Aim: Childhood cancer survival has improved significantly with advances in multimodal treatment. However, treatment-related long-term side effects, including dental developmental abnormalities, remain a concern. The aim of this study was to investigate permanent tooth development and associated risk factors in childhood cancer survivors who were treated before the age of six years, focusing on non-leukemia cases. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on childhood cancer cases treated with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy at a single center. Patients diagnosed before the age of six and who were twelve or above at the time of assessment were included. Dental examinations, including Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth index and radiographic assessments, were performed. Statistical analyses were performed in order to identify associations between treatment modalities and dental findings. Results: Of 914 patients, 90 met the inclusion criteria, with 35 participating in this study. The mean age at diagnosis was four years, with a mean follow-up duration of ten years. Root shortening, hypoplasia, and hypodontia were observed to be common dental anomalies. There was a significant association between alkylating agents, vinca alkaloid plus alkylating agents and root shortening (p

Objective: The study mainly aims to determine the current state of psychosocial services offered to cancer patients and the views of nurses regarding the ways to meet patients’ psychosocial needs. Other aims to evaluate barriers to meeting patients’ psychosocial needs and measure nurses' difficulty level of psychosocial assessment and intervention practices. Methods: This multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted with 1189 nurses providing direct care to adult cancer patients in 32 hospitals in 12 geographical regions of Türkiye. The data were collected by a survey prepared in accordance with the aims of the study. Results: Three-quarters of the participants reported that their hospital has psychosocial support services while 67.7% stated that this service was provided by psychiatry consultation. Nearly half (49%) stated that all healthcare professionals are responsible for meeting patients’ psychosocial needs, especially it is an integral part of their nursing duties. However, organizational conditions (48.2%-30.7%) are the most important barriers to meeting the psychosocial needs of the patients. Participants have difficulty mostly in assessing and intervening in psychosocial needs of patients mostly in "sexual problems" and "rejection of treatment", and least in "patients’ reactions to illness". Also, the participants have more difficulty in assessing seven of the 19 psychosocial dimensions and intervening in five (P

The aim of all health screenings, especially cancer screenings, is to increase the survival rate through early diagnosis and treatment. When determining the screening program, many variables are taken into consideration, and actions are taken to improve public health. Health screenings are given immense importance when countries formulate and develop their health policies. If they are appropriate for the health system, health screenings are extremely valuable if they can improve the health of even one person as well as improve public health. As in many countries around the world, cancer screenings are carried out at all health service levels in Turkey, but they are commonly performed for three different types of cancer in primary health care services.

In recent years, various meaning-based intervention programs aiming not only to reduce the negative psychological symptoms experienced by people diagnosed with cancer but also to enrich their lives by connecting with their sources of meaning and values in life, have been devel-oped. The aim of the present study was to systematically examine the characteristics and outcomes of interventions that focus directly on developing a sense of meaning and purpose in life in people diagnosed with cancer. In this context, a systematic literature review was conducted using six electronic databases, namely PsycINFO, MEDLINE, CINAHL Complete, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. As a result of the literature search conducted between 2000 and 2022, 20 studies including 14 different intervention programs focusing on meaning-making and meaning in life for people diagnosed with cancer were identified. The sample of the studies in the review consisted mostly of women, middle-aged and older people diagnosed with advanced can-cer. Breast and lung cancer is the most common type of cancer in the articles in this review. The majority of the studies in the review were theoretically influenced by Viktor Frankl's studies and adopted the existential approach in psychotherapy. When the effects of meaning-based inter-ventions were evaluated, it was found that they are highly effective in improving the sense of meaning, quality of life, and spiritual well-being. It was also thought to have relatively positive effects on anxiety, depression, emotional distress, optimism, and hopelessness levels. Because of these effects, it could be said that meaning-focused interventions are a promising approach both in answering the questions of people diagnosed with cancer about meaning and existence and in reducing their emotional distress. On the other hand, new studies using a more rigorous research methodology are needed to make more comprehensive conclusions about meaning-focused interventions.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to assess clinical (type, grade, symptom, quality of life), demographical, and psychological (social support, anxiety, and depression) risk factors of suicidality among newly diagnosed cancer patients in Turkey. METHODS: 122 cancer patients within their first month of diagnosis were enrolled in the study. Sociodemographic Form, Suicide Probability Scale (SPS), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), European Organization for Research and Treatment (EORTC) quality of life questionnaire (QLQ-C30), Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were given to the patients. RESULTS: There were no relationships between SPS scores and age, gender, having metastatic cancer, being religious, marital status, having health insurance or employment. The EORTC QLQ-C30 cognitive function (p= 0.003, r= -0.267) and emotional function (p= 0.006, r= -0.249) and social function (p= 0.019, r= -0.212) were found to be negatively and weakly correlated with SPS. Among ESAS variables, only severe insomnia was significantly correlated with high SPS scores (p= 0.012). There were no statistical significance between SPS scores and having anxiety (p=0.110) or depression (p=0.591). There was no statistically significant relationship between SPS and MSPSS scores. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: There have been no study published in the literature that assesses the correlation between suicide risk and a variety of clinical and sociodemographic characteristics among Turkish cancer patients who have just received a diagnosis. According to our results, special attention must be given to cancer patients with severe insomnia and poorer cognitive, emotional, and social functioning.

