TEACHER attitudes , *TEACHER development , *PROFESSIONALISM , *TEACHERS , *TEST validity , *TEACHER educators - Abstract
This study examines teachers' attitudes towards professional teacher performance assessment and explores whether there are changes in direction and intensity. Teacher assessment is a key public policy to improve both education quality and teacher development. The Likert technique is applied. Measurements are conducted in the years 2008 and 2015 in samples of 812 and 827 teachers, respectively, from Santiago's Metropolitan Area (Chile). The results for the year 2008 show that the constructed scale has a reliability coefficient of 0.937 and a concurrent validity coefficient of 0.567. In 2008, 40.4% of teachers had negative attitudes towards professional teaching assessment. This increased to 43.7% in 2015. It is concluded that the implementation of professional teacher assessments as a public policy, in spite of its long practice, is only partially endorsed by older teachers at municipal schools. ARCHAEOLOGICAL excavations , *DIETARY patterns , *ARCHAEOLOGICAL human remains , *CARBON analysis , *NITROGEN analysis , *FOOD consumption - Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the changes in food consumption patterns throughout the lives of five individuals (n=5), one subadult and four adults, found in archaeological sites of El Remate, Bajo los Cardones and Finca Cruz. All of them are associated with the Formative period (ca. 2500 - 1000 years B. P.) and are located in the Quebrada de Amaicha (Tucumán, Argentina). We propose an analysis of the carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition in the dentin of different sections of the same tooth and in different teeth of the five individuals. This approach sheds light on the way in which the characteristics of children's diets affect their adulthood, as well as providing a more inclusive perspective on consumption patterns in the agropastoralist societies of the study area by integrating young individuals into the analysis. Little intravariation and intervariation was found, with a predominance of food resources framed in the C4 photosynthetic pattern. The exception is an individual, probably female, whose diet was based on C3 resources during the first period of life. This could be the result of the existence of a "childhood diet" or of a change in geographic residence, with both areas being isotopically distinguishable. Finally, we illustrate the methodological steps required to reconstruct life histories through the serial study of human dental pieces. This is a novel approach, which has been applied to human remains from the Argentine Northwest for the first time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to explore the developmental pattern of basic emotion understanding in children aged 3 to 5 years. We know that children identify first facial expressions and understand later the causes of emotions, but are emotions understood at the same time, at the same developmental moment? To carry out this study, a group of 103 boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 5 were evaluated longitudinally. Through the Test of Emotion Comprehension (TEC) identification and causality of four basic emotions – sadness, joy, anger, and fear – were tested over three years. The results, according to previous studies, confirmed the hierarchical structure of these two components, being the identification of the facial expression the first component acquired and the understanding of the cause of the emotion the second component. In addition, it was observed that the understanding of these four emotions does not occur synchronously. For example, the cause of fear is reasonably well understood at the age of three, while the cause of anger seems to be understood later. In addition to deepening the developmental pattern of emotion knowledge, such results could help educators and clinicians to adjust educational programs aimed at improving knowledge and socio-emotional competence in children of this educational stage. SCHOOL children , *PRIMARY education , *ANALYSIS of variance , *ANXIETY , *INVENTORIES - Abstract
Since the three-dimensional theory, school anxiety is defined as a set of symptoms arising from three response systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate school anxiety responses in Chilean primary school students, during three consecutive years, to determine possible changes over time. To this end, 155 children from three different courses were included; they were evaluated for their level of school anxiety for three consecutive years. The instrument used for this was the School Anxiety Inventory for Primary Education (IAEB), which measures the cognitive, psychophysiological and motor anxiety responses. Analysis of variance of repeated measures was performed to determine temporal stability. The results indicated that the mean did not show statistically significant differences, maintaining school anxiety in these children over the three-year period, supporting the possibility that it appears as a stable symptom of the students, rather than responding to specific events in the environment. CYBERBULLYING , *FIVE-factor model of personality , *SUBSTANCE abuse , *SUBJECTIVE well-being (Psychology) , *PERSONALITY development , *AGGRESSION (Psychology) - Abstract
