The issue of unemployment has become individualised. In recent decades, Swedish social- and labour market policies have changed towards an emphasis on activation, which places greater demands on the job seeker to actively seek work, participate in employment initiatives and improve their employability. This thesis studies how these requirements are expressed in the municipal acti­vation of young people (18-29 years of age). The purpose of the study is to highlight and problematise the activation’s creation of employable individuals and its consequences for young people’s identity work. The study is based on ethnographic field work in an activation programme. The data consists of field notes, interviews and audio recordings from the pro­gramme’s daily activities and the young people’s tripartite meetings with pub­lic employment officers, which are also attended by staff from the activation programme. Based on Goffman’s perspective on total institutions and an inter­actionist, discursive and narrative approach, the study illustrates activation from the point of view of the programme participants’ own perspectives and narratives. The analysis shows how the programme screens young people from their environment and at the same time monitors and controls them. A daily sched­ule has to be followed, which means that all the young people do the same activity at the same time. The analysis identifies the prominent discourses that set the framework for the design of the activation and the everyday activities, as well as how the young people’s situations and needs are understood. The participants are categorised as “problem young people” with faults and fail­ings. Included in the activation is a desire to change them into employable and capable individuals who can fit into the adult world. However, it is the young people who are responsible for working on themselves in accordance with the prevailing ideals. Thus, it is not primarily about reinforcing their competences in aspects like education and experience of working life. Rather, the young peo­ple are encouraged to adopt new ways of thinking and characteristics, such as being active, flexible, reflexive, well-behaved and accepting responsibility. They are challenged to show motivation, self-confidence and social and com­munica­tive skills. By encouraging the young people to change themselves and adopt certain personal characteristics, the activation conveys the image of un­employment as a personal problem that requires a personal solution, rather than a social problem. In the young people’s narratives, the activation is depicted as meaningless in that the programme does not lead to employment. At the same time, the young people say that the programme has given them new values and ways of seeing themselves. The activation can therefore be understood as a practice of normalisation as well as a semi-total institution that disciplines and changes the participants.

Varje år byter ett antal elever som är döva eller har hörselnedsättning (D/HN) skolform under pågående grundskoleutbildning. Det har inte funnits en samlad bild av varför bytet sker och hur eleverna upplever omställningen. Vi har i denna studie genomfört semistrukturerade intervjuer med nio högstadieelever med syftet att bidra med kunskap om elevers erfarenheter av att byta skolform från en auditivt orienterad skolmiljö (grundskola) till en visuellt orienterad skolmiljö (regional specialskola). Den tematiska analysen har inspirerats av Schlossbergs (1981; 2011) transitionsmodell, vilken kan appliceras på alla typer av övergångar, förändringar och byten oberoende av om de är förväntade eller ej. Elevernas byte av skolform kan ses som en flytt från en språklig och kulturell kontext till en annan, och deras erfarenheter har delats in i tre huvudteman; flytta ut, flytta in samt göra sig hemmastadd. I intervjuerna framkom varierande erfarenheter, vilket visade att gruppen D/HN-elever som byter skolform var en heterogen grupp. Resultatet visade dock på en del likheter mellan eleverna, exempelvis att en majoritet av eleverna har upplevt ett socialt utanförskap i den auditivt orienterade skolmiljön där de inte känt sig jämlika sina skolkamrater eller fått likvärdiga möjligheter till fungerande lärsituationer. Byte av skolform har påverkat elevernas identitetsarbete och de flesta eleverna beskrev efter bytet en känsla av att vara samma som de andra, känna sig hemma och känna tillhörighet med andra D/HN-elever. Vidare visade resultatet även en förskjutning i elevernas syn på teckenspråk från att ha varit ett hjälpmedel till att vara en del av deras sociala och kulturella identitet. Bytet av skolform har lett till att elevernas identitetsarbete påverkats positivt, och eleverna har gått från att vara marginaliserade till att vara inkluderade. Slutsatser som drogs utifrån resultatet var att D/HN-elever behöver få möjlighet att utveckla en positiv social identitet istället för en marginell sådan, och för att kunna