Pet poisoning in veterinary medicine occurs relatively often, although it represents a small percentage of the wide variety of pathological entities the general practitioner faces in daily practice (bacterial, parasitic, metabolic, traumatic, surgical). In turn, within toxic etiologies, those produced by heavy metals are rarely reported today (in order of importance, poisonings produced by warfarin rodenticides, pesticides, human use medications, toxins, garbage, veterinary use medications, toxic plants and foods are described). This report describes two cases of patients that suffered lead poisoning, presenting practically all the clinical signs historically reported by available literature. Despite being a scarcely frequent entity due to the heavy metal's low availability, we consider that having knowledge about the systems that are affected by such exposure, both chronically and acutely, is very important, irrespective of whether they are chronic or acute, since there are alterations that are lethal, and which when recognized in time, enable making a definite biochemistry diagnosis and establishing a specific healing treatment. But the potential sequels that such poisoning can leave, as well as its specific treatment must not be overlooked. To such end, the need to have veterinarian toxicological laboratories and suitable advising lines in place is emphasized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The arrival of pelagic sargassum in Cuba is not a phenomenon of great magnitude as in other Caribbean regions, however, there is no adequate management of this biomass. The use of macroalgae in agriculture is a common practice. The objective of this research was to characterize sargassum collected from the Havana coast in December 2021 and March 2023 to detect variations in its chemical composition and to evaluate its potential for developing agricultural inputs. The collected samples were characterized by phytochemical screening, physico-chemical properties, and the content of heavy metals and natural polymers. In both collections, the presence of alkaloids, reducing sugars, amino compounds and steroids was noted; the physicochemical characteristics and biopolymer content varied between collections; and the concentration of metals was below the permissible limit. The results make sargassum a potential raw material for the production of agricultural bioinputs (biofertilizers, biostimulants or biomaterial). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of Hg in gold mining processes generates waste with a high content of this heavy metal, which can reach different aqueous media due to its constant discharge. In areas of mining activity such as the municipality of Suarez-Cauca, mercury levels between 0,094 µg/L and 1,000 µg/L have been found in microbasins near gold beneficiation plants. According to the above, an analytical methodology for the determination of mercury (Hg) by Cold Vapor-Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (CV-AAS) was validated taking into account the levels allowed by the EPA SW-846 standard for water samples and sediments. This work began with the implementation of Hg calibration curves and digestion processes to determine linearity, repeatability, and working range. The known concentration standards and real samples were evaluated under the typical analytical characteristics in the validation such as linearity, detection limit, quantification limit, precision, accuracy, repeatability, reproducibility, recovery percentages and uncertainty. The validated methodology met the required statistical parameters such as linearity and instrumental precision, registering variation coefficients less than 3%, a quantification limit of 0,35 µg/L and recovery percentages between 97,26 and 101,62%. A performance test was performed with reference samples to ensure reliable analytical results. Values of uncertainties of ± 0,064, ± 0,0440 and ± 0,0410 were obtained for liquid, solid and leached solid samples respectively. Real samples were taken to be analyzed with the validated method. The results obtained allow the determination of Hg in water and sediments in the environmental laboratory of the C.R.C of Popayán-Colombia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high environmental impact of solid and liquid wastes containing toxic elements and metals is having a negative impact on various ecosystems, this work aims to perform a systematic review and bibliometric analysis of scientific production, hoping to understand the retention and absorption capacity of biochar, analysis Capacity of different biochars for certain pollutants including heavy metals; the bibliometric analysis was performed through a review of web of science (WoS) and Scopus databases. The records obtained are analyzed using graph theory and tools such as bibliometrix, Sci2 