The book "Language and Politics. This article examines the ideological and cultural implicances of Rodolfo Lenz's folklorical investigations. Our premise is that, from the notion of archive, his interest in folklorical research functioned as a strategy to refund and modernice an idea of nation through positivist means. In a first phase, the philologist scrutinized these materials searching for an authentically Chilean kernel. Nevertheless, in a second stage, his innovations regarding language teaching made him relativize that approach and move to one based on folklores legitimacy. Our thesis is that from this point it is possible to draw a system for the national language, whose articulating space would be the school: this institution shapes a style of expression (derived from folklore) by establishing a dialogue, not without friction, between the popular language and the literary language. El segundo gobierno de Juan D. Perón (1952–1955) fue un período de confrontaciones entre diferentes proyectos político-culturales. En aquel contexto, los intentos del gobierno nacional de distanciarse del discurso hispanista –dominante en las instituciones estatales desde principios del siglo XX– para impulsar la producción de instrumentos lingüísticos propios generaron reacciones de rechazo, en particular de sectores ligados al catolicismo. Este artículo aborda una serie de notas publicadas en 1953 y 1954 por la revista católica Criterio, en las que se reivindica el legado hispánico, la norma literaria y la autoridad académica en materia idiomática. El análisis del corpus da cuenta del conjunto de representaciones y valores con los cuales se legitimó la posición expresada en Criterio, posición en la cual confluían la defensa de la unidad lingüística del español y concepciones prescriptivas ligadas a un proyecto social conservador y jerárquico. This article studies the relationships between the Argentinean Academy of Letters and the national government during the first period of Peronism (1946-1955). In order to achieve this purpose, we will analyse a corpus composed by different sort of texts --Academy's Bulletins, presidential discourses, government plans and parliamentary debates, inter alia-- considering two aspects: (a) language representations that express certain conceptions of national culture and identity; (b) ideas concerning the State and Peronism. Firstly, the article aims to expose some important transformations that emerged from the relationship between the Peronist government and the Argentinean Academy of Letters, including a short period of significant coincidences. Secondly, the study intends to show that the process the Academy went through is similar to the one experienced by other scientific, cultural and educational institutions during the first Peronism, process that implicated the expression of two opposed positions: on the one hand, the defense of cultural liberalism and, on the other, an interventionist project that involved language and culture.
