The study of mental health also involves addressing clinical psychopathology and criminal acts, conditions that require preventive and comprehensive treatments. This research aims to describe clinical psychopathology in terms of symptoms in the male prison population serving a sentence for the crime of murder in the Centro de Privación de Libertad, Azuay No. 1, Ecuador in the year 2023. It had a quantitative approach, non-experimental, cross-sectional design and descriptive scope. The population consisted of 51 persons deprived of liberty. A bio-socio-demographic-legal form and the Personality Assessment Inventory were used. The main results show that they were young adults, single, high school graduates and from an urban area. The judicial characteristics that stand out are self-defense, alcohol consumption and presumption of innocence. In the prevalence of clinical psychopathology, drug problems, paranoia and antisocial traits, as well as egocentrism and hypervigilance stand out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, the most influential variables of suicidal behaviour in prisons in Europe are identified. To this end, a literature search was conducted from 2010 in the databases of Web of Science (Core Collection), Scopus, Psicodoc and the ProQuest platform (PsycExtra, Psychology Database, PsycArticle, Criminology Collection, and PsycINFO), selecting articles and reviews, with samples of adult inmates with suicidal behaviour. Articles with samples of juveniles, non-prisoners and non-European prisons were excluded. The results obtained with 8,468 inmates describe prior history as the most relevant risk factor for suicide, with family support being the most relevant protective factor. There is insufficient research on the influence of gender on suicidal behaviour, as well as a scarcity of studies with a sufficient sample of inmates from different European countries. Programmes involving men convicted of intimate partner violence are subject to a wide range of discussions these days. There are numerous international debates regarding programmes aimed at men convicted of intimate partner violence. Some of the most controversial issues are: a) intervention approaches, b) the possibility of performing specific treatments according to the offender's characteristics, or c) the need to take account of external factors such as institutional coordination or the specifics of the therapeutical process (context, therapeutical alliance, motivation of the convict, and the therapist). The aim of this article is to review the main themes that are the focus of this international debate and weigh their impact on the research and the principal programmes that exist in Spain for men convicted of gender violence. The conclusions show that research in Spain is gradually incorporating the topics identified internationally such as the efficacy of programmes in different contexts, the existence of typologies, motivational aspects, analysis of dropouts, risk factors, cultural aspects, or offenders' addictions problems. The main objective of this research was to analyze whether the Program for Prisoners for Emotional Domestic Violence (Rodríguez-Espartal, 2012) is more effective than cognitive-behavioral treatment or no treatment in inmates imprisoned for violence against women. Participants were 36 male imprisoned for crimes related to violence against women in the Provincial Prison of Jaén II, divided into three groups according to treatment: cognitive-behavioral therapy (n = 11), emotional (n = 13), and control (n = 12). The efficacy of treatment was measured by its influence on a series of cognitive behavioral variables: distorted thoughts about women and the use of violence, expectations about change, aggression, anger, impulsivity, and stages of change. There was a greater decrease in distorted thoughts about women and the use of violence and an increase in the expectations about change in inmates who received emotional treatment. No change was found in other variables among inmates receiving treatment but there was an increase in negative results in the control group. Our results highlight the need for batterer intervention programs and to select the treatment that best fits the characteristics of these men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Barcelona Men's Penitentiary Centre, there has been a recent increase in offenders serving time for traffic offences. The objective of this research is to obtain a psychological profile of a sample of 115 inmates, to assess what the predictors of aggressive driving are and, finally, to compare the possible existence of different types, depending on the absence or presence of other offences with or without aggression. The results show that causes of, or states that cause, irritation, as well as a family history of aggressive driving and the presence of psychiatric disorders are all predictors of aggressive driving. They also show that physical aggression is a predictor of accidents. There are no differences in offenders who have committed other types of offence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this cuasi-experimental study the effectiveness of a psychological treatment program for men who were in prison because of having committed a serious offence of gender violence is tested. The sample consisted of 148 men who were imprisoned in 18 Spanish prisons. The psychological treatment was a cognitive- behavioral program, in a group format, with 20 weekly sessions that lasted for 8 months. The results showed a significant modification of the irrational beliefs both about women and about violence as a strategy to cope with everyday difficulties. Likewise a significant decrease of the psychopathological symptomatology, of anger and impulsivity, as well as a relevant increase in the self-esteem, was obtained. On the other hand, results indicated that the only difference between the patients who dropped out of treatment and the ones who completed it was the lack of previous criminal record. High impulsivity and depressive symptoms before treatment predicted a poorer therapeutic outcome. Implications of this study for future research in this field are commented upon. INTRODUCTION: One of the most typical clinical problems is the assessment of malingering in the field of forensic and penitentiary psychiatry. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to find associations between different personality types and psychometric response styles. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Subjects: participants consisted of 41 imprisoned male offenders. Instruments and data collection: the psychometric tools used were the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-II) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2). Statistics: data were analyzed with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, version 10.0). A p < 0.05 significance level was proposed. RESULTS: There is significant correlation between personality types and styles of responses in the inventories. CONCLUSIONS: The greatest relationships were found between personality types shaping cluster B of DSM-IV-TR and validity indexes that measure malingering as response style. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
