Objective: the aim of our study was to assess the effect of bariatric surgery on obstetric outcomes. Material and methods: a retrospective cohort study was conducted, including 54 pregnancies post-bariatric surgery and 219 pregnancies in non-operated obese women, from December 2018 to January 2023. Various maternal and obstetric characteristics were evaluated, ranging from baseline data to antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and neonatal outcomes. Results: bariatric surgery showed a significant 69 % reduction in the risk of gestational diabetes (GDM) (p = 0.045) and a 63.1 % reduction in cesarean sections p = 0.014), but also a notable increase in the risk of miscarriage (3.5 times more, p = 0.046) and intrauterine growth restriction (35 times more, p = 0.009). Bariatric surgery was associated with a significant prolongation of postpartum hospital stay (7.5 times more, p = 0.001) and a decrease in the average weight of the newborn (213.71 g, p = 0.006). Conclusion: pregnancy after bariatric surgery presents benefits, such as a reduced risk of gestational diabetes (GDM) and cesarean section, but also presents challenges, such as an increased risk of miscarriage and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). These results highlight the importance of specialized obstetric care to optimize maternal-fetal outcomes in pregnant women with a history of bariatric surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Being overweight and obese have been frequently observed in women with infertility, which is a constant in more than 20 Latin American countries. Several studies propose that stress is essential for modifying body weight since it causes an increased food intake. In the investigation, 250 infertile women were evaluated and associated with the Body Mass Index (BMI). 80.4% of the participants were overweight or obese without sig-nificant stress levels. The regular BMI group has a higher risk in the healthcare subscales than overweight and obese women. Traditional clinical psychology can change social representations of overweight or obese women; they can become aware of risk factors and emphasize health care for women with infertility who present risks to their health. Introduction: Obesity continues to be one of the biggest public health problems worldwide. It is known to be associated with a wide variety of diseases; in obese women, the ideal way to carry out an adequate physical prescription is still unknown. Objective: to review the types of physical training in randomized controlled trials published in the PubMed database between 2015 and 2022 on changes in body composition in adult women aged 18 to 65 with obesity. Methodology: the "Validated Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies" was used as a filter. Outcomes: the search yielded 586 articles, of which 93.85% were eliminated; 6.14% went through a filter that left a total of 1.7%. Introduction: 30 % of the world population currently has overweight and obesity problems, while in Ecuador this is 64.68 %. The identification of population groups more vulnerable to overweight and obesity is a basic issue to establish better public policies. Objective: to identify the population groups at risk of overweight and obesity according to socio-demographic determinants (ethnicity, marital status, poverty and age). Methods: a cross-sectional study. Data from 89,212 adults of both sexes were analyzed. Body mass index (BMI) was used to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity, and multiple linear regression analysis was performed to relate BMI to sociodemographic determinants. Results: women had an average of 1.03 kg/m2 more than men, and BMI rose by 0.04 kg/m2 for each year of age. In relation to marital status, married people presented 1.14 kg/m2 more than single people. Taking into account the poverty quintiles and q1 as a reference category, quintiles 2, 3 and 4 showed a higher BMI of 0.65, 0.88, 0.77 and 0.41 kg/m2, respectively (p < 0.001). Regarding ethnicity, indigenous people had a BMI 0.78 kg/m2 less than whites; Montubios and Afro-Americans had 0.37 and 0.61 kg/m2, respectively, more than whites. People residing in the urban area present 0.41 kg/m2 more than the residents in the rural area. Conclusions: we identified groups of higher nutritional risk such as women and married people for overweight and obesity, while indigenous people and the poorest people were at risk for low weight, which indicates that in Ecuador adults have problems of both excess and deficit. Obesity is a global, public health problem. Considered a systemic, multiorgan, metabolic and chronic inflammatory disease, with an excess of subcutaneous adipose tissue, which carries a greater risk of morbidity and mortality due to life cycles. To determine the general obesity trends according to demographic variables in Ecuador in the period 2014 - 2016. Population study, with 318,594 subjects diagnosed with general obesity. 