Objective: Vitamin D is a steroid hormone that exerts many effects on human health. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by the loss of motor neurons. This can result in a number of complications, including muscle weakness, spasticity, difficulty swallowing, speech disturbances, and, in some cases, respiratory failure. A number of studies have reported an association between vitamin D and various neurological diseases. This study aimed to assess vitamin D levels in patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and compare them with those of a control group comprising healthy individuals. In addition, the correlation between vitamin D levels and functional ambulation levels will be examined. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted involving 29 male and female patients diagnosed with definite amyotrophic lateral sclerosis using the El Escorial criteria and 28 healthy controls from the physical medicine and rehabilitation clinic of medicine. The medical records of the patients were consulted to obtain relevant demographic, clinical, and vitamin D levels. Subsequently, vitamin D levels were compared with those of healthy controls. Results: The results are presented in the following section. The mean vitamin D level observed in the patient group with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis was 20.21±9.53, while in the healthy control group, it was 26.69±8.90. A statistically significant difference in vitamin D levels was observed between the two groups (p=0.034). No correlation was observed between patients’ ambulation levels and vitamin D levels (p=0.202). Conclusion: It can be concluded that patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are at risk of vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency. It is therefore recommended that regular vitamin D levels are measured and treatment plans are developed for these patients.

Objective: The background of our study is to detect the frequency of vitamin D deficiency in hospitalized patients who had been administered physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR) programs and the distribution of vitamin D deficiency according to patient groups. Materials and Methods: A total of 1210 patients (805 females and 405 males) who received a PMR program in the inpatient clinics of a secondary state hospital between 01.01.2017 and 01.08.2022 were retrospectively included in the study. Age, gender, hospitalization diagnosis, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] values were recorded. Results: The median age of the participants was 64 (54-72). The median 25(OH)D value was 13.16 (8.73-19.36). When the participants were categorized into groups considering the diagnoses for which they were applied the physical therapy program, and 25(OH)D values were compared, a meaningful difference was determined between the diagnosis groups (p=0.020). The lowest median value was found in the group with internal derangement of the knee, muscle, and tendon injury group, followed by the neurologic rehabilitation group. The highest median 25(OH)D level was determined in the orthopedic rehabilitation group. Vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency was found in 93,9% of the patients. The neurologic rehabilitation group had the highest severe deficiency ratio (38.1%). Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is often seen in patients hospitalized in PMR services. Therefore, we think measuring vitamin D levels during hospitalization and providing replacement and maintenance treatments if deficiency is detected may improve rehabilitation outcomes.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25 (OH)D] levels and early- and late-onset sepsis in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. Methods: This study was conducted between November 2016 and November 2017. VLBW of infants below the 32nd gestational week were included in the study. Objective:The aim of this study was to evaluate the vitamin D levels, body mass index (BMI), physical activity levels and life-style factors in postmenopausal women and investigate the correlation between vitamin D levels, BMI and physical activity.Materials and Methods:A total of 100 postmenopausal women were included in this cross-sectional study. Objective:This study determines the 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] profile according to season, age, and gender by examining the vitamin D levels of the patients who applied to Cizre State Hospital, which is the warmest district of Turkey, in 2021.Materials and Methods:13,387 patients admitted to Cizre State Hospital were included in the study, and their [25(OH)D] levels were analyzed retrospectively. Aim:“We’re not just fighting an epidemic; we’re fighting an infodemic,” said World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the Munich Security Conference. In this context, we examined vitamin-mineral use frequency as influenced by cyberchondria, or E-health literacy level, and related factors during the coronavirus disease-2019 outbreak.Methods:In this cross-sectional study, participants who were admitted to the outpatient clinics in a tertiary hospital between March 2021 and April 2021 were asked questions on socio-demographic data, the presence of vitamin and mineral use, and knowledge. The cyberchondria scores by the cyberchondria severity scale and the E-health literacy scores by the electronic health literacy scale were assessed based on nutrition type choice. The use of vitamins and minerals was compared between regular and non-regular supplement users. Factors related to the presence of nutritional supplement use were assessed through logistic regression analysis.Results:A total of 417 participants, including those aged 39.3±12.09 years, were found to be regular nutritional supplement users at a rate of 52.99% during the outbreak. The most commonly used supplements were vitamin D (62.8%), vitamin C (54.4%), vitamin B12 (39.6%), zinc (37.9%), magnesium (35.7%), and iron (33.60%). The least used supplement was melatonin (5.30%). Iron, calcium, and vitamin A users had a higher cyberchondria score than non-users (p=0.002, p=0.044, and p=0.030, respectively). Background and Design: Vitamins are necessary for various biochemical functions and are either insufficiently synthesized or not synthesized by the organism; therefore, they are taken from the diet. Many dermatoses such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, acne vulgaris, vitiligo, and pityriasis versicolor, which are associated with vitamin D deficiency, have been reported. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare vitamin D levels between patients with onychomycosis and healthy controls and determine the relationship between vitamin D and onychomycosis. Materials and Methods: Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels were measured in the blood sample for any reason in the last 1 month of patients diagnosed with onychomycosis and healthy controls. Results: The study included 40 participants (21 men). The mean level of serum 25(OH)D of all participants was 12.66 ng/mL. No significant correlation was found between the age of the participants and 25(OH)D levels. 25(OH)D levels were lower in the patient group (10.79+-8.12 ng/mL) than in the control group (13.91+-6.76 ng/mL) (p=0.02). Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that vitamin D levels are low in the Turkish population, but mean values are lower in patients with onychomycosis.

