Turkey is the third largest exporter of television series globally, following the United States and the United Kingdom. Turkish TV series are widely popular both domestically and internationally. This is an important indicator of Turkey's cultural influence and soft power. However, the portrayal of Turkish culture and lifestyle in Turkish TV series requires closer academic scrutiny. This study analyses the portrayal of the family in popular Turkish TV series and its potential impact on high school students. It identifies the factors that challenge and transform the family institution, such as divorce, unmarried unions, free relationships, and the transformation of privacy. Additionally, it evaluates the reflections of these factors on the social structure. The content of television and digital platform series has become a significant factor influencing societal perspectives on family structure. The portrayal of lifestyles and family relationships depicted in the series influence how young viewers perceive their family dynamics and values. This study used a survey and thematic content analysis methodology to examine the influence of media, particularly series, on society and the media consumption habits of high school students. These analyses aimed to determine which television series students consume, how the themes that form the basis of this research are represented in these series, and the potential impact of these themes on everyday life. The research sample was drawn from a quantitative survey of high school students attending five different types of high schools, representing various age groups and socio-economic backgrounds. The most popular TV series among high school students in Turkey were identified as ‘Kurtlar Vadisi’, ‘Yasak Elma’, ‘Sadakatsiz’ and ‘Aşk 101’. The family images presented by these series were then examined from a critical perspective. In the qualitative section of the study, the portrayal of family in the series, its impact on young people's perception of family, and the concept of privacy were examined within the context of Cultivation Theory and Agenda-Setting Theory. The data obtained indicate that television series are the most popular form of mass media. The time slots during which series are broadcast are also the most-watched periods of television programming. The nine most popular digital platforms have a global subscriber base exceeding one billion. The findings illustrate that popular TV series have the capacity to alter perceptions of traditional family values and structure, as well as exert influence over the social agendas of young viewers. In particular, the themes of betrayal and the complexity of relationships in the series Yasak Elma, Sadakatsiz, and Aşk 101 have the potential to significantly impact the perspectives of young people on family life. In this context, the findings of the study demonstrate how media content is internalized by young people and how it influences their perceptions of family relationships. In particular, the portrayal of issues such as divorce and free relationships in television series has the potential to significantly influence the perspectives of young viewers on these matters. This may prompt young people to reassess their attitudes towards family values and relationships. The analytical generalizations derived from the research data indicate several significant findings. First and foremost, the advent of phenomena such as divorce, cohabitation (unmarried unions), hook-up culture, and the transformation of privacy threaten to erode the very fabric of the family institution, thereby introducing a host of risks to the institution itself. The mass media, particularly television series, represent the most consumed form of content and exert a profound influence on society, affecting it in a multitude of ways and across a range of dimensions. Television series represent a substantial proportion of the media consumption habits of high school students, with an average duration of 2 hours and 38 minutes on weekdays and 3 hours and 12 minutes on weekends. The most popular television series among high school students are Yasak Elma, Sadakatsiz, and Aşk 101. The content of these series may potentially pose a risk to the family institution, as outlined in the Sowing Theory, and influence the agenda of high school students regarding these issues, as outlined in the Agenda Setting Theory. The objective of the research is to guide educators, family counselors, and policymakers in the development of strategies to facilitate young people's engagement with the media in a constructive and informed manner. Educators can facilitate students' comprehension of the content of the TV series they consume and facilitate discussion of the potential effects of this content, thereby contributing to the development of a conscious media consumption practice. It is recommended that family counselors seek to mitigate the negative effects of media consumption by strengthening communication and relationships within the family unit. It is incumbent upon politicians to ensure that young people have a healthy and balanced media consumption practice. This may be achieved by reviewing media policies and regulations.