77.2 % represented by women. The data were provided by the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador according to province (n = 24), regions (Coast, Sierra, Amazon, and Insular), age groups (under 15, 15 to 19, 20 to 64, and over 65) and sex. Statistical analyzes of frequencies, percentage, incidence rate per 1.000 inhabitants, incidence rate ratio per year, in the total population, by sex and age group were performed. Microsoft Excel 16.44 software was used. Considering 95 % confidence intervals. In the period studied, the general obesity rate per 1.000 inhabitants was 6,5, being 3 times higher in women than in men. In 2016, the highest obesity incidence rates were reported, (6,38 per 1000 inhabitants). In addition, there is an obesity rate 2,38 times higher in the Insular region than in the Coast (95 % CI; 2.14-2.65). The data found are important, since it is the first study where these figures were analyzed, so it is relevant to consider them when carrying out disease prevention and health promotion. Introduction: Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) is a serious complication of acute pancreatitis. Case report: We present the case of a 54-year-old obese woman, a smoker and with severe scoliosis, who underwent a scheduled intervention for incisional hernia with retraction of the wall. We performed anterior separation of components and placement of interfascial polypropylene mesh. During the postoperative period, she presented severe acute pancreatitis, which required urgent surgical decompression and laparostomy. Finally, the abdominal wall was successfully repaired with a biological replacement mesh to achieve a complete closure without tension. Conclusion: A high index of suspicion for the detection of complications, urgent surgical decompression leaving a laparostomy with a vaccum system, and defi nitive delayed closure are key points to keep in mind if we are facing an ACS after surgery on the abdominal wall. Systematic physical activity is the cornerstone against disease. University teachers due to multiple responsibilities and living in confinement are prone to developing stress and being overweight. The objective of the research is to determine the relationship between physical activity, stress and body mass index in university teachers in a pandemic. The type of research is basic, with a multiple correlational descriptive design with a population of 1150 teachers and a probabilistic sample of 234 teachers (150 men and 84 women) with an average age of 49.70 ± 10.01, the instruments used are questionnaires of physical activity, stress and the report of their anthropometric measurements (height and weight). Results 58.86% of men present low physical activity, compared to women 41.14%, 91.95% show stress due to work pressure, men have a greater tendency to be overweight 67.59%, compared to women 32.41% and obesity grade II 33.96 %. The relationship between the variables physical activity, stress and body mass index is determined with an inversely proportional Spearman Rho of -0.183 and -0.204. Accessible tourism, in Ecuador, has found a path for development thanks to modern legislation that guarantees the inclusion of priority care groups in all dimensions of daily life. The country takes into account current indicators regarding life expectancy, a fact that makes it possible to influence the need to innovate tourism products aimed at segments of people with disabilities, elderly, pregnant women and people with obesity problems (priority attention tourists). In the province of Tungurahua, according to the INEC projection for the year 2019, 584,114 inhabitants are estimated, of which 13,731 people have some type of disability. Several theoretical methods were used in the research such as: analysis and synthesis, inductive-deductive, structural systemic, and among the empirical ones: scientific observation, interview, document review, and specialist criteria. The profile of tourists with disabilities describes people with physical and intellectual disabilities, who are usually accompanied by family members when they carry out tourism-related activities. For for this reason, they become multi-clients and generate considerable additional revenue. These variables determine an opportunity to invest in the creation of tourism organizations with an accessible approach, which besides promoting the inclusion of priority attention tourists, contribute to boost the socio-economic development of the country. Introduction: Obesity has become a chronic disease which prevalence is increasing exponentially in countries developed. Pregnant women with a higher body mass 30 kg/m² index have higher risk of complications during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Maternal obesity has negative consequences for the fetus, increasing the prevalence of macrosomia, decreasing breastfeeding and increased the risk of obesity childhood. Objective: The objective of this study is to determine if the prevalence of Childhood obesity is associated to weight gain during pregnancy and the breastfeeding stage. Methodology: The design of this study is retrospective descriptive. It has been done in the city of Granada (Spain) between the months of October 2014 and June 2015. The study estimated a universe of 500 children from 8 to 12 years with overweight. The sample consisted of 54 children, all of them with overweight or obesity. Results: For the study there were included 27 boys and 27 girls. The average age was 10.65 ± 1.38 years, with an average weight of 66.05 kilos and an average size of 150.75 cm, equivalent to a mean BMI of 28.60.The Mothers studied gained an average of 16.17 kg of weight during pregnancy and only 2.83 months of breastfeeding on average. Conclusion: The excess of weight during pregnancy and decreased breastfeeding are related to child obesity at the age of 10.The