- Abstract
Cancer is a disease that requires long-term treatment, reduces the patient's quality of life and may even result in death. Empowering cancer patients by increasing their level of knowledge and awareness about their disease and ensuring their active participation play an important role in the success of the treatment process. In this study, it was aimed to examine the effect of patient empowerment on quality of life in cancer patients receiving outpatient treatment in a public oncology hospital in Ankara. In this descriptive and cross-sectional study, a questionnaire was applied to 400 cancer patients. The data collection tool consists of Patient Empowerment Scale, SF-12 Quality of Life Scale and sociodemographic questions. It was found that patient empowerment and quality of life were higher in singles, those in the upper income group, young people, those with at least a bachelor's degree, teachers and those who did not have children. A moderate positive significant relationship was found between patient empowerment and quality of life. It is thought that it would be beneficial to support trainings for patient empowerment with digital platforms and to carry out studies that will raise awareness in patients and healthcare personnel, especially nurses who are in close contact with patients. - Abstract
Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) stimulation is a non-invasive therapeutic modality that has been employed in a variety of applications, including skin wound healing, tissue regeneration, blood vessel regeneration, repair of nonunion bone fractures, and dental treatment. Currently, the potential side effects of electromagnetic fields on tissues have not been comprehensively explored, despite their established therapeutic benefits. In this study, we examined the side effects of PEMF devices on whole-body tissues using simulations. The electromagnetic field simulation software CST Studio Suite was utilized, and an RF coil that could output different frequencies (100 Hz, 100 kHz, and 27 MHz) and magnetic fields (0.25 mT, 0.5, and 1 mT) was designed for the purpose of simulations. A realistic rat model, available from the CST library, was employed. Using the Debye equations according to the relevant frequency value, the electrical and thermal properties of the rat were calculated, and the simulation was carried out in two stages: EM and thermal analysis. The specific absorption rate in the tissues with EM simulation and the temperature distribution in the tissues with thermal analysis were examined. The effects created by the PEMF device at different frequencies and magnetic field intensities were presented comparatively. According to the results, the highest SAR value was observed for three different magnetic field intensities at a frequency of 27 MHz, resulting in a temperature difference of 0.7 °C. This study aims to determine the EM effects on rats in a simulated environment according to different frequencies and magnetic field values, as well as to determine whether the thermal effects created can produce a side response. By doing so, it will be possible to improve noninvasive clinical PEMF devices and provide additional information about the interaction of electromagnetic fields with tissues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Copper (Cu) is an essential micronutrient for human cellular and physiological health since it acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in various metabolic processes throughout different organs in the body. Recently, a new type of programmed cell death, known as "cuproptosis," has been discovered and linked to mitochondrial respiration and the lipoic acid (LA) pathway. Cuproptosis is characterised by proteotoxic stress resulting from the gradual accumulation of copper in cells. Although researchers continue to study the mechanism of cuproptosis, the relationship between cuproptosis and different features of cancer is still being explored. This review examines cellular and physiological copper metabolism, the cuproptosis mechanism, and its associations with various types of cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sleep, which is among the basic human needs necessary for a healthy life, is an indispensable need that affects the quality of life. Individuals face sleep problems when sleep duration, quality and regularity are disrupted. In individuals undergoing breast cancer surgery, sleep patterns are disrupted and sleep quality decreases after surgical intervention. In this direction, nurses have great responsibilities in the management of sleep quality and in ensuring the quality sleep process. Evidence-based practices in the care of patients undergoing breast cancer surgery positively affect sleep quality. As a result of the literature review, it is seen that the number of studies examining the factors affecting the sleep quality of patients undergoing breast cancer surgery and evaluating nursing care is insufficient. The aim of this review is to examine the factors affecting the sleep quality of patients after breast cancer surgery in line with the literature and to include nursing interventions applied in this direction.

