There are several products that have been used for the control of Sitophilus oryzae L. However, the high resistance of the insect to various chemical products has motivated the search for new alternatives for its control, which led to evaluating the in vitro effect of the extracts from Pimenta dioica (L.) Merr, Callistemon citrinus (Curtis) Skeels and Syzygium malaccense (L.) Merr. & L.M. Perry on S. oryzae. The plant material was ground into particles smaller than 1 mm. The powder obtained was used to obtain extracts through three extraction methods (Soxhlet, assisted extraction with Ultrasound and Maceration), with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol solvents. The yield of the extracts was determined and the biological action on S. oryzae was evaluated by means of the percentage of insect emergency mortality and weight loss. The extracts formed by Soxhlet and n-hexane were more effective in vitro on S. oryzae, but all showed high repellency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The efficacy of Diatomaceous Earth (Protect IT ®) was tested for the control of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in a metallic silo of Matanzas province, Cuba. A random design was arranged and three groups were evaluated: Protect IT (90% of diatomaceous earth), a positive control (Actellic CE 50) and an untreated control. The diatomaceous earth and Actellic were evaluated at 9.0 kg PC. ton - 1 and 12.0 ml. ton - 1, respectively. The dose of Diatomaceous Earth tested showed insecticide activity with 100% mortality percentage during the first 60 days, without statistical differences with the Actellic insecticide. After three months, the insect mortality was 60%, with statistical differences with the chemical insecticide. The results suggest the potentialities of Diatomaceous Earth (Protect IT ®) as an alternative for management of S. zeamais in metallic silos and for reducing the use of chemicals in corn grain storage. With the objective to determine the effect exerted by vegetable powders of Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl) A. Gray, Moringa oleifera (Lam) y Piper auritum Kunth on Sitophilus oryzae L., this experiment was performed. In the execution, adult insects were taken to evaluate the increase of them. Petri dishes of 9 cm with 10 insects were used inside additionally 5 g of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and 0.4 g of powder was added botanical species (T. diversifolia, M. oleifera, P. auritum previously dried at 40 °C for 72 hours and finely ground). At 40 days the test mounted, the number of insects present per plate was counted, and after testing, Z Multiple Comparison was performed using the software Stadistix. To know the behavior of Sitophilus oryzae L. (Coleoptera; Curculionidae) in several stored grains species, the adults of this species coming from a laboratory rearing in the Center of Agricultural Investigations were placed, with several seeds of stored grains. The seeds was Oryza sativa, Lens culinaris, Canavalia ensiformis, Zea mays, Pisum sativum and Cicer arietinum. The increment of the population of the insect was observed on the seeds of each one of the species. S. oryzae reached a populational increment of 4.72 and 3.46 times it has more than enough corn and the rice respectively, on the pea the increment was of 2.74 times. S. oryzae didn't show a similar reproduction in canavalia and black common bean and he/she didn't reproduce in bay common bean, not being this last host of this insect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To know the preference of Sitophilus oryzae L. (Coleoptera; Curculionidae) for different species of stored grains, the adults of these species were placed, coming from a laboratory breeding in the Center of Agricultural Investigations, in two variants, individually and in groups, in front of different grains of Oryza sativa, Lens culinaris, Canavalia ensiformis, Zea mays, Pisum sativum and Cicer arietinum. The preference of the insect was observed in time on the same ones in each one of the species. Sitophilus oryzae L. prefers in both sexes, the rice before other grains like food and it didn't show preferences for the bean. The behavior grupal of the insect showed a preference marked by the rice followed by the corn, lentil and pisum. To know the preference of Zabrotes subfasciatus Boheman (Coleoptera; Bruchidae) for different species of stored grains was studied. The insects were collected in their adult state of the species Z. subfasciatus, and after the period of quarantine they were placed in two variants, individually and in groups, in Phaseolus vulgaris, Lens culinaris, Canavalia ensiformis and Zea mays grains. Was observed and counted the time on the same ones and the average of eggs in each one of the species. The females preferred grains of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to put egg. The group behavior was shown a preference by the common bean. The biggest average quantity of on eggs was in the seeds of common bean of the black color, followed by the red and beige with 11,0; 5,00 and 4,61 eggs, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, is considered one of the most important pests of stored grains. Plant powders from nine seasoning spices were tested in the laboratory to control S. zeamais at 0.5, 1, 2 and 4% (w/w). The variables evaluated were mortality and emergence (F1) of adult insects, grain weight loss and grain germination. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replicates, and the group of treatments was repeated three times. The highest mortality percentages were obtained with Piper nigrum L. at 1% (83.4%), 2% (97.6%) and 4% (100%). The lowest adult insect emergence was obtained with the same treatments more Capsicum annuum var. longum Sendtn., Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume and Pimpinella anisum L. at 4% (w/w). No significant differences were recorded as regard grain weight loss and germination. All the plant powders tested had a repellent effect on Sitophilus zeamais and no fumigant effect was recorded.