prevention of obesity in children and adolescents should be prevented from pregnancy. One way of prevention could be the weight control of the mothers during pregnancy. It is also important to support the first days of postpartum for the establishment of breastfeeding in women with obesity, due the fact that they delay the lactogenesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Breast cancer (BC) is considered a global public health problem, and is the most frequently type diagnosed in Mexican women. Therefore, it is important to study the risk factors associated to this neoplasia in order to establish prevention strategies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hormonal contraceptives and hormone therapy (HT) use and period of use, breastfeeding practice, abdominal obesity and weight gain in adulthood, on the risk of BC in adult women from Northwest Mexico. This was a case-control study that included 162 women (81 cases and 81 controls). A sociodemographic and health questionnaire, and a survey history of body weight were applied to participants. Measurements of body weight, height and waist circumference were performed. To assess the association between BC risk and exposing factors, a multivariate logistic regression model was used. Average age of cases and controls were 51.8 ± 11.7 and 51.4 ± 11.3 years, respectively. No significant association was found between the use and period of use of hormonal contraceptives and HT with the risk of BC. The practice of breastfeeding (OR=0.34, 95% Cl: 0.12- 0.92) and the time of exclusive breastfeeding (OR=0.64, 95%CI: 0.42-0.97; crude) were protective against the risk of BC. Abdominal obesity (OR=0.93, 95%CI: 0.90-0.97) and weight gain in early adulthood (OR=0.90, 95%CI: 0.85-0.95) were inversely associated to the risk of BC. El artículo discurre sobre una serie de estudios médicos de varios temas. Se examina el efecto de querecetina en la acumulación de grasa en adipocitos maduros. Se analiza la relación entre glutación peroxidasas 1-7 y la obesidad infantil. También se considera el efecto de la obesidad antes del embarazo en los mecanismos moleculares de transferencia de grasa al feto.

Objective. To describe the association of food insecurity (FI) and obesity in adults in Mexico. Materials and methods. Cross-sectional design. We included adults' data from the health and nutrition national survey 2012 (Ensanut 2012). Measures of weight and height were obtained and BMI was calculated. The level of household food insecurity was measured through the Latin American Scale of Food Security (ELCSA). Linear and logistic regression models were adjusted. Results. 70.6% of the population had some level of food insecurity, 42.6% mild insecurity, 17.7% moderate insecurity and 10.3% severe insecurity. Adults with mild FI had higher probability of obesity (OR: 1.66; 95%CI 1. 11-2.50). Women were slightly more likely to be obese (OR: 1.78; 95%CI 1.01-3.12). Conclusions. Somehow, the various demographic and social changes during the last decades, such as new types of families and their organization, the incorporation of women into the formal labor market and the social stratum established on the basis of family income, are changing the allocation of household tasks such as purchase, preparation, and consumption of food, factors that play a role in the prevalence of obesity in Mexico. This relationship between purchase, food preparation and the prevalence of obesity in Mexican women has greatly increased in the last two decades. This condition can be classified as a serious public health problem, and is associated with the onset of chronic diseases including cardiovascular problems. The object of this article is to describe the relation-ship between gestational diabetes and the lifestyle of women responsible for the household food process, as well as the structural change in family organization when women are occupationally involved with family expenses. Introduction: The determination of resting energy expenditure (REE) is calculated in clinical practices by predictive formulas; however the result varies among the population due to several factors. Objective: To compare the REE determination by indirect calorimetry and by Harris-Benedict (HB), Mifflin (MF), World Health Organization (WHO), Institute of Medicine (IOM), "Formula Rfipida" (FR) and Valencia (VA) formulas, in women with obesity grades I to III. Methods: Mexican mestizo adult women were included in the study and stratified in three groups according to their body mass index (BMI). Grade I obesity (BMI 30.0-34.9, n = 42), grade II (BMI 35.0-39.9, n = 38) and grade III (BMI > 40, n = 41). REE was determined by indirect calorimetry and by the aforementioned equations. Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA and Dunn's test were used for statistical comparison and p < 0.05 was accepted as a statistical difference. Results: There were no statistical difference between the REE values estimated by formulas HB, WHO and VA regarding the CI. The accuracy obtained from these formulas was 63%, 67% and 64%, respectively, when data were analyzed in a single group. The IOM, ER and MF formulas showed statistically significant difference versus the CI and their accuracy were 58%, 53%, and 54%, respectively. In grade III obesity VA (78 %) and FR (71%) accuracy were the highest obtained. Discussion: HB, WHO and VA formulas were the best to estimate REE in Mexican women with BMI > 30. Objective To determine which socio-demographic, anthropometric, ego functions, cognitive, affective, social and behavioral variables are associated and predict eating alteration. Methods A sample by quotas of Body Mass Index group: (50% overweight and obesity and 50% normal weight) was used. The questionnaires of Overeating and Ego Function Assessment were applied to a random sample of 20 to 40 years old women, resident in the city of Monterrey, Mexico (N=217). Results A model that takes as hypothesis overeating by affective alteration was contrasted. Affective alteration and greater age predict overeating; the last one leads to weight gain, to which the age also contributes. The affective alteration is predicted by ego functional deficiencies, primitive object relationships and higher education level. The weight gain generates corporal image preoccupation and motivation to lose weight (probably by physical and health problems). At the same time, the corporal image dissatisfaction, increased by affective alteration, motivates to lose weight. This model shows a good fit to the data (?2 [32, N=217]=38.14, p=.21, GFI=.97, AGFI=.94 y RMSEA=.03). Conclusions Ego function deficiencies lead to chronic problems of adaptation and relations, which generate affective alteration that is faced with self-indulgency in eating. The consequent weight gain increases the corporal dissatisfaction and the desire to lose weight. Diets and unresolved affective alterations can contribute in the future to an eating disorder. Introduction: Bariatric surgery allows a significant reduction in weight and improvement of comorbidities associated with obesity in the long term, but it can also adversely affect the nutritional status of some micronutrients. Objectives: To evaluate changes in intake and parameters of nutritional status of zinc, iron and copper in patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (GBP) or sleeve gastrectomy (SG), until the second postoperative year. Methods: We prospectively studied 45 women undergoing GBP or SG (mean age 35.2 ± 8.4 years, mean BMI 39.8 ± 4.0 kg/m2), every 6 months We measured intake and status indications nutritional zinc, iron and copper, and annually evaluated body composition. The contribution of minerals through supplements represented twice the recommended intake for a healthy woman in patients undergoing GT and three times for GBP. Results: 20 women underwent GBP and 25 SG. In both groups there was a significant reduction in weight and body fat percentage, which was maintained until the second postoperative year. Women who have had a greater commitment GBP nutritional status of zinc, iron and copper, that patients undergoing SG. Conclusions: Gastric bypass Roux-Y produces a greater commitment of nutritional status of zinc, iron and copper sleeve gastrectomy. Introduction: Few studies have evaluated the efficacy and reliability of weight loss-focused prepared food dishes in obese post-menopausal women. Objective: To compare the efficacy of a weight loss programme based on a balanced hypocaloric diet using prepared dishes* with that of a similar programme based on standard commercially available foods and with a non-intervened control group. A further aim was to evaluate the subjectivity of participants in the preparation of the diet-adjusted dishes based on usually consumed products. Subjects: Obese post-menopausal women aged between 55 and 65 years. Design: Controlled longitudinal interventional study. Method: The sample of 75 female volunteers were divided into three groups of 25 women: a control group, who continued to consume their usual non-dietary adjusted meals (CG), an intervened group, treated with a diet adjusted to their individual requirements and based on standard commercially available food (SG), and another intervened group, treated with a similarly adjusted diet but based on prepared dishes (PG). Data were gathered on anthropometric variables, consumption habits and physical activity levels, and clinical-nutritional controls were conducted at the start and every two weeks to the end of the 8-week study in order to evaluate biochemical changes. Results: The weight loss was slightly higher in the prepared-dishes group (PG) than in the standard food diet group (SG), but the difference was not statistically significant, whereas it was considerably higher in both groups than in the non-dietary adjusted control group (CG) and this difference was highly significant (losses of 7.60 kg in PG and 7.01 kg in SG versus 2.10 kg in CG (p < 0.01). However, the PG showed a significantly higher (p < 0.01) loss of fatty mass and abdominal circumference versus the SG women. Conclusion: More weight was lost by the two groups treated with a diet based on prepared dishes or usual food items in comparison to untreated controls, but the diet based on prepared dishes obtained more reliable and higher quality outcomes, achieving a positive change at fatty compartment level and in the abdominal circumference. Se presentan los resultados de un estudio sobre la prevención de la infertilidad. Se discurre sobre los métodos de prevención evaluados en la investigación, incluyendo la educación de las parejas y los proveedores de atención de la salud, la reducción de peso para las mujeres con obesidad antes de tratar de concebir y la evaluación de las adicciones, enfermedades de trasmisión sexual y aborto espontáneo.

