Introduction: An increment of multiple pregnancies has existed in the last years, which are considered to be as a high reproductive risk due to the high morbidity and mortality incidence either maternal or perinatal, reason why, a great importance is attributed to the opportune follow up of the risk factors associated with these pregnancies. Objective: To characterize pregnant women with multiple pregnancies in Camagüey province according to selected variables. Method: An observational, descriptive and analytic study was carried out on 180 pregnant women with multiple pregnancies, treated in Ana Betancourt de Mora Provincial Gynecobstetric Hospital of Camagüey province, from January, 2020 to December, 2022. Results: There was a prevalence of patients from the 25-30 age group (35.0%) and white skin color (72.8%). Chronic hypertension (12.8%) and coffee consumption (5.6%) were the main personal and toxic pathological precedents; there was a prevalence of nonparous pregnant women (47.2%) and absence of family history of twins (92.2%). Most of the pregnancies were spontaneously conceived; while dichorionic and diamniotic pregnancies were more frequent. Pre-eclampsia, eclampsia and low birth weight were the main maternal and perinatal morbidities. Conclusions: The presence of multiple risk factors was confirmed in pregnant women with twin pregnancy, as well as the consequences in maternal and perinatal health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: the indigenous population is vulnerable and there is limited understanding of their somatometric indicators and APGAR score at birth. Aim: the objective of the study was to explore the association of the condition of indigenous newborn (INB) on somatometric parameters and APGAR score at birth. Methods: this study employed an exploratory cross-sectional design, utilizing the registry of newborns (NB) from a private clinic. The APGAR score at one minute after birth, as well as nutritional indicators derived from measurements of weight, height, and perimeters, were taken into consideration. The statistical analysis involved the use of logistic regressions. Results: the analysis included 7413 NB (1.8 % INB), 52 % were male and 8.1 % were born preterm (gestational age < 37 weeks). In comparison to non-indigenous NB, the INB group showed a higher risk of malnutrition (8 % vs. 6.3 %; p < 0.001), a greater prevalence of excess weight (7.3 % vs. 1.8 %; p < 0.001), smaller head circumference (33.6 cm vs. 34.1 cm; p = 0.017), smaller abdominal circumference (30.9 cm vs. 31.5 cm; p = 0.011), and a higher occurrence of low APGAR scores (< 7) (8.7 % vs. 1.2 %; p < 0.001). Furthermore, the indigenous condition was independently associated with low birth weight (< 2.500 g) (OR, 0.4; 95 % CI, 0.2; 0.9), excess head circumference (OR, 2.7; 95 % CI, 1.5; 4.7), and APGAR score < 7 points (OR, 8.3; 95 % CI, 4.2; 16.5). Conclusions: the indigenous condition was associated with factors that have adverse effects on the health of NB, including reduced head circumference and suboptimal performance on the APGAR scale. Introduction: Preterm birth and low birth weight constitute a health problem worldwide, since they represent an important predictor of development and postnatal growth, as well as an indicator of newborn morbidity and mortality. Objective: To characterize mothers with preterm and low weight infants according to clinical and epidemiological variables. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out from January to December, 2022, of 35 mothers with preterm and low weight infants, belonging to the East Area Teaching Polyclinic in Camagüey city. Age, nutritional state, risk classification, prenatal control, preconcepcional reproductive risk, multidisciplinary visits, diseases characteristic of pregnancy, birth state, detected deficiencies and causes were among the analyzed variables. Results: In the series there was prevalence of the 35 and over age group (25.7%), obesity (37.1%), high risk mothers (45.7%) who received among 8-14 prenatal controls, and bad obstetric history (31.4%). On the other hand, 22.9% of the mothers had low weight children and 31.4% preterm children; as long as there were difficulties in follow up due to absences (57.1%). Conclusions: The mothers presented unfavorable clinical and epidemiological characteristics, such as the 35 and over years, obesity, high risk, bad obstetric history and vaginal infection as a disease characteristic of pregnancy, which influenced the infants to be preterm or low weight, or both. Introduction: Low birth weight (LBW) newborns are 20 to 40 times more likely to die than normal weight newborns. The objective of the study was to establish the socioeconomic characteristics of mothers associated with BPN in Colombia according to data from the National Demographic and Health Survey (ENDS 2015). Methods: A secondary analysis of the ENDS 2015 was carried out. The associations between the socioeconomic characteristics of the mother and the LBW were calculated. Results: The distribution by gender showed a predominance of the female sex, presenting a prevalence of LBW higher than the male (9.50 % vs 8.29%). educational level of the mother (OR 1.11 95% CI 0.949445-1.306799), Conclusion: it is concluded that BPN is more likely in female newborns of mothers whose ages are under 20 years or over 40 years with an educational level below