This paper offers an updated description of the pottery of La Chamba, Tolima, and its purpose is to privilege the conceptual point of view of the artisans and the imponderable events of the entire creation process with clay. It intends to show, rather than argue, that working with clay is a craft whose wisdom lies in the submission to the properties and possibilities of clay and other materials involved through a methodical, sensitive and plastic knowledge, like the clay itself. An exploration of this is offered based on the notion of test and point. This paper is the result of a stay of more than four months in the village, guided by a methodological orientation that can be called participant observation, consisting of being an apprentice of the craft and joining the life of the potters. The results of compositional studies of paints and slips applied on archaeological ceramics of different styles recovered at Punta de la Peña, Peñas Coloradas and Paicuqui, archaeological sites of Antofagasta de la Sierra microrregion (Catamarca Province, Argentina), are presented and discussed. The variability of minerals used in local, as well as, in foreign pieces is evaluated. Furthermore, pigment deposits of diverse colors and also evidences of pigment processing were found. These materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Raman microspectroscopy and their possible application in the fabrication of the studied ceramics is discussed. This information may contribute to the knowledge of the local pottery production, circulation ways and use, and of the elaboration techniques developed in this region during the chronological range ca. 1000-1500 AD. Also, may serve as the start of an empirical reference database of raw materials sources, which are scarcely registered in Argentine Northwest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From an archaeological perspective, the practice of pottery making can be studied from different theoretical and analytical perspectives on the stages of pottery production. In this paper, we present the results obtained through technological analysis of prehispanic pottery from the Costa de Reyes N° 5 archaeological site (Tinogasta, Catamarca). The main goal of this analysis is to explore the pottery-making practices developed by ancient potters during the Late Period and through the arrival of Incas at the southern sector of Abaucán Valley. Our methodology consisted of the reconstruction of typical ceramic forms, the use of a stereoscopic microscope to study fresh transversal cuts, and thin-section analyses by ceramic petrography, carried out on pottery samples recovered from both surface collection and excavations in two structures at Costa de Reyes N° 5. Through this approach, we are able to explore and visualize continuities and ruptures in both the pottery-making practices and paste recipes during the Late Period (ca. 900-1450 aC), and how pottery-making was reconfigured when the Inca (ca. 1480-1532 aC) arrived in the region. While pottery production during the Late Period is characterized by technological variability and heterogeneous ceramic pastes, during Inca times there was a homogenization of the recipes used by ancient potters. Archaeological evidence documented in the Palpa valleys indicates that at the end of the Formative period, between the decline of the Paracas and the beginning of the Nasca, there was transition period in which important changes took place in the sociocultural process that affected the apparent links of continuity between both sociopolitical entities. This time period, known as Proto-Nasca or Initial Nasca in the Rio Grande basin, is closely related to the sudden appearance of elements related with the Topará, a social group which seems to have exercised political and religious control of the southern coast at the end of the Formative period, configuring a new scenario in which typical traits of the Paracas and Nasca were combined. In this sense, the discussion focuses on the implications of the Topará had in this transition process, in which only the so-called «Paracas» textiles of the Necrópolis phase represent the ties of continuity between both sociopolitical entities. This continuity evidently had strong religious and ideological connotations. In this paper the archaeological evidences (settlement patterns, geoglyphs, petroglyphs, pottery, etc.) that set this new stage in the valleys of Palpa will be presented, on the basis of which we discuss the characteristics that the Paracas-Nasca transition had in the Río Grande basin and its implications in the regional context. This work discusses the "gender-environmental behavior" relationship in 137 clay handicrafts businesses in Oaxaca, Puebla and Tlaxcala under the suppositions of Gender Political Ecology (EPG), where innovation, as a change for improving the environment, intervenes in the "gender-environmental behavior" relationship and ethnicity, age, schooling, type of organization and civil status are moderator variables. It used a Pearson correlation for establishing zero order relationships and a partial correlation to determine the effect of the intervening variables and moderators. With a multiple regression a model was developed to determine the environmental behavior of the business and its owners. It was found that the variables that explain the environmental behavior of the business are: gender, schooling, type of organization and product innovation, and the environmental behavior of the owners of business is explained by schooling, product innovation and innovation in established relationships. The article discusses the pottery trade in Tlayacapan in the state of Morelos, Mexico. In particular, it studies social factors, including how changes in the role of agriculture at the household level, the privatization of land, and an increase in outside employment opportunities have impacted the trade. It also looks at how changes in the way pottery is done in Tlayacapan have come about as a result of the emergence of decorative figures as a form of ceramics. The article explains that younger potters tend to embrace the production of these ornamental pieces, while older potters continue to produce the housewares that have traditionally been more typical of the trade in Tlayacapan.

This paper presents a typology of Portuguese ceramics from Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. The typology is based on the analysis of a ceramic assemblage from excavations at Colonia del Sacramento, a Portuguese settlement founded in 1680. This settlement initiated new forms of trade along the Rio de Ia Plata. As a result of this interaction this peripheral area lost its marginal position and took on a leading commercial role. In this study I establish the chronology and provenience of the ceramics. In addition, I will address Portuguese relationship with European nations, as well as with Portuguese settlements throughout the world during the XVII century. In this sense, ceramics are the link between different Portuguese settlements. The ceramics are analyzed in conjunction with other archaeological remains, as indicators of trade from Colonia del Sacramento to the South America hinterland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