Introduction: Bariatric surgery leads to a significant body weigh reduction although it is associated to a higher risk of presenting some nutritional deficiencies. A common complication, little studied and mainly related to zinc deficiency, is alopecia. Objectives: To compare the nutritional status of zinc, iron, copper, selenium and protein-visceral in women with different degrees of hair loss at 6 months after gastric bypass or tubular gastrectomy. Methods: The patients were categorized into two groups according to the degree of hair loss: group 1 or mild loss (n = 42) and group 2 or severe hair loss (n = 45). Zinc, iron, copper, and selenium, as well as the indicators of the nutritional status of zinc, iron, copper, and protein-visceral were assessed before and after 6 months of the surgery. Results: In both groups there was a significant body weight reduction at 6 months post-surgery (-38.9% ± 16.4%). Patients in group 1 presented a significantly higher intake of zinc (20.6 ± 8.1 vs. 17.1 ± 7.7 mg/d) and iron (39.7 ± 35.9 vs. 23.8 ± 213 mg/d.), and lower compromise in the nutritional status of zinc and iron than group 2. However, patients in group 2 had lower compromise in the nutritional status of copper. There were no differences regarding the plasma concentrations of albumin. Conclusions: The patients having lower hair loss at six months after surgery had higher zinc and iron intake and lower compromise of the nutritional status of both minerals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the hormonal and inflammatory status of a group of overweight/obese women. Patients and methods: The sample studied was a cross-sectional cohort of women > 18 years of age, BMI ≥ 25 < 40 kg/m², prior to starting a weight control program. Data collected were: demographic characteristics, blood pressure, anthropometric parameters, physical activity data, and biochemical, hormonal and inflammatory biomarkers. Results: The study involved 104 women with a mean age of 48.4 ± 9 years and a BMI of 29.8 ± 3.5 kg/m². Some 48% of the women studied were in menopause. Some 8.9% had hyperinsulinemia. The mean ghrelin value was 38.8 ± 33.6 pg/ml; there was no correlation between ghrelin levels and anthropometric and biochemical variables. CRP, leptin, adiponectin, resistin, IL6, ILIO, and PAI1 were 3.0 ± 2.7 mg/dl, 36.3 ± 19.5 ng/ml, 8.3 ± 4.5 mg/ml, 24.3 ± 23.2 ng/ml, 51.6 ± 93.6 pg/ml, 10.0 ± 34.2 pg/ml and 22.3 ± 30.6 ng/ml, respectively. Obese patients had significantly higher mean values of resistin and PAI 1 than those who were overweight. These levels correlated significantly with anthropometric and biochemical variables; however, the correlations were weak. Age, menopause or the regular practice of physical activity had no effect on mean values. Conclusions: The group of women studied had altered inflammatory biomarkers in relation to people of normal weight. The study shows the inflammatory status of overweight/obese individuals, and the values obtained may help to establish standard ranges for these markers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To describe the anthropometric profile and body composition of women from Southern Spain diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FM) and to compare the observed values with values from other studies conducted on FM patients and with national reference values. Materials and methods: The body composition of 104 women diagnosed with FM was assessed using an eight-electrode impedance meter. The reliability of the body composition measurement was tested in a randomly selected sub-sample (n=28). The reliability study showed a test-retest systematic error close to zero in most of the parameters studied. Results: The women with FM who were studied had a mean weight of 71.3 ± 13.4 kg, height of 158 ± 6cm, body mass index of 28.6 ±5.1 kg/m², body fat mass of 38.6 ±7.6%, total body water of 31.6 ±3.81 and muscle mass of 23.4 ±3.0 kg. In general, there were no substantial differences in weight and body mass index between women with FM and those analyzed in other Spanish and European studies involving FM patients, nor when they were compared with regional or national reference values. However, the prevalence of obesity in the women with FM under study was 33.7%, a higher figure than that from the national reference data for obesity in similarly aged women (i.e. 26,4%). Conclusions: The results suggest that obesity is