PSYCHOTHERAPY , *TELEPSYCHOLOGY , *COGNITIVE therapy , *SOCIAL skills , *DRUG abuse - Abstract
Drug abuse is a public health problem on the rise in Mexico. Thus, it is necessary to develop psychological treatments based on empirical evidence. The cognitive behavioral approach has shown to be effective for the management of substance use disorders. Likewise, developing other modalities of dissemination of treatments generates more alternatives for users. On the one hand, the group modality favors developing social skills and forming support networks. Telepsychology also facilitates access to psychological care services. The objective of the present investigation was to measure the effect of a group cognitive behavioral treatment carried out at a distance. Six video call sessions created a space for group members for asynchronous interaction. The changes measured included the pattern of daily consumption through self-recording, as well as symptoms of anxiety and depression. We used an intrasubject design with three participants to assess the impact on using alcohol, marijuana, and sedatives. Through five measurements: pre and post-treatment and three follow-ups, results showed a reduction in consumption with a medium effect in two cases and a significant effect in one. Total abstinence did not occur in any case but, a clinically significant reduction occurred regarding mood symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BODY mass index , *BODY composition , *MUSCLE mass , *ADIPOSE tissues , *COGNITIVE therapy , *WEIGHT loss , *MORBID obesity - Abstract
Introduction: clinical practice guidelines recommend considering pharmacological treatment of obesity only as a complement to lifestyle modification. Drugs alone are usually ineffective in the long term after discontinuation, so pharmacological weight loss strategies should always be accompanied by lifestyle modifications. Objective: to analyze the changes in weight, body mass index and body composition by means of electrical bioimpedance after a 32-week treatment with liraglutide in patients with obesity, associated or not with a food education program. Materials and methods: the study involved 68 patients who were randomly divided into 2 groups. One group received treatment with liraglutide 3.0 mg/day along with individual dietary education, and the other group was treated with liraglutide 3.0 mg/day and standard medical follow-up for 32 weeks. The data collected were weight (kg), height (m) (Seca® brand), body mass index (kg/m2) and body composition using multifrequency bioimpedance (SECA 112® brand). The variables were analyzed at the beginning and at the end of the treatment. Results: after 32 weeks of treatment, both study groups lost weight significantly. The group treated with liraglutide and individual dietary education had a reduction of 8.77 kg (9.08 %) (p < 0.001) and the group treated with liraglutide without education had a reduction of 3.55 kg (3.45 %) (p < 0.001). The BMI of the participants treated with liraglutide and education decreased by -4,04 kg/m2 (10.35 %) (p < 0.001) and in the group without education it decreased by -3.22 kg/m2 (8.30 %) (p = 0.003). In the educated group, fat mass decreased by -7.65 kg (15.89 %) (p < 0.001), although skeletal muscle mass also decreased by -1.62 kg (6.8 %) (p < 0.001). In those treated with liraglutide without education, a reduction in fat mass and skeletal muscle mass was also observed -- fat mass by -4.72 kg (9.43 %) (p < 0.001) and skeletal muscle mass by -0.17 kg (0.70 %) (p < 0.001). Differences were also observed between groups, observing a greater reduction in weight, BMI, fat mass and skeletal muscle mass in the group with liraglutide and education compared to the group without education, although these differences were not statistically significant. Conclusions: dietary education associated with liraglutide treatment may contribute to increasing weight and fat mass losses. However, it was also associated with an unwanted loss of skeletal muscle mass, probably related to the greater intensity of weight loss, which will have to be reversed in future therapeutic approaches. Habit modification through multidisciplinary treatment, including nutritional education, combined strength and resistance exercise, and cognitive-behavioral therapy, could be an effective way to treat obesity and maintain weight, body composition, and adherence to a lifestyle. ACCEPTANCE & commitment therapy , *COGNITIVE therapy , *PANIC attacks , *PSYCHOTHERAPY , *PANIC disorders , *PATIENT satisfaction - Abstract