undergraduate. Objective: To learn about the experiences of women who are milk donors and users of the human milk bank, who are mothers of pre-term infants, low birth weight infants and sick newborns hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Method Descriptive, qualitative, micro ethnographic study following the method proposed by James Spradley, focused semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 human milk donor/receiver mothers. Results: six categories were established: human milk for humans, motivation and maintenance of human milk donation, recognition of Human Milk Banks (HMLB) as a suitable place for donation, donating human milk requires commitment and technique, feelings of women donors and recipients, barriers to donation, from these categories emerged the central category "Donating human milk saves lives" Conclusions Donating and receiving human milk is an experience in which biological, cultural, emotional and political aspects are linked. Women demand social recognition of the work of Human Milk Banks in the promotion, protection, support of breastfeeding, nutrition and protection of premature and sick newborns in neonatal units. Introduction: The low birth weight is considered an indicator of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Objective: To identify the risk factors associated with low birth weight in a health area of Ramón Lopez Peña Teaching Polyclinic, in Santiago de Cuba. Methods: An observational analytic case-control study was carried out, that included 20 newborns with low birth weight (cases), and another group integrated by 80 infants, who didn't present this condition (controls), belonging to the health area abovementioned, from January to December, 2021. The ratio of crossed products, the confidence interval, chi-square test and the attributable risk in exposed percentage were determined. Results: The preterm birth, multiple pregnancy and low maternal weight presented a ratio of crossed products of 13.7; 7 and 3.2, respectively. In a same way, it was elevated in the diseases related to pregnancy, such as anemia, hypertension and vaginal and urinary infections. Conclusions: The inadequate weight at the first prenatal visit, preterm childbirth, multiple pregnancy and the presence of diseases related to pregnancy were the risk factors associated with low birth weight. Introduction: The periodontal disease as risk factor of preterm births and low birth weight, as well as the existence of efficient multifactorial mathematical models to predict the intensity of this risk, open new perspectives of prevention for both entities. Objective: To determine the current state and metaanalysis of the risk relationship between the periodontal disease, preterm births and low birth weight. Methods: A literature review and a metaanalysis were carried out with search in databases MEDLINE, PUBMED, SciELO, LILACS, BBO and Cochrane of studies from 1996 to 2020, in humans, in English and/or Spanish languages. Results: Two thousand 323 articles were found; 1 429 were excluded because they were duplicated and in other languages, 742 had nothing to do with the thematic of risk action, 105 belonged to other types of studies, 32 did not meet CASPe and Newcastle - Otawa evaluation criteria and just 15 conformed the sample of metaanalysis. More than 50 % of these articles show risk association between the periodontal disease and the adverse results of pregnancy, but risk prediction is not carried out in none of them. There is a great heterogeneity in the studies regarding methodological limitations and form of measuring the periodontal disease, result of the studied pregnancy and evaluation of the gestational age. Periodontal disease in pregnancy has been related as a causal factor of premature birth and low birth weight, a theory supported by the scientific community in articles published in international journals. The general objective is to describe the relationship of periodontal disease in pregnant women with low birth weight and/or premature birth according to dental professionals who work in the national health system in 2020. The methodology used was a mixed approach, where data were obtained from the SIMOW system that establishes the number of medical and dental check-ups for pregnant women in 2020. Likewise, qualitative, because the instrument of interviewing through digital media was used to evaluate and analyze the experiences of dental professionals who work in the national health system. Among the most important results, the coverage of dental check-ups is 35% compared to the coverage of medical check-ups for pregnant women and the newborn, the interviewed dentists recognize periodontal disease as a risk factor that can lead to premature birth and low Birth weight. Therefore, it is concluded that dental check-ups are important for the prevention of periodontal disease in pregnant women, a risk factor for premature birth and low birth weight. Background: Cuban fertility is below replacement, a condition that has been maintained for more than four decades. The values of the adolescent fertility rates do not correspond to the fertility level of the country. Granma province in 2020 had the highest adolescent fertility rate in the country, a behavior that persists for several years. Objective: to describe the behavior of adolescent fertility in Granma and its territories during 2015-2020. Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study on mothers under 20 years of age in Granma province during 2015-2020. The specific rates for this age group, relative weight of adolescent fertility, according to the area of residence, were taken into account, and those born with low weight from adolescent mothers were analyzed. Results: Granma province and its municipalities show high adolescent fertility values, above the national average. There was an increase in the values of the relative rates and weights in the period of analysis, as well as in the percentages of low birth weight children of adolescent mothers. In rural areas, the values of the selected indicators were higher. Conclusions: actions should be integrated to reduce fertility and adolescent pregnancy in the province. Although there are sexual and reproductive health education programs, the work of the institutions must be integrated to reduce this behavior in adolescent girls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objetive: The present study focused on determining if the hemoglobin difference of the third and first trimester of gestation greater than - 1 (decreased hemoglobin delta) is a risk factor for low birth weight in term newborns at Hospital Belen from Trujillo. Material and Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study in which 218 newborns were included according to the selection criteria. The patients were divided into two group of patients with decreased and non-decreased maternal hemoglobin delta: applying the relative risk and the statistical chi testsquare. Results: The frequency of low birth weight in pregnant women with decreased hemoglobin delta was 32/109 = 29%; the frequency of low birth weight in pregnant women with undiminished delta hemoglobin was 18/109 = 17%. Declined maternal hemoglobin delta is a risk factor for low birth weight with a relative risk of 1.78 [CI: 95% (1.45 - 3.56) p <0.05]. Background: The variability in newborn birthweight, whether low birth weight or macrosomia, can contribute to maternal and infant morbidity and mortality as well as be a predictor of lifelong health. Objective: Determine socio-demographic factors, pathologic history, exposure to psychoactive substances, physical activity levels, and maternal diet as related to birth weight in newborns an in IPS in Medellin, Colombia 2018. Materials and Methods: Cohort study using maternal information obtained from following a sample of mothers of newborns until their infant's birth. Results: Average age of the mothers was 24±6 years and average newborn birthweight was 3150g. Previous pregnancies, consumption of dairy products, intake of protein, and use of dietary supplements were factors present in mothers of newborns with higher birthweight. Having ever smoked, history of preeclampsia, previous delivery, abortion in previous pregnancy, and intake of ultra-high processed foods (UHPF) were factors found among mothers whose infants had lower birthweight. Conclusions: It is recommended that pregnant women limit intake of highly processed foods, supervise their intake of dairy products, protein and dietary supplements in women who have had previous pregnancies, history of preeclampsia, abortions, or who have ever smoked. Objective: to determine the relationship between minute APGAR and the presence of oligohydramnios in full-term pregnant women attended at the Niño Jesús Hospital in Barranquilla during the period 2018 to 2019. Materials and methods: descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study, case series type. 203 pregnant women who were treated at the Niño Jesús Hospital, with term pregnancy and ultrasound diagnosis of oligohydramnios (ILA less than or equal to 5 cm), during the years 2018 and 2019 were included. Sociodemographic and gyneco-obstetric variables were related to the APGAR and ILA and results were compared using Chi2 and Fisher’s test. Results: the average age of the participants was 23.6 years (SD +/-: 5.7); 48.8% came from municipalities in the Atlántico department and 18.2% from Venezuela; 48.3% had an ILA of 4 to 4.9 and 8.4% had APGAR at one minute less than 7; 4.9% had products with low birth weight; 15.3% of those with ILA from 1 to 3 had APGAR less than 7, compared to 5.6% of those with ILA from 4 to 5 (Chi2: 5.13; p: 0.024). Likewise, 40% of those with low birth weight had APGAR <7 in contrast to 6.7% of those with normal-weight products (Fisher: 0.005). Conclusion: a directly proportional relationship was found between the ILA value and the APGAR results per minute, and this relationship should be analyzed through a case-control study. Similarly, it was deduced that the safest lower level of amniotic fluid with which less adverse perinatal results can occur, such as perinatal asphyxia, is with an ILA equal to or greater than 4 cm. Objectives: To evaluate the predictive capacity of gestational weight gain recommendations regarding low birth weight (LBW) and neonatal macrosomia, proposed by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Latin American Center of Perinatology (CLAP).Materials and methods: The bibliographic search was performed in PubMed, Embase (via Ovid), Cochrane Library, EBSCOhost, Scopus, LILACS and SciELO, obtaining 1,192 articles. Only 5 articles met the inclusion criteria, no study evaluated the CLAP recommendations. Methodological quality was evaluated using QUADAS 2. Results: A