Tool, Gephi, are divided into three categories: classical, structural and recent, where three perspectives are obtained: uptake of heavy metals, bioavailability and pollutants; Similarly, it was identified that the field of study is new. The main author is Yang Yi, important authors such as Geng Yong and Liang Dong have a fairly high H-index. Introduction. The aquatic ecosystem as the final recipient of waste produced by anthropogenic and natural processes is a growing pollution problem on our planet and currently the presence of heavy metals, they present is an alarming index. This research is important because the Ite district uses river water as an elemental liquid for its daily activities and consumption. The Locumba River sub-basin is located within the Ite district and is characterized by mining and agricultural activities. Objective. Determine the quality of the river sediments through the concentrations of heavy metals (As, B, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Pb) in the upper area of the Locumba river. Materials and methods. In the months of January and March, sampling was carried out in an altitudinal range between 350 and 800 meters above sea level, in the dry and rainy season. The guide for sediment sampling (LSASDPROC- 200-R4), USEPA quality standards, was used. The analyzes were performed by ICPOES Plasma Spectroscopy. Results. The concentration levels show us that heavy metals are present as; Arsenic exceeded standards of 58 ppm on average, Boron with 8.2 ppm, Copper with 372 ppm and Lead with 121 ppm. Conclusions. The sediment quality of the Locumba River due to the presence of heavy metals is not adequate and brings with it environmental risks, affecting the biota and ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present investigation carries out a Systematic Review of the scientific Literature to analyze the purification methods of treatment of affluent with a high content of heavy metals that affects metallic structures, reported in the scientific literature. A total of 805 studies obtained from the Scopus, IEEE, Web of Science, Scielo, Elsevier, Springer databases were initially retrieved; with the Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar and IEEE Xplore search engines; Finally, 16 were included in this investigation. As a fundamental result, 12 methods of purification of affluent contaminated with heavy metals were identified. For the present investigation, the conventional treatment methods for developing countries were especially significant. The results obtained in several investigations indicate that metallic structures are affected when they are in contact with tributaries with a high content of heavy metals, mainly when the tributary is related to industrial waters. Urban agriculture can present risks to human health and the environment when carrying it out on contaminated soils. This study reviewed and analyzed the literature published in this regard with the purpose of establishing analogies between the development of urban and suburban agriculture in Moa municipality and the real potential for heavy metals bioaccumulation. Despite the lack of specific studies related this issue in Moa, there is available literature suggesting that there is a real possibility of contaminating vegetables by heavy metals due to the mobility of these elements in the soil. For that reason, it is imperative to carry out specific studies and developing appropriate mitigation strategies to protect people's health and the environment from a soil phytoremediation strategy adapted to conditions in Moa municipality. This study was focused on nine rhizobial strains associated with Mimosa latispinosa, a fast-growing pioneer species native to the Mandena mining site and able to thrive on post-mining soils. The objectives were to: (i) evaluate the heavy metals tolerance of these isolates by comparing their growth on medium supplemented with different concentrations of heavy metals (Ni, Cd, Cu, and Pb); and (ii) screen the presence of the heavy metal resistance genes on the isolated DNA. While all the strains tested showed varying degrees of tolerance to the metals tested, significantly greater tolerance was observed for isolates RMN 4, RMN 5, RR 11 and RR 14. Regarding the presence of genes responsible for heavy metal resistance, only strains RMN 4, RMN 6 and RR 13 presented the specific amplicons in the case of pcoR gene amplification. The amplification of heavy metals resistance genes for other samples did not yield any specific PCR amplicons, probably due to the use of inappropriate primers or the presence of different mechanisms that allow them to survive under stress conditions. The objective of this study is to know the levels of efficiency in the treatment of heavy metals such as copper and lead from leachates, since these are in most