Objective: To describe epidemiological characteristics, as well as maternal deaths registration characteristics in the population registered in a subsidized healthcare service provider in the state of Cauca (Colombia). Methodology: Descriptive, retrospective study. Univariate analysis was performed for the characterization of deaths, a mapping of their spatial location, and a graphical presentation of the number of deaths per year. Bivariate analysis with the Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal-Wallis test was also implemented. The concordance in records was assessed using Cohen's Kappa coefficient. Results: There were 34 maternal deaths between 2009 and 2014, with a rate of maternal mortality of 193, 141, 231, 67 and 110 deaths per 100,000 live births for the period from 2010 to 2014. The incidents occurred in women who mostly resided in scattered rural areas (67.6%), had a low level of education (63.3%), were housewives (73.5%) and did not attend antenatal care or did it lately (67.7%). Poor concordance was identified between institutional documents and reports to the Colombian Public Health Surveillance System (K = -0.0282, p = 0.8116). Conclusions: The maternal deaths compiled from the entity information system during the study and which had a profile linked to risky conditions were, in most cases, preventable. Although the entity used a strategy to identify delays in three aspects of each maternal mortality case, this assessment is to be completed for all events, accompanied by complete records to facilitate follow-up processes. Objective. Evaluate the degree of integrity of the Cuban statistical registry of maternal deaths and the quality of the classification of the causes of death included in that registry. Methods. We analyzed the information of all Cuban women who died in fertile age in 2013 according to the continuous mortality registry of the Directorate of Medical Records and Health Statistics of the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba (MINSAP), regardless of the main cause of death informed. Four research groups (national, expert, provincial and health units), each with defined functions, applied four forms to establish if the women had been pregnant in the year prior to death, to reassess whether the cases corresponded to a maternal death and, in that case, to review the classification. Results. Deaths of 2 731 women of reproductive age notified in Cuba in 2013 were assessed. Of them, the cause of death of 2 711 (99.3%) was conclusive and, of these, 97 (3.6%) had had a pregnancy in the year prior to death. We found 50 maternal deaths (one more than in the continuous registry) for a 2% error and an adjustment factor of 1.02. Of the 97 deaths studied, only 4 cases were reclassified: 2 maternal deaths and 1 death related to pregnancy, delivery and puerperium, according to the continuous registry, which were reclassified as direct deaths; and 1 death considered non- maternal by the continuous registry that was reclassified as late maternal death, for a 95.9% concordance. Conclusions. The information on maternal deaths included in the MINSAP's continuous mortality registry has a high level of integrity. In Cuba, maternal and child health care is based on the priority granted by the State, the implementation of the National Maternal and Child Health Program and the guarantee of equitable access to health services. This article describes the Cuban experience in this field, as well as its main achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. Among the most relevant results up to 2015 are the reduction of infant mortality rate and under-five mortality rate to 4.3 and 5.7 deaths per 1 000 live births, respectively; 5-year survival of 99.4%; more than 10 prenatal check-ups per delivery; 5.3% of low birth weight; 99.9% of institutional births; and being the first country to validate the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS and congenital syphilis. The main challenges are to increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding; to reduce anemia due to iron deficiency in children and pregnant women; to reduce overweight in children; to prevent accidents; and to reduce maternal mortality, adolescent fertility rate, and voluntary abortion. Among the lessons learned are the priority given by the State to health, the programmatic management of maternal and child care, the guarantee of universal coverage, the systematic collection of information for decision-making, the integration of sectors and social participation in health. Objective: To describe the behavior of extreme maternal morbidity in 2014 in the department of Meta, Colombia. Materials and Methods: A retrospective descriptive study with a quantitative approach with extreme morbidity reports of the department of Meta during 2014 was carried out. Results: A total of 353 cases of extreme maternal morbidity were reported during 2014 compared to 194 cases reported in 2013, with an average age of 25.2 years. A 99.43% of patients were hospitalized of which 38.24% were initially sent to higher level of complexity. The inclusion criteria were analyzed by specific disease being eclampsia the leading cause (22.38%), followed by hypovolemic shock. A 71.67% of pregnant women presented between one and two inclusion criteria for extreme maternal morbidity and the remaining 28% presented three or more inclusion criteria. Of the reported patients, a 13.59% had additional surgery (the most frequent was hysterectomy) followed by exploratory laparotomy. Grouped causes are primarily hypertensive disorders (55.24% of the cases), followed by bleeding complications (21.25% of the cases). Conclusions: Extreme maternal morbidity in Meta is a major cause of morbidity in women of childbearing age. It is necessary to continue strengthening its identification for timely handling, as well as strengthening the already existing strategies and programs in public health so that there is greater adherence to prenatal care. Objective. To analyze maternal deaths in Belo Horizonte from 2003 to 2010 based on the perception of family members of women who died from pregnancy-related