Face-to-face and remote Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for adults with panic in Emergency Services: study of three cases. Most patients with panic attacks or panic disorder who seek emergency department care go unnoticed and do not receive appropriate treatment. Although firstline psychological treatments exist for these patients, they may be insensitive and inaccessible to their characteristics. The aim of this study was to describe three different brief protocols based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that were adapted for face-to-face or videoconferencing application for patients with panic attacks or panic disorder seeking care in emergency department. Three cases of adult patients, two diagnosed with panic disorder and one with panic attacks, are presented to show the implementation and outcomes of the protocols on diagnostic severity, anxiety sensitivity, quality of life, health services utilization, and patient satisfaction with the protocols. As well as the use of a panic screening diagram designed for the initial evaluation of these patients. After one to seven sessions, a decrease in panic disorder severity or frequency of panic attacks, and anxiety sensitivity was observed. Quality of life improved, patients stopped using emergency department and showed satisfaction with the intervention they received. Brief interventions based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, both face-to-face and remote, can be implemented in emergency department to overcome some barriers to mental health access and fit the diverse care possibilities of panic patientsinstrument in the field of acceptance and commitment therapy and other third generation interventions. Key words: cognitive behavioral therapy, panic disorder, panic attack, videoconferencing, emergency services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PSYCHOTHERAPY , *SLEEP quality , *COGNITIVE therapy , *BEHAVIOR therapy , *MENTAL depression , *ANXIETY disorders - Abstract
Depression and anxiety disorders are a worldwide problem reducing the quality of life of people suffering from them; the COVID-19 pandemic increased these symptoms, affecting specific populations. Behavioral Activation Therapy has evidence of its efficacy in these disorders. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a psychological treatment based on Behavioral Activation on anxiety and depressive symptoms and sleep quality in university students. The study used an intrasubject design with pre-post measurements and a one-month follow-up. The participants were four female university students with anxiety and depressive symptoms classified from moderate to severe and received a group intervention of nine sessions. The results analyses included calculating the size of the clinical effect of the variables studied using Cardiel's Objective Clinical Change Coefficient, concluding that the Behavioral Activation intervention was effective in reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms, increasing the quality of sleep, and maintaining the results at follow-up. Humor in psychology has generated abundant literature, highlighting its potential benefit in mental health. However, in Chile there is little theoretical-empirical research on this phenomenon in psychotherapeutic practice. This investigation is framed in the study of the use of humor by cognitive constructivist therapists, whose objective was to identify, describe and analyze the functions of humor and its effects in the psychotherapeutic process with adult patients. A descriptive qualitative methodology was used. The information was collected through semi-structured interviews with 12 therapists, seven women and five men, between eight and thirty-nine years of clinical experience in psychotherapy. Grounded Theory was used for the analysis, through open and axial coding. The results indicate that there is no single way of understanding humor in psychotherapy, that there are essential conditions for the use of humor in therapy, that there are specific purposes for its use and that its presence would generate effects in the therapist, the patient and the therapeutic relationship. A comprehensive proposal of the processes and relationships between the different elements resulting from this research is formulated, from the point of view of the cognitive constructivist therapist. Humor is considered as a constitutive part of human beings and, under certain conditions, it can be incorporated in psychotherapy as a mechanism of change in the systems of meaning of the subject’s experience, which allows contributing to the progress of the discipline. Introduction. Cognitive rehabilitation therapy [CRT] promises to be an effective alternative in substance use disorder (SUD) treatments. There is evidence of its use in the improvement of cognitive conditions deteriorated by consumption, greater adherence to treatment, increased abstinence rates and contributes to the restoration of lost executive functions. However, there is no knowledge about its impact on the individual's social and family reintegration. Objective: The present study seeks to identify the contributions of CRT in the treatment of addictions on the processes of social and family reintegration. Method: The EBSCOHOST, SCOPUS, SCIENCEDIRECT, APA &TAYLOR AND FRANCIS databases were used, and the systematized documentary review strategy was implemented; 44 articles met the inclusion criteria. Results: There is significant evidence on the effectiveness of CRT training as an improvement in self-control and social, emotional and cognitive skills that contribute positively to the person's functionality. Conclusions: CRT increases employability and helps in family understanding of SCT. It is considered then that CRT could generate a viable alternative in the treatment of SCT. Key words: Cognitive Rehabilitation, Social and Family Reinsertion, Addictions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pandemic generated by COVID-19 forced the governments of all countries to enter into quarantine, modifying the