total of 1,192 articles were identified, only 5 articles met the inclusion criteria, no study evluated the CLAP recomendations. Sensitivity and specificity to predict LBW and macrosomia varied widely depending on which country the study took place. In the Latin American cohorts, the sensitivity for predicting LBW ranged from 62.8% to 74% and the specificity from 61.7% to 68%, while the sensitivity for predicting macrosomia was 28.8% and the specificity 43.8%. In most studies the positive predictive value was less than 25%, and the negative predictive value was more than 90%. Most studies had high risk of bias and applicability problems in patient selection. Conclusions: The limited methodological quality and representativeness of the studied cohorts, probable unadjusted confounding factors and modest values of sensitivity and specificity suggest the need to develop studies aimed at providing recommendations that fit the epidemiological characteristics of the Peruvian population. Introduction. Necrotizing entercolitis is a disorder characterized by the ischemic necrosis of intestinal mucosa. It is the most serious gastrointestinal disease affecting neonates, with high morbidity and mortality rates, mainly among premature newborns. The purpose of this study is to describe the clinical and anatamo-pathological characteristics of deceased newborns with necrotizing entercolitis, diagnosed at a high-complexity hospital. Methodology. This is a descriptive retrospective study of 21 cases of medical-scientific autopsies performed at a high-complexity hospital in northeastern Colombia, with anatomo-pathological findings of necrotizing entercolitis, performed between January 2013 and July 2017. Results. 85.7% of the newborns were pre-term, and the same percentage had weight at birth below 2.5 kilograms. Regarding the mothers' background, 14.3% displayed a spectrum of hypertensive disorders associated with pregnancy, and 23.8% had maternal infections. The three most frequent locations of necrotizing entercolitis were the ileum, ascending colon and transverse colon. Discussion. According to some authors, up to 85% of all cases of necrotizing entercolitis occur in premature patients, especially in babies with extremely low weight at birth. There are forms of necrotizing entercolitis that occur in full term babies, and they are generally associated with contributing factors, which is consistent with the findings of this study. Conclusions. This study of a Colombian population is consistent with other descriptions of the global population, where necrotizing entercolitis arises more frequently in pre-term newborns and low weight at birth. At present, pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) represents one of the main obstacles for the reduction of maternofetal morbidity and mortality. Moreover, PIH is associated with numerous medical complications whose implications extend over the future development of the product of the pregnancy, such as low birth weight, restriction of intrauterine growth, and multiple perinatal problems; as well as a deterioration of general long-term maternal health. This prominence has highlighted the shortcomings of the current pharmacotherapeutic arsenal for PIH, which often shows unsatisfactory levels of efficacy, or unacceptable adverse effects. Indeed, it is urgent to introduce new alternatives for the treatment of PIH, with the objective of improving maternal and fetal outcomes. Fortunately, this crisis has been developed in parallel with giant steps in the comprehension of the pathogeny of PIH, which opens the doors for a wide spectrum of newly identified interventional opportunities. In particular, the central role of alterations such as chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction has been key in this scenario. Pharmacological classes under study include calcium channel blockers, nitrogen donors, phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors, soluble guanylate cyclase activators, endothelin, and thromboxane antagonists, prostacyclin agonists, and inhibitors of Rho-kinase and xanthine oxidase. In this review, new proposals for the pharmacological treatment of PIH are discussed, with emphasis on new therapeutic targets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Anemia is the condition that has caused the most attention and concern to national and international organizations, as well as to health professionals, affecting one of the most vulnerable groups such as children. According to the World Health Organization, the prevalence of anemia in the world is 24.8%, and an estimated 1620 million people have anemia. Objective: To identify the factors associated with anemia in children who attend the Child Development Center "Los Pitufos de el Valle" Cuenca - Ecuador. Materials and method: Quantitative, analytical case-control study, cross section with retrospective temporality, whose sample size was 52 cases and 52 controls, the study population were children of the Children's Development Center "Los Pitufos". The information was obtained through the elaboration of a data collection sheet, where a review of medical records was carried out, such as the value of hemoglobin in blood, vitamin supplements, weight and height; In terms of birth weight and gestational age, it was obtained from vaccination cards. Associations were sought through the ratio of mummies, χ2 and logistic regression. Results: 52 patients with anemia and 52 without anemia were included. Four factors associated with anemia were identified: Rural residence RM 3.03 (95% CI 1.36-6.77) Micronutrient deficit RM 5.23 (95% CI 1.07-25.54), low birth weight RM 8.33 (95% CI 1.77-39.12) and prematurity RM 5.95 (95% CI 1.77-39.12). Conclusions: Anemia in children was mainly associated with factors related to living in a rural area, micronutrient deficit, low birth weight and prematurity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction. Intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants is one of the pathologies that conditions long-term neurological repercussions, affecting development and growth. Its prognosis and mortality are related to the degree of bleeding. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of preterm infants with intraventricular hemorrhage treated at a referral hospital of the Secretraria de Salud Jalisco en Zapopan. Methods. This was a prospective study conducted in the External Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital General de Occidente during the period from January 1 to July 31 of 2017. Preterm infants under 37 weeks of gestation and a weight of less than 1590 g were included. The exclusion criteria were: preterm infants with major congenital malformations; those who died in the first 24 hours of life and those who did not have transfontanellar ultrasound during their hospital stay. Descriptive statistics were used. Results. During the study period, there were 34 preterm infants; Of these, fifteen (44.1%) had an intraventricular hemorrhage. These newborns had a lower birth weight, a lower gestational age, and a shorter extrauterine life at the time of admission. In this group there was a higher frequency of individuals born vaginally (66.6% versus 21%); had lower use of prenatal steroids (6.6% versus 26.3%); and had a higher resuscitation requirement (53.3% versus 26.3%), greater ventilatory support (73.3% versus 36.8%); and greater use of surfactant and amines (86.6% versus 52.6% and 53.3% versus 5.2%, respectively). The average days of mechanical ventilation were 20.46 and 14.8 respectively. Conclusions. It is essential to know the behavior of intraventricular hemorrhage within our neonatal units to develop improvement plans. Introduction. Childbirths with low birth weight and preterm are a public health problem. In our country, the prevalence of this type of birth has been increasing. In our institution, recently we adopted a policy of keeping under surveillance all late preterm infants weighing less than 1900 g for at least 48 to 72 hours. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe the evolution of this population after the institutional implementation of this measure. Methods. A retrospective study was conducted at the Hospital General de Occidente during the period from October 2016 to May 2018. All late preterm infants weighing 1800 to 1900 g considered healthy were included. The clinical characteristics, maternal and pregnancy history were described, as well as the frequency of complications during their hospital stay. Results. 21 patients were included. The majority were female (n = 13, 61.9%). The average weight of the entire population at birth was 1840 g (IQR 1800 - 1880). The median maternal age was 22 years and 9 (42.9%) of them had a maternal age at risk. There were a total of six multiple pregnancies (28.6%). Only 6/21 (28.6%) completed the prenatal steroid scheme. 19 cases (90.5%) presented at least one complication; the most common were difficulty in feeding in 76.2%, respiratory difficulty in 47.6%, thermal instability in 42.9% and hyperbilirubinemia in 33.3%. The median hospital stay was 6 days (3.5 - 12.5 IQR). Discussion. In our population, more than 90% of the late preterm presented at least one complication. The individuals with the lowest weight were those who mostly presented complications. We suggest based on these results, that all preterm infants weighing less than 1900 g have hospital surveillance 48-72hrs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the research was to determine the factors associated with maternal morbidity due to non-adherence to prenatal controls. The type of study was quantitative, descriptive, non-experimental and retrospective. The population was the pregnant women of the municipality of Palmira and the unit of analysis were those who did not attend the prenatal controls completely. The sample was selected according to those pregnant women who presented comorbidities during the gestational period in order to determine the incidence in the morbidity due to non-adherence to the prenatal controls of the pregnant women in the municipality of Palmira 2017. In agreement they showed that 84% resided in the urban area; the age of greatest prevalence was comprised by pregnant women between 20 and 30 years of age, 51%; 50% were in their first pregnancy; 36% attended less than 4 controls, of which 65% presented preeclampsia; 71% morbidity occurred at a gestational age before term; 55% had a newborn with low weight; 60% were admitted to an intensive care unit and 94% were hospitalized from 1 to 10 days. It is concluded that nonadherence to prenatal control influences the appearance of alterations in the health of the mother such as preeclampsia or organic problems and also in the newborn; mainly, with low birth weight.