causes. Methods. Maternal deaths were researched at the City of Belo Horizonte Department of Health's Maternal, Fetal, and Infant Death Prevention Committee. Family members of deceased women were recruited by telephone or personally. Sample size was not pre-defined; rather, a saturation criterion was employed. Nevertheless, an attempt was made to include families of women who received both public and private health care. The interviews focused on health history prior to the pregnancy; clinical history in the period from the start of pre-natal care until death; care received by the deceased women before, during and after delivery. After transcription and analysis of all interviews, the NVivo 9 qualitative analysis software was used to categorize and code the interviews. Results. The family members of 11 women were interviewed. The victims were between 16 and 40 years old, died of various causes, and had various occupations. Most were in their first or second pregnancy, and most relied on public health care. Seven women had between 8 and 11 years of schooling, and seven were single. Ten women were white or brown. All the family members interviewed were female, with age ranging from 18 to 66 years. Most were the mothers of the deceased women, had little schooling, were married and worked in the home. The interviewees reported difficulties with the care received during the pregnancy, with little attention paid to the clinical status of the pregnant women. Nine deaths occurred after the delivery. Conclusions. According to the reports of family members, the maternal deaths recorded in Belo Horizonte between 2003 and 2010 were associated with issues that were possibly preventable, relating to the reproductive rights of women, to pregnancy, delivery, and perinatal care. Objective: To determine the factors associated with users' satisfaction with prenatal care services in health public institutions in Cartagena. Materials and Methods: An analytical study was conducted with a sample of 712 low-risk pregnant women attended in 25 public institutions in Cartagena and selected through stratified sampling. The satisfaction survey for external users of ambulatory services in institutions providing health services, IPS, proposed and supported by the National Health Service Superintendence was used to collect information. In addition, odd ratios were calculated in order to estimate the relationship between the variables. Results: The average age of the 712 pregnant participants was 23 years (SD = 4.9 year), the highest proportion belonging to stratum 1 [53.7% (382)]. Eighty-four per cent (84%,598 patients) reported being satisfied with the service they received in the IPS where they were treated. These are factors associated with satisfaction, good treatment by nurses (OR = 48.204 - 95% CI = 14.943-155.501) and to the fact that they came from urban areas (OR = 8.954 - 95% CI = 5.251-15.267). Conclusion: The good perception of users in relation to the interaction with the professionals attending them is a determining factor to be satisfied and may favor their adhesion to prenatal care, independently from other factors related to the quality of health services. Objective: Identify and analyze publications that deal with the implications or consequences of maternal death in the family. Method: A systematic review of qualitative and quantitative research published in journals indexed by biomedical databases in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Results: Three of the seven publications included in the study use a qualitative method, two rely on a quantitative method, and two feature a quali-quantitative method, with provenances on the European and American continents. In total, 439 families of deceased women participated in the articles that were reviewed, and two historical reconstructions were done on the basis of family records of two populations. The dimensions of the consequences of maternal death are such that the impact on both the family and in the community lasts for a long time. In analyzing the findings, the authors found common problems such as grief, the survival of children and reconstruction of the household. Conclusions: Although not many studies have been done to identify and quantify the family consequences of maternal death and their analysis is restricted to a few qualitative studies, these consequences have a negative impact on family structure and dynamics, and contribute to an increase in child morbidity and mortality. Objective: To describe the maternal perinatal results of women using the high risk obstetric consultation, SES Hospital de Caldas, attended between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2011, establishing a comparison with the perinatal results of patients not considered at risk and discharged from consultation. Materials and Methods: A prospective, descriptive study. Hospital records were consulted for the final data collection obtaining telephone information from those patients who did not have labor and delivery in the city. Results: One hundred-eight consultation patients from which, 31 (28.18%) did not continue with the consultation because risk condition was eliminated. From the 77 pregnant women at risk, the average age was 29.1±7.8 years, with 13.15%, adolescent pregnancy frequencies, 28.94% late first time mothers, 31.6% were nulliparous, and 23.4% had a history of previous abortion. The most significant pathological history was: hypothyroidism, chronic hypertension, epilepsy, and preeclampsia-eclampsia. The most common reasons for referral were: previous cesarean, advanced maternal age, suspected fetal growth restriction. No differences were found in patients at low risk and high risk, with respect to age, pregnancy, educational level or procedence. increased frequencies of low birth weight, macrosomia, prematurity, cesarean delivery, neonatal ICU admission and perinatal death were found in at high risk patients. Conclusions: Referral criteria must be standardized for high risk obstetric consultation since 38.3% patients were discarded in the initial assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