With the increasing demand in recent years, the interest in vitamins has been growing rapidly. The vitamin group that attracts attention with the pandemic period is vitamin D. Therefore, the need to monitor exposure and the amount and amount of vitamins in foods, drugs, and biological fluids makes regular measurement critical. The importance of organic and inorganic (such as nanoclays, ceramics, bioactive glasses and metal oxide nanoparticles) carriers used in ensuring, increasing and protecting the stability of vitamins is of great importance. In this study, starting from vitamin D and its importance, by referring to the methods used in the determination of vitamin D, electrochemical methods will be examined in particular, by referring to the stabilizing inorganic nanocarriers in particular nanoclays, comprehensive reviews will be made about promising possibilities as (bio)detection platforms in the near future. Aim:This study is conducted to examine the correlation between vitamin D deficiency and type 1 diabetes since diabetes incidence is rising and recent studies have revealed extra osseous effects of vitamin D.Materials and Methods:Eighty patients with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes and 30 patients with no systemic disease were included in the study. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD), parathormone (PTH), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) samples were obtained from both groups. Blood gas parameters were also obtained from the diabetic group. Information concerning vitamin D usage during pregnancy and infancy was acquired through personal interviews with patient’s mothers.Results:25-OHD levels were lower in the diabetic group than in the controls (24.43±16.25 ng/mL vs. 34.55±15.03 ng/mL, respectively, p=0.001), but the difference was not significant when seasonal variation was taken into consideration (33.44±17.23 ng/mL, vs. 34.55±15.03 ng/mL, p>0.05). Vitamin D levels were similar between the groups with ketoacidosis and non-acidotic group, p>0.05, for all). Ca, P, ALP and PTH levels were also similar at the time of diagnosis in the acidotic and non-acidotic groups (p>0.05, for all). The relationship between vitamin D use during pregnancy and infancy and the development of type 1 diabetes was similar between the diabetic and control groups (p>0.05).Conclusion:No significant effects of vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency on the development of diabetes and clinical status at admission was detected. Vitamin D intake in infancy and pregnancy exhibited no protective effect against the progression of diabetes. Therefore, it does not seem possible to reach a definitive conclusion about the relationship of vitamin D and type 1 diabetes.

Aim:Recent data have highlighted the association between serum vitamin D deficiency and gastrointestinal system diseases and the effect of vitamin D on intestinal functions. Our study assesses the relationship between IBS disease and quality of life, depression, anxiety, and serum vitamin D levels.Methods:The study was conducted between January 1st, 2020, and April 30th, 2020. The study data were collected from patient files and the hospital’s digital file system. A total of 142 patients with IBS and 142 patients from non-IBS control groups were enrolled in this study. ROMA IV criteria were used to diagnose IBS. Accordingly, the SF-36 quality of life scale score, serum vitamin D levels, the Hamilton depression rating scale (HDRS), the Beck anxiety inventory (BAI), and the participants’ scores were evaluated.Results:The univariate analysis showed that marital status, body mass index, smoking status, glomerular filtration rate, serum albumin, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels were not associated with disease risk. Background and Design: No evidence suggests that any micronutrients are associated with seborrheic dermatitis (SD). The etiopathogenesis of SD is attributed to excessive proliferation of Malassezia species in the skin, deterioration in epidermal barrier functions, and inflammation. Vitamin B12 affects the immune system. Moreover, the ferritin molecule can act as a proinflammatory cytokine and has immunomodulating effects. Vitamin D has immunomodulatory effects and affects the epidermal barrier. Therefore, we thought that low serum levels of these parameters might affect immune responses against Malassezia species that caused SD. The study aimed to compare the serum vitamin B12, ferritin, and vitamin D levels of patients with SD with healthy controls. Materials and Methods: Patients aged 18-50 years who applied to the dermatology outpatient clinic and were found to have SD during dermatological examination were retrospectively reviewed. Objective: Sunlight is the most important source of vitamin D. Obesity is an important risk factor for rickets. During pandemic periods, such as the Covid 19 pandemic, children cannot be exposed to enough sunlight due to the closure of schools, curfews, and other limitations. They are prone to obesity due to malnutrition and inactivity. This study was conducted to show that rickets can develop in children during a pandemic period and to draw attention to the problem. Materials and Methods: Patients who visited a polyclinic-emergency clinic in the 3-month period before pandemic restrictions started (in the early stages of the pandemic) and patients who visited in the 3-month period when there were restrictions (in the late period of the pandemic) were evaluated for rickets. The frequency of rickets along with calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, parathormone and vitamin D levels were compared. Result: While 49/100,000 cases of hypocalcemia were detected in the pre-pandemic period, 123/100,000 cases of hypocalcemia were detected during the pandemic period. Compared to the pre-pandemic period, a 2.5-fold increase was detected in hypocalcemia during the pandemic period. Conclusion: There may be an increase in cases of rickets during periods of long-term restrictions, such as in pandemic periods. INTRODUCTION: Besides the known metabolic effects of vitamin D, its role in modulation of pain is controversial. In our study, we aimed to investigate the possible relationship between demographic data and some biochemical values of blood who has in female patients with low vitamin D levels and neuropathic pain. METHODS: The data of the patients who applied to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Polyclinic between January 2017 and January 2018 were evaluated retrospectively. Seventy-nine female patients with low vitamin D levels who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The painDETECT pain questionnaire was used to evaluate the presence of neuropathic pain. According to this questionnaire, the patients were divided into three groups as no neuropathic pain, suspicious, and present. RESULTS: Neuropathic pain component was detected by the painDETECT questionnaire in 15 (19%) of the female patients with low vitamin D levels. There was no statistically significant difference between neuropathic pain groups and age, education levels, number of births, body mass index as well as plasma values of vitamin D, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone, and calcium in female patients with low vitamin D levels. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: In this retrospective study, we observed similar biochemical data in patients with different degrees of neuropathic pain and low vitamin D levels. We think that it can be prospectively investigated whether vitamin D supplementation will make a difference in treatment the patients with low vitamin D levels and neuropathic pain.

