The article focuses on Mexican population policies and African-American immigration from United States to Mexico during the period 1924-1940. The author considers how the post-revolutionary Mexican state defined Mexican national identity in racial terms and discusses the range of categories used to describe African-American immigrants. She explores references to African-American immigrants in documentation from the Mexico's Archivo Histórico del Instituto Nacional de Migración (Historical Archive of the National Migration Institute) citing racial, nationality and work related designations for immigrants and their influence on the construction of Mexican national identity.
