Introduction: Latissimus dorsi muscle is a versatile source for defect reconstruction for many areas of the body. Material Methods: Between 2007 and 2011, 12 defects were reconstructed using latissimus dorsi flap. Depending on the defect, flaps were transferred as a pedicled flap on its major pedicle, and segmental pedicles or a free flap and with a skin island, or a part of scapula was contained in the muscle during flap elevation. Results: The size and good vascularization are great advantages in covering large and problematic wounds which may occur after trauma, cancer surgery and congenital defects. Other advantages are easy harvesting and quick and easy learning period for inexperienced plastic surgeons. Disadvantages are restriction in adduction of arm and donor site scar. Conclusion: In order to obtain well-vascularized tissue with good resistance to bacterial contamination and flexibility to shape into the defects, latissimus dorsi flap is a useful surgical option.