Abstract Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effect of the nurses' fear of catching COVID-19 on healthy lifestyle behaviors and vitamin D use during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design and Methods: This study had a descriptive web-based design. The research population consists of 247 nurses working at Yozgat Bozok University Research and Application Hospital Findings: It was observed that high education level, chronic physiological disorder, not having children and being satisfied with their profession affect healthy lifestyle behaviors positively. Conclusion: It is considered that this study will provide valuable clues about the points that nurses should be supported to cope with the fear of COVID-19 and show healthy lifestyle behaviors during the pandemic. In order for nurses to adopt a healthier lifestyle during and after the pandemic process, to maintain this, to be an example to their patients.

Purpose: We aimed to investigate the factors affecting the etiopathogenesis by comparing the restless legs syndrome patients with the healthy control group in terms of some laboratory parameters. Materials and Methods: Patients who were diagnosed with restless legs syndrome were included in the study. A control group that was similar in terms of age and gender was formed. Both groups were compared in terms of iron, ferritin, iron-binding capacity, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, ALT, AST, hemogram, creatinine, fasting blood sugar, and thyroid hormone levels. Results: 37 patients with restless legs syndrome and 41 controls were included in the study. In the restless legs syndrome group hemoglobin, ferritin, iron, fasting blood sugar, vitamin D, and fT4 values were 12.7 (10.3-16.0) g/dL, 37.3 (3.7-89.4) mg/L, 62 (21-195) μg/dL, 96 (65-250) mg/L, 11.26 (4.20-41.57) ug/L and 1.24 (0.73-2.14) µg/dL respectively, they were 14.8 (12.3-16.1) g/dL, 56 (9-189) mg/L, 90 (30-245) µg/dL, 91 (70-107) mg/L, 17.31 (5.73-32.90) µg/L and 1.08 (0.63-2.04) µg/dL respectively in the control group.There were statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of hemoglobin, ferritin, iron, fasting blood sugar, vitamin D, and fT4 levels. Conclusion: Hemoglobin and iron parameters, vitamin D levels, fasting blood sugar and T4 levels should be evaluated in patients with restless legs syndrome and should be replaced if necessary. Correction of deficiencies may be beneficial for patients' clinics.

Introduction: Coronavirus disease progresses from an asymptomatic stage to a fatal stage characterized by a cytokine storm. Therefore, treatment should focus on enhancing the patients’immune function and preventing cytokine release syndrome. Vitamin-D deficiency is one of the factors triggering cytokine release syndrome. The present study aimed to emphasize the therapeutic effect of vitamin-D supplementation and its potential importance in reducing the disease severity in older adults in the intensive care unit after COVID-19 diagnosis. Materials and Method: The data of 80 patients aged ≥ 65 years who followed up in intensive care clinic. The inflammatory parameters and clinical course of 40 patients whose serum 25-hydroxyvitamin-D level was below 30ng/ml and who received vitamin-D supplementation (case-group) were recorded on the fifth and tenth days of follow-upand compared with those of the other 40 patients who were hospitalized during the initial period of the pandemic and who did not receive vitamin-D supplementation (control-group). Results: Cytokine release syndrome, has developed in the case group rarely. On the 10.day, levels of the inflammatory markers C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, D-dimer, ferritin, interleukin-6, and lactate dehydrogenase were significantly lower and the lymphocyte count was significantly higher in the case group than in the control group. On the 5.day, the interleukin-6 level was significantly lower in the case group. Weaning was performed in nine and four patients in the case and control groups, respectively. There was no significant difference in mortality rates between the groups. Conclusion: Vitamin-D supplementation can help reduce cytokine response. Recommended prophylactically or therapeutically at all stages of coronavirus disease.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the possible role of vitamin D on the clavicle fracture in the newborn. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted between 2018-2020. Infants who were admitted to neonatal intensive care unit due to the clavicle fracture were included. Infants who did not have a fracture, but were admitted to the hospital for reasons instead of exclusion criteria were included as the control group. Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of blood 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels with fibrocystic breast masses and breast patterns. Materials and Methods: The study included 612 patients who presented with breast complaints or referred for routine screening between 2018-2021 and were requested to have breast ultrasonography (USG) and mammography (MG) examinations. Patients were divided into two groups; group 1 consisted of women with fibrocystic mass (BI-RADS 2-3) and group 2 consisted of women without breast mass (BI-RADS 1). These two groups were compared by age, breast USG, MG results, and blood 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels. Results: Of the 612 patients, 310 (51%) had fibrocystic mass in their breasts, while 302 (49%) had normal breasts. The mean age of both groups was similar. Those with fibrocystic mass in the breast had lower vitamin D levels and higher breast density than the control group. The group with higher breast density had lower vitamin D levels, and there was a negative correlation between vitamin D level and breast density Conclusion: Our study revealed that women with fibrocystic masses in their breasts (BI- RADS2 and BI-RADS3) had higher breast density and lower vitamin D levels than women without breast mass.