a common condition in women diagnosed with FM, its prevalence in this population being higher than the national reference values. Introduction: The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma 2 (PPARγ2) is an adipogenic transcription factor that influences in insulin resistance (IR) in the presence of agonists such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Objective: Evaluate the influence of dietary fat in glicidic metabolism in morbidly obese women with Pro12Pro genotype in the gene PPARγ2. Methods: Were selected 25 women with genotype Pro12Pro. The fat intake was estimated by food records, being used for the division of groups, GA (until 30% of the total energy expenditure (TEE)) and GB (greater than 30% of the TEE). Biochemical and anthropometric evaluations were conducted in fasting, following the test meal high in n-6 PUFA and postprandial biochemical evaluations. IR and insulin sensitivity (IS) were assessed by HOMA-IR (Homeostasis Model Assessment) and QUICKI (Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index), respectively. Results and discussion: GA presented normal HOMAIR and QUICKI. GB presented higher body mass index (BMI), HOMA-IR, saturated fatty acids (SFA) and monounsaturated (MUFA) intake higher, compared with GA (p < 0.05). In GA, the MUFA intake was negatively correlated with HOMA-IR, fasting glucose and insulin, and positively with QUICKI. The fat and SFA intake contributed to the increase in body mass and IR. However, MUFA intake may have reduced the impact of high fat diet in glicidic metabolism. It is suggested that obese women with Pro12Pro genotype in the PPARγ2 gene avoid high fat and SFA diets, prioritizing MUFA for controlling obesity and improving the IS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To evaluate the effects of gestational weight gain (GWG) on maternal and neonatal outcomes. Materials and Methods. During 2009, women in the immediate puerperium were assessed at the Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. GWG was considered optimal when ⩽18 kg, ⩽16 kg, ⩽11.5 kg and ⩽9 kg for women who, before pregnancy, were underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese, respectively. Results: A total of 38% of women gained more than the recommended weight during pregnancy Women with normal weight previous to pregnancy who exceeded gestational weight-gain recommendations had a risk of oligo/polyhydramnios (OR 2.1, CI 95% 1.04-4.2) and cesarean delivery; overweight women previous to pregnancy had an increased risk of preeclampsia (OR 2.2 CI 95% 1.1-4.6) and newborn macrosomia (OR 2.5, CI 95% 1.1-5.6); and obese women had a risk of newborn macrosomía (OR 6.6 IC 95% 1.8-23). Pre-pregnancy weight was more greatly associated with gestational diabetes than gestational weight gain. Conclusions. Women whose weight gain during pregnancy is outside of the recommended ranges had an increased risk of adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Obesity is associated with increased inflammation. C-reactive protein (CRP) and inflammation-sensitive plasma protein (ISPs) are inflammatory markers. Proinflammatory process may be influenced by high saturated fatty acid intake. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of saturated fatty acids load on postprandial circulating levels of PCR and ISPs (α1-antitrypsin, α1-acid glucoprotein, and fibrinogen) in obese women. Design: A total of 15 obese women (age = 31,7 ± 4,5 years, BMI = 37,9 ± 7,3 kg/m²) and 15 lean controls women (age = 30,6 ± 4,6 years, BMI = 20,6 ± 2,6 kg/m²) were recruited for this study. After and overnight fast subjects ate the fat load consisted of 75 g of fat (100% saturated fatty acid, 0% cholesterol), 5 g of carbohydrates, and 6 g of protein per m² body surface area. Postprandial serum levels of CRP, α1-antitrypsin, α1-acid glucoprotein, and fibrinogen were measured. Anthropometry and blood biochemical parameters were measured in both groups. Results: The obese women had fasting serum PCR levels higher (p = 0,013) and fibrinogen (p = 0,04) than those of control women. Serum CRP and fibrinogen levels was positively related to body mass index (BMI) in obese group. There weren't differences in fasting serum α1-antitrypsin levels (p = 0,40), and α1-acid glucoprotein (p = 0,28) levels in obese group in comparison to lean control group. Serum CRP, α1-antitrypsin, α1-acid glucoprotein, and fibrinogen did not change