cases above the permissible limits established in the regulations. To determine the removal rates and adsorption capacity of copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) from landfill leachate, sorption with processed coffee pulp was used. Adsorption isotherms were performed on individual solutions using the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Statistically, a 23 experimental design and response surfaces were performed. In addition, thermodynamic parameters were determined to determine the type of sorption. The Langmuir model was found to represent the sorption of copper and lead. The maximum adsorption capacities for copper in individual solutions for doses of 1.3 and 5 grams of adsorbent material were 0.29, 0.12 and 0.59 mg/g, respectively, and for lead they were 0.05, 0. 02 and 0.02 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption rates for copper in doses of 1.3 and 5 grams of adsorbent material were 65.3, 71.0 and 69.4%, respectively, and for lead they were 30.30, 13.80 and 25.40, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters determined that the adsorption mechanism is chemical. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present work, mono and multicomponent adsorption systems of heavy metals (Hg2+, Cu2+ y Ni2+) as adsorbates and carbon nanotubes (CNT) as adsorbents were studied. First, the thermodynamic and QSAR properties at 298.15 and 30815K were determined using computational simulation. Subsequently, Feedforward backprop and Elman backprop artificial neural networks were developed, where the network with the highest precision of the thermodynamic and QSAR properties was the Elman Backprop with the Logsig function using 5 and 3 neurons in the hidden layer at 298.15 and 308.15 K, finally, the networks had an r2 of 0.999, and a mean square error of 0.021, 0.024 and 0.214 respectively. The soil of Villa de la Paz and Matehuala, in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, is contaminated by heavy metals by the mining and metallurgical industries, respectively. Arsenic contamination impacted shallow groundwater. Groundwater contamination reached Cerrito Blanco, where groundwater is used for recreational activities and irrigation. The area of interest (Villa de la Paz, Matehuala and Cerrito Blanco) has been studied to determine the impact on soil, water, and the health of the population. In this paper, a systematic search of the available published literature was carried out. The literature was managed and evaluated according to the methodology proposed by the EPA in 2012 according to soundness, applicability and utility, clarity and completeness, uncertainty and variability, and evaluation and review criteria. The studies that approved these evaluation criteria were used to analyze and synthesize the information. The study of the area of interest began 25 years ago. Soil contamination and Pb and As exposure were found in Villa de la Paz due the presence of the mining industry. Additionally, high concentrations of As were found in shallow groundwater in Matehuala, which reaches Cerrito Blanco through a qanat. While soil contamination is mainly attributed to the mining industry, groundwater contamination is attributed to the metallurgical industry, where the mobility of As present in the soil is controlled by dissolution/precipitation processes of metallic arsenates. Arsenic contamination decreases from 91.5 mg/L of As to 11.2 mg/L along 1.3 km, likelñy due to dilution and natural attenuation via capillary rise of groundwater. The last process is interesting to study in greater depth, as well as the continuity of the research that deals with the remediation of soil and groundwater. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the influence of chitosan on sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L.) in soils contaminated with high levels of metal ions and to propose an economic, simple and natural alternative. The bioaccumulation of Lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd) was evaluated in the cultivated plants in a period of 60 days, for this, treatments were carried out that included the contaminated medium and the foliar application of Quitomax® at different concentrations. At the end of the evaluations, it was evidenced that the sunflower plant absorbs heavy metals, confirming that the application of Quitomax® contributes to solubilizing the Pb and Cd of the soil, in addition to contributing to a greater development of the crop. The lack of knowledge of recurrent diseases, the preventive specificity of plants and the presence of heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in the leaves are factors that limit the use of medicinal plants in the infusion industry. In this context, the objective of this article is to classify the leaves of medicinal plants suitable