Verbenaceae are a distinctive element from the Americas, and even when there are numerous useful species in the family until now they have not been listed. In line with this, we present the first checklist of Verbenaceae employed for food purposes in the continent. Seventy two bibliographical sources mentioning at least one edible Verbenaceae were selected from more than 500 references analyzed; as a result, 46 edible species have been registered. The family stands in the Americas regarding the use of aromatic plants. In fact, ca. 40% of the edible species are employed because of their aromatic traits, followed by edible fruits (ca. 33%). Known distribution of Schlegeliaceae family is extended by the presence of Gibsoniothamnus cornutus in western Mexico. The description of the species is lengthened, including the pollen grain description, which is scarcely described in the family. Information on the ecology of the species is provided, and several of its characters are illustrated with photographs and microphotographs. Lippia sect. Rhodolippia is characterized mainly by its coloured bracts which are dispersed with the fruit. In the so far unpublished revision of this section 34 species were recognized and 32 synonyms for 14 species at specific and intra-specific level were included. In contrast to other known species of Priva, the fruits of which are mainly diseminated by adhesion to hairs and feathers of animals, P. aspera develops juicy didymous drupes fit to endozoic dispersal.