Background/Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze whether the big five personality traits are predictors of problematic internet use (PIU) and whether PIU predicts changes in emotional well-being and externalizing behaviors, as well as in risk internet-related behaviors (cyberbullying and sexting). Method: This study analysed data from 624 adolescents studied on two occasions (T1 and T2) separated by a one-year period, with evaluations of the big five traits, PIU, and the potential outcomes. Results: The results show that low conscientiousness predicts increases in PIU from T1 to T2. Furthermore, results show that a high PIU predicts increases in both proactive and reactive aggressive behavior and in substance use. A high PIU score predicts a decrease in positive emotions. The results also suggest that a high PIU predicts increased cybervictimization and cyberbullying. Conclusions: This study makes it possible to verify that personality predicts the development of PIU in adolescence and that PIU contributes to the development of externalizing problems and the deterioration of subjective well-being. Ampros, Anfas, Aspanias, Atades, Gautena, Gorabide, Plena Inclusión present an investigation with the aim to evaluate the impact of the individualized plan that includes personal objetives, the quality of life and the perception of the people. Reference points are established in a longitudinal analysis of the results. Prior to the development of each person's individual plan, support needs and quality of life were evaluated. In total, 77 people with disabilities participated with different support needs. The objectives of each individual plan were evaluated at the end of the first year and at the end of the second year, at which time the aforementioned scales were once again applied. Significant differences were observed in the results obtained according to the support needs and the assessment made by the professionals according to the years of contact with the person with the disability. The age differences of the participants, the behavioural problems and the achievement of the individual objectives must be taken into account. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Cyberbullying in adolescents is considered as a highly relevant topic nowadays, and yet little is still known in terms of predictors and outcomes. In this study, an incidental sample 624 adolescents (55% girls, 45% boys, ranging between 12 and 19 years of age was evaluated on two occasions separated by a one-year period, to measure cyberbullying, as well as possible personality predictors (big five, attachment styles) and possible psychosocial outcomes (selfesteem, emotional well-being, drug use and aggressive behaviour). The results indicate that low agreeableness predicts an increase in cyberaggression while fearful/preoccupied attachment predicts an increase in cybervictimization. In addition, cyberaggression predicts a decrease in self-esteem and an increase in alcohol consumption; cybervictimization predicts an increase in alcohol and tobacco consumption. Therefore, this study suggests that predictors of cyberbullying can be identified, and that cyberbullying is associated with unfavourable outcomes over time, which should be considered by intervention programs. - Abstract
In Mexico, until the reform to the article 51 of the General Law of Education enacted in 2016, the school calendar of the public schools of basic education determined that they had to comply with 800 hours of classes a year, as stipulated in the study plan and programs. With the aim of expanding learning opportunities, in 2008, the Full-Time Schools Program (FTSP) was established, which increased the total amount of classes to 1 200 hours devoted to teaching in the school year. This research sought to determine the impact of the implementation of the FTSP in the performance of students in the National Assessment of Educational Achievement in Schools. After controlling for sociodemographic covariates and attrition in response bias, the results show that the implementation of the program had a positive effect on the levels of achievement and test scores. - Abstract
BACKGROUND: A cohort study is an epidemiological design in which the frequency of a disease is compared between populations in order to measure the causality of different risk factors; however, due to their great variety of terms, they hinder the correct interpretation of the results. OBJECTIVE: to analyze the main characteristics of the cohort study to facilitate the perform and interpretation of its results. DESCRIPTION: this design is characterized by being a observational and longitudinal study; whose observations identify the causal relationship between the risk factors and the outcomes of interest. According to their variables, the cohorts can be classified as prospective, retrospective or ambispective. In this design, participants who do not present the event of interest at the beginning of the study are included; and after a time then they are compared to identify how many of them developed it and which were the risk factors that they had for developing the disease. Therefore, this type of study allows to know incidence of the event and determine the causal relationship of the different factors expressed by relative risk. CONCLUSIONS: the cohort study is considered the best design to analyze the causality; However, it is costly and difficult to perform, because it uses different techniques to reduce the sources of bias to ensure the reliability of its results. NEUROTICISM , *PERSONALITY , *COMORBIDITY , *ADJUSTMENT disorders , *LONGITUDINAL method - Abstract