for preventing or treating recurrent diseases. The Regional Health Directorate provided six recurrent diseases of the Ucayali Region. Through a survey, the herbs, shrubs and trees that the population uses in the treatment of each disease were recognized. The respondents are generally people with an empirical knowledge of the properties of plants, that is why the survey should be as simple and affordable as possible so that they can answer it effectively. One method that has become important within Computing with Words is the 2-tuple model. It combines the use of linguistic scales with the accuracy of a numerical value. Computing with Words is part of Artificial Intelligence and has as its object the use of words instead of numbers to classify. Because the use of natural language is part of the daily practice of all human beings, this method is relevant to aggregate the survey results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this work was to study the mean lethal concentration (LC50) and the biosorption capacity of heavy metals in isolated yeasts from Lake Junín and the Yanamate tailings facility. In both bodies of water were evaluated: pH, electrical conductivity, temperature, total dissolved solids (STD) and heavy metals by ICM-MS, according to the Environmental Quality Standards (ECA) of the Ministry of the Environment-MINAM of Peru. The physicochemical parameters evaluated in Lake Junín were higher than the maximum permissible limits (MPL) for the following metals: arsenic, cadmium, copper, chromium and lead. In the Yanamate tailings facility, the evaluated parameters were out of the LMP for type IV water ECAs: pH below 3 (acids), high electrical conductivities and high concentrations of heavy metals. From the sampled waters, yeasts were isolated in YPG medium at 10 ° C and 20 ° C. The LC50 of the Cr+6, Cu+2, Cd+2 and Hg+2 ions in Y. lipolytica AMJ3 were 0.24 mM, 1.34 mM, 0.54 mM y 7.5 0.04 mM in the order described; while the strain Y. lipolytica AMJ6 showed a LC50 of 1.06 mM, 1.42 mM, 0.49 mM y 0.05 mM in the same order. The biosorption capacity of the Cu+2 ion was 90% in the case of the AMJ3 strain, and 92% in the AMJ6 strain, at a concentration of 1.26 mM; likewise, the biosorption of the Cr+6 ion was close to 90% in both strains (AMJ3 and AMJ6) at concentrations of 0.24 mM and 0.96 mM, respectively. Nucleotide sequence analysis of AMJ3 and AMJ6 strains confirmed 100% identity in the Yarrowia lipolytica clade. These LC50 and biosorption capacity results indicate that the studied yeasts have potential in the bioremediation of water bodies and soils contaminated with heavy metals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peru evidences one of the main environmental problems and this refers to mining, metallurgical and industrial contamination basically by heavy metals such as copper, zinc, iron, cadmium, lead, mercury and others, these compounds can reach various bodies of water by leaching or runoff. Fish have the capacity to store in their organism a higher concentration of these compounds compared to what is present in the environment, which is why they are important indicators of contamination. The objective of this study was to determine the mean lethal concentration LC50-96h of the fish species Poecilia reticulata under the action of the heavy metal iron. The bioassays were carried out using 10 juveniles of the "guppy" under the tested concentrations of FeSO4.7H2O of: 50,00; 74,76; 111,79; 171,04 and 250 mg/L, with three replicates for each concentration, observing mortality at 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of exposure. The LC50-96h concentration for iron in juveniles was found to be 97,131 mg/L with lower and upper confidence limits of 85,765 and 109,333 mg/L. The Probit statistical program and the analysis of variance methodology were used, which are used in toxicity tests for static acute tests. These results can be useful for the elaboration of water quality criteria and standards for the protection of national aquatic systems drastically affected by mining, metallurgical and industrial contamination. Residual lignocellulosic materials can be used as adsorbents for heavy metals present in water, promoting the adsorption of metal ions on the surface and active sites of biomaterials, resulting in a low-cost and efficient removal. In this case, the residues from the agroindustrial use of the fique (Furcraea macrophilla) and the agricultural process of the corn maize (Zea mays) were studied as adsorbing phases of chromium and lead metals, in order to assess their capacity as biosorbents of these metals present in water samples, determined by equilibrium time, type of isotherm and maximum adsorption capacity; finding that in a time of 12 hours, the fique fiber has an adsorption capacity of Cr and Pb of 7,81 ± 1,40 mg/g and 