes of conservatism and secularism and often read these codes in the series with an oppositional reading method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bu çalışma, "aşağıdan tarih" perspektifini kullanarak Afrika'nın karmaşık toplumsal tarihine derinlemesine bir bakış sunmaktadır. Bu yaklaşım, genellikle geleneksel elit merkezli anlatılarda göz ardı edilen, marjinalleştirilmiş grupların hikayelerini ve deneyimlerini ön plana çıkarmaktadır. Afrika sosyalizmi, sömürge öncesi toplumsal değerler ve Pan-Afrikan ideallere dayanan özgün bir sosyalizm türü olarak, bu perspektifin değerini göstermek için çekici bir vaka çalışması sunmaktadır. The subject of this study revolves around the examination of the reception processes of Azerbaijani viewers regarding their practices of watching television channels broadcasting in Türkiye within the framework of cultural studies, particularly within the context of religious perceptions. In this regard, employing the viewer-centered reception method within the tradition of Cultural Studies, the reception modes developed by participants living in various cities of Azerbaijan who watch religious content from Turkish television programs were scrutinized. To ascertain the identification of dominant, negotiated, and oppositional reading forms utilized in audience reception research, and to obtain data regarding meaning-making and reception practices concerning the contents watched by Azerbaijani viewers, a total of 4 different focus group discussions were conducted, consisting of 36 participants. These discussions took place with participants residing in the cities of Baku, Sumqayit, Ganja, and Nakhchivan in Azerbaijan who follow Turkish television channels. As a result, the study revealed that content containing religious knowledge or broadcasting religious programs through television is received by viewers through various readings. It was understood that viewers engage in diversified negotiated and oppositional readings within the content contexts, generally as participants, regarding religious content presented in various formats.

Islamic art, as an indicator, defined art productions determined by religious and geographical limitations. Islamic works of art, in general terms, are the productions of societies governed under the rule of sharia. This situation aims to name and give meaning to the perspective of the definer and the society in which the definition takes place. Art, as a branch of science in the West, has built its development on secular thought. For this reason, the canon knowledge of art was formed by the stylistic changes that Western society experienced culturally and politically. Islamic art, like all non-Western societies’ art research, began on the basis of ethnographic research. In this context, research objects were seen as cultural production, not as works of art. For this reason, Islamic art experts have become experts in anthropology, religion and political history, as well as art history. The research will evaluate the problems caused by the inclusiveness of Islamic art, which has become socialized with this orientation, by examining the formation of the Islamic art image. In this analysis, it is aimed to reveal the ideological background of the image of Islamic art, which has developed as a unifying term by ignoring differences. Globalization has led to the hybridization of culture, becoming an increasingly interesting research topic. This is a reflection of the cultural changes in modern society. Globalization allows for and also causes interaction between cultures worldwide. Consequently, different cultures interact with each other, resulting in a hybrid culture. The process of globalization has been accelerated by advancements in communication, transportation, and technology on a global scale. This has increased mutual interaction between cultures worldwide, accelerating cultural hybridization. This article will discuss the reasons and consequences of globalization and cultural hybridization, as well as their impact on cultures.

Intelligence studies are settled in a wide range of literature. Although this plane is based on the genetic context of intelligence specific to human nature, it also necessitated a social context specific to human nature, and this context greatly expanded the existing literature. Therefore, intelligence has entered the agenda of many different research fields, not only with its genetic dimension, but also psychology, educational sciences, business, management and organization research, sociology and cultural studies. The diversity of opinions about what intelligence is, has brought about the types of intelligence and many types of intelligence have been mentioned in different contexts and explanations. Although the current intelligence research literature has wide and distant historical ties, it is seen that the relationship between culture and intelligence has become clear in recent years and is discussed with the definition of 'cultural intelligence'. In this context, cultural intelligence is defined as the individual management of cultural differences. This study primarily aims to reveal the agenda of the discussions on the relationship between the concepts of culture and intelligence. In this direction, the study has drawn the basic framework of the interface established between culture and intelligence and the methodological line in which empirical validity is tested, and as a conceptualization, it has opened up the limits and possibilities of cultural intelligence within this framework. Prof. Dr. Umay Türkeş Günay is a well-known folklorist in Turkey and abroad. While writing her doctoral thesis, she applied to Elazig tales the Propp method, which was developed by Russian scientist Vladimir Propp in his work "Morfogija Skazki", published in Leningrad in 1928, which marks the beginning of her scientific works. She is the first scientist to implement the Propp method, which is frequently used by folklorists today, in Türkiye. She started her career at Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geogra- phy, and continued at Hacettepe University, thus creating the Hacettepe University school. She led the establishment of the chair of Turkish Folklore at the same university between 1985-1991. She received the title of "Associate Professor" with her research titled "Aşık Style Poetry Tradition and Dream Motif". She served as a member and consultant in commissions and committees related to culture, folklore and