postprandially (p = > 0,05 difference to fasting levels). Conclusion: A high-saturated fatty acids load is not associated with serum CRP, α1-antitrypsin, α1-acid glu-coprotein, and fibrinogen levels increase. Serum α1-antitripsin and α1-acid glucoprotein levels are not increased in obese women. Serum PCR and tibrinogen levels are increased in obese women, and are positively related to BMI. Leptin is a peptidic hormone secreted by the fat tissue and plays an important role in body weight regulation. After menopause, weight gain increases as well as android-like obesity. Previous studies suggest a relationship between leptin level, body mass index (BMI) and fat distribution. Objective: To establish the relationships between serum leptin, BMI, waist circumference (WC), and waist/hip ratio (WHR). Methodology: 48 women under the age of 60 years and with amenorrhea for longer than one year were assessed. Leptin and estradiol (ELISA) levels were determined; normal values: 3.63-11.09 ng/mL and 0-65 pg/MI. BMI (WHO), WC > 88 cm, and WHR > 0.80 were considered as indicators of cardiometabolic risk. Results: Mean age for the group was 54 ± 3.9 years; leptin: 8.4 ± 3.7 ng/mL, and estradiol: 17.6 ± 10.0 pg/mL; BMI: 27.0 ± 4.9 kg/m²; WC: 86.2 ± 8.6 cm; and WHR: 0.84 ± 0.06. Twenty percent of the women had hyperleptinemia, 58.4% malnourishment due to excessive intake, 35% presented WC cardiovascular risk. The highest leptin value was found in obese women. There was no association between serum leptin levels and anthropometrical variables. There was a significantly positive correlation between weight, height, BMI, WC, hip circumference, and estradiol. Conclusions: Postmenopausal women presented a high prevalence of overweight/obesity, android-like body fat distribution and normal serum leptin levels. Objectives: The purpose of this review is to focus on the importance of metabolic syndrome (MBS) and its increased prevalence in postmenopausal (PM) women. Also the role of hormonal therapy in PM women with MBS will be discussed. Methods: Review of the relevant literature and results from recent clinical trials. Results: MBS may occur in 40% of PM women and is largely determined by overweight status and obesity. Weight gain, particularly an increase in central fat mass increases in PM women, beginning a few years prior to menopause. Hormonal Therapy (HT) in normal PM women generally decreases abdominal fat, but the effect of transdermal estrogen is preferable to oral therapy in this regard. In women with MBS, oral therapy was found to increase leptin and the leptin/adiponectin ratio, while transdermal therapy showed no changes. HT has been found to improve insulin resistance in PM women, although the data are mixed. In women with MBS, oral therapy was found to worsen parameters of insulin resistance, while transdermal therapy had minimal effects overall. Women with MBS have elevations in several inflammation and coagulation factors. Both oral and transdermal HT reduce inflammation markers except for levels of CRP and MMP-9, which increase with oral therapy, but are unaffected by the transdermal route. Oral estrogen has a small pro-coagulant effect, not observed with transdermal therapy, in both normal PM women and those with MBS. The beneficial effects of HT on lipids occur in PM women with and without MBS, although the changes in the latter are minimal. Blood pressure was not affected by HT in women with MBS. Conclusions: Weight gain and obesity largely drives the increased prevalence of MBS in PM women. Use of HT is beneficial overall for reducing many of the parameters of MBS. Overweight and obesity are considered risk risk factors for the development of chronic degenerative diseases. In order to know its prevalence, a descriptive, cross-sectional study was made. The study included 120 women, 18 and 60 years old living in a community of Cojedes Estate, Venezuela. Anthropometric measures were taken to determine the body mass index (BMI), waist/hip ratio (W/H/), classified according to the Worlld Health Organization criteria. The results showed that 41.7% (n = 50) were overweight, 39.2% (n = 47) had normal weight and 19.1% (n = 23) presented some degree of obesity. Predominant pattern of body fat distribution was central, and 55.8% were in high risk of chronic degenerative diseases, mainly the group between 25 to 29 years old. The W/H ratio showed significant differences (p < 0.05) according