Inflammation is a physiological defense mechanism that involves soluble factors, vascular changes, activation and migration of cells. Among the inflammatory mediators are prostaglandins (PGS), cytokines and nitric oxide (NO), among others. However, the same inflammatory process, that is effective in the elimination of the causative agent and in the remodeling of the tissue, can cause different pathologies in humans. Therefore, it is necessary to develop drugs that selectively inhibit inflammation, without interfering with the benefits of said response. The use of plants in traditional medicine suggests the possibility of finding natural compounds with anti-inflammatory activity. The anti-inflammatory effect of Phytolacca icosandra and Datura inoxia extracts on RAW 264.7 macrophages, stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), was evaluated. Cell viability was determined by sulforhodamine B (SRB), and the inhibitory effect on NO mediators by reaction of Griess and TNF-a and IL-6 (ELISA). Phytochemical monitoring was performed to identify secondary metabolites. Datura inoxia extract showed inhibitory effect on NO (70% at 30 µg/mL) without cytotoxic effect, whereas the extract of P. icosandra showed no effect on any of the mediators. The secondary metabolites present were alkaloids and terpenes from D. inoxia; sterols and alkaloids from P. icosandra. Possible anti-inflammatory effect of D. inoxia is verified.