Purpose: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Although the 5-year survival rates of for non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) ranges from 20% to 70%. The present study investigates the rates of early recurrence in a total of 83 patients operated for NSCLC and presents the related findings in reference to the data available in the literature. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent lung resection for malignancy between March 2019 and September 2021 were retrospectively examined. The patient data, including age, gender, presence of preoperative chemotherapy administration, opera-tions performed, operation dates, pathology results, postoperative staging, survival, and relapses, were documented. Results: A total of 83 patients who underwent lung resection for malignancy between March 2019 and September 2021 were examined. The patients had a median age of 62 years. Of the total number of patients four patients developed recurrence and 79 continued their follow-up without any recurrence. Of the patients who underwent lung resection, eight (9.6%) patients died within the first postoperative 2-year period. The mean survival period of these eight patients was 14.6 months (7–20 months). Conclusion: Although various parameters, such as age, gender, pathological type, and location of the tumor are examined and compared, according to the available data on the long-term survival of surgical patients, it is known that the only parameter that affects survival is the pathological stage of the patient.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between thyroid cancer types and Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Material and Methods: Between 2016-2018, 406 thyroidectomy cases diagnosed in the Pathology department of Hitit University Erol Olçok Training and Research Hospital were retrospectively reviewed from the hospital computer registration system and the archive of the Pathology clinic. Among these cases, patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer were identified. Among the thyroid cancer cases, those diagnosed with DM were identified using hospital records. Cases were classified based on diagnosis, gender, age, tumor type, tumor localization, tumor diameter, lymph node metastasis, and distant organ metastasis. HBME1, Galactin 3, and Cytokeratin-19 expression were analyzed immunohistochemically. Results: There were 109 patients diagnosed with thyroid carcinoma. The mean age of these patients was 51.1 years, and the male/female ratio was 2.9. Cancer cases were most common in the fourth decade. There were 55 (50.5%) cases of thyroid papillary carcinoma, 48 (44.0%) cases of microcarcinoma, 3 (2.8%) cases of follicular carcinoma and 3 (2.8%) cases of medullary carcinoma. Vascular invasion and capsular invasion were observed in 12 cases (11.0%). Lymph node metastasis was present in 2 (1.8%) patients diagnosed with thyroid papillary carcinoma. DM was present in 14 (12.8%) of 109 patients with thyroid cancer. When the DM rate of the patients in our study group was compared with the DM rate in the general population, no statistically significant difference was found (p=0.519). Conclusion: In our study, DM was not found to be a risk factor for thyroid cancer. Due to the low association rate of DM, it is necessary to check the thyroid gland in patients with diabetes mellitus. More data and further studies are needed to indicate that diabetes is a risk factor for thyroid cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Cancer is the second cause of death in the world and in our country. Due to the high mortality rate, problems experienced during treatment and uncertainties about the future, cancer patients experience a very difficult and troublesome process, different from other patients. Just as the treatment plan in oncology patients is made multidisciplinary, patient care should be approached in a multidisciplinary manner. It is recommended that the patient care team includes a medical oncologist, psychiatrist, palliative care physician and nurse. The management of a disease such as cancer, which scares the patient when its name is mentioned and causes fear, helplessness, sadness, anger and panic when the diagnosis and treatment is shared with the patient and their relatives, is difficult as expected. For this reason, patient communication creates a feeling of discomfort in healthcare professionals dealing with cancer, and reporting bad news is among the professional challenges. After the diagnosis is made, the patient’s need for information increases and physicians, who are the most suitable person to meet this need, are responsible for trying to communicate effectively and convey sufficient clinical information to support their patients and help them cope with the disease. The rules and approaches to be followed for effective communication are tried to be summarized in this article. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This study evaluates the psychometric properties of the Cancer Survivors' Unmet Needs Measure (Tr-CaSUN), adapted into Turkish. Material and Methods: This methodological study was conducted with 350 cancer survivors who were followed up in the oncology center of a university hospital. Data were collected between December 2020 and September 2021. A procedure including forward translation, synthesis, back translation, and expert evaluation was followed for the cross-cultural adaptation of CaSUN. The construct validity of the scale was evaluated by Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), criterion validity was assessed by Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale and The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire, and reliability was evaluated by internal consistency coefficient and test-retest method. Results: The content validity index of the scale was determined as 0.96. While adapting the scale, some items were removed to obtain a stronger structure and improve the fit. A model consisting of five factors and 21 items explaining 78.5% of the variance was obtained with EFA. The model had a good fit based on CFA. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the overall scale was 0.93, and the test-retest reliability correlation coefficients were between 0.73 and 0.93. Tr-CaSUN showed moderate and significant correlations with anxiety, depression, and quality of life scales. Conclusion: Tr-CaSUN is a valid and reliable tool that can be used to assess the unmet needs of cancer survivors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Although osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant bone tumor among adolescents and young adults, the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of cancer are not fully elucidated. Cyclophosphamide (CYC) is an alkylating antineoplastic agent widely used in the treatment regimens of various cancers and chronic inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study is to reveal the effect of CYC on Saos-2 cells at the molecular level by determining the expression levels of some matrix metalloprotease proteins (MMP-2 and MMP-9) of cancer progression-related genes. Materials and Methods: Cytotoxicity analyzes were performed by applying CYC to the developed human osteosarcoma (Saos-2) cell cultures. The determined dose of CYC was applied to the 2D cell lines for 12, 24 and 48 hours. As a result of agent application, the expression levels of MMPs, which are metastatic markers in these cultures, were determined by the immunocytochemical method. Results: While MMP-2 and MMP-9 protein expression levels increased in control (PBS) groups in correlation with the extent of duration in the cell cultures created, decreased with CYC administration. Conclusion: It was determined that the expression levels of genes that play a role in metastasis, such as MMP-2 and MMP-9, were decreased by CYC application to Saos-2 cells. These results shed light on molecular studies for the treatment of osteosarcoma cancer.