to age group. The BMI showed a positive correlation (p< 0.05) with the waist circumference. A great proportion of the studied population is in high risk of developing chronic degenerative diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Obesity rates have drastically increased worldwide, particularly in women in reproductive-age as well as in children. This is relevant for the challenges that the health system will face in the near future. Recently, national surveys in Mexico and United States have shown a moderate decrease in the acceleration rates of obesity. Hopefully such behavior reflects results from preventive programs, or perhaps is due to methodological unidentified issues. Importantly, such decrease seems insufficient to reach the "ideal" prevalence of obesity. From the genetic point of view, based in the presence of the R230C polymorphism in the ABCA1 gene identified only in Amerindian populations it seems that some ethnic groups might be more susceptible to develop obesity. However, it is important to take into account that susceptibility may also be explained by interactions among variants in different genes. In conclusion, obesity prevalence in Mexico is close to those in developed countries, and it is particularly alarming in adolescents and women in reproductive-age. Obesity is a known risk factor for multiple diseases, but it must be accurately diagnosed to achieve all its predictive value. We carried out this analytic, prospective, cross-sectional. Study, that included 187 women (25 to 60 years of age) who attended the Unit of Assistance for the Obese Patient, at the Pastor Oropeza Hospital, Lara State (January-July, 2006). The analysis was performed by multiple linear regression. There was a significant relationship between body fat content and body mass index (coefficient = 0.57), although this relationship changed across age groups (coefficient = 0.15; global r2 = 0.67). We concluded that body mass index is reliably associated to body fat content and it could be used to classify obesity, provided the age of the patient is taken in to account. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Se examina la relación entre las hormonas sexuales endógenas y la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en las mujeres posmenopáusicas. Se concluye que la mayor parte de la correlación de la testosterona biodisponible (y una menor parte de las correlaciones del estradiol y la globulina fijadora de las hormonas sexuales) con la diabetes se debe a la adiposidad y resistencia a la insulina.

Se presenta un editorial sobre el papel del ginecoobstetra en el tratamiento de la obesidad en las mujeres en edad reproductiva. Entre los temas discutidos se incluye un análisis de los riesgos de salud de la obesidad y del sobrepeso, incluso diabetes tipo 2 y diabetes gestacional, el efecto de la obesidad en el embarazo en las generaciones siguientes y la importancia de las recomendaciones nutricionales durante el embarazo.

Introducción: La obesidad tiene una prevalencia creciente en nuestra población, y se ha relacionado con un aumento de mortalidad perinatal y diversas complicaciones durante la gestación. Objetivos: Estudiar el efecto de la obesidad severa y mórbida (IMC > 35) durante la gestación en los resultados del embarazo y el recién nacido. Métodos: Estudio de casos y controles, con 6069 embarazadas atendidas en el Hospital Universitario Virgen de las Nieves entre 2007 y 2012 y clasificadas en obesas severas o mórbidas (IMC > 35) y normales (IMC 18,5 a 25). Se comparan los resultados obstétricos (mortalidad perinatal, tipo de parto, y complicaciones del embarazo) y neonatales (Peso, test de Apgar y pH en arteria umbilical al nacer). Resultados: La embarazadas con obesidad severa o mórbidate-nían una paridad inferior y tasas más elevadas de hipertensión y diabetes durante el embarazo con respecto a embarazadas normales. Una vez ajustadas por estas variable, este grupo de gestantes presentó un riesgo relativo mayor de parto prematuro (< 33 semanas), colonización por estreptococo grupo B, inducción de parto, presencia de meconio en liquido amniótico, tasa de cesáreas, fetos macrosomas (> 4.000 g) y mortalidad perinatal. Conclusión: La obesidad severa o mórbida durante el embarazo incrementa la mortalidad perinatal del feto y recién nacido, así como el riesgo de cesárea, así como otras complicaciones como la hipertensión y la diabetes materna.