göra detta är tillgång till visuellt orienterade miljöer av vikt. Every year a number of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students change school settings during their years in compulsory school. Why the decision is being made and how the students themselves experience the transition are questions that have not been asked when researching school placement for DHH students. This study aims to contribute with knowledge about DHH students' experiences in changing from an auditory oriented school setting (compulsory school) to a visually oriented school setting (compulsory special needs school for deaf and hard-of-hearing students). The thematic analysis is informed by Schlossberg's (1981;2011) transition model, which is a model that can be applied to any form of change or transition whether expected or unexpected. The change in school settings can be seen as a move from one linguistic and cultural context to another, and the students' experiences have been divided into three themes; moving out, moving in and making oneself at home. The interviews point to different sorts of experiences which show that this group of students is vastly diverse, although with some significant similarities. The change in school setting has had an effect on their identity work and the students describe it as feeling at home, being the same as the others and as a sense of belonging with other DHH students in the visually oriented school setting. The result shows that the students have gone from seeing sign language as a tool that can facilitate communication to recognizing it as a language that is a part of them and their social and cultural identity. As stated above there has been a positive effect on the students’ work on their identities and they feel included instead of marginalized. For DHH students to develop a positive rather than a marginal social identity, the students need access to visually oriented settings.

This essay is a qualitative interview study that investigates what enables motivation for publicly employed nurses and how this affects their choice to be publicly employed in front of the alternative of becoming staffing nurses. As analysis tools, the sociological concepts of valuerational and rational-purposeful actions, idealization and identity work is use in conjunction with the psychological theoretical model Self-determination theory. The results of the study shows that publicly employed nurses experience a continuity in their work situation, which they imagine that they could not experience to the same extent if they were staffing employees. Continuity enables them, through their competence, to satisfy their intrinsic interests and motivations - to meet people and make something meaningful for others. Denna uppsats är en kvalitativ intervjustudie som undersöker vad som möjliggör motivation hos sjuksköterskor inom landstinget, och hur detta påverkar deras val att vara landstingsanställda framför alternativet att bli bemanningssjuksköterskor. Som analysverktyg används de sociologiska begreppen värderationellt och målrationellt handlande, idealisering och identitetsarbete i samverkan med den psykologiska teoretiska modellen Self-determination theory. Undersökningens resultat visar att landstingsanställda sjuksköterskor upplever en kontinuitet i sin arbetssituation som landstingsanställda, vilket de föreställer sig att de inte skulle kunna uppleva i samma utsträckning om de vore bemanningsanställda. Kontinuiteten möjliggör för dem att genom sin kompetens tillfredsställa sina inneboende intressen och motivationer - att möta människor och göra något meningsfullt för andra.

I denna studie har ett internetbaserat stödforum för utmattningssyndrom analyserats i syfte att bidra med ny kunskap om identitetsskapande i interaktion, mellan individer med egen erfarenhet av utmatningssyndrom. Studien har utgått från en diskurspsykologisk inramning och sökt svar på frågeställningarna; I) vilka föreställningar om sjukdomsidentiteter förhandlas fram på ett internetbaserat stödforum för utmattningssyndrom? och II) hur konstrueras normalitet inom ramen för de sjukdomsidentiteter som produceras? Analys av medlemskategoriseringar har använts som huvudsakligt analytiskt verktyg vilket syftat till att synliggöra vilka kategorier som gjorts relevanta av forumdeltagarna. Analysen visar fem identitetspositioner vilka uttryckts som att vara: sjuk, utmattad, kunnig, inte ensam och snart bättre. På forumet görs försäkringskassan till en utanför- grupp vilket stärker gemenskapen av sjukdom bland forumdeltagarna. Denna gemenskap legitimerar att dela med sig av egna erfarenheter av utmattningssyndrom och att positionera sig som kunniga gentemot vårdapparaten. Samtidigt synliggör analysen hur forumdeltagarna konstruerar samsyn kring normalitet i utmattningen och vad som anses som normal sjukskrivningsperiod med anledning av utmattningssyndrom. I sin tur möjliggörs också identitetspositionen av att vara på bättringsvägen.