Purpose: We aimed to investigate the relationship between first trimester vitamin D, vitamin B12 and ferritin levels with preeclampsia and neonatal outcomes. Materials and Methods: 191 patients diagnosed with preeclampsia (PE) and 99 healthy pregnant women were included in the study.. Age, gravida, parity, body mass index (BMI), mode of delivery, birth weight, APGAR score, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission and delivery week were recorded. First trimester vitamin D, vitamin B12 and ferritin levels were determined in laboratory analyzes. Evaluation was made by separating three groups as without PE, with PE and with severe PE. Results: Differences were found between BMI measurements, birth weeks, birth weights and NICU acceptance values (p=0.003; 0.001; 0.001; 0.001 respectively). Babies in the PE group had lower mean birth weeks, birth weights and APGAR scores. In the PE group had a higher rate of cesarean section (p=0.001). The vitamin D level of the PE group was lower than the group without PE. It was found that the vitamin D level decreased in proportion to the severity of PE. The B12 level of the non-PE group was higher than PE group (p=0.001). The ferritin level of the non-PE group was found to be lower than the PE group (p=0.001). Conclusion: Low vitamin D and B12 levels and high ferritin levels in the first trimester may be beneficial in predicting preeclampsia. We think that especially vitamin D, B12 and iron supplementation is a simple but effective approach to reduce perinatal morbidity and mortality in preeclampsia.

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, D vitamini eksikliği olan erişkinlerde Paroksonaz (PON) ve Arilesteraz (ARE) enzim aktivitelerini araştırmak, D vitamini eksikliğinin oksidatif stres ve kardiyovasküler hastalıklar için risk belirteci olan PON-1, ARE ve Lp (a) üzerindeki etkilerini değerlendirmektir. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışmaya D vitamini eksikliği olan 43 hasta ve benzer demografik özelliklere sahip olan 37 sağlıklı birey dahil edildi. 25 (OH) D'nin 20 ng/mL' nin altında olması D vitamini eksikliği olarak kabul edildi. Gruplar arasında PON-1, ARE enzim aktiviteleri, Lp (a) ve serum lipid düzeyleri karşılaştırıldı. Bulgular: D vitamini eksikliği olan hastalarda PON aktivitesi sağlıklı kontrol grubuna göre düşük bulundu. Gruplar arasında ARE aktivitesi ve Lp (a) benzer düzeylerdeydi. D vitamini ile PON arasında pozitif yönde bir ilişki gözlemlendi. Sonuç: D vitamini eksikliği olan grup daha düşük PON-1 aktivitesine sahipti. D vitamini eksikliğinin neden olduğu oksidatif stres artışına, LDL düzeylerindeki artış ve HDL düzeyindeki azalma ile birlikte PON-1 aktivitesinin düşüklüğünün neden olabileceği düşünüldü.

Aim:Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency (VDD). The prevalence of VDD in different countries is between 65-100% in these patients. The present study was undertaken to find the prevalence of VDD among sickle cell children and to assess the association of co-morbidities with VDD.Materials and Methods:Total 89 children who were attending a sickle cell clinic/admitted to paediatric wards of a Tertiary Care Centre were enrolled in this study. After their history, clinical examination and anthropometry were investigated, samples were taken for serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D ng/mL and calcium level assessment. The outcome was morbidity in sickle cell children in terms of frequency of pain episodes, number of febrile episodes, number of blood transfusions and total number of admissions.Results:Out of 89 cases, 58 (65.17%) cases were deficient in vitamin D (30 ng/dL). The mean vitamin D level was 19.42ng/dL. Morbidity in SCD was more in VDD children compared to vitamin D sufficient children with significance in the number of pain episodes and the total number of hospital admissions but not in the number of admissions for acute febrile illness or the total number of blood transfusions.Conclusion:VDD was prevalent in 65.17% of children with SCD. Children between 4-12 years were more affected with a male predominance. As this study involved children with SCD alone, future studies need to be carried out involving children without SCD to establish a better possible link between vitamin-D and SCD morbidity.

Objective:This study aimed to determine the relationship between vitamin D levels and anxiety and depression in patients with chronic pain.Materials and Methods:A total of 160 patients, including 125 female and 35 male patients, who were >18 years old and capable of answering study questions were included in this study. Age, gender, height, weight, duration of disease, diagnosis and comorbid status of the patients were recorded. Body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2) was calculated for each patient. Pain was evaluated using the visual analogue scale (VAS), which ranges from 0 to 10. Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) scores were recorded. The patients were divided into two groups (group 1 vitamin D: 0-19, group 2 vitamin D: 20-60 ng/mL) according to vitamin D levels. Also vitamin D levels were noted.Results:The mean age of the patients included in this study was 58.72±8.21 years. Vitamin D deficiency was found in 42.8% of the patients, of which 80.7% were female patients.In patients with chronic pain, there was no correlation between vitamin D levels and age (r=0.185, p=0.026); BMI (r=0.084, p=0.316); disease duration (r=0.067, p=0.420); VAS (r=0.038, p=0.648); HADS scores for anxiety (r=0.020, p=0.808) and HADS scores for depression (r=0.048, p=0.569). No relationship was noted between BMI and vitamin D levels (r =-0.117, p=0.165) in patients with chronic pain; however, a positive correlation was noted between BMI and VAS (r=0.305, p=0.000) and HADS scores for anxiety (r=0.185, p=0.001) and HADS scores for depression (r=0.0240, p=0.002).Conclusion:In the present study, we found no relationship between vitamin D levels and anxiety and depression in patients with chronic pain. However, we found a correlation between obesity and pain severity. Also we report that obesity is associated with anxiety and depression. Implementing lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and reduction of vitamin D deficiency, can improve anxiety and depression in patients with chronic pain.

