This literature review examined existing research studies about the five different personality types according to the five factor model (neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion and openness) and their correlation with fatigue or burnout. The majority of studies in the area has shown that neuroticism is the most dominant trait in the development of fatigue or burnout. One of the questions aimed to investigate whether there are specific personality traits according to the five-factor model that make individuals extra vulnerable to suffering from fatigue or burnout. We also wanted to investigate whether there were personality traits according to the five-factor model that can prevent individuals with these personality traits from developing fatigue or burnout. The result showed that neuroticism is the dominant personality trait that leads to fatigue. We also found personal predispositions in neuroticism in combination with negative thinking and sensitivity to external stressors, as perceived demands in working life and low identification with one's own organisation, to predict fatigue. In addition, the trait agreeableness was found to be a predictor for emotional exhaustion under specific circumstances.