De bilder som omger oss i vardagen är alla en del i hur vår identitet formas och utarbetas. Kläder och mode kan betraktas som en del av dessa bilder och har således stor påverkan på hur identitetsprocesser ser ut och och uppvisas. Den första introduktionen av oss själva sker genom de plagg vi bär och att konsumera plagg är en vikig del i skapandet av sig själv och sin identitet. I den här studien har jag genom en designpedagogisk workshop fått ta del av fyra gymnasieungdomars taktila och verbala utsagor kring modekonsumtion och identitetsuttryck. Med utgångspunkt i sina egna garderober har deltagarna genom praktiskt arbete utmanats till att omvärdera och uppdatera ett plaggs egenskaper och genom samtal synliggjort individuella och kollektiva konsumtionsmönster. De har utifrån egna erfarenheter diskuterat plaggets relation till stilen och jaget och hur den relationen förändras över tid och i olika situationer. Tre primära diskurser framträder i studien där den första diskursen ringar in stilen som identitetsuttryck. Den andra placerar stiluttrycket i en konsumtionsdiskurs med hänsyn till identitet och grupptillhörighet. Den tredje sätter stil och identitetsuttryck i förhållande till hållbarhet samt etik och moral.

The purpose of this study is to examine how five teachers experiencing and think about social media's impact on their students and teaching. And also what effects the teachers describe that social media has contributed to in students' identity work. I have, based on the purpose of this study issued following questions: What is social media, according to the teachers?, How do the teachers think about their students' use of social media?, How do the teachers think that social media has influenced their teaching? And how do the teachers describe / experiencing the impact that social media has contributed to in the students' identity work? This study is made through a qualitative method based on interviews with five teachers. The results show that all of the teachers agree that social media is a part of our present. The teachers’ talk about various ways social media has affected their teaching, but most often the discussion has been about values, laws and regulations, concerning the etiquette on social media. The teachers’ believe that social media has had an effect on the children's identity. They believe that children today, focus on appearance, perfection, performance and material objects, which automatically will affect children’s self-image. According to the teachers, social media has created a new way to show appreciation between individuals, where they are appreciated by comments and likes. But let’s all agree that social media is a social place, where children can feel part of their social togetherness and culture.

Med utgångspunkt i de senaste årens uppmärksamhet kring den svenska Polisen och de konflikter som uppstått mellan arbetsgivare och arbetstagare väcktes ett intresse att studera vad som låg bakom dessa problem. Det visade sig att merparten av de problem som uppstått grundade sig i att anställda uppträtt på sätt som inte ansågs gynnande för organisationen och dess förtroende hos allmänheten. Studien ämnar besvara frågor kring hur Polisen som organisation formar sina anställda med utgångspunkt i teorier om identitetsarbete. En kvalitativ undersökning genomfördes med studier av organisatoriska dokument och genom semistrukturerade intervjuer. De intervjuade består av personer verksamma inom den svenska Polisen. Dessutom intervjuades personer från svenska Polisförbundet, det fackförbund som organiserar närmast alla Sveriges yrkesverksamma poliser. I resultatet framkom indikationer på, utifrån de teoretiska begrepp som har valts för studien, att hur individerna formar sina identiteter är relativt individuellt. Dessutom tycks individerna påverkas mycket av sina kollegor, kanske snarare mer än av organisationens ledning. Hur information förmedlas ut i organisationen framställdes dessutom som vag av de intervjuade. I diskussionen behandlas vidare hur identitetsstyrning tar sig uttryck inom Polisen samt på vilket sätt de anställda ser på arbetet med sina egna identiteter i relation till yrket polis. This interest was triggered as the Police organization attempted to dictate what was appropriate when it came to employee behavior outside of work. This essay intends to answer questions regarding how police employees shape their own identities in order to accommodate the requirements of their profession. A qualitative method has been used, using documents and semi structured interviews. A total of eight people have been interviewed. The results indicated that the organization, in some ways, want to regulate their employees. A few hands-on methods exist, they are however too vague to be regarded as present in the day to day work of employees. The police organization does not offer clear guidelines and it is up to the employee to determine their own individual identity. Overall, there is more impact on individuals behavior from colleagues than from Police policy. In summary, we will examine the Swedish police organization with reference to theories about identity work in organizations and in relation to the empirical data.