daily coexistence among family members. Objective: To evaluate manifest anxiety and quality of life in schoolchildren with ADHD during confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. Comparative, observational, non-experimental cross-sectional study of 105 schoolchildren with ADHD and 80 in the Control Group evaluated with the “Manifest Anxiety in Children Scale-Revised (CMAS-R)”. And the quality of life with the questionnaire (AUQUEI). The school children were diagnosed with ADHD in the Neurosciences Laboratory of the National Rehabilitation Institute, and treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to control their behavioral symptoms, before the Pandemic and were invited through the informed consent of their parents to participate in this research. Results. The CMAS-R questionnaire showed significant differences in its five dimensions between the groups with different ADHD subtypes and the control group. And the AUQUEI questionnaire showed differences in 4 of its 5 dimensions between schoolchildren with and control group 3 of 5 factors between the combined and hyperactive impulsive subtypes and control group and between the combined subtype and the hyperactive impulsive subtype. There were correlations between: Leisure, Physiological Anxiety, Total Quality of Life and Restlessness/Hypersensitivity; as well as between Separation, Achievement and Total Anxiety in the ADHD-Combined subtype and Control Group. Conclusions. An increase in anxiety indicators and a decrease in their quality of life were observed in schoolchildren with ADHD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mexico is in a state of epidemiological emergency due to the prevalence of Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM2). The increase in glucose levels and the complications from the disease highlight the need for the patient to modify their lifestyle. Implementing effective interventions in modifying behaviors and thoughts associated with lifestyle changes is essential. In order to measure the efficacy of a cognitive behavioral intervention to improve lifestyle and reduce cognitive distortions about the disease in patients with DM2, a pre-experimental study with pre-test and post-test of a single group was carried out. An increase resulted in a large effect size in the nutrition subscales, information on diabetes, therapeutic adherence, and the total lifestyle scale. Also, a substantial reduction occurred in the dichotomous thinking subscale and the total cognitive distortions of the Cognitive Distortions Questionnaire to Assess Cognitive Distortions by Lerma et al. In conclusion, results suggest that cognitive behavioral therapy is a valuable resource in changing lifestyles and thoughts in DM2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes adapting an online cognitive behavioral treatment for depression in a seven-year-old girl. It highlights the challenges of adapting an evidence-based intervention tested in clinical practice in a face-to-face setting for implementation via the Internet. The study presents a case illustrating the practical and technical aspects of implementing the intervention and demonstrates the feasibility of achieving successful outcomes by providing care via the Internet. Treatment was evaluated and implemented at the onset of social isolation due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The program helped to reduce depressive symptomatology, as well as its comorbidities (anxiety, attention deficit, and behavioral problems), in addition to improving two of three treatment goals. However, firm conclusions about treatment efficacy cannot be drawn until more rigorous methodological designs are available. The study identifies directions for future research. Background: In advanced stages of heart failure, the prevalence of depressive illness can exceed 50%, which is associated with a worse clinical state, also increasing medical care costs. Objective: To identify and synthesize the most effective non-pharmacological interventions for the treatment of depression in patients with heart failure. Method: Studies published up to September 2021 involving depression and hear failure were identified by reviewing main databases. Two authors independently carried out the selection of the literature found. Results: Cognitive behavioral therapy and exercise were the most commonly used non-pharmacological interventions for depressive symptoms in patients with heart failure, with moderate to large effect sizes (Cohen’s d between 0.5 and 3.4). Conclusion: In patients with heart failure, cognitive behavioral therapy and exercise were shown to be better than usual care for depressive symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ATTENTION-deficit hyperactivity disorder , *BEHAVIOR therapy , *PSYCHOTHERAPY , *COGNITIVE therapy , *CLINICAL trials - Abstract