education activities of various institutions such as the Prime Ministry of the Republic of Türkiye, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of National Education, UNESCO and the State Planning Organization. In addition to her 5 books, Prof. Dr. Türkeş Günay has hundreds of publications including articles, papers, introductions-critiques, essays and translations. Prof. Dr. Umay Türkeş Günay, who continues her duty as the Dean of the Faculty of Education at Girne American University, sheds light on young researchers with her scientific articles and speeches. Scientists are people who produce, research, question, present their knowledge to the world of science and train young scientists. Prof. Dr. Umay Türkeş Günay, a scientist who has devoted her life to Turkish cultural studies, is principled, open to different suggestions and extremely objective as an administrator. She is uncompromising in scientific and business disciplines. She never conducts her relations with the people she works with on the subordinate-superior plane. By displaying her respectful style towards identities and personalities to both academic staff and students, she approaches young academics and students both like a mother and a teacher. In this study, information about Prof. Dr. Umay Türkeş Günay's life, her academic and administrative duties, the theses she supervised, and the books, articles and papers she wrote is given. In the study, the following books of Prof. Dr. Türkeş Günay, each a value in itself, were examined in detail: "Elazig Tales and Propp Method", "Aşık Style Poetry Tradition and Dream Motif in Turkey", "Risâlet-i Nushiyye and Yunus Emre", "History of Turks", and "Criticism of Turkish Culture". Based on the works of Turkish culture researcher Prof. Dr. Umay Türkeş Günay, attention was drawn to the messages she conveyed to the Turkish society and the importance of her books was examined. In the study, the views of Prof. Dr. Umay Türkeş Günay about science and the situation of the Turkish world in the historical course were pointed out and her suggestions and solutions were discussed. In addition, the articles written by Prof. Dr. Umay Türkeş Günay on the importance of critical perspective as regards the development and growth of societies are also included within the scope of the study. In addition, the bibliography of Prof. Dr. Umay Türkeş Günay's works is provided. Thus, an attempt has been made to draw a scientific portrait of Prof. Dr. Türkeş Günay based on the works. In our age where artificial intelligence products cannot replace human translators with emotional intelligence despite all the technological developments, it is also possible to observe that the importance attributed to the translator as an individual is increasing. The figure of the translator has become a symbol of modern existence in today’s world since it acts as an intermediary between different languages and cultures. The translator finds its response in the world literature in the context of the individual’s self-positioning and rebellion against technological developments with his emotional intelligence. In this context, it can be stated that translator characters in fictional works are increasingly constructed as heroes, however academic works have registered this aspect belatedly. The aim of this study is to examine the novel Kan ve Gül. Bir Kara Dejavu of Alper Canıgüz in terms of the conceptualization of the protagonist who is a translator. The main question for the analysis of this novel is whether this significant change regarding the fictional conceptualization of the translator as a hero has an echo in Turkish literature and a possible new tradition can be traced in this context. Doing this, the results obtained in our qualitative analysis are evaluated descriptively. Discussions about the translator’s position in society, the value s/he receives, and the discussions about the translator’s visibility have gained in importance with the paradigm change that takes place along the axis of the cultural turn. Studies on this topic in Turkey focus on the fictional representation of the translator and his social status, but they do not sufficiently address and trace the consequences of the aforementioned paradigm shift. With this study, the character development of the translator is focused on and the language and structure of the fictional narrative is examined. Furthermore, in terms of the cultural knowledge related to the translator and the profession of translator, it is seen that the character of the translator paves the way for understanding modern human. The novel Kan ve Gül was analysed with reference to approaches of translation studies, literary studies and cultural studies. By this means, this study demonstrated that a new perspective on the translator profession was put forward with the positioning of the translator identity especially in the so-called third space. Thus, an exemplary analysis model for Turkish Literature is presented with the perspective of the cultural turn paradigm that has left its mark on Western literature.

The aim of this study is to establish the relation between gender and culture through cinema, which is a cultural indicator tool. Based on the assumption that there is a parallelism between cultural identity and gender, the study has tried to comparatively read the cultural and patriarchal structure in Turkey and South Korea, the status of being a woman in both countries, and the phenomenon of violence against women through cinema, which is a cultural indicator and national representation area. The starting point of the research is how the construction of gender identities in Turkish and Korean cinema is a part of Turkish and Korean culture and how it is constructed discursively or symbolically. In this context, Lal Night (Reis Çelik, 2012), which is one of the last examples of New Turkish cinema that examines women, and the film Hwal (Yay, Kim Ki Duk, 2005) of South Korean cinema were examined especially by focusing on the representations of child brides and their comparative critical reading was made. Visual analysis and discourse analysis techniques were adapted to the study and movie readings were made. The reading of the films was carried out by applying visual analysis and discourse analysis methods. The study also covered phenomena such as traditions and customs, patriarchal structure, cultural and gender discourses in national cinema, verbal, physical, symbolic violence, social pressure and custom.

