The aim of this study is to determine the shear modulus of a composite including a matrix and long, thin, unidirectional fibers being rigid relative to the matrix material. It is assumed that composite is equivalent to a unique, homogeneous, isotropic and linear material which is named as effective material. Besides, it is accepted that there is no interaction between the fibers in composite. The main idea is the equality of the strain energies accumulated in composite and the effective material under any loading. It is considered that constant torsion moments act at both ends of a composite cylinder. At the end, the shear modulus of the effective material has been determined dependent upon the shear modulus of the matrix and the fibers and the concentration values. The results of the experiments and finite element analysis done for low concentration ratios are compared with the theoretical solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
