The article examines political and ethnic conflicts in Bolivia between 2000 and 2008. It focuses particularly on violent confrontations in 2007 and 2008 between the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), led by Bolivian president Evo Morales, and the Media Luna movement based in Santa Cruz, Bolivia and the eastern lowlands region of the country, that sought autonomy. Issues at the center of the conflict were a new constitution, the distribution of power, and benefits from natural resources. The author highlights the ethnic nature of the conflict with the ethnic divisions between whites and indigenous peoples in Bolivia and the role of Morales as the first Indian president in Bolivia.
