We present an ice-penetrating radar data set acquired over the Greenland ice sheet by aircraft during the years 1971, 1972, 1974, 1978, and 1979. The data set comprises over 177,000 km of flight lines and contains a wealth of information on the state of the Greenland ice sheet including information on ice thickness and englacial properties. During data collection in the 1970s, the data were recorded on optical film rolls and in this manuscript, we document the digitization of these film rolls and their associated geographical information. Our digitization of the data enables interaction with and analysis of the data and facilitates comparison with modern-day radar observations. The complete data set in full resolution is available at the Stanford Digital Repository (https://doi.org/10.25740/wm135gp2721) with the associated technical reports (Karlsson et al., 2023). Part of the data set has been quality checked and is available as low-resolution JPG files at The Technical University of Denmark's data repository, DTU Data, with associated geographical information (DOI pending). The present work contains several data obtained in the summer of 2017 about the hunting and processing of caribou (Rangifer tarandus) and seals (Phocidae) and the fishing of cod (Gadus morhua) in the Sisimiut area (West Greenland) by Inuit hunters and fishers. Data were collected through interviews, direct observation of hunting and fishing activities, prospecting and taphonomic analysis of the skeletal remains. The maintenance of traditional concepts of hunting, butchery, transport, distribution and consumption are still present among current Greenlanders. This article analyzes Greenland's relations, and specially its capital city Nuuk, with the diverse actors that intervene in its possible independence: indigenous communities, transnational companies, the states and world powers involved, and international organizations. To achieve this, the article uses a perspective from complexity theory according to Rosenau, taking the different statements from the variety of mentioned actors, to demonstrate that the road to Greenlandic independence is a very uncertain one. This demonstration will be achieved using a socioeconomic variable and a political one to give proper account of the complexity and contradictions of the independence promoted by Nuuk. Los microfósiles son una herramienta excepcional para hacer reconstrucciones climáticas y oceanográficas en sedimentos marinos debido a su alta abundancia, y a que muchos grupos permiten hacer estudios geoquímicos, especialmente los que presentan conchas de carbonato cálcico. En particular, las asociaciones de foraminíferos planctónicos han sido ampliamente utilizadas en ese sentido, ya que en el océano actual la distribución de las diferentes especies está íntimamente ligada a las condiciones climáticas y oceanográficas. La rápida respuesta de este grupo de microorganismos a los cambios climáticos nos permite utilizarlos para identificar eventos climáticos en un registro sedimentario y asociar esos eventos a sus equivalentes en registros de referencia bien datados. Esta práctica se conoce como eventoestratigrafía y nos permite obtener dataciones precisas y que pueden llegar a tener una resolución muy alta, por ejemplo, cuando se compara con los registros de los testigos de hielo de Groenlandia. Además, los análisis geoquímicos realizados en conchas de foraminíferos, como los isótopos de oxígeno (δ18O), también nos sirven para realizar eventoestratigrafía a diferentes escalas temporales. En este artículo, mostramos varios ejemplos de cómo se ha reconstruido el marco cronológico en secuencias sedimentarias marinas cercanas a la península ibérica a partir de abundancias relativas de foraminíferos planctónicos, paleotemperatura, o δ18O comparando los eventos climáticos del testigo de sedimento marino con los de un registro de referencia. Microfossils are an outstanding tool for climate and oceanographic reconstructions in marine sediment cores because of their high abundance in the sediments and because their tests allow us to perform geochemical studies, particularly those which are made of calcium carbonate. Given that planktonic foraminifer species' distribution in the modern ocean is intimately related to climate and oceanographic conditions, planktonic foraminifer assemblages have been widely used to reconstruct paleoclimate and paleoceanographic variability. The rapid response of this group of organisms to climate change brings the possibility of identifying climatic events in a sedimentary record and link them to the equivalent event in a reference record with good chronology. This technique is called event-stratigraphy and allows for precise and high-resolution dating of sedimentary records. This is the case, for instance, of event-stratigraphy using the ice-core records of Greenland as the reference record. Additionally, the geochemical analysis that we can perform in the foraminifer tests, such as the oxygen isotopes (d18O), can also be used for event-stratigraphy at different time scales. In this article, we show how the chronological framework of marine sedimentary records, located nearby the Iberian Peninsula, can be reconstructed comparing the climatic events recorded by the relative abundance of planktonic foraminifers, paleotemperature or d18O with a reference record.