Numerous studies have found that both personality and the coping strategies used to manage stress have an important role in the development of mental health problems, particularly adjustment disorder (AD). The aim of this study was, firstly, to analyze differences in neuroticism, comorbidity and coping between a group of patients with AD with a favorable clinical course (n = 58) and another with unfavorable evolution (n = 20); and secondly, to analyze whether these variables could predict clinical evolution 5 years later. The group with unfavorable clinical evolution showed a greater neuroticism, more presence of comorbid personality pathological traits, and a greater use of maladaptive coping strategies. Furthermore, the main risk factors to belong to the group with unfavorable evolution were greater neuroticism, presence of comorbidity and the use of denial coping, whereas the use of planning and instrumental support strategies lowered this risk. - Abstract
Introduction. Evidence suggests higher levels of impulsivity are related to drinking onset and to increment in alcohol drinking. Also, alcohol consumption is related to higher levels of impulsivity and risk taking behaviors. Aims. To examine, by means of a longitudinal design, the influence of impulsivity (trait and behavioral) and risk taking on alcohol consumption and, vice versa, the effect of alcohol drinking on posteriors levels of impulsivity and risk taking. Sample. 161 adolescents (Mean age=15.83±.85) enrolled in four high-schools of Cordoba city (Argentina) participated in the study. Procedure. At each assessment, participants reported their alcohol involvement and completed the UPPS-P (a measure to assess trait impulsivity). They also completed computerized tasks of impulsivity (Go-Stop and SKIP) and risk-taking. Cross-sectional and prospective relationships between the variables of interest were investigated using correlation analysis. Results. Half of the adolescents engaged in heavy episodic drinking. Overall, results supported the reciprocal association between impulsivity and risk taking and alcohol drinking, especially the frequency of heavy episodic drinking. Discussion. The main finding of this study is the finding, with only a 3- month interval, a positive prospective and bidirectional effect between alcohol consumption, impulsivity and risk taking [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research analyzes data from a long-term longitudinal project with the aim of studying the implications of childhood psychopathic traits (measured through the mCPS; modified Child Psychopathy Scale) in adolescent antisocial behavior. Data from 141 children (mean age = 7.80), followed-up six and ten years later, were analyzed. Results indicate that children high in psychopathic traits show relatively high levels of behavioural problems in early adolescence. Moreover, throughout adolescence they show a higher increase in their involvement with antisocial peers, cannabis use, and proactive aggression. Thus, results show that psychopathic traits measured in childhood are linked to a more unfavorable development, particularly to indicators classically associated to adult psychopathic personality (e.g., proactive aggression). INTELLIGENCE levels , *LEARNING ability , *MENTAL health , *CHILD psychology , *PERFORMANCE evaluation , *SHORT-term memory - Abstract
Traditionally the determination of the giftedness has performed with traditional intelligence tests. The main argument to do so has been the temporal stability of this measure. In recent years some authors defend a determination early giftedness in children, although others point out that toddlers evaluation produces a significant number of false positives due to the variability in the measurement of intelligence by different factors such as plasticity, stimulation, etc. therefore proposed the use of complementary indices for giftedness diagnosis. This paper presents a longitudinal study of two years to 49 children aged between 5 and 9 years, initially identified as gifted, to check the stability of your IQ and other measures such as the learning potential and working memory. The results show how learning potential and working memory measures remain stable in time while the IQ of a group of younger children is not maintained during this period. These results indicate the usefulness of P.A. measures as a supplementary index in the determination of the giftedness on young children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LONGITUDINAL method , *INFORMATION sharing , *DIGITAL media , *ORGANIZATIONAL communication , *BUSINESS communication - Abstract
The changes that have occurred in the use of digital media in the internal and external organizational communication of Spanish companies are analyzed. Through a longitudinal empirical study of 1.089 Spanish companies (606 in 2002 and 483 in 2012), it explores the types of information distributed inside and outside companies, as well as the media used. There is a special focus on whether more electronic media is used or more classic forms such as meetings in person or telephone contact. The study observed a considerable increase in the use of electronic means but, contrary to what might be expected, it also reveals an increased use of in-person modes of communication. DRINKING of alcoholic beverages & psychology , *PATH analysis (Statistics) , *PERSONALITY , *SOCIAL support , *PARENT-child relationships ,ALCOHOL & children - Abstract