Objective: To identify families who had delayed their children's chronic disease follow-up or postponed their children's health follow-up due to the Covid19 pandemic and to inform them about the importance of the issue. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted between March and May 2021. Families with children between the ages of 0 and 18 who were registered within the Altındağ Municipality service area and who agreed to participate in the study were contacted by phone and asked the questionnaire questions. Results: A total of 283 families participated in the study. The median age of the children was 84 months. 32.9% of the families lived in regions with a low socioeconomic development level and 40.6% of them lived in regions with a high socioeconomic development level. 37.5% of mothers stated that they only had only been to family health centers for vaccinations. It was found that 1.8% of infants and children had not received vitamin D prophylaxis and 1.8% had not taken iron prophylaxis regularly, 2.8% had delayed vaccinations, 0.7% had experienced vaccine rejection, and 2.1% had not taken a hearing test. 27.2% of the participants had not been screened for anemia and 45.9% had not had eye examinations at all. It was determined that 64.3% of these school-age children and adolescents had not had their annual health follow-ups. There was a chronic disease in 16.3% of the children who participated in the study. It was determined that 78.3% of these children had not gone to health controls and 10.8% of them had stopped their medication due to the fear of catching COVID-19 in hospitals. Conclusion: It was determined that there have been significant disruptions in child health follow-ups and chronic disease follow-ups due to the pandemic. It is necessary to raise awareness about the importance of chronic disease follow-up and health follow-up for children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship between the level of Vitamin D and the development of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) in patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). Materials and Methods: 67 AS patients were included in this cross-sectional descriptive study. Socio-demographic data, waist circumference and systolic blood pressure were evaluated. Fasting blood glucose, HDL cholesterol, Triglyceride and Vitamin D values were recorded. Diagnosis of MetS was made according to National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel (NCEP/ATP III). Disease activity and quality of life were assessed. Results: In the present study, a significantly negative correlation was detected between Vitamin D levels and MetS in AS patients. HDL levels and Vitamin D levels were significantly lower in patients with MetS. Multiregression analysis showed that MetS was positively associated with BMI, Triglyceride level, fasting glucose and negatively associated with HDL cholesterol and Vitamin D. Conclusion: This study shows that vitamin D may have a role in the development of MetS in patients with AS. However, more studies are needed to explain the relationship between vitamin D and metabolic syndrome in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.

Background and Design: In this study, we investigated the role of vitamin D deficiency and autoimmunity in chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) etiopathogenesis and their impact on the disease severity. Materials and Methods: Sixty patients with CSU aged between 18 and 65 years were enrolled to the study. The control group comprised 40 healthy individuals who had no episodes of urticaria or any other chronic diseases. An autologous serum skin test (ASST) was performed in all patients. In addition, 25 hydroxyvitamin D, thyroid autoantibodies (TA), anti-nuclear antibody (ANA), and basophils were evaluated in all groups. Urticaria activity score-7 (UAS7) and dermatological quality of life index (DLQI) of all patients were examined. Results: Angioedema was more frequent and UAS7 was higher in ASST-positive patients than ASST-negative patients (p=0.035, p=0.018, respectively).

Objective: To determine the relationship between disease stage, hospital admission time, and vitamin D levels in patients with Idiopathic Facial Paralysis (Bell's palsy). Materials and Methods: The hospital registry system was scanned retrospectively and 52 patients diagnosed with idiopathic facial paralysis were included in the study. A control group was formed with 50 participants matched in terms of age and gender. Disease stage was determined according to the House-Brackmann Scale. Clinical and demographic data, vitamin D levels, and disease stages of the patients were recorded. Disease stage, duration of admission, and vitamin D levels were compared among patients. The patients and the control group were compared in terms of vitamin D levels. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of age and gender. The mean Vitamin D level of the idiopathic facial paralysis group was found to be lower than the control group. There was a statistically significant difference between the duration of admission and the disease stage. The duration of admission for patients with stage 2 was found to be higher than those with stage 5-6. When analyzed in terms of Vitamin D, it was observed that the average Vitamin D level of Grade 2 was statistically significantly higher than Grade 4 and 5-6, also, it was observed that the mean Vitamin D level of Grade 3 was statistically significantly higher than Grade 5-6. Conclusion: According to our study results, we determined that vitamin D levels may be associated with development of the disease and disease prognosis. Also, we found that increased disease severity significantly shortened the duration of admission.

Amaç: Bu çalışma hafif dereceli obstrüktif uyku apne sendromu (OSAS) tanısı alan olgularda D vitamini suplemantasyonunun antropometik ölçümler ve vücut bileşimine etkisini incelemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Polisomnografi ile hafif dereceli OSAS tanısı alan ve D vitamini düzeyi yetersiz olan 20 yetişkin erkek (19-64 yıl) çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Olgulara sekiz hafta süresince 50.000 IU/hafta D3 vitamini suplemantasyonu verilmiştir. Çalışma başında ve sonunda tüm olguların bazı antropometrik ölçümleri (vücut ağırlığı, boy uzunluğu, bel, kalça ve boyun çevresi) alınmış ve vücut bileşimi analizleri yapılmıştır. Enerji ve besin ögesi alımları çalışma başında ve sonunda alınan 3 günlük bireysel besin tüketim kayıtları ile hesaplanmıştır. Bulgular: Serum D vitamini düzeyi başlangıçta 19,1±5,16 ng/mL iken suplemantasyon sonrası 41,6±10,25 ng/mL’ye yükselmiş ve olguların %90’nın D vitamini düzeyi normal sınırlara ulaşmıştır. D vitamini suplemantasyonu sonunda olguların antropometrik ölçümleri ve vücut bileşimlerinde anlamlı fark olmamıştır. D vitamini suplemantasyonu sonunda diyet enerji, protein, yağ alımlarında ve apne hipopne indeksinde anlamlı azalma saptanmıştır. Sonuç: Hafif dereceli obstrüktif uyku apne sendromu tanısı alan olgularda D vitamini suplemantasyonun enerji ve besin ögesi alımını etkileyebileceği görülmüştür. Ayrıca yetişkin olgularda D vitamini suplemantasyonunun hastalık prognozuna olumlu etkisinin olabileceği düşünülmektedir. Ancak D vitamininin vücut bileşimi ve antropometrik ölçümler üzerine etkisini incelemek amacıyla daha büyük örneklem ile uzunlamasına yapılacak çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the correlation between vitamin D level and pain, functional status, and quality of life in individuals with osteoarthritis (OA). Material and Method: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was completed with 138 individuals. The study was carried out between April 15 and August 30, 2019, at the Orthopedics Clinic of a Research and Practice Hospital. Results: 70.3% of the individuals had a vitamin D level of 20 ng/ml and less. It was determined that there was no significant correlation between individuals' vitamin D levels and age, VAS, WOMAC, and SF-36 subscales (p>0.05). Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is very common in individuals with OA. It may be recommended to conduct randomized controlled studies with larger sample size.

