DIGITAL technology , *SEXISM in language , *POLITICAL participation , *SOCIAL networks , *DIGITAL communications , *GENDER stereotypes - Abstract
Introduction: Public media are essential to offer a service of general interest to the population to have equitable access to information, culture, democratic participation and equal opportunities. However, they continue to transmit biases and gender stereotypes that can have a great social scope, also in its digital editions, where a large part of the imbalances presents in traditional media have been transferred and adapted. Methodology: This paper analyzes the representation of gender on the Twitter profile of the regional channel Canal Sur Noticias. For this, a content analysis of a total of N=754 tweets published in September and October 2022 is carried out to find out if there is an underrepresentation of women in news coverage and if gender biases and stereotypes are perceived in the sections, spheres of action, authorship, external sources and in the audiovisual content. Results: The findings reveal that women are clearly underrepresented in this social network, not only as protagonist, also as authors and external sources, and a relegation to the background, in sections and areas of lesser weight, in addition biases persist and stereotypes such as gender markings, traditional roles, or sexist language in text and images. Discussion and Conclusions: This paper show an imbalance in the representation of gender in the Twitter of the public channel, which adapts the same biases present in its traditional format, hindering the social advancement of women in the digital space. The resurgence of anti-Semitism and other forms of racism and discrimination in Europe is an indicator of the growing political and social acceptance of these dangerous ideas. Muslims are also targets of extremist groups and traditional politicians, facing discriminatory practices and difficulties in obtaining employment or citizenship. Women are also victims of regressive laws and policies, with threats of violence and sexist hate speech. Additionally, human rights defenders and journalists face restrictions and retaliation in their work. Europe is caught in tensions and polarization, with growing indifference and even hostility towards human rights. The article addresses the trend of the new radical right in Europe and Latin America, as well as the far-right movements in the United States known as "Alt-Right". Erdogan's leadership in Turkey is also analyzed from a human rights perspective. The importance of human rights in the fight against inequality and poverty is highlighted, and the need to protect and promote the idea that human rights are universal and indivisible is mentioned. Furthermore, the importance of human rights education is emphasized, and politicians and media are urged to promote and defend human rights. Finally, the need for disciplinary measures against hate speech and participation in racist activities is mentioned. [Extracted from the article] more...

The research was carried out with a sample of 227 young university students between the ages of 18-30 at a Mexican public university in the center of the country; a questionnaire with fifteen questions and seven variables was sent; Subsequently, the most important variables were analyzed: use of university spaces for discussion of gender stereotypes, sexist language, gender stereotypes, division of domestic tasks, participation in gender and masculinity groups, reflection and personal evaluation over time and employment status. . The Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) software was used. The results showed that the most important variables to explain the recognition of the sex-gender system among university students were university spaces, sexist language, the division of domestic tasks and the condition labor in relation to equal opportunities. Other important variables, but not determinants, were participation in gender groups and reflection and personal evaluation over time. The access and use of the media, was not considered relevant according to the key actors; other important variables, but not determinants, were participation in gender groups and reflection and personal evaluation over time. Columns on language (CSL) are texts published periodically in the press through which expert knowledge about the language is transmitted. In this paper we focus specifically on the columns published in the Spanish press that deal with some aspect of women and language (CSLM). The objectives are to establish the different stages of the feminization of language through linguistic columnism, to determine which columnists write CSLM in each stage and which topics are recurrently dealt with in each of them. To do so, we follow the theoretical framework of Pragmatic Linguistics, with approaches and assumptions from Discourse Analysis. The corpus consists of 338 CSLM from 22 columnists. The analysis allowed us to distinguish three stages: 1. From the end of the 19th century to the end of the 1970s. 2. From the end of the seventies to the end of the twentieth century. 3. The 21st century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

This article addresses the issue of sexual harassment and harassment at the Autonomous University of Guerrero (UAGRO). It is evident that female students have been victims of sexual violence, ranging from misogynistic comments to attempted sexual abuse, both by fellow students and professors. The lack of training and the ineffectiveness of support protocols in universities to counteract this problem are highlighted. Additionally, the normalization of macho violence in the state of Guerrero and the issuance of a gender violence alert in several municipalities are mentioned. It is concluded that it is necessary to work on a culture of prevention and recognition of gender violence in universities, as well as to train authorities with a gender perspective. - Abstract

This article proposes a connective, performative, and creative interpretation of the Apocalypse of John from the perspective of the world's periphery. It is mentioned that the fundamentalist and conservative interpretation of the book sees it as a guide to future events, while the historical-critical exegesis interprets it in its historical context. It is emphasized that the Apocalypse presents a hermeneutical problem for contemporary Christianity due to its misogynistic language and its dualistic organization of the world, but it also has an ontology of connection between all forms of existence. It is concluded that the interpretation of the Apocalypse requires participation and action on the part of the readers, and it is proposed to reflect on its relationship with Amerindian cultures. - Abstract