K-Pop is a music genre that is rapidly rising among young people all over the world as a product of South Korean popular culture. The main purpose of this study is how the popularity of K-Pop groups can be explained by everyday life and popular culture approaches. For this purpose in the study, firstly, the reflections of popular culture on the individual in daily life will be revealed. Then, popular culture approaches of Frankfurt School and School of Cultural Studies will be compared and a perspective on K-Pop will be tried to be developed with the basic parameters of both approaches. It is understood that KPop reaches fan masses all over the world with the support of social media networks, and in this respect, it has many sides close to the concept of the culture industry put forward by the Frankfurt School. However, when it is tried to be read with the Frankfurt School approach, it has been concluded that a point of view aimed at "understanding" the reasons for reception of popular culture products that have become a part of today's individual's daily life, or in other words, the feelings, thoughts or reactions of the audience, will be ignored. It is seen that a feudal structure did not operate in Turkey during the Ottoman period, as in its contemporary Europe. Because the peasants in the Ottoman Empire lived as free people, not in the form of slaves or serfs. All lands were the property of the state, but it is known that the ağa system emerged, similar to the feudal structure, with the deterioration of the land system during the weakening period of the Ottoman Empire. The aghas, who emerged especially in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions, are also accepted as tribal chiefs. This system, which is one of the most important issues of land reform and modernization studies in the Republican Period, has found wide coverage in all types of mass media, which has a great role in the construction and maintenance of cultural structure. As a structure unique to Turkish culture, the aghalik and tribe order, which is in the memories, has undoubtedly been the main story of the novels. In this context, İlhan Tarus's 1957 novel Yeşilkaya prosecutor and Fakir Baykurt's 1961 novel Oncu Köy were analyzed descriptively. It has been clearly revealed that the novels dealt with reflect the political, socio-cultural issues of the period, and in this way, the negative effects and struggles of the ağa system on the villagers. İngiliz Kültürel Çalışmalar Ekolü’ne göre medya kapitalist sistemin en etkin ideolojik kurumlarının başında gelmektedir. İdeolojik olarak işleyen medya iletilerine karşı bireyler pasif değil, kendi anlamlarını oluşturabilme yetilerine sahip öznelerdir. Bu çalışmada bireylerin medyadan aldıkları mesajı doğrudan kabul eden pasif izleyiciler olmadığı varsayımı ile Halk TV’de 26.04.2019 tarihinde yayınlanan “Medya Mahallesi” adlı haber programının ekonomi bölümüyle ilgili alımlama analizi yapılmıştır. Ekonomi bölümünün seçilme nedeni araştırmanın yapıldığı tarihlerde ülke gündeminde ekonomi ile ilgili konuların büyük bir yer tutmasıdır. Örnekleme, farklı sosyo-ekonomik özelliklere sahip yedi izleyici dahil edilmiştir. Araştırma kapsamında program izleyicilerle birlikte evlerinde izlenilmiş ve ardından derinlemesine mülakat yapılmıştır. Programın izlenilmesinin ardından katılımcılara programın izleyicilerde bıraktığı izlenimleri ölçmek amacıyla önceden hazırlanmış sorular sorularak derinlemesine görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar izleyicilerin medyadan aldıkları mesajı doğrudan kabul eden pasif bireyler olmadığı varsayımını doğrulamıştır. Katılımcılar medya organının kendilerine iletmek istediği mesajın farkındadır. Çalışma katılımcıların medya mesajını alımlamasında ideolojik, sosyolojik ve ekonomik konumlarının etkili olduğunu ortaya çıkarmıştır.

Traversing disciplinary boundaries between literary studies, cultural studies and sociology, this study aims to explore modernity and modernization discussions in relation to Turkey to understand whether Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s uneasiness arose from the idea of modernity itself, its dialogue with tradition, its application in Turkish society or from a combination of all of these. The study presents an outline of the central themes of Multiple Modernities; then it continues with a study of contemporary views of modernity and modernization in Turkey to be able to elaborate on how Tanpınar as a novelist and thinker approaches modernity and understands Turkish modernization project. Most importantly, the study aims to underscore and explore the relationship between Tanpınar’s idea of modernity or terkip (co-existence of dichotomies) and the Multiple Modernities approach by referring to Henri Bergson’s influence on Tanpınar’s ideas and to the parallelisms between Walter Benjamin and Tanpınar.