Since 2006 there have been two major changes to the Swedish Education Act. In January 2006, the first change, concerning nine-year compulsory school, took effect. The Act now requires that Personal Development Plans (i.e. individuella utvecklingsplaner – IUP) be introduced for students in elementary school, special schools for disabled children, Sami schools and special schools. The second change came into effect in July 2008. The content of the personal development plan was expanded to contain not only plans for future development, but also teachers’ written assessments of students’ knowledge and learning process. To implement the new regulations and support teachers’ work, many schools have turned to digital tools. The combination of new regulations and digital tools has generated new, unexplored circumstances for teachers, students and parents. The aim of this thesis is to provide a greater understanding of the work process with students ́ personal development planning and the role of digital documentation in this process. The aim is also to investigate students’, teachers’ and guardians’ experiences and participation. The main focus is on experience of the work processes associated with the recent reform of methods for communicating students’ knowledge and learning processes. To better understand this new educational situation, students’, parents’ and teachers’ experience of working according to the new regulations has been analysed and problematized. The research questions address how the use of digital tools influences the process, in what ways the process affects students’ and parents’ participation and in what ways the students’ identity work is affected by the communication and work process. The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews, a survey study and a document analysis. The material was analysed through an inductive thematic analysis. The analysis draws on activity theory and theories focusing on participation at higher and lower levels, and on social relationships through concepts of power and control, as well as visible and invisible pedagogy. Patterns in the material were analysed using concepts of communicative and strategic communication, negotiation of influence, self-regulation and techniques for disciplining, positioning processes and the individual’s approach to a prevailing norm. The concept of cultural capital has also been used as an analytical concept. Students, parents and teachers all state that the process is now, finally, about the student’s personal learning. Thus, the study shows that students’ goals and personal planning do not significantly affect teaching in schools. Responsibility for achieving the goals is left to the student alone. Students can decide when and how they will work towards the goals in the plan. The follow-up process is concentrated to the discussion on progress with parents each semester where new goals are set for the student. The study also shows that the process with the personal development plans is focused on students’ behaviour and on transforming students into model students who perform at their absolute best. The study also shows that parents are entering as a new player – their child’s representative in negotiation. Teachers on the other hand are trying to manage the work process rationally by copying and pasting written opinions among several students and formulating and adapting students’ goals to suit their teaching. Students’ personal development plans are significant texts where players other than the student and his or her parents or teachers, are able to scrutinize and criticise the content as the student’s plans are public documents. All in all, the study shows that the whole work process with students’ personal development plans requires both awareness and understanding of the importance of language and wording. The work process is not only about learning; it is also about power, control and negotiation. ”Ja, det blir typ mycket bättre koll på, jag tror det blir bättre så här koll på vad man behöver träna på”, beskriver Ella 11 år. Ella refererar till de ändringar i grundskoleförordningen som gör gällande att alla elever i grundskolan ska ha en individuell utvecklingsplan med skriftliga omdömen och vad hon tror att de nya bestämmelserna kommer att leda till. Vad får de nya bestämmelserna och arbetsprocessen med de individuella utvecklingsplanerna för betydelse för elever, föräldrar och lärare? Vad får användningen av ett digitalt verktyg i sammanhanget för betydelse? Handlar arbetsprocessen med de individuella utvecklingsplanerna med skriftliga omdömen enbart om att synliggöra elevers kunskaper och lärande eller innefattar den även något annat? Den här avhandlingen handlar om den arbetsprocess som sker när elever, föräldrar, och lärare förbereder och