GENDER , *TRANSLATING & interpreting , *SEXISM in language , *STEREOTYPES - Abstract
The United Nations have promoted the use of non-sexist (or gender-inclusive) language since the eighties, especially through UNESCO, as a tool to fight discrimination, lack of precision and the perpetuation of stereotypes. Institutional support has materialised in guidelines and practical tools for drafting texts but their application is not general nor applied to translation. Nevertheless, the transfer of texts from one language to another alters their gender, often involuntarily, and certain choices in the original could have positive or negative effects in terms of gender in translation, even if they do not entail differences in the original. The Sketch Engine online corpus management platform is used to locate semantic-gender elements in an open parallel United Nations corpus and to analyse the trend to keeping the original gender, with a view to assessing which options are more effective in terms of neutralisation of the translated text and which do not affect or promote masculinisation. The possible positive effects of the use of non-sexist drafting techniques in the source language towards the target language could be considered when drafting guidelines for translating and drafting in translation-prone languages, with special emphasis on the tools that have been tested to suppress gender traits in the target text. The article presents two manuals on inclusive language: the "Antimanual de la lengua española. Para un lenguaje no sexista" (Antimanual of the Spanish language. For a non-sexist language) and the "Manual de lenguaje inclusivo" (Inclusive language manual). Both manuals seek to promote inclusion and combat discrimination through language. The first one focuses on the inclusion of women in written language, challenging usual conventions. The second manual addresses sex-gender diversity and proposes concepts related to non-binary identities. It also mentions a third manual that addresses ethnic discrimination and proposes inclusive expressions for indigenous peoples. These manuals seek to make gender and sex dissidences visible. SEXISM in language , *GENDER , *SEX discrimination , *COLLEGE students , *COLLEGE teaching , *COLLEGE environment - Abstract
Previous research shows that using gender-sensitive language helps to build a more inclusive reality, while using sexist language helps to reinforce a patriarchal society. The aim of this study is to identify the factors and variables that regulate the use of inclusive language in university teaching. Using a survey methodology, with an instrument designed and validated for this purpose (PLIPerception of Inclusive Language), the degree of importance that students give to inclusive language, the resistance for its use, and the most common sexist manifestations in everyday expressions were analyzed. The sample (n = 943) was composed mainly of students from the universities of Malaga and Seville. The results show, among other issues, a widespread use of the generic masculine. Female university student, in general, regardless of the branch of their degree, are more aware of the sexist uses of language. Other multivariate analyzes show differential results according to discipline and gender. The conclusions illustrate the panorama of the prevailing language in the university environment. The University, due to its educational and socializing function, is a central space for action and should be a benchmark in the use of inclusive language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

The current study analyses the speech of the five most important political parties in Spain, Mariano Rajoy who belongs to Partido Popular, Pedro Sánchez to PSOE, Albert Rivera to Ciudadanos, Pablo Iglesias to Podemos and Alberto Garzón to Izquierda Unida, before and after the elections which took place on December the 20th in 2015 according to six handbooks about how to use proper non-sexist language. The aim of this study is to test whether politicians adapt their speech according to non-sexist language and whether these speeches vary according to formal and informal situations and the moment in which the speeches took place, that is, before or after the elections. The pre-electoral speeches are obtained from two tv programmes and the post-electoral speeches are obtained from the Parliament. Once all the speeches have been analysed, they are compared to confirm when non-sexist language is used, and which politicians use non-sexist language. Regarding the results, Mariano Rajoy and Pedro Sánchez use non-sexist language depending on the context and the situation within the elections whereas Albert Rivera and Pablo Iglesias do not use non-sexist language. However, Alberto Garzón uses non-sexist language in formal and informal context and before and after the elections. Therefore, we come to the conclusion that Alberto Garzón is the politician who uses non-sexist language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

Sexist language hides women using the male grammatical gender to name them, as if this gender were able to represent them. Feminism In Spain has managed to question and change the uses of sexist language In all areas in the last forty years. The change has taken place due to women's awareness, because of their decision to name themselves and name the world as feminine with a voice of their own, for their persistence in remembering that language belongs to those who speak it, that is, that language also belongs to women. The new proposals of the so-called Inclusive language, with the appearance of being inspired by good intentions and political correctness, once again hide women because they erases the feminine sexual difference. The aim of this article is to reflect on linguistic sexism, a kind of discrimination that has women as an object and language as an instrument. Sexist language either ignores women, or treats them as men, or represents them as an exception; such a use of language, which excludes or minimizes some social subjects, linguistically represents their self-denial and contributes to the permanence of common prejudices. The article analyzes two aspects of linguistic sexism: some asymmetries between masculine gender and feminine gender in the Spanish language; as well as some discriminatory linguistic expressions found in academic documents in the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico that hide or diminish the professional or student image of woman. The author identifies current lexicon used by ninth graders from the Instituto de Educación Integral, Las Nubes, Coronado, Costa Rica, during the 2009 academic period that refer to homosexuals. The purpose is to determine the frequency of usage, communicative situations, and semantic nature of these words according to the constructivist conceptualization of this closed social grid (adolescents). From this data, the ideological level of acceptance and rejection of these young people towards the homosexual community in general will be analyzed. Finally, criteria and recommendations will be given to teachers for use and discussion about the implementation of these words in the classroom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

This paper is a reflection about the discrimination we exert through language in different cultures. Most of the time, we do not realise of that situation because many of these linguistic facts seem to be normal for us due to, among many other reasons, the acceptance of the grammar rules. There are some references to the differences of usage of daily words and their connotations, and some suggestions are given in order to change the usage of certain structures to make language more inclusive. Finally, there is an invitation to think over the possibility of change of attitude to finish with such expressions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...