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı endometriozisi olan infertil hastalarda, endometirozis ve D vitamin düzeyi arasındaki ilişkiyi değerlendirmektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışma grubunu, endometriozisi olan infertil hastalar, kontrol grubunu ise endometriozis dışı infertilite nedeni olan hastalar oluşturmaktadır. Çalışma grubuna sadece histopatolojik endometriozis tanısı bulunan hastalar dikkate alınmıştır. Hastaların yaşı, vücut kitle indeksi, infertilite süresi, ilk adet yaşı, sigara içme geçmişi, infertilite faktörü ve gebelik öyküsü ve anti-müllerian hormon düzeyleri gibi sosyodemografik ve klinik özellikleri ile laboratuvar değerleri ünitemizin kayıtlarından elde edildi. Bulgular: Çalışmaya toplam 100 hasta dahil edildi. Çalışma ve kontrol gruplarında D vitamini düzeyleri karşılaştırıldığında, sırasıyla; 12,0 ± 8,6 ng/mL karşılık 14,7 ± 10,6 ng/mL ve AMH düzeyleri karşılaştırıldığında, sırasıyla; 2,0 ± 1,8 ng/mL karşılık 2,6 ± 2,3 ng/mL olarak tespit edildi. Grupların alt grup analizlerinde, sadece yaş dilimine göre 15-25 yaş arası olan hastalarda D vitamini seviyeleri arasındaki fark anlamlı bulunmuştur (5,8 ± 2,4 ng/mL karşılık 15,0 ± 8,5 ng/mL;. Sonuç: D vitamini eksikliği olan endometriozisli genç kadınlarda D vitamini takviyesi faydalı olabilir.

Objective:To determine the influence of total duration of breastfeeding on bone mineral density (BMD) and vitamin D levels.Materials and Methods:A total of 1,218 postmenopausal women of mean age 59.59±9.64 years were included in this retrospective analysis. The demographic data, vitamin D levels and BMD measurements of the lumbar spine and femur neck were recorded.Results:According to the World Health Organization criteria, 41.3% of the women were identified to be osteoporotic, 42% as osteopenic and 16.7% as normal. Objective:This study aims to determine the 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] profile of the region based on season, age and gender by examining the vitamin D levels of patients who applied to the Siirt Training and Research Hospital from Siirt and neighbouring provinces.Materials and Methods:[25(OH)D] levels were analysed retrospectively in patients who applied to Siirt Training and Research Hospital. The study included 31,151 patients who were admitted to the hospital. Were included in the study. [25(OH)D] levels were determined according to the age and gender of patients and the seasons of the year. A serum [25(OH)D] level 30 ng/mL sufficiency.Results:The average [25(OH)D] level in patients aged 0-15 years (n=6,166) was 20.59±0.14 ng/mL, in patients aged 16-30 years (n=10,791) it was 15.65±0.10 ng/mL, in patients aged 31-45 years (n=6,649) it was 16.28±0.14 ng/mL, in patients aged 46-60 years (n=4,120) it was 16.83±0.23 ng/mL and in patients ages 61-75 years (n=2,597) it was 16.03±0.15 ng/mL.Conclusion:It has been observed that [25(OH)D] level, which is low in winter and spring, is high in summer and autumn when it is exposed to the intense rays of the sun. However, this level is lower than the desired levels in all four seasons. This low level of vitamin D may be related to the absence of almost any vitamin D synthesis in winter and inadequate vitamin D intake associated with foods.

Background and Design: Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology that most commonly affects the skin and oral mucosa. Vitamin D is a steroid hormone with immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The purpose of this study was to evaluate serum vitamin D levels in patients with LP and to compare these with those of healthy control subjects. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight patients with a diagnosis of LP and 46 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. The serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D, calcium, phosphate and parathyroid hormone were studied from blood samples collected from all subjects. Results: The serum levels of vitamin D were lower in the LP patients compared to the controls and in the oral erosive LP patients compared to the other LP patients, although the difference was not statistically significant. There were no statistically significant differences in other laboratory parameters between the patient and the control groups. Conclusion: Our study revealed no clear relation between LP and vitamin D levels. The results of our study suggest that other factors except vitamin D, particularly probable triggers, play a more dominant role in the immunopathogenesis of LP. Further studies with larger patient populations assessing serum vitamin D levels in different types of LP and vitamin D-related gene polymorphisms are now needed in order to reveal the relation between LP and Vitamin D more clearly.

Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are among the important health problems worldwide. Vitamin D, which is synthesized by sun exposure (specific wavelength ultraviolet UVB rays), is known to act as a natural protector, preventing and delaying many chronic and autoimmune diseases, as well as its regulatory role in calcium and phosphate metabolism. People and other creatures need vitamin D to keep their lives healthy and strong. In this review, after briefly mentioning the importance of vitamin D for health, information based on the studies in the literature has been presented about the creatures rich in vitamin D metabolites, especially for the purpose of people to benefit from other organisms as a source of vitamin D. Although there are few ecological data on this subject, various findings have been compiled about the species that synthesize and accumulate vitamin D, which we can use as natural sources. In the studies done, phytoplanktonic algae, reindeer lichen, fungi and also fish and lichens accumulating vitamin D are among the creatures that produce high amounts of vitamin D with the effect of UVB. In addition, in this study, explanatory information on the photochemical synthesis metabolism and biology of the vitamin D and the biological and environmental factors affecting the formation of vitamin D are included. This review focuses on the potential of living things that can provide a predictable vitamin D source for humans.

Objective: Studies have shown the relationship between vitamin D levels and many chronic diseases and skin diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between vitamin D levels and commonly seen dermatological diseases like seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and telogen effluvium (TE). Material and Method: As a result of history and dermatological examination, patients diagnosed with SD and TE were included in the patient group, and patients diagnosed only with TE were included in control group. Serum 25-OH vitamin D levels were measured in all patients. Results: A total of 149 volunteers, 69 patients (SD and acute TE; n =42 and SD and chronic TE; n =27) and 80 controls (acute TE; n =69 and chronic TE; n =11) participated in the study. Serum 25-OH vitamin D level was 14.59±4.68 ng/mL in patients with acute TE, 16.86±7.31 ng in patients with chronic TE, 15.33±7.97 ng/mL in patients with SD and acute TE, 17.73±5.17 ng/mL in patients with SD and chronic TE. Serum 25-OH vitamin D level was significantly higher in patients with SD and chronic TE compared to patients with SD and acute TE (p <0.05). There was a medium strength significant positive correlation between SD and TE duration (r: 0.489) (p <0.001). Conclusion: In this study, vitamin D deficiency was detected in all groups. It may be beneficial to evaluate vitamin D levels in SD and TE patients, and treat them when vitamin D levels are low. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Giriş ve Amaç: Prediyabet, bozulmuş açlık glikozu (BAG) ve bozulmuş glikoz toleransı (BGT) ile Diyabet Mellitus (DM) riskinin arttığı durumdur. Çalışmalar DM’un D vitamini ve Paratiroid Hormon (PTH) düzeyleri ile ilişkili olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu çalışmada prediyabetik hastalarda D vitamini ve PTH düzeyi ile insülin duyarlılığının değerlendirilmesi amaçlandı. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu kesitsel araştırma 1 Haziran 2017 ve 30 Kasım 2017 arasında prediyabet olan 17-87 yaş arası 100 kişi ile yapıldı. Prediyabet durumu çalışmanın bağımlı değişkeni iken, vitamin D düzeyleri, homeostasis model assesment (HOMA) ve biyokimyasal parametreler bağımsız değişkeni olarak belirlendi. Ölçümle belirlenen verilerin analizinde student-T, sayımla belirlenen verilerin analizinde ki- kare, korelasyon testi için Spearman Korelasyon Analizi uygulanarak prediyabetlilerde vitamin D ve PTH düzeylerinin glikoz düzeyi ve HOMA üzerindeki etkisi analiz edildi (anlamlılık düzeyi için P lt;0.05 alındı). Bulgular: Hastaların %27’si erkek, %73’ü kadın, yaş ortalaması 50,50±14,90’ idi. Kadınlarda PTH, erkeklerde vitamin D ve Hb değerleri daha yüksek idi. Kadın ve erkeklerde optimal vitamin D düzeyi (≥ 30ng/ml) oranı çok düşük olup sırası ile %3,7 ve %5,5 idi. Vitamin D eksikliği olanların %45,8’inde insülin direnci var iken, vitamin D optimal olanlarda insülin %20’da insülin direnci vardı. Vitamin D düzeyleri ile VKİ ve HOMA-IR açısından anlamlı fark yoktu (P=0.861). BAG olanlarda BGT olanlara göre glikoz, insülin ve HOMA-IR anlamlı yüksek iken (P lt;0.05), BGT olanlarda yaş anlamlı şekilde daha yüksekti (P lt;0.05). Sonuç: Sonuç olarak prediyabetiklerin takip ve tedavisinin sürdürülmesinde vitamin D düzeyleri dikkate alınmalı gereğinde optimal düzeyler sağlanmalıdır

