The use of creative writing based on Narrative Medicine (NM) as active learning for the teaching of the professional role in Health Sciences, has aroused interest in recent years. An exploratory systematic review was carried out to know the effectiveness of its application in university students in the field of social sciences and health. The studies were retrieved from WoS, Scopus, Dialnet and REDIB. The analysis of 8 selected articles described this methodology as a useful tool to foster the narrative voices of students, encourage reflection on clinical encounters, encourage attentive and empathetic clinical care and facilitate emotional management. This methodology also allows the development of language skills, creativity, and spontaneity in the construction of professional identity and professionalism. Despite the scarcity of studies, its usefulness at the curricular level seems promising, although it is necessary to analyze in depth the phenomenon of study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An existential analysis of the story that patients make related to the experience of suffering from cancer is presented. The objective of the study was to observe, describe and understand the way in which suffering reveals the temper of anguish and with it, the possibility of an authentic existence. Although this study only analyzes the report of two patients, the complete sample consists of 25 patients, all adults, of both sexes, aged between 40 and 70 years. The type of cancer varied, but in all cases it was treated with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Participation was voluntary and with consent. The interpretation and analysis was done by confronting the hermeneutical theories with the life stories of the patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article contains the results of the empirical analysis carried out in 2012- 2016 which sought to examine whether patients' narratives of their illness were present in doctor-patient communication and whether this subjective story was significant to both sides of the medical communication in Russian somatic disease medicine. The research was carried out in four stages and combined qualitative and quantitative methods, analyzing the perspectives of patients, doctors and medical students through surveys and interviews as well as looking at online doctor-patient communication in health forums. In all four stages, the results of the research showed that little value was placed on the subjective experience of disease in doctor-patient interactions. The topic of narrative medicine is new to Russian social studies, making the results of this research an important contribution to the establishment of narrative medicine as a global idea advocating the universal therapeutic and ethical value of patients' stories of illness in the "remission society," in which chronic pathologies dominate. The beginnings of bioethics faced the conflict between scientifically orientated biomedicine based on evidence, and the bioethical concern with personal values in informed consent, to sustain an interpersonal relationship in clinical encounters. Therapeutic medicine and biomedical research contribute to the free participation of patients and probands, which is expressed in the narrative that highlights the existential values of each person and the social context where they live. The medical humanities have been called upon to assist the healthcare professions to engage in narrative communication, by developing medical and bioethical narratives. Its influence to raise the narrative elements in biomedical communication has been inadequate and declining influence; their ancillary tasks to develop a bioethical narrative have been unable to revive bioethics steeped in academicism and social irrelevance, to the point where the discipline is seen to be in a crisis of validation. This article explores non-academic literary sources that treat with competence and amenity the issues that bioethics has been unable to solve. Two recently published novels are discussed: I. McKewan´s The children act, and M. de Kerangal´s Spanish version of Réparer les vivants, both books presenting a little-explored way of treating bioethical issues in a fictional form. The present paper analyses Dolores (1869), a short novel by Colombian writer Soledad Acosta de Samper, who undertook intense and extensive intellectual activity during her prolonged lifetime. This paper discusses the implicit relationship between the woman as an intellectual subject and her ill body as the allegory of a type of subjectivity uncomfortable for the community of learned men, through which such dissonance is retransformed into a metaphor of the pathological body (in this case, a leprous body that disintegrates in a monstrous way) as a synonym of the learned woman. In this way the writing of such a body can also infect others through a style of writing which transgresses the cannon; thus the epistolary genre, intimate, infecting the generic integrity of the republic of literature. Material and Methods. This study was carried out in Hermosillo, Sonora, México with the participation of third grade medical school students at the University of Sonora, strategies utilized in this investigation where: a) Literary text essays and reports on their clinical practice experience.. Type of study a prospective and observational Objective. To bring near students to humanistic areas of medicine and into clinical practice. Results. Medical students were able to identify in literary texts in accordance to themes propped, problems that they relate to with our everyday reality that they live actually; It allowed to reflect in aspects like; the deficiencies of the medical system and the way it effects their clinical practice in a context predominant of materialistic culture focused in technology. The present work was complemented with a revision of their experience in medical clinical consultation: they detected the necessities in better development for abilities and deficiencies in their learning Discussion. Two aspects are relevant in this study. We reemphasize the identification of deficiencies and necessities that the medical students perceived about their learning: lack of clinical practice, to relate with other persons (patients), learning limited to textbooks only, professor instructors that work like guides and role models. Conclusions. We consider unpostponable to design and incorporate into medical schools curricula subjects to cover better with basic necessities of clinical practice that require more resources in learning and investigation.