At the beginning of the issues that people are most interested in from the past to the present about living environments is the topic of place names and what they mean. Names of residential centers often make sense of what happened in the past, the present, and the natural environment. Place names contribute quite a lot, especially to the study of cultural geography. Names of a settlement often give us clues about the history of that region, its geographical features, human characteristics, and ways of thinking. In other words, as the past re-finds and revives in space, place names become flesh and bone in that residential center. In this study, the emergence and changes of the nomenclature of the village settlements in and around Eleşkirt from the past to the present in the historical process were emphasized. In addition, a toponomic examination of existing village names was conducted to show how and according to what the names were made. In this study with the case study pattern, the document review method was used when examining the historical change process of village names. The criteria used by Gülensoy (1998) in the classification of names of life centers in Anatolian geography were used when making toponomic examination and classification of current village names. So, which hosted many civilizations from the past Eleşkirt a result of the review of the names of the surrounding villages and an 84% rate is changing and the old names with new names were found to be significant semantic differences between. A toponomic analysis of the names of the villages in and around Eleşkirt shows that the natural environment is very effective. Water Resources, lithological features, topographic features, climatic conditions, plant and animal features occupy an important place in the village names. As the British Cultural Studies school points out, the mass media construct our perceptions of the world about others through various codes, images, and representations. Especially, questioning how countries differ in representations about foreigners is important to understand the projections of constructed representations in a relevant society. The problem of this study is to reveal how Syrian refugees conceptualized as "foreign" in present cultural and political spheres were represented in the Turkish and German mainstream press. Based on the frameworks of the problem, the theoretical basis of this study is the approaches and determinations of the British Cultural Studies on identity representation and discourse. The purpose of the study is to analyse the relationship between the representation of Syrian refugees and the refugee policies in these countries. In this context, the representations of Syrian refugees in Hürriyet from Turkey and Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) from Germany were analysed within van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model. As a result, it was determined that there was a lack of context because of presenting identities through stereotypes and singularities in the news, and so, the news had an ideological function which legitimizes bureaucratic actions of the countries. Folklore was founded in the 19th century as a branch of cultural studies, and flourished in the 20th century - namely at the hands of Northern American folklorists. New sub-branches, methods, and techniques were introduced. Likewise, family folklore - the importance of which became apparent in the 1950s within the context of the folkloric capacity of various social groups - gradually emerged into a disseminating research field in its own right by the 1970s. Similarly, many a Turkish folklorist has examined certain aspects of family folklore. However, they have yet to conduct any holistic research (which refer to any form of definition, scope, or methodology). Undoubtedly, were they to consider the dynamic characteristics of the family in their respective social and cultural contexts, they would be able to conduct more meaningful research on the folkloric capacity and repertoire of the Turkish family. This would in turn benefit folklore in general, as well as offer invaluable data for other fields of study that concentrate on the [Turkish] family. In this study, we have achieved four things. First, we have conducted a qualitative survey of the literature. Second, we defined the dynamics of family folklore within the scope of the concept of group folklore. Third, we assessed family folklore studies in terms of chronology, objective, scope and method, all the while drawing upon experiences of Northern American folklorists, namely those specializing in sociology, social anthropology, and social psychology. One of the most important research areas of onomatology, which is a field of study related to the cultural structure of language studies, is workplace names. The workplace names reflect perceptibly dynamism of language with regard to functionality and meaning richness. For this reason, it is predicable that the workplace names give us significant clues about feelings and thoughts of people even aboutidentity of the society taking into consideration those names are given by people that live in the society. Although there are many valuablestudies on the field of working place in our country, it is still not as it should be. To this end, aiming to contribute to onomatology in that study, it has been tried for getting tangible data abouthow the naming process happened in Kilis by analysing workplace names in Kilis in point of their meanings. In line with this purpose, the workplace names on Cumhuriyet Street and Murtaza Street which are the most crowded ones have been picked particularly as sample. Turgut Cansever has established the following relation between the religious principles and the structured environment in order to represent the Islamic thought in the production of space: Even if the earth is a divine reflection shaped around the belief of "tawhid", it is a holistic space in which autonomous beings producing new subjectivities are organized by human hands. This article first tried to grasp these mentioned proposals on the basis of Saussure's duality of langue and parole; it, then tried to evaluate them with the concepts of metaphor and metonymy that are significant in linguistics. First of all, it has been witnessed that these concepts belonging to the structuralist tradition of Saussurean are base for analysis in cultural studies. At this point, it has been concluded that metaphor serves to put forward a tangible image in order to privilege an ideal meaning, thus it becomes a mode of representation that makes power inviolable. On the contrary, it has been said that metonymic connections invite to undermine the social hierarchy by emptying authoritarian meaning.