genomför utvecklingssamtal samt upprättar individuella utvecklingsplaner för elevernas lärande med stöd av ett digitalt verktyg. Syftet med avhandlingen är att med stöd av aktivitetsteori och teorier om delaktighet och inflytande samt makt- och kontrollprinciper ge en ökad förståelse för arbetsprocessen med de individuella utvecklingsplanerna. Syftet är också att utforska betydelsen av digital dokumentation och hur arbetet inverkar på möjligheterna till delaktighet och inflytande samt elevernas identitetsarbete i arbetsprocessen. Både elever, föräldrar och lärare uttrycker i studien att det nu äntligen handlar om elevens eget lärande och att arbetet med de individuella utvecklingsplanerna möjliggör ett förändrat arbetssätt i den riktningen. Studien visar dock att arbetsprocessen med elevers individuella utvecklingsplaner handlar om mer än enbart elevens lärande. I studien framträder fenomen som makt, kontroll och förhandling. Det framträder också en förestä̈llning om en mönsterelev som förväntas bidra till ett gott arbetsklimat och som presterar sitt allra yttersta. Eleverna, förldrarna och lärarna deltar i skapandet av mönstereleven frå̊n olika perspektiv, med olika motiv och med olika strategier. Elevers individuella utvecklingsplaner med skriftliga omdömen är betydelsefulla texter vars innehåll både kan granskas och kritiseras av andra än eleven, dess föräldrar och lärare i och med att utvecklingsplanen är en offentlig handling. Detta kräver både en medvetenhet och kunskap om arbetsprocessen och vad språket och formuleringarna i de skriftliga omdömena om eleven kan få för betydelse.

Det framträder också en förestä̈llning om en mönsterelev som förväntas bidra till ett gott arbetsklimat och som presterar sitt allra yttersta. Eleverna, förldrarna och lärarna deltar i skapandet av mönstereleven frå̊n olika perspektiv, med olika motiv och med olika strategier. Elevers individuella utvecklingsplaner med skriftliga omdömen är betydelsefulla texter vars innehåll både kan granskas och kritiseras av andra än eleven, dess föräldrar och lärare i och med att utvecklingsplanen är en offentlig handling. Detta kräver både en medvetenhet och kunskap om arbetsprocessen och vad språket och formuleringarna i de skriftliga omdömena om eleven kan få för betydelse.

This thesis is a study of bullying narratives, mainly co-produced in a process of ongoing interaction. The focus is on how narrators rhetorically organize their storytelling and identity work by using discursive resources. The empirical material consists of 12 interviews with, and 12 written stories by people who have been exposed to workplace bullying plus information from three websites about bullying, and previous research. The overarching aim of the study is to identify how a bullying discourse is produced, reproduced, challenged and negotiated in bullied persons’ narratives. Specific aims are to determine how bullying is portrayed publicly, how narrators with experience of being bullied build their stories, how the narratives stand in relation to victimization, what makes it possible to talk about vulnerability and what are its limits, and finally to develop a narrative approach.Theoretically and methodologically, the study has its basis in narrative analysis, discursive psychology, conversation analysis, and metaphor analysis. The study shows how the narrators categorize themselves as active, competent, and consensus seeking. They resist being victimized, but by their use of the interpretative repertoire and a standard story of bullying, they nevertheless become indirectly victimized. What’s at stake, in the narratives, is the question of guilt, which they rhetorically evade by the use of different metaphors. These metaphors depict bullying as a mystery, a lifelong source of suffering, a transformation, a learning experience, a battle, a contagious virus, and a trap. The narrators are constrained by the narrative conditions, the interpretative repertoire, standard story, and narrative form and content – a story of good and evil when creating their own story. The narrative conditions at the same time set the limit for expressing oneself in the identity work. This also means we are part of the production and reproduction of the bullying discourse when I, as a researcher, and the narrators use the repertoire and the standard story in mutual understanding., Helena Blomberg är verksam som universitetsadjunkt i sociologi vid Mälardalens högskola sedan 2001och vid Örebro universitet sedan 2003. Hennes huvudsakliga verksamhetsområde rör metodologiska frågeställningar kopplat till den kvalitativa forskningstraditionen, främst diskurs- och narrativ analys. Hon ingår även i Diskursgruppen vid Stockholms universitet, en tvärvetenskaplig forskargrupp som arbetar med olika diskursanalytiska ansatser.