Reference clinical practice guidelines coincide in pointing out Cognitive-. Behavioural Therapy as the first line of psychological treatment in child-adolescent with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of randomized clinical trials in order to explore the efficacy of CBT group in ADHD applied as a direct intervention in children and adolescents. A bibliographic search was carried out in the Scopus, WoS, Academic Research Premier, ProQuest, PsycInfo, Medline, E-Journals and Pubpsych databases, limiting the age range between 5 and 18 years. This was complemented with a manual search of relevant websites and a review of the reference lists of the included studies. The Revised Cochrane Risk-of-bias Tool for Randomized Trials (Rob 2) was used to assess the methodological quality of the selected clinical trials. The search identified four clinical trials that evaluated the efficacy of group Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to reduce the symptoms associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents. Only one study showed significant reductions in core symptoms of the disorder compared to the control group. The variability of the interventions and the scarcity of records found do not allow definitive conclusions to be drawn about the possible benefits derived, so more studies are required in this regard. Insomnia is a sleep disorder associated frequently with physical and emotional health problems. Evidence suggests that it is a recurrent problem in adults in the general population, identifying fewer hours of sleep and poor sleep quality. Objective. To analyze the association of insomnia symptoms and identify core symptoms in Peruvian adults from the general population. Method. The sample consisted of 351 adults (53% men) who responded to the Athens Insomnia Scale. A regularized partial correlation network model was estimated. Results. Sleep duration, overall quality, and sleep malaise for problems were the most central symptoms in the network. The strongest conditional associations emerged between duration and sleep quality, malaise for problems sleep and interference with daily functioning. The network structure was accurate and stable (CS = .749). Conclusions. Sleep duration, overall quality, and sleep malaise for problems are relevant symptoms for understanding insomnia in adults of general population. Addressing those symptoms from cognitive behavioral therapy could improve anticipated awakenings, sleep initiation difficulties and sleepiness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a significant lack of research and knowledge regarding sexual victimization in the early childhood or preschool developmental stage. The present review aims to offer a solid theoretical framework for professionals in the victimology field on the experiences of sexual victimization of boys and girls up to 6 years of age. The topics covered include the epidemiology of the problem, the characteristics of victimization, the consequences that the experience of victimization in the preschool stage implies for the victim, and intervention in early childhood. The studies included in the review allow us to conclude that sexual victimization of preschoolers is a more frequent problem than it is generally assumed, but one whose magnitude is truly unknown, with serious consequences for the victims. Intervention should concentrate on trauma focused cognitive-behavioral therapy since it has the most empirical evidence for this age group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Academic stress is a significant and frequent problem in higher education and it is a risk factor for multiple emotional and academic issues. The aims of this systematic review were to analyze the efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions implemented to reduce academic stress in university students, and to assess the risk of bias of the studies reviewed. From 19 databases, 27 studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected. Mindfulness programmes, cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoeducation and body-mind relaxation techniques, academic, social or coping skills training, alternative therapies, physical activity, self-help books and orientation in higher education were the interventions proposed. Most of the studies reviewed showed a decrease in academic stress after their interventions. However, in general, important methodological limitations and high or uncertain risk of bias were found, making it difficult to determine their real efficacy as well as the superiority of some interventions over others. Further studies nees to be carried out in order to overcome these limitations and be able to establish more consistent conclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The human being attends to external and internal stimuli, thoughts, emotions, and performance or inhibition of movement by activating neural networks, the dysfunction of which is manifested in several domains: electrophysiological, QEEG, test situation (visual, auditory, semantic), and natural behavior. In neurodevelopmental disorders of multifactorial etiology, such as Attention-DeficitHyperactivity (ADHD), with cardinal symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, the assessment of the three domains allows the provision of appropriate treatment. Objective: to illustrate in a child with ADHD the remission of inattention symptoms, in three domains, after the use of Play Attention and cognitive behavioral therapy. Case: 7.58 year old child of separated parents, in 2nd grade of primary school, intelligent quotient: 110, with predominantly hyperactive-impulsive ADHD, behavior disorder due to peers and authorities assault, who suffers from asthma, school aggression by peers