The present study was aimed to analyze the impact of different risk factors and one protective factor on the frequency of alcohol consumption in children. In addition, it was sought to analyze the meditational role of alcohol expectancies in the relation between more distal factors and alcohol use. Finally, it was examined how initial use of alcohol affected initial alcohol expectancies. A prospective design with more than two causal links was used. Participants were 267 children (63% female, Mean age at baseline = 10.52, SD = 1.22) attending public and private schools for primary education (from third to sixth grade) from the city of Córdoba (Argentina). Different scales were used to measure personality traits, alcohol expectancies, drinking motives, perceived peer alcohol use, perceived parental alcohol use, participants' alcohol use, and perceived parental social support. There were two administrations of all instruments, a baseline and twelve months after another measurement. First, a confirmatory factor analysis was conducted for each of the scales, to obtain statistical evidence to support the use of each scale. Next, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and bivariate analyses were performed between the variables identified as predictors of frequency of alcohol consumption. Finally, to determine the effect that each of the factors included in the study had on frequency of alcohol consumption, a path analysis was conducted. The variables that best explained the frequency of alcohol use one year later were frequency of initial alcohol use, drinking motives in parental and peer contexts. All the remaining variables, but not the protective factor (parental social support), explained a smaller proportion of the total variance. Contentiousness and extroversion traits were less relevant to explain the frequency of alcohol use in children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PRESCHOOL children , *VERBAL ability in children , *COGNITIVE ability , *GENDER mainstreaming , *PHILOSOPHY of mind , *COSTA Ricans - Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze some developmental interactions between cognitive processes during the pre-school period. In specific, we are interested in the interactions between verbal ability and false-belief understanding. The research explores the performance of boys and girls in the execution of false-belief tasks, and evaluates the possible influence of verbal ability development on the sex differences in the false-belief scores. In recent times, the emphasis on the sex differences in this dimension of social cognition has been an important issue stemming from the results of current lines of research. The present work is divided in two studies. The Study 1 compares the false-belief understanding and verbal ability of 17 five-year-olds Costa Rican boys and 17 five-year-olds Costa Rican girls, with the false-belief understanding and verbal ability of 17 six-year-olds Costa Rican boys and 17 six-year-olds Costa Rican girls. The main interest of this first study is focused on the identification of interactions between the cognitive processes of the participants. Subsequently, in Study 2, the same five-year-olds that participated in Study 1 were reevaluated through the same measures after a period of 3 months. The goal of this second study was to follow up the tendencies evidenced in the previous study, after a brief period of time. As an attempt to capture specific details in the development of these processes and given the recommendations of previous works, an interval of 3 months between measures was used here for the first time in the context of this line of research. All the participants were students from a public preschool in the capital city of Costa Rica and native speakers of the Spanish language. Additional inclusion criteria take into account the absence of developmental disorders and other antecedents of psychiatric / psychological intervention. The assessment of false- belief understanding was through a battery that includes four different false-belief tasks. This battery was conformed by 3 first order false-belief tasks, and one second order false-belief task. For the assessment of verbal ability, the study includes 4 subtests (Information, Arithmetic, Vocabulary, and Comprehension) from the WPPSI-III Verbal Ability Scale. The results of the Study 1 evidenced that the six-year-olds girls had significantly higher scores than the five-year-olds girls, both in verbal ability and in false-belief understanding. Interestingly, the improvements in both abilities were mutually dependent. In contrast, the scores at the same variables showed a small but not significant improvement between five and six-year-olds boys. In Study 2, our results confirm these sex differences through the reassessment of the same five-year-olds, and verify that the improvements in both abilities are mutually dependent. The main results of both studies highlights important sex differences in the cognitive development of preschool children. In both studies the false-belief understanding and verbal ability improve significantly in girls but not in boys. The implications of our data are discussed in the context of the actual debate about the interaction between verbal ability and theory of mind during the preschool years. The possible influences of different socialization processes associated with a particular gender are discussed, as well as other tentative mediating factors like the empathic abilities or the influence produced by the context of different daily play scenarios among boys and girls. Research limitations like the particular period of assessment between measures in the Study 2 or the necessity of more tasks for each construct are also discussed. Finally, tentative mechanisms that could account for our data are considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MANAGEMENT , *EXECUTIVES , *TOTAL quality management , *ISO 9000 Series Standards , *QUALITY assurance , *QUALITY control , *INDUSTRIAL management , *DATA , *RESEARCH - Abstract