169,51 ± 1,37 mg/g respectively, observing, a form of Freundlich type adsorption isotherm; while the corn layer fiber has an adsorption capacity of 13,35 ± 3,28 mg/g for chromium and 15,01 ± 3,47 mg/g for lead, showing a behavior in its Langmuir-type adsorption isotherm, concluding that both fibers have potential for the removal of the metals studied, especially the fiber of fique. The compost produced based on municipal/urban organic solid waste (RSOM/U), is a valuable resource as a biofertilizer for agriculture, gardening, forestry and especially for soil remediation, whose production contributes to sustainable development through recycling of organic matter and nutrients. However, due to the raw materials used, the compost can have a significant content of heavy metals such as: cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se), and contaminants such as potentially toxic trace elements that harm human health. These components can accumulate in plant tissues by absorption, giving rise to the possibility of being bioavailable to humans and animals. The fungal bioremediation of heavy metals in RSOM/U compost is highly efficient, cost-effective, available and friendly to the environment, therefore the removal of metals through this technique is a priority, if the purpose is to use it in agricultural soils. This review summarizes the studies based on the potential of fungal biomass for the bioremediation of heavy metals in RSOM/U compost, reporting information on RSOM/U-based compost, fungal biomass production and mechanisms of bioremediation of heavy metals by fungal biomass. In conclusion, the bioremediation of heavy metals using the fungal biomass in RSOM/U compost, with adequate segregation of raw material, coupled with bioremediation, could improve the removal of heavy metals in RSOM/U compost, and could be an ecological and viable alternative, which must be valued by intensifying its use. - Abstract
Introduction: The middle basin of the Bogotá River has been suffering from heavy metal contamination due to industrial discharges. This water source has been used to irrigate short-cycle crops, which has resulted in heavy metal contamination of productive soils. Objective: To evaluate a phytoremediation process with the plant species Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. Italica plenck) and Cilantro (Coriandrum sativum L.) in soils contaminated with heavy metals in Mosquera, Colombia. Methods: Sampling was performed with a randomized factorial design: a) cilantro/broccoli proportions (30 cilantro/70 broccoli, 50/50, 70 cilantro/30 broccoli and two monoculture type controls of each species) and b) phytoremediation time (3, 6 and 9 months), each treatment with four experimental plots. Soil and plant tissue were analyzed in the laboratory by atomic absorption spectrophotometry to determine the concentration of heavy metals. Results: The concentrations of heavy metals in plant tissue samples for broccoli and cilantro showed higher values of Cd, Pb and Cr than Hg and As, with respect to the control. The concentrations of Cd, Pb and Cr presented significantly higher values (P < 0.05) in soil where there was a mixed presence of cilantro and broccoli, with respect to the control site where the concentration of Cd registered significantly lower levels than in the other soils. Finally, Cd, Pb and Cr concentrations were higher in cilantro tissues and in soils with cilantro compared to the control. Conclusions: Phytoremediation by means of Brassica oleracea var. italica Plenck and Coriandrum sativum L. in 70/30 or 30/70 proportions in soils with pH between 5.5 and 6.0 allows a good recovery of soils with heavy metal contents in terms of high concentrations in short terms, starting bioremediation after three months and ending loads of variable availability after nine months. The genome of the fungus Talaromyces santanderensis, found in soils contaminated with cadmium on a cocoa farm in San Vicente de Chucurí, reveals its tolerance to this toxic metal. Microbiological characterization of this fungus is being carried out at EAFIT University, with the aim of understanding its genetic code and developing biotechnological solutions to improve the quality of cocoa and its international marketing. Images of the analysis processes in the laboratory are shown, including the extraction of genetic material and the amplification of molecular markers for genetic identification of the strain. The garden snail Cantareus aspersus (Müller, 1774) and the earthworm Eisenia fetida (Savigny, 1826) were reared under laboratory conditions in order to determine the appropriate criteria for their use in terrestrial ecotoxicology with the heavy metal, Pb (lead). Seven criteria established for the two bioindicators were detailed according to the management experience under laboratory conditions, which