and physical punishment at home as a disciplinary measure; with distorted thoughts of “failure, injustice and being a loser.” Results: QEEG with increased PA in the delta and theta bands and a frequency of 5 Hz in all areas except the occipital; the decrease of beta 3, high beta and frequency of 21 Hz in left Fronto-temporal-occipital; increased RT/B and to a lesser extent RT/A, alertness, and reactivity index; visual-attention-to-movement-inhibition; self- regulation-of-semantic-attention; aggression and distorted thoughts were significantly normalized after 40 sessions of 50 minutes every 15 days for 20 months of Play Attention and cognitive behavioral therapy. Hyperactivity as inattention to movement inhibition could be distinguished from motor behavior that was within normal limits. The treatment with Play Attention and cognitive behavioral therapy showed remission of ADHD symptoms in the QEEG, in test situations, and in natural behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COGNITIVE therapy , *PSYCHOTHERAPY patients , *THERAPEUTIC alliance , *PATIENT-professional relations , *SEMI-structured interviews - Abstract
It was intended to know the experience attributed to it by a group of patients who have been in computer-assisted cognitive-behavioral therapy in Medellín. The method was a qualitative study, whose main instrument was a semi-structured interview applied to eight computer-assisted cognitive behavioral psychotherapy patients. In the results, it is perceived that both the setting and the therapeutic alliance or relationship are maintained and stable throughout throughout the virtual therapy, as well as the effects and the fulfillment of the proposed objectives making the virtual therapy be seen effectively. However, there are elements that are considered a disadvantage, such as the lack of perception of non-verbal language, connectivity failures, little privacy in the patient’s spaces and environmental distractions. BIBLIOTHERAPY , *COGNITIVE therapy , *PSYCHOTHERAPY , *INFORMATION professionals , *ENGLISH language , *BIBLIOMETRICS , *FRAUD in science - Abstract
Bibliotherapy involves the therapeutic use of books and literature to facilitate the expression of feelings and coping skills. The purpose of this research was to analyze the scientific production on bibliotherapy, indexed in Scopus. A bibliometric study was carried out using quantitative methods to know the development of research related to bibliotherapy at a general level. A retrospective recovery of documents was carried out, without a temporality filter, identifying 1,289 records, in which the article predominates as the type of document and English as the language. The most cited author is Cuijpers, while the most prolific is John Pardeck; the most productive countries correspond to the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. Among the most preponderant keywords are: bibliotherapy, female, male, adult, rehabilitation, depression, cognitive therapy, psychotherapy, child and self-care. It is concluded that production has increased systematically during the 21st century, and its use as an auxiliary tool in the treatment of physical and psychological diseases has increased. On the other hand, although bibliotherapy is considered part of the work of librarians, there is not a large production of information professionals. Due to this, it is suggested to increase the research on bibliotherapy from the librarianship perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Briefly, this article presents the Unified Protocol for the Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders, a cognitive behavioral intervention of the third wave of Cognitive Behavioral Therapies. It aims to identify the maladaptive emotional regulation strategies that people use and train them in acquiring new and more adaptive ones. Composed of eight modules, it has bibliographical guidance material for the therapist and the patient. Through the eight modules of treatment people will be able to train five skills of emotional regulation: emotional awareness, cognitive flexibility, identification of emotional behaviors and proposal of alternative behaviors, interoceptive exposure and emotional exposure. It is an intervention whose effectiveness has been, and continues to be, proven in its multiple options and possibilities: as an individual or group intervention, face-to-face or online, in clinical or non-clinical contexts, either as a psychological intervention or as a health prevention strategy. Traditionally, non-cognitive values (political, class, religious, etc.) have been considered to negatively influence science. From feminism, gender biases and prejudices have been particularly criticized. However, people engaged in science are not isolated, but develop their activity in a specific sociohistorical context. As such, they may belong to different communities: the scientific, one in whose paradigm they have been educated, but also to other communities, like religious, political, etc. In this paper I show, with three examples, how belonging to one of these communities and their non-cognitive values (in this case socio-political ones such as feminists), can contribute to re-evaluate the available evidence and improve our hypotheses and theories, challenging old -- and new -- prejudices.
