The objective of the study is to establish the relationship and incidence of burnout syndrome and emotional climate in prison professionals, while determining the influence that the emotional climate and burnout factors have on each of the burnout variables according to two ways of understanding the prison. The sample is composed of 222 professionals from different Spanish prisons that are carrying out their activities under two different prison models: Therapeutic and Educational Unit (UTE) and traditional module (No UTE). Results show significant differences between the two models whith regard to both the emotional climate - a higher prevalence of positive emotional climate in UTE-and the characteristics of each of the burnout factors assessed in the model, as well as the role played in the emergence of the latter. Burnout Syndrome is defined as a psychological condition of exhaustion at the personal, professional cynicism and inefficiency that can occur in professionals working directly with humans, while the opposite construct, the Engagement is a condition characterized by vigor, dedication and absorption. The above variables were explored in 180 professional, all of them, collaborators of Costa Rican prison system. The technique of data collection was the survey and sampling of convenience. The results of a questionnaire of 49 questions, indicated the presence of a low level of Burnout (n=10) and a high level of Engagement (n=170), an average of 42,04 hours worked per week and an average of 8,59 hours a week devoted to recreation. In addition, 44,4% of the participants would be willing to change jobs. We conclude a statistically significant negative relationship between Burnout and Engagement, together with adequate reliable measurement of the variables, also you should prioritize the investigation of variables with Burnout, recreation and leisure use. The present article describes problems in the personnel of safekeeping and the presented/displayed monitoring of the Colombian Penitentiary Institute in the interval from 2000 to 2005. 378 cases were observed that report incidence of homicide, suicide, accidentally and use of psychoactive substances. All these circumstances require a scientific explanation of the phenomenon and represent a social and institutional challenge to come up and to take part in the mental health of the penitentiary guardians. One concludes that problematic the most frequent ones are the associates with death and hurt and who the most vulnerable rank of the population are the private first classes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
