Welcome to Arstotzka, in this game you play as a passport inspector at the border to the newly conquered land of Kolechia. The game Papers, please is named after the phrase your character says to everyone trying to get access to the country of Arstotzka. The gameplay is a simple point-and-click game within the simulation category of video games, a simulation of a bureaucratic job which consists of checking documentation. The gameplay is not a fantasy nor is it escapism, so in what way is this a compelling game? Papers, please tackle something larger than enjoyable gameplay with satisfying graphics, it tackles the story of how an entire totalitarian state is being upheld by regular people. People just like you and me.

In the pulp production industry one potential problem is the production of gas from microbial activity in the storage tank. If left unchecked such gas production can in extreme cases lead to an explosion. To prevent any such event the current method of maintaining microbial activity in pulp plants is to use hazardous biocides. Such biocides can be expensive and dangerous to handle – therefore a safer and cheaper alternative would be preferred. This study aims to examine and evaluate two potential alternatives: Tannins extracted from trees with natural antibacterial properties and introduction of Lactobacillus plantarum to see if a more manageable bacteria can out-compete the bacteria already in the pulp. The results were measured by observing gas production in different trials where pulp from a nearby plant was mixed with different concentrations of tannins or Lactobacillus. The results showed that this strand of Lactobacillus plantarum had no effect on gas volume production while the pulp mixed with tannins did have some effect by lowering the amount of gas volume produced. However, the experiments with tannins and pulp showed no clear dose-response relationship which most likely is caused by varying quality and handling of the pulp used in the experiments. In summary this study shows that tannins can have an effect on the volume of gas produced by recycled paper pulp by lowering it – although not completely inhibiting it.

The fundamental principle for manufacturing paper is not a complicated one. However, for the paper to acquire specific properties, the process becomes increasingly complicated.Among other things, different chemicals are added, and the process is continuouslymonitored by various systems. One of these systems measures the pH-level of the pulp. This system is however constantly affected by measuring errors, which in turn leads to the incorrect dosage of the carbon dioxide used to lower the pH-level. This could in turn have a negative impact on the properties of the final paper. The underlaying purpose of this project is for the measuring system to ensure an even regulation of pH and therethrough guarantee an even paper quality. For this project, several question at issue, goals and subgoals have been established. The general goals cover establishing a statistical model for the error and estimate possible economical savings. To fulfil the goals and answer the questions at issue, firstly a basic understanding must be established for: concerned parts of the manufacturing process, the effect pH-level has on the process, the measuring principle of the pH-sensor, the design of the measuring systemand the routines concerning the measuring system. With this basis, the occurrence of measuring error is examined for the six measuring points. This is accomplished with two methods: The compilation of historical data and the compilation of manual measurementsexecuted under controlled conditions. The aspects examined are magnitude, frequency and the relation to process related values. Finally, a calculation for costs regarding the measuring system was established. This includes current carbon dioxide and maintenance costs. The result presents a statistical model for the measuring error, divided into historical and near time. The historical model shows that for all the addressed positions, a mean deviation occurred 0.8 pH-units. The model for near time shows significant deviations for four out of the six covered positions, which in turn shows relations to both paper quality and surface weight. With this statistical model possible savings were calculated. This in turn showed the possibility of savings for both carbon dioxide and maintenance. The conclusion for this project is the existence of a measuring error. Also, a connection between this and the process related aspects could be established. Although, the result cannot be completely guarantied. With this, possible savings through better accuracy could be estimated. Though, these were only in the size of 0.075‰ of the company’s total revenue.

Background: Ethnic discrimination means being disadvantaged because of appearance, language, or culture. Discrimination creates physical and mental illness. When nurses and the health care system discriminate against patients based on ethnicity, patients are exposed to care suffering. Care must, according to law, be given on equal terms where all people, regardless of ethnicity, have the right to adequate care. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe patients experiences of ethnic discrimination in health care. Method: The study is a qualitative literature review with an inductive approach which is based on nine scientific articles. Findings: Patients experience ethnic discrimination in healthcare, which is made visible in three themes; unfair care, unfair treatment and reduced participation. Conclusion: Patients risk being exposed to ethnic discrimination at the same moment they seek health care. The discrimination can continue throughout the care chain, independent situation, care facility and country. Ethnic discrimination occurs at both organizational and individual levels. To avoid causing the patients suffering due to ethnic discrimination, the nurse should challenge and reflect on their own prejudices.

If Nordic Paper Seffle AB is going to expand or exchange parts in their production in the future, they have to base their decisions in facts. Today, the production department doesn’t have any cycle times, or activities documented for their three packaging machines. By doing this thesis a time study will be performed with the purpose of documenting the machines activities and to identify bottle necks in the value stream. The thesis has its’ roots in Lean, with tools and concepts profound to the philosophy. The work won’t involve any time studies of the operators in any way. This means that it’s only the packaging machines which will be studied. Circular work will be mentioned to give a clearer picture of the process. The listed activities will be reported in tables together with their cycle times. An analysis will follow each packaging machine for whole groups or single activities, presented as bottle necks. The results will be analyzed and viewed from an efficiency perspective and will be compared to, among other things, the points Lean presents for waste. Here, the bottle necks will be described alongside why they are considered bottle necks for the packaging machines. In connection to this a probable reason and solution is presented. The result is expected to help the company grow and lay a foundation for future studies in related areas that will be further described in the conclusion.

Wood Tube is a start-up company with a new invention, environmental-friendly building bars made out of paper. The product is not yet available on the market, but these bars are likely to be a lot cheaper and easier to use for carpenters when building drywall, where the bars will replace the commonly used plate metal bars for framing. These bars are manufactured in standard lengths and are supposed to be cut on site to fit the local application. As of now they are sawn with a hand saw. This project is about developing a new specialized cutting-tool for easy and fast cutting of the Wood Tube paper bars, with the idea that a customised tool will make the paper bars even more attractive to carpenters and other potential customers. Tests indicate that cutting with shear-blades is the cutting method with the highest probability to meet the product requirements, which include requirements such as the tool being manually powered, highly portable, does not produce sawdust, is resistant to corrosion and being able to cut paper bars of different dimensions. Using systematic methods for generating concepts and the final selection, this results in a handheld scissors-concept, similar to a lopper. A lot of inspiration for the tool has come from the benchmarking of a lopper with gears from the brand Fiskars. Tests have been performed to determine the cuttability of the paper bars, as well as to predict the loads which will be exerted on the cutting tool. The cutting tool is designed using the methods Brain-Aided-Design (BAD), Pen-Aided-Design (PAD) and Computer-Aided-Design (CAD), along with calculations for tool-strength and risk-analysis (FMEA). The end result are blueprints for a tool which has been specifically developed for cutting paper bars from Wood Tube.