After more than two decades since it became part of managers' everyday lexicon, quality management is still an integral part of research in management. In particular, Total Quality Management (TQM) and ISO 9000 have taken the centre stage. However, they have been commonly confused in the business environment as to what the differences are. This research is a new contribution to the knowledge on the relationships of TQM and ISO 9000 based on recent empirical data. While past studies have considered them separately, we study them together in one study. We have partly based our study in two organizational theories to explain different effects in performance: institutional theory. and resource based view. The data for this research has been obtained from a large sample of Spanish industrial companies. Longitudinal objective data has also been used. Our conclusion offers newly found support to the advantages of adopting a TQM policy and reflects on the consequences of implementing a quality management system mainly driven by external pressures. PARENT participation in early childhood education , *COMPENSATORY education , *LONGITUDINAL method , *COST effectiveness , *EDUCATIONAL evaluation - Abstract
After describing the program of early compensatory education (from age 3 to 9), called Chicago Child-Parent Centers (CPC), this article collects and analyses the evaluation studies of that Program from a longitudinal perspective - Chicago Longitudinal Study (CLS)-, focusing primarily on methodological problems and afterwards on the short and, mainly, long terms effects, until the targeted subjects of the Program reached the age of 24. The studies confirm the Program has lasting educational (higher performance and educational achievements) and social (higher social adjustment) effects. Subsequently, it analyses which elements of the Program can produce these beneficial effects, which are basically its early inception and parent involvement in their children's education. Finally, it concludes that the Program is highly profitable, based on the educational implications that stem from the study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ANTHROPOMETRY , *STUDENT health , *LONGITUDINAL method - Abstract
The variables were analyzed longitudinal anthropometric that measures the dimension and corporal composition of students of the first Stage of Basic Education of the Educative of the Grand Colombia Educational Unit. The analyzed variables they were: Age, Sex, Weight (W), Height (H), Circumference (AC), Index of Corporal Mass (CMI), cutaneous fold: Triceps (TrP) and Subescapular (SeP), Muscular Area (AM) and fatty Area (FA). 141 children were evaluated with age of beginning to the 6 and 8 years with pursuit of four annual measurements. It was applied a sampling stratified random with equal afijación. The scholars were measured following the techniques established and accepted internationally he stops such aim. One settled down as point of cut between percentiles 10 and 90. Used values of reference were those of the Cross-sectional Study of Caracas (ETC) and of the Longitudinal Study of Caracas (CSCMA). In the analysis longitudinal it was applied to the method "Tracking" and the statistical Kappa in order to determine the channel of growth in each boy and the speed was evaluated of growth of the students. In the four evaluated groups, W and the H have biggest trackng indices with respect to the others variables. The tracking index was constant (Kappa = 0.25) for all the variables and all the groups, opposite situation to the global Kappa, as it was located in the category of "Good" (Kappa = 0.40 to 0.75) for the W and H in all the groups of evaluated scholars. The AC in the girls of both series of ages and in CMI, only in the girls with follow-up at 6 years canalization is observed "Good". One stayed in "Low" (Kappa = < 0,40) in all the sample of students the TrP, SeP, MA and FA.Variables of corporal dimension register good canalization, unlike the variables that measure corporal composition, which are located in loss canalization. The girls of both groups register greater speed of growth in Weight that the boys. The values of the average in the W and H, in evaluated students, end speed (S3) he is superior to initial speed (S1), therefore, the speed of growth it increases with the age. The maximum speed of growth is registered in the S3. In the evaluated students the variables that better they canalize are those of corporal dimension, is inferred, that corresponds to a growth pattern hoped. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this article is to present the issues of a follow-up study between 227 children of first and fourth grade of elementary school. They were tested with several psycholinguistic tests at the beginning of first grade and thereafter they were tested in reading at the end of the first and fourth grade. The variability in the prediction of the initial tests over the first and fourth grades was calculated by correlations and step-wise regression. The results show that there is variability among the predictive variables between these grades. In first grade the most predictive tests were letter naming and phonological awareness. For fourth grade the most predictive tests were letter naming and knowledge of written words and textual structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PEOPLE with schizophrenia , *EMPLOYMENT of people with mental illness , *VOCATIONAL rehabilitation , *LONGITUDINAL method - Abstract