Objective:Osteopenia and osteoporosis are important causes of morbidity in patients with hemoglobinopathies. This study investigates the association between iron accumulation, vitamin D and bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with thalassemia major, thalassemia intermedia and sickle cell.Materials and Methods:Serum samples collected from 102 patients with hemoglobinopathy were used; the relationship between ferritin, vitamin D levels and BMD, which was performed with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), was investigated.Results:The ratio of thalassemia intermedia, thalassemia major and sickle cell patients with normal BMD according to the DEXA Femoral T-score was 56.25%, 35% and 39%, respectively. The ratio of thalassemia intermedia, thalassemia major and sickle cell patients with normal BMD according to the DEXA lumbar T-score was 31.25%, 7.5% and 41.25%, respectively. Material and Methods: The study was conducted prospectively between January and April 2019 and included 48 patients who presented to the outpatient clinic with lower urinary tract symptoms and who had not received medical or surgical treatment due to BPH (BPH group) and 52 healthy men (Control group) who did not have lower urinary tract symptoms and applied to the outpatient clinic for routine urological control. Vitamin D, total PSA, total testosterone values, IPSS scores, prostate volumes and maximum urinary velocity in uroflowmetry (Q max) of both groups were evaluated. Results: The mean age of 48 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia in BPH group was 65.37 ± 7.24 and in control group without urinary tract symptoms was 64.09 ± 8.22. There was a statistically significant difference between BPH and control groups in terms of the mean values of 25 hydroxy vitamin-D values (p< 0.001). When the patients diagnosed with BPH were examined according to their subgroups; there was no statistically significant difference in terms of 25 hydroxy vitamin D level between moderate LUTS (33 patients) and severe LUTS (15 patients) groups(p> 0.05). Conclusion: Our study has shown that in patients with BPH and LUTS, 25 hydroxy vitamin D levels were lower than those in the similar age group without any complaints. Based on this, it was thought that there might be an improvement in the symptoms of patients with increasing vitamin D levels. To reach a final judgment on this subject, larger number of randomized controlled prospective studies are needed.

Objective:To evaluate knowledge and awareness levels about deficiencies of calcium and vitamin D, and osteoporosis among physiotherapy students.Materials and Methods:A questionnaire consisting of 33 questions was applied to the 3rd and 4th grade students of Kırşehir Ahi Evran University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.Results:The study included 106 students with a mean age of 21.5±1.19 years (female/male: 58/48). The students had knowledge about “calcium deficiency”, “vitamin D deficiency”, and “osteoporosis”. Students with knowledge were asked where they got this information. “School” was specified as the most common source of information in all three groups. The students had accurate information about the clinical symptoms of calcium and vitamin D deficiency. Many students knew what to do to prevent osteoporosis. Although many students knew the foods that are rich in calcium and vitamin D, there was a lack of information on the amount of daily necessity. In addition, many students did not know how often to sunbathe for an adequate vitamin D level.Conclusion:It was observed that students’ knowledge and awareness levels about calcium deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, and osteoporosis are quite high. However, students need to be informed more about foods that are rich in calcium and vitamin D, and the duration of sunbathing.

Giriş ve Amaç: Dünyada yaşlı nüfusun %50-60’ında vitamin D eksikliği vardır. Kritik hastalarda ise vitamin D eksikliğinin (25(OH)D lt;20ng/ml) prevalansı %70’i aşmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Yoğun Bakım Ünitesi(YBÜ)’nde takip ve tedavi edilen 65 yaş üstü; vitamin D verilen ve verilmeyen hastaların prognoz açısından karşılaştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Kasım 2014-Nisan 2015 tarihleri arası hastanemiz YBÜ ’de takip ve tedavi edilen hastaların kayıtları geriye dönük olarak incelendi. Enteral beslenen ve vitamin D desteği alan 20 hasta (Grup D), enteral beslenen ancak vitamin D desteği almayan 20 hasta (Grup K) arasında yoğun bakıma kabul sırasında(T1), 7.(T2) ve 15.(T3) günlerde ölçülen vitamin D, albümin, prealbumin, total lenfosit, CRP düzeyleri ve triceps kas kalınlığı açısından fark olup olmadığı değerlendirildi. Bulgular: İki grup demografik veriler açısından benzerdi. Grup D ile Grup K arasında T1,T2 ve T3 zamanlarında vitamin D düzeyleri, albümin- prealbümin düzeyleri, enfeksiyon oranları, mekanik ventilasyon süreleri, yoğun bakım yatış günü ve mortalite açısından istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark saptanmazken T1 ve T2 zamanında total lenfosit(TLS) düzeyleri(p lt;0,05) vitamin D grubunda istatistiksel olarak anlamlı yüksek idi. Hastaların sadece T3 zamanında vitamin D ve diğer değişkenler ele alındığında ise APACHE II değerleri, MV gün, T3 albümin, T3 prealbümin ve T3 total proteinle istatistiki olarak anlamlı ilişki gözlendi. Sonuç: Çalışmamızda vitamin D verilen grupla verilmeyen grup arasında bazı değişkenlerde anlamlı fark gözlenmesi, prospektif ve daha fazla sayıda hasta ile yapılacak çalışmalar açısından yol gösterici olacağını düşünmekteyiz.

D vitamini güneş ışınları aracılığıyla deride sentezlenen ve iskelet sistemi üzerinde olumlu etkileri bulunan steroid yapıda bir hormondur. D vitamininin bağışıklık sistemi üzerindeki rolü, bağışıklık hücrelerinde D vitamini reseptörlerinin belirlenmesi ve makrofajlar, monositler ile aktive edilmiş T hücreleri gibi bağışıklık hücrelerinde D vitamininin aktif formunun tanımlanmış olmasıyla saptanmıştır. D vitamini, katelisidin ve defensin gibi antimikrobiyal peptidlerin salınımını artırarak, otofajiyi uyararak, Toll benzeri reseptörlerin sinyalizasyonunu değiştirerek, anti-inflamatuvar sitokinlerin salınımını artırarak ve dendritik hücrelerle T ve B lenfositlerin regülasyonunu sağlayarak doğal ve kazanılmış bağışıklık sistemini modüle etmektedir. Mycobacterium tuberculosis etkeninin sebep olduğu sistemik bir bakteriyel enfeksiyon olan tüberküloza karşı, D vitamini bu mekanizmalarla olumlu etki göstermektedir. Bu derlemede D vitamininin tüberküloz hastalığı üzerindeki etkilerinin son güncel literatür verilerine göre incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