Syftet med denna studie är att visa hur skolorganisation, skolledning och skolledaridentiteter produceras, formas och omformas i samtalad interaktion samt att visa vilka diskursiva metoder som de samtalande använder för att bygga upp sina begrepp och kategorier och samtidigt göra dem socialt acceptabla i sitt sammanhang. Jag har tagit teoretisk och analytisk utgångspunkt i etnometodologi, socialkonstruktionism och kategoriseringsanalys. Det empiriska materialet består av inspelade ledningsgruppsmöten, som transkriberats noggrant, från en grundskola och två gymnasieskolor, samt intervjuer med tre skolledare. De empiriska studierna presenteras i fyra delstudier, där delstudie I visar hur intervjuare och intervjuad gemensamt bygger upp relevanta ategorier med hjälp av bland annat tidsbegrepp. I delstudie II analyseras hur skolledare i ett arbetslagsledarmöte gemensamt skapar den lokalt producerade organisationen-i-handling. Delstudie III fokuserar hur citeringar av sig själv och andra används i mötessamtal för att forma kategorier och delstudie IV inriktas mot att se hur deltagarna i de probleminriktade samtalen orienterar emot teamet och hur ’vi’ som grupp formas. I samtliga delstudier fokuseras hur kategoriserandet samtidigt är identitetsskapande. De samtalande framställer sig själva som bland annat problemlösare, nytänkare, förändrare och annorlunda än ’de andra’. Kategoriseringsarbete har visat sig ha stor betydelse för interaktionen och identitetsarbete är en viktig del av det som sker i mötessamtal. Skolledning framstår som bland annat gemensamt producerat och inte enbart som ett heroiskt ensamarbete. Tal och samtal kan beskrivas som en viktig del av och i ledningsarbetet. The aim of this study is to show how school organization, school leadership and school leader identities are produced, formulated and transformed in talkin-interaction, and to show methods members use to build concepts and categories making them socially acceptable, in situ. My theoretical points of departure and analytical tools are ethnomethodology, social constructionism and membership categorization analysis. The empirical material consists of recorded talk sequences at regular meetings of school management teams, transcribed in detail, at one primary school and two secondary schools, and interviews with three assistant principals. The analysis of the empirical material is presented in four studies. tudy I shows how the interviewer and interviewee jointly construct relevant categories, using temporal terms as well as other resources. Study II analyzes how school leaders at a team meeting collectively create the organization-in-action. The focus of study III is on how team members use reported speech to produce categories, while study IV is oriented towards how we as a team is produced. All studies focus on categorization work as identity work. The team members and the interviewees give attributes to and make categorizations of themselves and others in order to produce themselves as problem-solvers, innovative, progressive and different. Categorization work has proven highly significant in the interaction, and identity work is an important component of the actions accomplished in the analyzed meetings. School leadership is not produced as a lone heroic effort, but rather as something created by members in interaction. Talk-in-interaction can be described as an important part of and in leadership work.