have allowed the garden snail (C. aspersus) and earthworm (E. fetida) to be properly raised. For this, the following criteria were considered: (1) preparation of the container, (2) physicochemical analysis of the soil, (3) temperature, photoperiod and relative humidity, (4) characterization, (5) cleanliness and hygiene (criterion not evaluated in earthworms). ground), (6) feeding and, finally (7) fecundity (criterion not evaluated in garden snails). The validation of the breeding criteria in the two bioindicators through exposure to Pb acetate showed various toxic effects at 14 days of exposure. In the case of the garden snail, there were deaths, color change, elimination of water and decrease in body mass. While in the earthworm deaths, cocoons and morphological changes were shown. It is suggested to continue optimizing the acclimatization and rearing conditions of both terrestrial indicators to evaluate various substances and potentially toxic elements to the soil. A system of humus, compost, humic acids and fulvic acids was implemented to filter a solution of 200 ppm of lead obtained from a sample of mining tailings from the Samne area (La Libertad Region, Peru) that contained 3399 ppm of lead. lead. Then, the concentration of Pb in the filtrate of each system was determined using the atomic absorption spectrophotometry technique. Through this analysis, it was obtained as a result that Pb was removed by the nanodendimers present in the chemical structure of the organic materials used, concluding that the highest Pb removal capacity was performed by pure humic acids with 93,35% and fulvic acids with 44,85%, while the lowest removal was represented by humus with (9.20%) and compost (6 .35%). Produced water (PW) from the Cuban oil industry is a source of oil and chemicals into the sea. This kind of wastewater is a complex mixture of organic and inorganic compounds. The high salinity, metals and sediment could pose severe environmental impacts upon inadequate disposal. This study is based on the treatment proposal of this kind of wastewater used nature zeolite (N-Z) taking into account the deposits of this material across the island. Results suggest that, significant changes between a doses in terms of the adsorption of organic compounds were not found evaluated by UV-Vis at 295nm, the behavior was for the basic pH of the solution and the textural characteristics of the N-Z such as low surface area of 35 m2/g. Differents doses of N-Z vs. CL were studied, the best to carry out the adsorption process was 0,5 g of zeolite per 50mL of clear liquid (CL)according to the evaluation of the solid phase by ICP-OES(Inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry) the higher doses increase the compounds that are part of the zeolite structure. On the other hand the evaluation of the liquid phase with the Spectrophotometer at 295nm were no observed significant changes, demonstrating the non-adsorption of organic compounds. At the best doses the selectivity of the zeolite of heavy metal was Zn2+> Fe2+> Cu2+> Mn2+ and the ion exchange occurring by Al2O3 and CaO, also was evaluated by TGA (Thermogravimetry) analysis detecting a small difference in ash content between the virgin and exhausted zeolite that confirm the adsorption of inorganic compounds. In the present research, was to determine the remediation coefficients of cadmium and lead of American Romerillo in soils contaminated. The analysis of heavy metals in two soils, the brown soil with carbonate and the dark plastic gleyseous, and in the different organs of the plant, was carried out by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The experiments were conducted at the laboratory level using experimental phytoremediation systems, with more controlled conditions and at the contaminated site, where only the brown soil was analyzed. The biological phytoremediation coefficients obtained, both for the experimental systems and in the in-situ experiments, were greater than one, except for the root biological uptake coefficient for lead. This result is in correspondence with the higher lead concentrations obtained in the leaves with respect to the root, showing the plant's capacity to assimilate this metal. The remediation coefficients obtained show that the American Romerillo has the capacity to bioaccumulate cadmium and lead in both soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. Hg was quantified in the dorsal muscle of the 11 species of fish most consumed in San Marcos, located in the region of La Mojana. Materials and methods. Dorsal muscle samples were taken from the fish species, T-Hg concentrations were quantified using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry (CVAAS). Results. The species with the highest T-Hg values were those with carnivorous eating habits: Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum (0.44±0.09 µg/g), Plagioscion surinamensis (0.42±0.14 µg/g) and Hoplias malabaricus (0.39±0.11 µg/g). However, the maximum recommended amount of Hg in fish (0.5 µg/g) set by the European Union, was not exceeded by any of the species studied. Conclusions. It is concluded that the commercial ichthyofauna of La Mojana is contaminated by Hg, a result of the mining activities that take place in the channels of the rivers that discharge in this region. The persistent consumption of fish from the evaluated areas by its inhabitants represents a high risk, due to the high toxicity of Hg, which presents adverse effects on human health even when it is consumed in low doses for prolonged periods of time. In this article, I make some reflections about body images and performative practices of Heavy Metal bands, whom inspiration is based on prehispanic cultures of Mexico. That kind of images are used to promote themselves on the national and international metal scene. Through an ethnographical analysis with some mexican metalheads, I reflect on the images and discourses of the prehispanic world and how they had mediated through information technologies. This research aims to analyze the distribution of heavy metals (Pb, Cd and Cu) in water, sediments and fish from the Carrizal River, Manabí - Ecuador. 21 monitoring stations for water and sediment were carried out. In addition, liver, gill, and muscle tissue samples of Hoplias microlepis, Aequidens rivulatus, and Oreochromis niloticus were extracted; heavy metal content is determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The Pb in water and sediments was 0,41 mg/L and 0,03 mg/kg, respectively. In gills of Hoplias microlepis (0,181 mg/kg) and in muscles of Aequidens rivulatus (0,149 mg/kg), the highest levels of Pb were found. The fish species presented undetectable levels of Cd or Cu. The level of Pb in surface water exceeds the established limit; evidencing a distribution and possible biomagnification of this metal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mercury is one of the metals used in mining, and when it is disposed of in the soil or water, its distribution and toxic exposure are magnified. The use of microorganisms to remove metals in water provides some opportunities to explore their impact. The objective of this research is to explore the ability to tolerate mercury, of isolates of Pseudomonas spp. gender, recovered from sewage. Water from the Ciénega de Ayapel (Córdoba) and the Cauca River, in Caucasia (Antioquia), were taken and analyzed microbiologically: spread on the Cetrimide agar and biochemical identification by Vitek (bioMérieux). The Pseudomonas spp. isolates were exposed to mercuric sulfate concentrations supplementing BHI medium, using the tube technique (up to 500 mg/L) and microplate (up to 75 mg/L), to identify the tolerance to the metal. As a result, we obtained six Pseudomonas spp. isolates with the capacity to grow in concentrations between 75 and 400 mg/L of mercuric sulfate, showing viability, precipitation, pigmentation, and fluorescence in the medium as protection mechanisms against the metal. Pseudomonas species have been mentioned in several experiments related to the removal of mercury and derived compounds. In conclusion, it was determined that native isolates of Pseudomonas with the ability to tolerate different concentrations of mercury could be used in processes that accompany the removal of this metal, going deeper into the interaction mechanism with the metal so that it is applied in future leachates obtained from mining before being disposed of in the river. The mixture of oligogalacturonides (Ogal) allows the formation of bonds with heavy metals and modifies the distribution of Cu, Cd and Fe metal cations in the soil, as well as attenuating the toxic effects on tomato seedlings, due to its high proportion of ionizable acid functional groups. Oligogalacturonides are constituted by a linear chain of galacturonic acid molecules linked by a-1-4 bonds. They are considered to be plant biostimulants. In the present work, the effect of an Ogal mixture on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants was determined, which confirmed that they can be used to grow this and probably other species in soils with elevated levels of these metal cations. The application of the Ogal mixture in different forms and combinations modified the bioavailability of these cations in a contaminated soil, favoring the phytoextraction process by tomato plants. Additionally, biomass production was stimulated without the plants showing visual symptoms of phytotoxicity. The results of this work offer an alternative for the use of the Ogal mixture in other hyperaccumulator crops to phytoremediate soils contaminated with heavy metal cations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
